We analyze triply degenerate nodal points [or triple points (TPs) for short] in energy bands of crystalline solids. Specifically, we focus on spinless band structures, i.e., when spin-orbit coupling is negligible, and consider TPs formed along high-symmetry lines in the momentum space by a crossing of three bands transforming according to a 1D and a 2D irreducible corepresentation (ICR) of the little co-group. The result is a complete classification of such TPs in all magnetic space groups, including the non-symmorphic ones, according to several characteristics of the nodal-line structure at and near the TP. We show that the classification of the presently studied TPs is exhausted by 13 magnetic point groups (MPGs) that can arise as the little co-group of a high-symmetry line and which support both 1D and 2D spinless ICRs. For 10 of the identified MPGs, the TP characteristics are uniquely determined without further information; in contrast, for the 3 MPGs containing sixfold rotational symmetry, two types of TPs are possible, depending on the choice of the crossing ICRs. The classification result for each of the 13 MPGs is illustrated with first-principles calculations of a concrete material candidate.
Triple nodal points are degeneracies of energy bands in momentum space at which three Hamiltonian eigenstates coalesce at a single eigenenergy. For spinless particles, the stability of a triple nodal point requires two ingredients: rotation symmetry of order three, four or six; combined with mirror or space-time-inversion symmetry. However, despite ample studies of their classification, robust boundary signatures of triple nodal points have until now remained elusive. In this work, we first show that pairs of triple nodal points in semimetals and metals can be characterized by Stiefel-Whitney …
We study a class of topological materials which in their momentum-space band structure exhibit three-fold degeneracies known as triple points. Focusing specifically on $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric crystalline solids with negligible spin-orbit coupling, we find that such triple points can be stabilized by little groups containing a three-, four- or six-fold rotation axis, and we develop a classification of all possible triple points as type A vs. type B according to the absence vs. presence of attached nodal-line arcs. Furthermore, by employing the recently discovered non-Abelian band top…
Coexistence of topological elements in a topological metal/semimetal (TM) has gradually attracted attentions. However, the non-topological factors always mess up the Fermi surface and cover interesting topological properties. Here, we find that Ba3Si4 is a "clean" TM in which coexists nodal-chain network, intersecting nodal rings (INRs) and triple points, in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Moreover, the nodal rings in the topological phase exhibit diverse types: from type-I, type-II to type-III rings according to band dispersions. All the topological elements are generated by crossin…
Nodal lines, as one-dimensional band degeneracies in momentum space, usually feature a linear energy splitting. Here, we propose the concept of magnetic higher-order nodal lines, which are nodal lines with higher-order energy splitting and realized in magnetic systems with broken time reversal symmetry. We provide sufficient symmetry conditions for stabilizing magnetic quadratic and cubic nodal lines, based on which concrete lattice models are constructed to demonstrate their existence. Unlike its counterpart in nonmagnetic systems, the magnetic quadratic nodal line can exist as the only band …
We theoretically study the three-dimensional topological semimetals with nodal surfaces protected by crystalline symmetries. Different from the well-known nodal-point and nodal-line semimetals, in these materials, the conduction and valence bands cross on closed nodal surfaces in the Brillouin zone. We propose different classes of nodal surfaces, both in the absence and in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In the absence of SOC, a class of nodal surfaces can be protected by spacetime inversion symmetry and sublattice symmetry and characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index, while another …
In recent years, realizing new topological phase of matter has been a hot topic in the fields of physics and materials science. Topological semimetals and metals can conventionally be classified into two types: type-I and type-II according to the tilting degree of the fermion cone. Here, it is the first time to report a new topological metal phase with the critical-type nodal line between type-I and type-II nodal line. The critical-type nodal line shows a unique nontrivial band crossing which is composed of a at band and a dispersive band and leads to a new fermionic state. We propose intermet…
