Modern 5G wireless cellular networks use massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology. This concept entails using an antenna array at a base station to concurrently service many mobile devices that have several antennas on their side. In this field, a significant role is played by the precoding (beamforming) problem. During downlink, an important part of precoding is the power allocation problem that distributes power between transmitted symbols. In this paper, we consider the power allocation problem for a class of precodings that asymptotically work as regularized zero-forcing. Under some realistic assumptions, we simplify the spectral efficiency functional and obtain tractable expressions for it. We prove that equal power allocation provides optimum for the simplified functional with total power constraint (TPC). We propose low-complexity Intersection Methods (IM) that improve equal power allocation in the case of per-antenna power constraints (PAPC). On simulations using Quadriga, the proposed IM method in combination with widely-studied Water Filling (WF) shows a significant gain in spectral efficiency while using a similar computing time as the reference Equal Power (EP) solution.
In practical mobile communication engineering applications, surfaces of antenna array deployment regions are usually uneven. Therefore, massive multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) communication systems usually transmit wireless signals by irregular antenna arrays. To evaluate the performance of irregular antenna arrays, the matrix correlation coefficient and ergodic received gain are defined for massive MIMO communication systems with mutual coupling effects. Furthermore, the lower bound of the ergodic achievable rate, symbol error rate (SER) and average outage probability are firstly derived for …
In this work, salient characteristics of a wireless communication system deploying a great number of antennas in the base station (BS), namely Massive MIMO system, are investigated. In particular, we found a simple and meaningful relationship that corroborates a fundamental assumption in recent related works: according the number of BS antennas $N$ grows, the product of the small-scale fading channel matrix with its conjugate transpose tends to a scaled identity, with a variability measure inversely proportional to $N$. Furthermore, analysis of the Massive MIMO system downlink is carried out f…
We investigate the application of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with successive interference cancellation (SIC) in downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cellular systems, where the total number of receive antennas at user equipment (UE) ends in a cell is more than the number of transmit antennas at the base station (BS). We first dynamically group the UE receive antennas into a number of clusters equal to or more than the number of BS transmit antennas. A single beamforming vector is then shared by all the receive antennas in a cluster. We propose a linear beamformin…
In this letter, we proposed a shared-antenna full-duplex massive MIMO model for the multiuser MIMO system. This model exploits a single antenna array at the base station (BS) to transmit and receive the signals simultaneously. It has the merits of both the full-duplex system and the time-division duplex (TDD) massive MIMO system, i.e., the high spectral efficiency and the channel reciprocity. We focus on the zero-forcing (ZF) and the maximal-ratio transmission/maximal-ratio combining (MRT/MRC) linear processing methods, which are commonly used in the massive MIMO system. As the main finding, w…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications are the focus of considerable interest in recent years. While the theoretical gains of massive MIMO have been established, implementing MIMO systems with large-scale antenna arrays in practice is challenging. Among the practical challenges associated with massive MIMO systems are increased cost, power consumption, and physical size. In this work we study the implementation of massive MIMO antenna arrays using dynamic metasurface antennas (DMAs), an emerging technology which inherently handles the aforementioned challenges. Specifical…
This paper investigates the performance of a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system that uses a large transmit antenna array with antenna elements spaced densely. Under the assumption of idealized uniform linear antenna arrays without mutual coupling, precoded quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) transmission is proved to achieve the channel capacity of the massive MIMO system when the transmit antenna separation tends to zero. This asymptotic optimality is analogous to that of QPSK faster-than-Nyquist signaling.
The key obstacle to achieving the full potential of the millimeter wave (mmWave) band has been the poor propagation characteristics of wireless signals in this band. One approach to overcome this issue is to use antennas that can support higher gains while providing beam adaptability and diversity, i.e., reconfigurable antennas. In this article, we present a new architecture for mmWave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications that uses a new class of reconfigurable antennas. More specifically, the proposed lens-based antennas can support multiple radiation patterns while using a si…
In this paper we present the performance evaluation for a MIMO in vivo WBAN system, using ANSYS HFSS and the associated complete Human Body Model. We analyzed MIMO system capacity statistically and FER performance based upon an IEEE 802.11n system model, with receiver antennas placed at various angular positions around the human body. We also analyzed MIMO system capacity with receiver antennas at the front of the body at various distances from transmitter antennas. The results were compared to SISO arrangements and we demonstrate that by using 2x2 MIMO in vivo, better performance can be achie…
We propose an iterative mode-dropping algorithm that optimizes input signals to achieve the sum capacity of the MIMO-MAC with per-antenna power constraint. The algorithm successively optimizes each user's input covariance matrix by applying mode-dropping to the equivalent single-user MIMO rate maximization problem. Both analysis and simulation show fast convergence. We then use the algorithm to briefly highlight the difference in MIMO-MAC capacities under sum and per-antenna power constraints.
