We investigate the dynamics of a phase-separating binary fluid, containing colloidal dumbbells anchored to the fluid-fluid interface. Extensive Lattice Boltzmann-Immersed Boundary method simulations reveal that the presence of soft dumbbells can significantly affect the curvature dynamics of the interface between phase-separating fluids, even though the coarsening dynamics is left nearly unchanged. In addition, our results show that the curvature dynamics exhibits distinct non-local effects, which might be exploited for the design of new soft mesoscale materials. We point out that the inspection of the statistical dynamics of the curvature can disclose new insights into local inhomogeneities of the binary fluid configuration, as a function of the volume fraction and aspect ratio of the dumbbells.
We study fluid-fluid phase separation in a colloid-polymer mixture adsorbed in a colloidal porous matrix close to the θ-point. For this purpose we consider the Asakura-Oosawa model in the presence of a quenched matrix of colloidal hard spheres. We study the dependence of the demixing curve on the parameters that characterize the quenched matrix, fixing the polymer-to-colloid size ratio to 0.8. We find that, to a large extent, demixing curves depend only on a single parameter f, which represents the volume fraction which is unavailable to the colloids. We perform Monte Carlo simulations for vol…
Fluctuations in fluid velocity and fluctuations in electric fields may both give rise to forces acting on small particles in colloidal suspensions. Such forces in part determine the thermodynamic stability of the colloid. At the classical statistical thermodynamic level, the fluid velocity and electric field contributions to the forces are comparable in magnitude. When quantum fluctuation effects are taken into account, the electric fluctuation induced van der Waals forces dominate those induced by purely fluid mechanical motions. The physical principles are applied in detail for the case of c…
We derive effective interaction potentials between hard, spherical colloidal particles and star-branched polyelectrolytes of various functionalities and smaller size than the colloids. The effective interactions are based on a Derjaguin-like approximation, which is based on previously derived potentials acting between polyelectrolyte stars and planar walls. On the basis of these interactions we subsequently calculate the demixing binodals of the binary colloid--polyelectrolyte star mixture, employing standard tools from liquid-state theory. We find that the mixture is indeed unstable at modera…
Previously, we have proposed a direct simulation scheme for colloidal dispersions in a Newtonian solvent [Phys.Rev.E 71,036707 (2005)]. An improved formulation called the ``Smoothed Profile (SP) method'' is presented here in which simultaneous time-marching is used for the host fluid and colloids. The SP method is a direct numerical simulation of particulate flows and provides a coupling scheme between the continuum fluid dynamics and rigid-body dynamics through utilization of a smoothed profile for the colloidal particles. Moreover, the improved formulation includes an extension to incorporat…
A new description of the binary fluid problem via the lattice Boltzmann method is presented which highlights the use of the moments in constructing two equilibrium distribution functions. This offers a number of benefits, including better isotropy, and a more natural route to the inclusion of multiple relaxation times for the binary fluid problem. In addition, the implementation of solid colloidal particles suspended in the binary mixture is addressed, which extends the solid-fluid boundary conditions for mass and momentum to include a single conserved compositional order parameter. A number o…
Hypothesis: The collective dynamics and self-assembly of colloids floating at a fluid/fluid interface is a balance between deterministic lateral interaction forces, viscous resistance to colloid motion along the surface and thermal (Brownian) fluctuations. As the colloid size decreases, thermal forces become important and can affect the self assembly into ordered patterns and crystal structures that are the starting point for various materials applications. Numerics: Langevin dynamic simulations involving two particles straddling a liquid/liquid interface with a high viscosity contrast are pre…
An extension of the Asakura-Oosawa-Vrij model of hard sphere colloids and non-adsorbing polymers, that takes polymer non-ideality into account through a repulsive stepfunction pair potential between polymers, is studied with grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations and density functional theory. Simulation results validate previous theoretical findings for the shift of the bulk fluid demixing binodal upon increasing strength of polymer-polymer repulsion, promoting the tendency to mix. For increasing strength of the polymer-polymer repulsion, simulation and theory consistently predict the interf…
We simulate an experiment in which a colloidal probe is pulled through an active nematic fluid. We find that the drag on the particle is non-Stokesian (not proportional to its radius). Strikingly, a large enough particle in contractile fluid (such as an actomyosin gel) can show negative viscous drag in steady state: the particle moves in the opposite direction to the externally applied force. We explain this, and the qualitative trends seen in our simulations, in terms of the disruption of orientational order around the probe particle and the resulting modifications to the active stress.