Nodal-line semimetals are characterized by a kind of topologically nontrivial bulk-band crossing, giving rise to almost flat surface states. Yet, a direct evidence of the surface states is still lacking. Here we study theoretically impurity effects in topological nodal-line semimetals based on the T-matrix method. It is found that for a bulk impurity, some in-gap states may be induced near the impurity site, while the visible resonant impurity state can only exist for certain strength of the impurity potentials. For a surface impurity, robust resonant impurity states exist in a wide range of i…
Topological nodal-line semimetals are characterized by the line-contact bulk band crossings and the topological surface states. Breaking certain protecting symmetry turns this system into a Dirac semimetal or Weyl semimetal that hosts zero-dimensional isolated nodal points. Recent advances in band theory predicted a topological nodal-line semimetal state possessing a new type of nodal line in AlB$_2$-type diborides. Here, we report an experimental realization of nodal-line fermions and associated surface states near the Fermi energy in ZrB$_2$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combi…
Based on first-principles calculations and an effective Hamiltonian analysis, we systematically investigate the electronic and topological properties of alkaline-earth compounds $AX_2$ ($A$=Ca, Sr, Ba; $X$=Si, Ge, Sn). Taking BaSn$_2$ as an example, we find that when spin-orbit coupling is ignored, these materials are three-dimensional topological nodal-line semimetals characterized by a snake-like nodal loop in three-dimensional momentum space. Drumhead-like surface states emerge either inside or outside the loop circle on the (001) surface depending on surface termination, while complicated …
A two-dimensional (2D) topological semimetal is characterized by the nodal points in its low-energy band structure. While the linear nodal points have been extensively studied, especially in the context of graphene, the realm beyond linear nodal points remains largely unexplored. Here, we explore the possibility of higher-order nodal points, i.e., points with higher-order energy dispersions, in 2D systems. We perform an exhaustive search over all 80 layer groups both with and without spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and reveal all possible higher-order nodal points. We show that they can be classifi…
Nodal-line semimetals with magnetic orders have been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed in only few compounds. We theoretically explore the electronic structure in bulk and boundary of such a magnetic nodal-line state by introducing magnetism in topological Dirac semimetal (TDSM). TDSMs, such as $\mathrm{Cd_3 As_2}$ and $\mathrm{Na_3 Bi}$, are characterized by a pair of spin-degenerate Dirac points protected by rotational symmetries of crystals. By introducing local magnetic moments coupled to the electron spins in the lattice model of TDSM, we show that the TDSM can turn into…
The transverse magnetoresistance of a nodal line Dirac semi-metal InBi has been studied. It is found that the magnetoresistance is not quadratic. In the region of small magnetic fields $ B\lesssim 0.1$~T, it is characterized by high curvature, in the region of medium magnetic fields it is described by the sum of linear and quadratic contributions, and in the region of large magnetic fields $ B\gtrsim 1$~T, it approaches a quadratic law with a curvature several times smaller its zero field value. A phenomenological equation is proposed that allows to describe the entire dependence of the resist…
We theoretically study the electric polarization in magnetic topological nodal semimetal thin films. In magnetically doped topological insulators, topological nodal semimetal phases emerge once the exchange coupling overcomes the band gap. Changing the magnetization direction, nodal structure is modulated and the system becomes topological nodal point or line semimetals. We find that nodal line semimetals are characterized by non-linear electric polarization, which is not observed in nodal point semimetals. The non-linear response originates from the existence of the surface states. Screening …
Topological nodal-line semimetals are characterized by one-dimensional lines of band crossing in the Brillouin zone. In contrast to nodal points, nodal lines can be in topologically nontrivial configurations. In this paper, we study the simplest topologically nontrivial forms of nodal line, namely, a single nodal line taking the shape of a knot in the Brillouin zone. We introduce a generic construction for various "nodal-knot semimetals", which yields the simplest trefoil nodal knot and other more complicated nodal knots in the Brillouin zone. The knotted-unknotted transitions by nodal-line re…