This paper proposes a new methodology to design optimal antennas for MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) communication systems by using spherical mode expansion. Given spatial channel properties of a MIMO channel, such as the angular profile at both sides, the optimal MIMO antennas should provide the largest channel capacity with a constraint of the limited implementation space (volume). In designing a conventional MIMO antenna, first the antenna structure (current distribution) is determined, second antenna directivity is calculated based on the current distribution, and thirdly MIMO channel capa…
We study the uplink performance of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) when users are equipped with multiple antennas. To this end, we consider a generalized channel model that accounts for line-of-sight propagation and spatially correlated multipath fading. Most importantly, we employ the Weichselberger correlation model, which has been shown to alleviate the deficiencies of the popular Kronecker model. The main contribution of this paper is a rigorous closed-form expression for the uplink spectral efficiency using maximum-ratio combining and minimum mean square error channel estima…
The K-user multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC) with no channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is considered, where each receiver is assumed to be equipped with reconfigurable antennas capable of choosing a subset of receiving modes from several preset modes. Under general antenna configurations, the sum linear degrees of freedom (LDoF) of the K-user MIMO BC with reconfigurable antennas is completely characterized, which corresponds to the maximum sum DoF achievable by linear coding strategies. The LDoF region is further characterized for a class of ant…
In the Fifth generation (5G) wireless communication systems, a majority of the traffic demands is contributed by various multimedia applications. To support the future 5G multimedia communication systems, the massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique is recognized as a key enabler due to its high spectral efficiency. The massive antennas and radio frequency (RF) chains not only improve the implementation cost of 5G wireless communication systems but also result in an intense mutual coupling effect among antennas because of the limited space for deploying antennas. To reduce the c…
The aim of this paper is to analyze the array synthesis for 5 G massive MIMO systems in the line-of-sight working condition. The main result of the numerical investigation performed is that non-uniform arrays are the natural choice in this kind of application. In particular, by using non-equispaced arrays, we show that it is possible to achieve a better average condition number of the channel matrix and a significantly higher spectral efficiency. Furthermore, we verify that increasing the array size is beneficial also for circular arrays, and we provide some useful rules-of-thumb for antenna a…
This paper considers a deterministic physical model of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with uniform linear antenna arrays. It is known that the maximum spatial degrees of freedom is achieved by spacing antenna elements at half the carrier wavelength. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impacts of spacing antennas more densely than the critical separation. The achievable rates of MIMO systems are evaluated in the large-system limit, where the lengths of transmit and receive antenna arrays tend to infinity with the antenna separations kept constant. The main res…
A Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channel model is considered. The input is a two-antenna transmitter, while the outputs are the legitimate receiver and an eavesdropper, both equipped with multiple antennas. All channels are assumed to be known. The problem of obtaining the optimal input covariance matrix that achieves secrecy capacity subject to a power constraint is addressed, and a closed-form expression for the secrecy capacity is obtained.
We derive optimal SNR-based transmit antenna selection rules at the source and relay for the nonregenerative half duplex MIMO relay channel. While antenna selection is a suboptimal form of beamforming, it has the advantage that the optimization is tractable and can be implemented with only a few bits of feedback from the destination to the source and relay. We compare the bit error rate of optimal antenna selection at both the source and relay to other proposed beamforming techniques and propose methods for performing the necessary limited feedback.
