The present paper investigates the binary system of quasars in the framework of the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem. The parametric evolution of libration points, the geometry of zero-velocity curves are one of the crucial aspects of our study. The multivariate form of NR method is applied to study the basin of attraction connected with libration points. The algorithm for using the Newton-Raphson method is slightly modified in order to avoid the unnecessary delay in the convergence of initial conditions. The impact of parameters on the shape of the basin of attraction and the number of iterations needed for the convergence of initial conditions are explored. We carry out an exhaustive (numerical) study to show the influence of these parameters on converging regions in basins of convergence. We unveil the existence of fractal structure in the basin of attraction using the method of basin entropy. In almost all cases, the existence of fractal structure is found throughout the basins of attraction.
We generalize the concept of basin of attraction of a stable state in order to facilitate the analysis of dynamical systems with noise and to assess stability properties of metastable states and long transients. To this end we examine the notions of mean sojourn times and absorption probabilities for Markov chains and study their relation to the basins of attraction. Our approach is applicable to a large variety of problems since in most cases the transfer operator associated to a dynamical system can be approximated by a Markov chain.
The present work deals with the recently introduced restricted six body-problem with square configuration. It is determined that the total number of libration points are twelve and twenty for the mass parameter $0< μ< 0.25$. The multivariate form of Newton-Raphson scheme is used to discuss the basin of attraction. Different aspects of the basin of attraction are investigated and explained in detail. The complex combination of the different basins is found along the boundaries. The concept of basin entropy is used to unveil the nature of the boundaries. For $μ= 0.22$ and $0.23$, the basin of at…
A basin of attraction represents the set of initial conditions leading to a specific asymptotic state of a given dynamical system. Here, we provide a classification of the most common basins found in nonlinear dynamics with the help of the basin entropy. We have also found interesting connections between the basin entropy and other measures used to characterize the unpredictability associated to the basins of attraction, such as the uncertainty exponent, the lacunarity or other different parameters related to the Wada property.
Two-dimensional maps can model interactions between populations. Despite their simplicity, these dynamical systems can show some complex situations, as multistability or fractal boundaries between basins that lead to remarkable pictures. Some of them are shown and explained here for three different 2D discrete models.
We present a fully automated method that identifies attractors and their basins of attraction without approximations of the dynamics. The method works by defining a finite state machine on top of the system flow. The input to the method is a dynamical system evolution rule and a grid that partitions the state space. No prior knowledge of the number, location, or nature of the attractors is required. The method works for arbitrarily-high-dimensional dynamical systems, both discrete and continuous. It also works for stroboscopic maps, Poincaré maps, and projections of high-dimensional dynamics t…
Using a system of two FitzHugh-Nagumo units, we demonstrate the occurrence of riddled basins of attraction in delay-coupled systems as the coupling between the units is increased. We characterize the riddled basin using the uncertainty exponent which is a measure of the dimensions of the basin boundary. Additionally, we show that the phase space can be partitioned into pure and mixed regions, where initial conditions in the pure regions certainly avoid the generation of extreme events while initial conditions in the mixed region may or may not exhibit such events. This implies, that any tiny p…
The basins of convergence, associated with the roots (attractors) of a complex equation, are revealed in the Hill problem with oblateness and radiation, using a large variety of numerical methods. Three cases are investigated, regarding the values of the oblateness and radiation. In all cases, a systematic and thorough scan of the complex plane is performed in order to determine the basins of attraction of the several iterative schemes. The correlations between the attracting domains and the corresponding required number of iterations are also illustrated and discussed. Our numerical analysis …
Fluctuational transitions between two co-existing chaotic attractors, separated by a fractal basin boundary, are studied in a discrete dynamical system. It is shown that the mechanism for such transitions is determined by a hierarchy of homoclinic points. The most probable escape path from the chaotic attractor to the fractal boundary is found using both statistical analyses of fluctuational trajectories and the Hamiltonian theory of fluctuations.
A discussion about dependences of the (fractal) basin boundary dimension with the definition of the basins and the size of the exits is presented for systems with one or more exits. In particular, it is shown that the dimension is largely independent of the choice of the basins, and decreases with the size of the exits. Considering the limit of small exits, a strong relation between fractals in exit systems and chaos in closed systems is found. The discussion is illustrated by simple examples of one-dimensional maps.