Three-dimensional (3D) topological semimetals represent a new class of topological matters. The study of this family of materials has been at the frontiers of condensed matter physics, and many breakthroughs have been made. Several topological semimetal phases, including Dirac semimetals (DSMs), Weyl semimetals (WSMs), nodal-line semimetals (NLSMs), and triple-point semimetals, have been theoretically predicted and experimentally demonstrated. The low-energy excitation around the Dirac/Weyl nodal points, nodal line, or triply degenerated nodal point can be viewed as emergent relativistic fermi…
A nodal-line semimetal is a topological gapless phase containing one-dimensional degeneracies called nodal lines. The nodal lines are deformed by a continuous change of the system such as pressure and they can even change their topology, but it is not systematically understood what kind of changes of topology of nodal lines are possible. In this paper, we classify the events of topology change of nodal lines by the Morse theory and reveal that only three types of topology changes of nodal lines, i.e., creation, reconnection, and annihilation, are possible in the spinless nodal-line semimetal p…
The discovery of topological semimetal phase in three-dimensional (3D) systems is a new breakthrough in topological material research. Dirac nodal-line semimetal is one of the three topological semimetal phases discovered so far; it is characterized by linear band crossing along a line/loop, contrasted with the linear band crossing at discrete momentum points in 3D Dirac and Weyl semimetals. The study of nodal-line semimetal is still at initial stage; only three material systems have been verified to host nodal line fermions until now, including PbTaSe2, PtSn 4and ZrSiS. In this letter, we rep…
Topological semimetals (TSMs) in which conduction and valence bands cross at zero-dimensional (0D) Dirac nodal points (DNPs) or 1D Dirac nodal lines (DNLs), in 3D momentum space, have recently drawn much attention due to their exotic electronic properties. Here we generalize the TSM state further to a higher-symmetry and higher-dimensional pseudo Dirac nodal sphere (PDNS) state, with the band crossings forming a 2D closed sphere at the Fermi level. The PDNS state is characterized with a spherical backbone consisting of multiple crossing DNLs while band degeneracy in between the DNLs is approxi…
We study the band topology and the associated linking structure of topological semimetals with nodal lines carrying $Z_{2}$ monopole charges, which can be realized in three-dimensional systems invariant under the combination of inversion $P$ and time reversal $T$ when spin-orbit coupling is negligible. In contrast to the well-known $PT$-symmetric nodal lines protected only by $π$ Berry phase in which a single nodal line can exist, the nodal lines with $Z_{2}$ monopole charges should always exist in pairs. We show that a pair of nodal lines with $Z_{2}$ monopole charges is created by a {\it dou…
Weyl semimetals and nodal line semimetals are characterized by linear band touching at zero-dimensional points and one-dimensional lines, respectively. We predict that a circularly polarized light drives nodal line semimetals into Weyl semimetals. The Floquet Weyl points thus obtained are tunable by the incident light, which enables investigations of them in a highly controllable manner. The transition from nodal line semimetals to Weyl semimetals is accompanied by the emergence of a large and tunable anomalous Hall conductivity. Our predictions are experimentally testable by transport measure…
Nodal line semimetals are characterized by symmetry-protected band crossing lines and are expected to exhibit nontrivial electronic properties. Connections of the multiple nodal lines, resulting in nodal nets, chains, or links, are envisioned to produce even more exotic quantum states. In this work, we propose a feasible approach to realize tunable nodal line connections in real materials. We show that certain space group symmetries support the coexistence of the planar symmetry enforced and accidental nodal lines, which are robust to spin-orbit coupling and can be tailored into intricate patt…
The ultrafast optical response of two nodal-line semimetals, ZrSiS and ZrSiSe, was studied in the near-infrared using transient reflectivity. The two materials exhibit similar responses, characterized by two features, well resolved in time and energy. The first transient feature decays after a few hundred femtoseconds, while the second lasts for nanoseconds. Using Drude-Lorentz fits of the materials' equilibrium reflectance, we show that the fast response is well-represented by a decrease of the Drude plasma frequency, and the second feature by an increase of the Drude scattering rate. This di…