Hybrid analog-digital architectures are considered as promising candidates for implementing millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems since they enable a considerable reduction of the required number of costly radio frequency (RF) chains by moving some of the signal processing operations into the analog domain. However, the analog feed network, comprising RF dividers, combiners, phase shifters, and line connections, of hybrid MIMO architectures is not scalable due to its prohibitively high power consumption for large numbers of transmit antennas. Motivated …
The growth of interest in massive MIMO systems is accompanied with hardware cost and computational complexity. Antenna selection is an efficient approach to overcome this cost-plus-complexity issue which also enhances the secrecy performance in wiretap settings. Optimal antenna selection requires exhaustive search which is computationally infeasible for settings with large dimensions. This paper develops an iterative algorithm for antenna selection in massive multiuser MIMO wiretap settings. The algorithm takes a stepwise approach to find a suitable subset of transmit antennas. Numerical inves…
Due to the large power consumption in RF-circuitry of massive MIMO systems, practically relevant performance measures such as energy efficiency or bandwidth efficiency are neither necessarily monotonous functions of the total transmit power nor the number of active antennas. Optimal antenna selection is however computationally infeasible in these systems. In this paper, we propose an iterative algorithm to optimize the transmit power and the subset of selected antennas subject to non-monotonous performance measures in massive multiuser MIMO settings. Numerical results are given for energy effi…
Massive MIMO systems with uniform circular and cylindrical antenna arrays are studied. Favorable propagation property is rigorously shown to hold asymptotically in LOS environment for a fixed antenna spacing and under some mild conditions. The analysis is based on a novel method using a Bessel function expansion, a new bounding technique and a simplified representation of inter-user interference for array geometries obeying Kronecker structure.
In this paper, we propose algorithms for signal detection in large-scale multiuser {\em spatial modulation multiple-input multiple-output (SM-MIMO)} systems. In large-scale SM-MIMO, each user is equipped with multiple transmit antennas (e.g., 2 or 4 antennas) but only one transmit RF chain, and the base station (BS) is equipped with tens to hundreds of (e.g., 128) receive antennas. In SM-MIMO, in a given channel use, each user activates any one of its multiple transmit antennas and the index of the activated antenna conveys information bits in addition to the information bits conveyed through …
This paper investigates the performance of the point-to-point multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems in the presence of a large but finite numbers of antennas at the transmitters and/or receivers. Considering the cases with and without hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) feedback, we determine the minimum numbers of the transmit/receive antennas which are required to satisfy different outage probability constraints. Our results are obtained for different fading conditions and the effect of the power amplifiers efficiency on the performance of the MIMO-HARQ systems is analyzed. Moreov…
In this paper, considering multiple interference regions simultaneously, an optimal antenna deployment problem for distributed Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) radar is investigated. The optimal antenna deployment problem is solved by proposing an antenna deployment method based on Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO). Firstly, we construct a multi-objective optimization problem for MIMO radar antenna deployment by choosing the interference power densities of different regions as objective functions. Then, to obtain the optimal deployment result without wasting time and computati…
One way to reduce the power consumption in large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is to employ low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). In this paper, we investigate antenna selection for large-scale MIMO receivers with low-resolution ADCs, thereby providing more flexibility in resolution and number of ADCs. To incorporate quantization effects, we generalize an existing objective function for a greedy capacity-maximization antenna selection approach. The derived objective function offers an opportunity to select an antenna with the best tradeoff between the additi…
In massive MIMO wiretap settings, the base station can significantly suppress eavesdroppers by narrow beamforming toward legitimate terminals. Numerical investigations show that by this approach, secrecy is obtained at no significant cost. We call this property of massive MIMO systems `secrecy for free' and show that it not only holds when all the transmit antennas at the base station are employed, but also when only a single antenna is set active. Using linear precoding, the information leakage to the eavesdroppers can be sufficiently diminished, when the total number of available transmit an…
In this work, we study the impact of imperfect sharing of the Channel State Information (CSI) available at the transmitters on a Network MIMO setting in which a set of $M$ transmit antennas, possibly not co-located, jointly serve two multi-antenna users endowed with $N_1$ and $N_2$ antennas, respectively. We consider the case where only a subset of $k$ transmit antennas have access to perfect CSI, whereas the other $M-k$ transmit antennas have only access to finite precision CSI. The analysis of this configuration aims to answer the question of how much an extra informed antenna can help. We m…
The large spectrum available in the millimeter-Wave (mmWave) band has emerged as a promising solution for meeting the huge capacity requirements of the 5th generation (5G) wireless networks. However, to fully harness the potential of mmWave communications, obstacles such as severe path loss, channel sparsity and hardware complexity should be overcome. In this paper, we introduce a generalized reconfigurable antenna multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) architecture that takes advantage of lens-based reconfigurable antennas. The considered antennas can support multiple radiation patterns simult…