In dynamical systems, basins of attraction connect a given set of initial conditions in phase space to their asymptotic states. The basin entropy and related tools quantify the unpredictability in the final state of a system when there is an initial perturbation or uncertainty in the initial state. Based on the basin entropy, the $\ln 2$ criterion allows for efficient testing of fractal basin boundaries at a fixed resolution. Here, we extend this criterion into a new test with improved sensitivity that we call the \textit{$S_{bb}$ fractality test}. Using the same single scale information, the …
Basins generated by a noninvertible mapping formed by two symmetrically coupled logistic maps are studied when the only parameter λof the system is modified. Complex patterns on the plane are visualised as a consequence of basins' bifurcations. According to the already established nomenclature in the literature, we present the relevant phenomenology organised in different scenarios: fractal islands disaggregation, finite disaggregation, infinitely disconnected basin, infinitely many converging sequences of lakes, countable self-similar disaggregation and sharp fractal boundary. By use of criti…
The planar circular restricted three-body problem with modified Newtonian gravity is used in order to determine the Newton-Raphson basins of attraction associated with the equilibrium points. The evolution of the position of the five Lagrange points is monitored when the value of the power $p$ of the gravitational potential of the second primary varies in predefined intervals. The regions on the configuration $(x,y)$ plane occupied by the basins of attraction are revealed using the multivariate version of the Newton-Raphson iterative scheme. The correlations between the basins of convergence o…
Chaotic dynamical systems with two or more attractors lying on invariant subspaces may, provided certain mathematical conditions are fulfilled, exhibit intermingled basins of attraction: Each basin is riddled with holes belonging to basins of the other attractors. In order to investigate the occurrence of such phenomenon in dynamical systems of ecological interest (two-species competition with extinction) we have characterized quantitatively the intermingled basins using periodic-orbit theory and scaling laws. The latter results agree with a theoretical prediction from a stochastic model, and …
Spontaneous explosive emergent behavior takes place in heterogeneous networks when the frequencies of the nodes are positively correlated to the node degree. A central feature of such explosive transitions is a hysteretic behavior at the transition to synchronization. We unravel the underlying mechanisms and show that the dynamical origin of the hysteresis is a change of basin of attraction of the synchronization state. Our findings hold for heterogeneous networks with star graph motifs such as scale free networks, and hence reveal how microscopic network parameters such as node degree and fre…
The circular Sitnikov problem, where the two primary bodies are prolate or oblate spheroids, is numerically investigated. In particular, the basins of convergence on the complex plane are revealed by using a large collection of numerical methods of several order. We consider four cases, regarding the value of the oblateness coefficient which determines the nature of the roots (attractors) of the system. For all cases we use the iterative schemes for performing a thorough and systematic classification of the nodes on the complex plane. The distribution of the iterations as well as the probabili…
This article aims to investigate the points of equilibrium and the associated convergence basins in a seventh-order generalized Hénon-Heiles potential. Using the well-known Newton-Raphson iterator we numerically locate the position of the points of equilibrium, while we also obtain their linear stability. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the two variable parameters, entering the generalized Hénon-Heiles potential, affect the convergence dynamics of the system as well as the fractal degree of the basin diagrams. The fractal degree is derived by computing the (boundary) basin entropy as well as t…
The Copenhagen problem where the primaries of equal masses are magnetic dipoles is used in order to determine the Newton-Raphson basins of attraction associated with the equilibrium points. The parametric variation of the position as well as of the stability of the Lagrange points are monitored when the value of the ratio $λ$ of the magnetic moments varies in predefined intervals. The regions on the configuration $(x,y)$ plane occupied by the basins of convergence are revealed using the multivariate version of the Newton-Raphson iterative scheme. The correlations between the basins of attracti…
We numerically explore the Newton-Raphson basins of convergence, related to the libration points (which act as attractors), in the planar circular restricted five-body problem (CR5BP). The evolution of the position and the linear stability of the equilibrium points is determined, as a function of the value of the mass parameter. The attracting regions, on several types of two dimensional planes, are revealed by using the multivariate version of the classical Newton-Raphson iterative method. We perform a systematic investigation in an attempt to understand how the mass parameter affects the geo…