Acoustic phonon in a crystalline solid is a well-known and ubiquitous example of elementary excitation with a triple degeneracy in the band structure. Because of the Nambu-Goldstone theorem, this triple degeneracy is always present in the phonon band structure. Here, we show that the triple degeneracy of acoustic phonons can be characterized by a topological charge $\mathfrak{q}$ that is a property of three-band systems with $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, where $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{T}$ are the inversion and the time-reversal symmetries, respectively. We therefore call triple points with nontr…
We study the electronic structure and topological properties of monolayer and ABC-stacked multilayer of graphyne-$N$, which are a family of planar carbon sheets consisting of $sp$ and $sp_2$-bonding. By using the density-functional theory and the effective continuum model, we find a striking even-odd effect in the dependence of the band structure on $N$ (the number of carbon-carbon triple bonds between neighboring benzene rings). Specifically, even-$N$ graphyne monolayer has doubly-degenerate conduction and valence bands near the Fermi energy, and in its ABC multilayer, the band inversion of t…
One of key challenges in current material research is to search for new topological materials with inverted bulk-band structure. In topological insulators, the band inversion caused by strong spin-orbit coupling leads to opening of a band gap in the entire Brillouin zone, whereas an additional crystal symmetry such as point-group and nonsymmorphic symmetries sometimes prohibits the gap opening at/on specific points or line in momentum space, giving rise to topological semimetals. Despite many theoretical predictions of topological insulators/semimetals associated with such crystal symmetries, …
We show that topological nodal points can emerge in photonic crystal possessing mirror symmetry. The mechanism of generating topological nodal points is discussed in a two-dimensional photonic square lattice, in which four topological nodal points split out naturally after the touching of two bands with different parity. The emergence of such nodal points, characterized by vortex structure in momentum space, is attributed to the unavoidable band crossing protected by mirror symmetry. The topological nodes can be unbuckled through breaking the mirror symmetry and a photonic Chern insulator can …

Topological nodal-line semimetals with exotic quantum properties are characterized by symmetry-protected line-contact bulk band crossings in the momentum space. However, in most of identified topological nodal-line compounds, these topological non-trivial nodal lines are enclosed by complicated topological trivial states at the Fermi energy ($E_F$), which would perplex their identification and hinder further applications. Utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we provide compelling evidence for the existence of Dirac nodal-line fermions in the mo…
Topological semimetals is a new class of condensed matter systems with nontrivial electronic structure topology. Their unusual observable properties may often be understood in terms of quantum anomalies. In particular, Weyl and Dirac semimetals, which have point band touching nodes, are characterized by the chiral anomaly, which leads to the Fermi arc surface states, anomalous Hall effect, negative longitudinal magnetoresistance and planar Hall effect. In this paper we explore analogous phenomena in nodal line semimetals. We demonstrate that such semimetals realize a three dimensional analog o…
Recently, Ising superconductors which possess in-plane upper critical fields much larger than the Pauli limit field are under intense experimental study. Many monolayer or few layer transition metal dichalcogenides are shown to be Ising superconductors. In this work, we show that in a wide range of experimentally accessible regimes where the in-plane magnetic field is higher than the Pauli limit field but lower than $H_{c2}$, a 2H-structure monolayer NbSe$_2$ or simiarly TaS$_2$ becomes a nodal topological superconductor. The bulk nodal points appear on the $Γ- M$ lines of the Brillouin zone w…
The effect of short-range disorder in nodal line semimetals is studied by numerically exact means. For arbitrary small disorder, a novel semimetallic phase is unveiled for which the momentum-space amplitude of the ground-state wave function is concentrated around the nodal line and follows a multifractal distribution. At a critical disorder strength, a semimetal to compressible metal transition occurs, coinciding with a multi- to single-fractality transition. The universality class of this critical point is characterized by the correlation length and dynamical exponents. At considerably higher…