In this paper, we show that the optimal receive antenna subset selection problem for maximizing the mutual information in a point-to-point MIMO system is sub-modular. Consequently, a greedy step-wise optimization approach, where at each step an antenna that maximizes the incremental gain is added to the existing antenna subset, is guaranteed to be within a (1 - 1/e) fraction of the global optimal value. For a single antenna equipped source and destination with multiple relays, we show that the relay antenna selection problem to maximize the mutual information is modular, when complete channel …
In this paper, we introduce the novel use of linear spatial precoding based on fixed and known parameters of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels to improve the performance of space-time coded MIMO systems. We derive linear spatial precoding schemes for both coherent (channel is known at the receiver) and non-coherent (channel is un-known at the receiver) space-time coded MIMO systems. Antenna spacing and antenna placement (geometry) are considered as fixed parameters of MIMO channels, which are readily known at the transmitter. These precoding schemes exploit the antenna placement i…
In this paper, performance of a dual-hop cooperative multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) system is analyzed over Rayleigh faded channels. For the considered system model, non-regenerative MIMO scheme with transmit antenna selection strategy (TAS) is employed. In this scheme, a single transmit antenna which maximizes the total received signal power at the receiver is selected for transmission. Useful insights from average symbol error rate for various quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) schemes such as general order hexagonal QAM (HQAM), general order rectangular QAM (RQAM) and 32-cross…
We characterize the total degrees of freedom (DoF) of the full-rank MIMO X channel with arbitrary number of antennas at each node. We elucidate that the existing outer bound is tight for any antenna configuration and provide transmit and receive filter designs that attain this outer bound. The proposed achievable scheme exploits channel extensions in terms of both, symbol and asymmetric complex signaling when the communication is carried out over a constant channel case, and is also applicable to time varying channels. The proposed scheme represents a general framework for the derivation of th…
In this paper, we provide a closed-form approximation of the Full-duplex Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) system signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) distribution for the received signal at the sensor users with perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) and transmit antenna selection scheme at the transmitter. We also studied the SINR distribution of the uplink with Zero-Forcing beamforming (ZFBF) and antenna selection at the aggregator (AGG) receiver with transmit antenna selection. The downlink SINR with perfect and i…
Both antenna selection and spatial modulation allow for low-complexity MIMO transmitters when the number of RF chains is much lower than the number of transmit antennas. In this manuscript, we present a quantitative performance comparison between these two approaches by taking into account implementational restrictions, such as antenna switching. We consider a band-limitedMIMO system, for which the pulse shape is designed, such that the outband emission satisfies a desired spectral mask. The bit error rate is determined for this system, considering antenna selection and spatial modulation. The…
In this letter, we present a correlated channel model for a dual-polarization antenna to omnidirectional antennas in indoor small-cell multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In an indoor environment, we confirm that the cross-polarization discrimination (XPD) in the direction of angle-of-departure can be represented as the spatial correlation of the MIMO channel. We also evaluate a dual-polarization antenna-based MIMO channel model and a spatially correlated channel model using a three-dimensional (3D) ray-tracing simulator. Furthermore, we provide the equivalent distance between adjac…
The holographic multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communications refer to the MIMO systems built with ultra-dense antenna arrays, whose channel models and potential applications have attracted increasing attentions recently. When the spacing between adjacent array elements is larger than half wavelength, the effect of mutual coupling can generally be neglected in current antenna designs. However, in holographic MIMO communications, the influence of strong mutual coupling on antenna characteristics is inevitable, resulting in distorted radiation patterns and low radiation efficiencies. In t…
In this paper, we study the impacts of transmit antenna selection on the secrecy performance of massive MIMO systems. We consider a wiretap setting in which a fixed number of transmit antennas are selected and then confidential messages are transmitted over them to a multi-antenna legitimate receiver while being overheard by a multi-antenna eavesdropper. For this setup, we derive an accurate approximation of the instantaneous secrecy rate. Using this approximation, it is shown that in some wiretap settings under antenna selection the growth in the number of active antennas enhances the secrecy…
Approximate expressions for the spatial correlation of cylindrical and uniform rectangular arrays (URA) are derived using measured distributions of angles of departure (AOD) for both the azimuth and zenith domains. We examine massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) convergence properties of the correlated channels by considering a number of convergence metrics. The per-user matched filter (MF) signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) performance and convergence rate, to respective limiting values, of the two antenna topologies is also explored.
Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is a promising technology for 5G cellular systems. To compensate for the severe path loss in mmWave systems, large antenna arrays are generally used to achieve significant beamforming gains. However, due to the high hardware and power consumption cost associated with radio frequency (RF) chains, it is desirable to achieve the large-antenna gains, but with only limited number of RF chains for mmWave communications. To this end, we study in this paper a new lens antenna array enabled mmWave MIMO communication system. We first show that the array response of…
In this paper, delay constrained performance of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system in a dense environment with co-channel interference is investigated. We apply orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) at the transmitter, and for alleviating the high complexity and cost of the MIMO system, receive antenna selection (RAS) scheme is employed in the downlink. Here, for simple and cheap mobile handsets, one antenna is chosen at the receiver in each utilization of the channel. Under these assumptions, a maximum constant arrival rate with the delay quality-of-service (QoS…
In this paper, we propose a new multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system with movable antennas (MAs) to exploit the antenna position optimization for enhancing the capacity. Different from conventional MIMO systems with fixed-position antennas (FPAs), the proposed system can flexibly change the positions of transmit/receive MAs, such that the MIMO channel between them is reconfigured to achieve higher capacity. We aim to characterize the capacity of MA-enabled point-to-point MIMO communication systems, by jointly optimizing the positions of transmit and receive MAs as well as…
The problem of finding the optimal number of data streams to transmit in a multi-user MIMO scenario, where both the transmitters and receivers are equipped with multiple antennas is considered. Without channel state information at any transmitter, with a zero-forcing receiver each user is shown to transmit a single data stream to maximize its own outage capacity in the presence of sufficient number of users. Transmitting a single data stream is also shown to be optimal in terms of maximizing the sum of the outage capacities in the presence of sufficient number of users.
In this paper, a deterministic equivalent of ergodic sum rate and an algorithm for evaluating the capacity-achieving input covariance matrices for the uplink large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna channels are proposed. We consider a large-scale MIMO system consisting of multiple users and one base station with several distributed antenna sets. Each link between a user and an antenna set forms a two-sided spatially correlated MIMO channel with line-of-sight (LOS) components. Our derivations are based on novel techniques from large dimensional random matrix theory (RMT) under…
A method for reconstructing multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel correlation matrices from lower dimensional channel measurements is presented. Exploiting the symmetry of correlation matrix structure enables reproducing higher dimensional MIMO channel matrices from available lower order measurements. This leads to practically important applications allowing prediction of higher dimensional MIMO system capacity. In particular, we study Kronecker-type MIMO channels suitable for reconstructing full channel matrices from partial information about transmit-receive fading in spatial and pol…
In this paper, we investigate optimal downlink power allocation in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks with distributed antenna arrays (DAAs) under correlated and uncorrelated channel fading. In DAA massive MIMO, the base station (BS) consists of multiple antenna sub-arrays. Notably, the antenna sub-arrays are deployed in arbitrary locations within a DAA massive MIMO cell. Consequently, the distance-dependent large-scale propagation coefficients are different from a user to these different antenna sub-arrays, which makes power control a challenging problem. We assume that th…
We propose a greedy minimum mean squared error (MMSE)-based antenna selection algorithm for amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems. Assuming equal-power allocation across the multi-stream data, we derive a closed form expression for the mean squared error (MSE) resulted from adding each additional antenna pair. Based on this result, we iteratively select the antenna-pairs at the relay nodes to minimize the MSE. Simulation results show that our algorithm greatly outperforms the existing schemes.