In this paper we explore the self-assembly patterns in a two dimensional colloidal system using extensive Langevin Dynamics simulations. The pair potential proposed to model the competitive interaction have a short range length scale between first neighbors and a second characteristic length scale between third neighbors. We investigate how the temperature and colloidal density will affect the assembled morphologies. The potential shows aggregate patterns similar to observed in previous works, as clusters, stripes and porous phase. Nevertheless, we observe at high densities and temperatures a …
We apply a hybrid Molecular Dynamics and mesoscopic simulation technique to study the dynamics of two dimensional colloidal discs in confined geometries. We calculate the velocity autocorrelation functions, and observe the predicted $t^{-1}$ long time hydrodynamic tail that characterizes unconfined fluids, as well as more complex oscillating behavior and negative tails for strongly confined geometries. Because the $t^{-1}$ tail of the velocity autocorrelation function is cut off for longer times in finite systems, the related diffusion coefficient does not diverge, but instead depends logarith…
We theoretically study the elastic deformation of a fluid membrane induced by an adhering spherical colloidal particle within the framework of a Helfrich energy. Based on a full optimization of the membrane shape we find a continuous binding and a discontinuous envelopment transition, the latter displaying a potentially substantial energy barrier. A small gradient approximation permits membrane shape and complex energy to be calculated analytically. While this only leads to a good representation of the complex geometry for very small degrees of wrapping, it still gives the correct phase bounda…
Janus colloids propelled by light, e.g., thermophoretic particles, offer promising prospects as artificial microswimmers. However, their swimming behavior and its dependence on fluid properties and fluid-colloid interactions remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate the behavior of a thermophoretic Janus colloid in its own temperature gradient using numerical simulations. The dissipative particle dynamics method with energy conservation is used to investigate the behavior in non-ideal and ideal-gas like fluids for different fluid-colloid interactions, boundary conditions, and temperature-…
Gels in soft-matter systems are an important nonergodic state of matter. We study a colloid-polymer mixture which is quenched by increasing the polymer concentration, from a fluid to a gel. Using confocal microscopy, we study both the static structure and dynamics in three dimensions (3D). Between the dynamically arrested gel and ergodic fluid comprised of isolated particles we find an intermediate 'cluster fluid' state, where the 'bonds' between the colloidal particles have a finite lifetime. The local dynamics are reminiscent of a fluid, while the local structure is almost identical to that …
We investigate the response of a dense monodisperse quasi-two-dimensional (q2D) colloid suspension when a particle is dragged by a constant velocity optical trap. Consistent with microrheological studies of other geometries, the perturbation induces a leading density wave and trailing wake, and we use Stokesian Dynamics (SD) simulations to parse direct colloid-colloid and hydrodynamic interactions. We go on to analyze the underlying individual particle-particle collisions in the experimental images. The displacements of particles form chains reminiscent of stress propagation in sheared granula…
We determine the capillary attraction and equilibrium configurations of particles trapped at a liquid-fluid interface due to the pinning of their contact-line. We calculate analytically the asymptotic interaction energy between two particles and, numerically, the multi-body energy landscape for up to four contacting particles. Our results are consistent with recent experiments. We show that a system composed of a large number of such particles behaves as a jammed system.