We propose a mechanism for opening a full bulk energy gap and inducing vortex Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in nodal superconductors (SCs). We show that this becomes possible by coupling the nodal SC of interest to a magnetic texture crystal. The latter consists of superpositions of magnetic textures which repeat periodically in space according to suitable wave vectors that enable spin-flip scattering between all pairs of nodes of the SC, and thus open a full gap in its bulk energy spectrum. In this event, MZMs can be trapped in spin or shift vortices introduced in the magnetic texture crystal. O…
Topological nodal-line semimetals are characterized by one-dimensional Dirac nodal rings that are protected by the combined symmetry of inversion $\mathcal{P}$ and time-reversal $\mathcal{T}$. The stability of these Dirac rings is guaranteed by a quantized $\pm π$ Berry phase and their low-energy physics is described by a one-parameter family of (2+1)-dimensional quantum field theories exhibiting the parity anomaly. Here we study the Berry-phase supported topological transport of $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ invariant nodal-line semimetals. We find that small inversion breaking allows for an elect…
Triple points and nexus points are two interesting topological phases, which have been reported in some three-dimensional (3D) materials. Here, we propose that triple points, nexus points and related phases, such as topological tangle nodal lines, can be obtained by alternatively stacking two types of monolayers. Two conditions for the stacking monolayers are required: the first condition is that they have a three-fold (C3) rotation symmetry and three mirror planes along the C3 axis; the second condition is that one of the monolayers should be insulating while the other one should be metallic …
Nodal-line semimetals are topological semimetals characterized by one-dimensional band-touching loops protected by the combined symmetry of inversion $\mathcal{P}$ and time-reversal $\mathcal{T}$ in absence of spin-orbit coupling. These nodal loops can be understood as a one-parameter family of Dirac points exhibiting the parity anomaly associated to $\mathcal{P}*\mathcal{T}$ symmetry. We find that the parity anomaly also appears in the non-linear optical response of these systems in an analogous way to the linear response transport. We analyze the presence of a tilting term in the Hamiltonian…
Recently, topological quantum states of non-Hermitian systems, exhibiting rich new exotic states, have attracted great attention in condensed-matter physics. As for the demonstration, most of non-Hermitian topological phenomena previously focused on are in one- and two-dimensional systems. Here, we investigate three-dimensional non-Hermitian nodal-line semimetals in the presence of a particle gain-and-loss perturbation. It is found that this perturbation will split the original nodal ring into two exceptional rings (ERs). The topological nature of the bulk electronic structure is characterized…
Knots are intricate structures that cannot be unambiguously distinguished with any single topological invariant. Momentum space knots, in particular, have been elusive due to their requisite finely tuned long-ranged hoppings. Even if constructed, probing their intricate linkages and topological "drumhead" surface states will be challenging due to the high precision needed. In this work, we overcome these practical and technical challenges with RLC circuits, transcending existing theoretical constructions which necessarily break reciprocity, by pairing nodal knots with their mirror image partne…
Topological nodal line semimetals are characterized by the crossing of the conduction and valence bands along one or more closed loops in the Brillouin zone. Usually, these loops are either isolated or touch each other at some highly symmetric points. Here, we introduce a new kind of nodal line semimetal, that contains a pair of linked nodal loops. A concrete two-band model was constructed, which supports a pair of nodal lines with a double-helix structure, which can be further twisted into a Hopf link because of the periodicity of the Brillouin zone. The nodal lines are stabilized by the comb…
Weyl points in three spatial dimensions are characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}$-valued charge -- the Chern number -- which makes them stable against a wide range of perturbations. A set of Weyl points can mutually annihilate only if their net charge vanishes, a property we refer to as robustness. While nodal loops are usually not robust in this sense, it has recently been shown using homotopy arguments that in the centrosymmetric extension of the $\textrm{AI}$ symmetry class they nevertheless develop a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ charge analogous to the Chern number. Nodal loops carrying a non-trivial value of…