Orthogonality is a much desired property for MIMO coding. It enables symbol-wise decoding, where the errors in other symbol estimates do not affect the result, thus providing an optimality that is worth pursuing. Another beneficial property is a low complexity soft decision decoder, which for orthogonal complex MIMO codes is known for two transmit (Tx) antennas i.e. for the Alamouti code. We propose novel soft decision decoders for the orthogonal complex MIMO codes on three and four Tx antennas and extend the old result of maximal ratio combining (MRC) to cover all orthogonal codes up to four …
Antenna selection is capable of handling the cost and complexity issues in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels. The sum-rate capacity of a multiuser massive MIMO uplink channel is characterized under the Nakagami fading. A mathematically tractable sum-rate capacity upper bound is derived for the considered system. Moreover, for a sufficiently large base station (BS) antenna number, a deterministic equivalent (DE) of the sum-rate bound is derived. Based on this DE, the sum-rate capacity is shown to grow double logarithmically with the number of BS antennas. The validity of th…
Antenna selection is capable of reducing the hardware complexity of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks at the cost of certain performance degradation. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a cost-effective technique that can enhance the spectrum-efficiency of wireless networks by reconfiguring the propagation environment. By employing RIS to compensate the performance loss due to antenna selection, in this paper we propose a new network architecture, i.e., RIS-assisted massive MIMO system with antenna selection, to enhance the system performance while enjo…
We propose a space-frequency (SF) block coding scheme for a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system using antennas with reconfigurable radiation patterns. In this system, each element of the antenna array at the transmitter side is assumed to be reconfigurable so that it can independently change the physical characteristics of its radiation pattern. The proposed block code is full rate and benefits from spatial, frequency, and reconfigurable radiation pattern state diversity over frequency-selective fading channels. We provide simulation r…
It is shown that the condition of Theorem 1 in [1] never holds in practice and that Theorem 2 is incorrect under the stated condition. Extra assumptions or/and modifications are needed to make the conclusions of Theorem 1 and 2 above valid, which are provided below.
Massive MIMO can greatly increase both spectral and transmit-energy efficiency. This is achieved by allowing the number of antennas and RF chains to grow very large. However, the challenges include high system complexity and hardware energy consumption. Here we investigate the possibilities to reduce the required number of RF chains, by performing antenna selection. While this approach is not a very effective strategy for theoretical independent Rayleigh fading channels, a substantial reduction in the number of RF chains can be achieved for real massive MIMO channels, without significant perfo…
Large-scale MIMO systems have been considered as one of the possible candidates for the next-generation wireless communication technique, due to their potential to provide significant higher throughput than conventional wireless systems. For such systems, Zero-Forcing (ZF) and Conjugate Beamforming (CB) precoding have been considered as two possible practical spatial multiplexing techniques, and their average achievable sum rates have been derived on the sum power constraint. However, in practice, the transmitting power at a base station is constrained under each antenna. In this case, the opt…
This book chapter reviews signal detection and parameter estimation techniques for multiuser multiple-antenna wireless systems with a very large number of antennas, known as massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. We consider both centralized antenna systems (CAS) and distributed antenna systems (DAS) architectures in which a large number of antenna elements are employed and focus on the uplink of a mobile cellular system. In particular, we focus on receive processing techniques that include signal detection and parameter estimation problems and discuss the specific needs of massive M…
The use of multiple antennas in a transmit and receive antenna array for MIMO wireless communication allows the spatial degrees of freedom in rich scattering environments to be exploited. However, for line-of-sight (LOS) MIMO channels with uniform linear arrays (ULAs) at the transmitter and receiver, the antenna separations at the transmit and receive array need to be optimized to maximize the spatial degrees of freedom and the channel capacity. In this paper, we first revisit the derivation of the optimum antenna separation at the transmit and receive ULAs in a LOS MIMO system, and provide th…
One of the key features of next generation wireless communication systems will be the use of frequencies in the range 10-100GHz (aka mmWave band) in densely populated indoor and outdoor scenarios. Due to the reduced wavelength, antenna arrays with a large number of antennas can be packed in very small volumes, making thus it possible to consider, at least in principle, communication links wherein not only the base-station, but also the user device, are equipped with very large antenna arrays. We denote this configuration as a "doubly-massive" MIMO wireless link. This paper introduces the conce…
We analyze the performance of massive MIMO systems with $N$-antenna users. The benefit is that $N$ streams can be multiplexed per user, at the price of increasing the channel estimation overhead linearly with $N$. Uplink and downlink spectral efficiency (SE) expressions are derived for any $N$, and these are achievable using estimated channels and per-user-basis MMSE-SIC detectors. Large-system approximations of the SEs are obtained. This analysis shows that MMSE-SIC has similar asymptotic SE as linear MMSE detectors, indicating that the SE increase from having multi-antenna users can be harve…