On Nonlinear Dynamics Of A Nonideal Magnetic System With Shape Memory Alloy To Energy Harvesting Using Uncertainty Exponent And Entropy Of Basin Of Attractions Approaches
In this paper, a two parameters family $F_{β_1,β_2}$ of maps of the plane living two different subspaces invariant is studied. We observe that, our model exhibits two chaotic attractors $A_i$, $i=0,1$, lying in these invariant subspaces and identify the parameters at which $A_i$ has a locally riddled basin of attraction or becomes a chaotic saddle. Then, the occurrence of riddled basin in the global sense is investigated in an open region of $β_1β_2$-plane. We semi-conjugate our system to a random walk model and define a fractal boundary which separates the basins of attraction of the two chao…
This report unravels frustration as a source of transient chaotic dynamics even in a simple array of coupled limit cycle oscillators. The transient chaotic dynamics along with the multistable nature of frustrated systems facilitates the existence of complex basin structures such as fractal and riddled basins. In particular, we report the emergence of transient chaotic dynamics around the chaotic itinerancy region, where the basin of attraction near the chaotic region is riddled and it becomes fractal basin when we move away from this region. Normally the complex basin structures are observed o…
An intriguing and unexpected result for students learning numerical analysis is that Newton's method, applied to the simple polynomial z^3 - 1 = 0 in the complex plane, leads to intricately interwoven basins of attraction of the roots. As an example of an interesting open question that may help to stimulate student interest in numerical analysis, we investigate the question of whether a damping method, which is designed to increase the likelihood of convergence for Newton's method, modifies the fractal structure of the basin boundaries. The overlap of the frontiers of numerical analysis and no…
Stability assessment methods for dynamical systems have recently been complemented by basin stability and derived measures, i.e. probabilistic statements whether systems remain in a basin of attraction given a distribution of perturbations. This requires numerical estimation via Monte-Carlo sampling and integration of differential equations. Here, we analyze the applicability of basin stability to systems with basin geometries challenging for this numerical method, having fractal basin boundaries and riddled or intermingled basins of attraction. We find that numerical basin stability estimatio…
Kerr oscillators are model systems which have practical applications in nonlinear optics. Optical Kerr effect i.e. interaction of optical waves with nonlinear medium with polarizability $χ^{(3)}$ is the basic phenomenon needed to explain for example the process of light transmission in fibers and optical couplers. In this paper we analyze the two Kerr oscillators coupler and we show that there is a possibility to control the dynamics of this system, especially by switching its dynamics from periodic to chaotic motion and vice versa. Moreover the switching between two different stable periodic …
We investigate the dynamics in the close vicinity of and within the critical area in a 2D effective galactic potential with a bar of Zotos. We have calculated Poincaré surfaces of section and the basins of escape. In both the Poincaré surfaces of section and the basins of escape we find numerical evidence for the existence of a separatrix which hinders orbits from escaping out of the bar region. We present numerical evidence for the similarity between spiral arms of barred spiral galaxies and tidal tails of star clusters.
In Physics, we have laws that determine the time evolution of a given physical system, depending on its parameters and its initial conditions. When we have multi-stable systems, many attractors coexist so that their basins of attraction might possess fractal or even Wada boundaries in such a way that the prediction becomes more complicated depending on the initial conditions. Chaotic systems typically present fractal basins in phase space. A small uncertainty in the initial conditions gives rise to a certain unpredictability of the final state behavior. The new notion of basin entropy provides…
The Newton-Raphson basins of convergence, corresponding to the coplanar libration points (which act as attractors), are unveiled in the Copenhagen problem, where instead of the Newtonian potential and forces, a quasi-homogeneous potential created by two primaries is considered. The multivariate version of the Newton-Raphson iterative scheme is used to reveal the attracting domain associated with the libration points on various type of two-dimensional configuration planes. The correlations between the basins of convergence and the corresponding required number of iterations are also presented a…
In the framework of photogravitational version of the restricted five-body problem, the existence and stability of the in-plane equilibrium points, the possible regions for motion are explored and analysed numerically, under the combined effect of small perturbations in the Coriolis and centrifugal forces. Moreover, the multivariate version of the Newton-Raphson iterative scheme is applied in an attempt to unveil the topology of the basins of convergence linked with the libration points as function of radiation parameters, and the parameters corresponding to Coriolis and centrifugal forces.