Nodal-point and Nodal-line structures in the dispersion of electron energy bands are characterized by their high degeneracy in certain corners or lines in the Brillouin zone (BZ). These nodal structures can also exist in the dispersion of itinerant electrons in magnetically ordered materials whose symmetry groups are anti-unitary groups called the magnetic space groups. In the present work, we provide a complete list of magnetic space groups which can host symmetry-protected nodal-point/line band structures for spin-1/2 fermionic particles, where the degeneracies at the nodal points/lines are …
According to a widely-held paradigm, a pair of Weyl points with opposite chirality mutually annihilate when brought together. In contrast, we show that such a process is strictly forbidden for Weyl points related by a mirror symmetry, provided that an effective two-band description exists in terms of orbitals with opposite mirror eigenvalue. Instead, such a pair of Weyl points convert into a nodal loop inside a symmetric plane upon the collision. Similar constraints are identified for systems with multiple mirrors, facilitating previously unreported nodal-line and nodal-chain semimetals that e…
We propose that a tunable generalized three-dimensional Hofstadter Hamiltonian can be realized by engineering the Raman-assisted hopping of ultracold atoms in a cubic optical lattice. The Hamiltonian describes a periodic lattice system under artificial magnetic fluxes in three dimensions. For certain hopping configurations, the bulk bands can have Weyl points and nodal loops, respectively, allowing the study of both the two nodal semimetal states within this system. Furthermore, we illustrate that with proper rational fluxes and hopping parameters, the system can exhibit the three-dimensional …
Graphene is known as a two-dimensional Dirac semimetal, in which electron states are described by the Dirac equation of relativistic quantum mechanics. Three-dimensional analogues of graphene are characterized by Dirac points or lines in momentum space, which are protected by symmetry. Here, we report a novel 3D carbon allotrope belonging to a class of topological nodal line semimetals, discovered by using an evolutionary structure search method. The new carbon phase in monoclinic $C$2$/m$ space group, termed $m$-$C_8$, consists of five-membered rings with $sp^3$ bonding interconnected by $sp^…
Twisted bilayers of nodal superconductors were recently proposed as a promising platform to host superconducting phases that spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry. Here we extend this analysis to twisted multilayers, focusing on two high-symmetry stackings with alternating ($\pm θ$) and constant ($θ$) twist angles. In analogy to alternating-twist multilayer graphene, the former can be mapped to twisted bilayers with renormalized interlayer couplings, along with a remnant gapless monolayer when the number of layers $L$ is odd. In contrast, the latter exhibits physics beyond twisted bilayer…
We study two coupled Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains system, which is shown to contain rich quantum phases associated with topological invariants protected by symmetries. In the weak coupling region, the system supports two non-trivial topological insulating phases, characterized by winding number N = +1 or -1, and two types of edge states. The boundary between the two topological phases arises from two band closing points, which exhibit topological characteristics in one-dimensional k space. By mapping Bloch states on a vector field in k space, the band degenerate points correspond to a pai…
We experimentally investigate second-harmonic transverse voltage response to ac electrical current for a magnetic nodal-line semimetal Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. For zero magnetic field, the observed response depends as a square of the longitudinal current, as it should be expected for non-linear Hall effect. The magnetic field behavior is found to be sophisticated: while the first-harmonic response shows the known anomalous Hall hysteresis in FGT, the second-harmonic Hall voltage is characterized by the pronounced high-field hysteresis and flat ($B$-independent) region with curves touching at low fields…

Weyl semimetals and nodal line semimetals are characterized by linear electronic bands touching at zero-dimensional points and one-dimensional lines, respectively. Recently, it has been predicted that nodal line semimetals can be driven into tunable Floquet-Weyl semimetals by circularly polarized light. Here, we study the occurrence of interface states between two regions of a nodal line semimetal shined by two beams of light with opposite circular polarizations. Within a minimal model, we find remarkable modifications of the energy structure by tuning the polarized light, such as the possible…