The escape dynamics in a two-dimensional multiwell potential is explored. A thorough numerical investigation is conducted in several types of two-dimensional planes and also in a three-dimensional subspace of the entire four-dimensional phase space in order to distinguish between non-escaping (ordered and chaotic) and escaping orbits. The determination of the location of the basins of escape towards the different escape channels and their correlations with the corresponding escape time of the orbits is undoubtedly an issue of paramount importance. It was found that in all examined cases region…
For systems with hidden attractors and unstable equilibria, the property that hidden attractors are not connected with unstable equilibria is now accepted as one of their main characteristics. To the best of our knowledge this property has not been explored using realtime interactive three-dimensions graphics. Aided by advanced computer graphic analysis, in this paper, we explore this characteristic of a particular nonlinear system with very rich and unusual dynamics, the Rabinovich-Fabrikant system. It is shown that there exists a neighborhood of one of the unstable equilibria within which th…
First conceived as a topological construction, Wada basins abound in dynamical systems. Basins of attraction showing the Wada property possess the particular feature that any small perturbation of an initial condition lying on the boundary can lead the system to any of its possible outcomes. The saddle-straddle method, described here, is a new method to identify the Wada property in a dynamical system based on the computation of its chaotic saddle in the fractalized phase space. It consists of finding the chaotic saddle embedded in the boundary between the basin of one attractor and the remain…
We analyze situations where a saddle-node bifurcation occurs on a fractal basin boundary. Specifically, we are interested in what happens when a system parameter is slowly swept in time through the bifurcation. Such situations are known to be indeterminate in the sense that it is difficult to predict the eventual fate of an orbit that tracks the pre-bifurcation node attractor as the system parameter is swept through the bifurcation. In this paper we investigate the scaling of (1) the fractal basin boundary of the static (i.e., unswept) system near the saddle-node bifurcation, (2) the dependenc…
The analysis of the affect of angular velocity on the geometry of the basins of convergence (BoC) linked to the equilibrium points in the restricted three-body problem is illustrated when the primaries are source of radiation. The bivariate scheme of the Newton-Raphson (N-R) iterative method has been used to discuss the topology of the basins of convergence. The parametric evolution of the fractality of the convergence plane is also presented where the degree of fractality is illustrated by evaluating the basin entropy of the convergence plane.
We investigate the basin of attraction properties and its boundaries for chimera states in a circulant network of Hénon maps. Chimera states, for which coherent and incoherent domains coexist, emerge as a consequence of the coexistence of basin of attractions for each state. It is known that the coexisting basins of attraction lead to a hysteretic behaviour in the diagrams for the density of incoherent and coherent states as a function of a varying parameter. Consequently, the distribution of chimera states can remain invariant by a parameter change, as well as it can suffer subtle changes whe…
Fractal basin structure in the two-dimensional dissipative circle map is examined in detail. Numerically obtained basin appears to be riddling in the parameter region where two periodic orbits co-exist near a boundary crisis, but it is shown to consist of layers of thin bands.
The orbital dynamics of a spacecraft, or a comet, or an asteroid in the Earth-Moon system in a scattering region around the Moon using the three dimensional version of the circular restricted three-body problem is numerically investigated. The test particle can move in bounded orbits around the Moon or escape through the openings around the Lagrange points $L_1$ and $L_2$ or even collide with the surface of the Moon. We explore in detail the first four of the five possible Hill's regions configurations depending on the value of the Jacobi constant which is of course related with the total orbi…
Understanding the basins of attraction (BoA) is often a paramount consideration for nonlinear systems. Most existing approaches to determining a high-resolution BoA require prior knowledge of the system's dynamical model (e.g., differential equation or point mapping for continuous systems, cell mapping for discrete systems, etc.), which allows derivation of approximate analytical solutions or parallel computing on a multi-core computer to find the BoA efficiently. However, these methods are typically impractical when the BoA must be determined experimentally or when the system's model is unkno…

In nonlinear dynamics, basins of attraction link a given set of initial conditions to its corresponding final states. This notion appears in a broad range of applications where several outcomes are possible, which is a common situation in neuroscience, economy, astronomy, ecology and many other disciplines. Depending on the nature of the basins, prediction can be difficult even in systems that evolve under deterministic rules. From this respect, a proper classification of this unpredictability is clearly required. To address this issue, we introduce the basin entropy, a measure to quantify thi…
In the present work, the Newton-Raphson basins of convergence, corresponding to the coplanar libration points (which act as numerical attractors), are unveiled in the axisymmetric five-body problem, where convex configuration is considered. In particular, the four primaries are set in axisymmetric central configuration, where the motion is governed only by mutual gravitational attractions. It is observed that the total number libration points are either eleven, thirteen or fifteen for different combination of the angle parameters. Moreover, the stability analysis revealed that the all the libr…
Traditional studies of chaos in conservative and driven dissipative systems have established a correspondence between sensitive dependence on initial conditions and fractal basin boundaries, but much less is known about the relation between geometry and dynamics in undriven dissipative systems. These systems can exhibit a prevalent form of complex dynamics, dubbed doubly transient chaos because not only typical trajectories but also the (otherwise invariant) chaotic saddles are transient. This property, along with a manifest lack of scale invariance, has hindered the study of the geometric pro…
The Newton-Raphson basins of attraction, associated with the libration points (attractors), are revealed in the pseudo-Newtonian planar circular restricted three-body problem, where the primaries have equal masses. The parametric variation of the position as well as of the stability of the equilibrium points is determined, when the value of the transition parameter $ε$ varies in the interval $[0,1]$. The multivariate Newton-Raphson iterative scheme is used to determine the attracting domains on several types of two-dimensional planes. A systematic and thorough numerical investigation is perfor…
The escape dynamics in a simple analytical gravitational model which describes the motion of stars in a Seyfert galaxy is investigated in detail. We conduct a thorough numerical analysis distinguishing between regular and chaotic orbits as well as between trapped and escaping orbits, considering only unbounded motion for several energy levels. In order to distinguish safely and with certainty between ordered and chaotic motion, we apply the Smaller ALingment Index (SALI) method. It is of particular interest to locate the escape basins through the openings around the collinear Lagrangian points…
The Copenhagen case of the circular restricted three-body problem with oblate primary bodies is numerically investigated by exploring the Newton-Raphson basins of convergence, related to the out-of-plane equilibrium points. The evolution of the position of the libration points is determined, as a function of the value of the oblateness coefficient. The attracting regions, on several types of two-dimensional planes, are revealed by using the multivariate Newton-Raphson iterative method. We perform a systematic and thorough investigation in an attempt to understand how the oblateness coefficient…
Power grids sustain modern society by supplying electricity and thus their stability is a crucial factor for our civilization. The dynamic stability of a power grid is usually quantified by the probability of its nodes' recovery to phase synchronization of the alternating current it carries, in response to external perturbation. Intuitively, the stability of nodes in power grids is supposed to become more robust as the coupling strength between the nodes increases. However, we find a counterintuitive range of coupling strength values where the synchronization stability suddenly droops as the c…
Some invariant sets may attract a nearby set of initial conditions but nonetheless repel a complementary nearby set of initial conditions. For a given invariant set $X\subset\R^n$ with a basin of attraction $N$, we define a stability index $σ(x)$ of a point $x\in X$ that characterizes the local extent of the basin. Let $B_ε$ denote a ball of radius $ε$ about $x$. If $σ(x)>0$, then the measure of $B_ε\setminus N$ relative the measure of the ball is $O(ε^{|σ(x)|})$, while if $σ(x)<0$, then the measure of $B_ε\cap N$ relative the measure of the ball is of the same order. We show that this index i…
Strength of attractor is studied by the return rate to itself after perturbations, for a multi-attractor state of a globally coupled map. It is found that fragile (Milnor) attractors have a large basin volume at the partially ordered phase. Such dominance of fragile attractors is understood by robustness of global attraction in the phase space. Change of the attractor strength and basin volume against the parameter and size are studied. In the partially ordered phase, the dynamics is often described as Milnor attractor network, which leads to a new interpretation of chaotic itinerancy. Noise-i…
We investigate, using numerical methods, the convergence dynamics of the Sitnikov problem with non-spherical primaries, by applying the Newton-Raphson (NR) iterative scheme. In particular, we examine how the oblateness parameter $A$ influences several aspects of the method, such as its speed and efficiency. Color-coded diagrams are used for revealing the convergence basins on the plane of complex numbers. Moreover, we compute the degree of fractality of the convergence basins on the complex space, as a relation of the oblateness, by using different computational tools, such the fractal dimensi…
Dynamics near the grazing manifold and basins of attraction for a motion of a material point in a gravitational field, colliding with a moving motion-limiting stop, are investigated. The Poincare map, describing evolution from an impact to the next impact, is derived. Periodic points are found and their stability is determined. The grazing manifold is computed and dynamics is approximated in its vicinity. It is shown that on the grazing manifold there are trapping as well as forbidden regions. Finally, basins of attraction are studied.