Gradients in temperature, concentration or electrostatic potential cannot exert forces on a bulk fluid; they can, however, exert forces on a fluid in a microscopic boundary layer surrounding a (nano)colloidal solute, resulting in so-called phoretic flow. Here we present a simulation study of phoretic flow around a spherical colloid held fixed in a concentration gradient. We show that the resulting flow velocity depends non-monotonically on the strength of the colloid-fluid interaction. The reason for this non-monotonic dependence is that solute particles are effectively trapped in a shell arou…
When a colloidal particle adheres to a fluid membrane, it induces elastic deformations in the membrane which oppose its own binding. The structural and energetic aspects of this balance are theoretically studied within the framework of a Helfrich Hamiltonian. Based on the full nonlinear shape equations for the membrane profile, a line of continuous binding transitions and a second line of discontinuous envelopment transitions are found, which meet at an unusual triple point. The regime of low tension is studied analytically using a small gradient expansion, while in the limit of large tension …
Using molecular dynamics simulations we study the slow dynamics of a colloidal fluid annealed within a matrix of obstacles quenched from an equilibrated colloidal fluid. We choose all particles to be of the same size and to interact as hard spheres, thus retaining all features of the porous confinement while limiting the control parameters to the packing fraction of the matrix, Φm, and that of the fluid, Φf. We conduct detailed investigations on several dynamic properties, including the tagged-particle and collective intermediate scattering functions, the mean-squared displacement, and the van…
We determine the solvent mediated contribution to the effective potentials for model colloidal or nano- particles dispersed in a binary solvent that exhibits fluid-fluid phase separation. Using a simple density functional theory we calculate the density profiles of both solvent species in the presence of the `colloids', which are treated as external potentials, and determine the solvent mediated (SM) potentials. Specifically, we calculate SM potentials between (i) two colloids, (ii) a colloid and a planar fluid-fluid interface, and (iii) a colloid and a planar wall with an adsorbed wetting fil…
Colloidal particles trapped at an interface between two fluids can form a wide range of different structures. Replacing one of the fluid with a liquid crystal increases the complexity of interactions and results in a greater range of possible structures. New behaviour emerges when colloidal particles interact with defects in the liquid crystal phases. Here we discuss the templating of colloids at a cholesteric isotropic interface.
We show theoretically that near a fluid-fluid interface a single active colloidal particle generating, e.g., chemicals or a temperature gradient experiences an effective force of hydrodynamic origin. This force is due to the fluid flow driven by Marangoni stresses induced by the activity of the particle; it decays very slowly with the distance from the interface, and can be attractive or repulsive depending on how the activity modifies the surface tension. We show that, for typical systems, this interaction can dominate the dynamics of the particle as compared to Brownian motion, dispersion fo…
A model is presented for the solution of electrokinetic phenomena of colloidal suspensions in fluid mixtures. We solve the discrete Boltzmann equation with a BGK collision operator using the lattice Boltzmann method to simulate binary fluid flows. Solvent-solvent and solvent-solute interactions are implemented using a pseudopotential model. The Nernst-Planck equation, describing the kinetics of dissolved ion species, is solved using a finite difference discretization based on the link-flux method. The colloids are resolved on the lattice and coupled to the hydrodynamics and electrokinetics thr…
Using a geometry-based fundamental measure density functional theory, we calculate bulk fluid phase diagrams of colloidal mixtures of vanishingly thin hard circular platelets and hard spheres. We find isotropic-nematic phase separation with strong broadening of the biphasic region upon increasing the pressure. In mixtures with large size ratio of platelet and sphere diameter, there is also demixing between two nematic phases with differing platelet concentrations. We formulate a fundamental-measure density functional for mixtures of colloidal platelets and freely overlapping spheres, which rep…
Colloidal particles can self-assemble into various ordered structures in fluid flows that have potential applications in biomedicine, materials synthesis and encryption. These dynamic processes are also of fundamental interest for probing the general principles of self-assembly in non-equilibrium conditions. Here, we report a simple microfluidic experiment, where charged colloidal particles self-assemble into flow-aligned 1D strings with regular particle spacing near a solid boundary. Using high-speed confocal microscopy, we systematically investigate the influence of flow rates, electrostatic…
Patchy colloidal model with three and four equivalent patches, confined in the attractive random porous media, undergo re-entrant gas-liquid phase separation with the possibility for the liquid phase density to approach zero. This unusual behavior is caused by an interplay between strong fluid-fluid bonding interactions and weak fluid-matrix attractions. At high temperature the shape of the phase diagram is determined by the attractive interaction between the fluid particles; weak Yukawa attraction between fluid and obstacles only slightly enhances the fluid-fluid bonding. At low enough temper…
We experimentally study the transient motion of a colloidal particle actively dragged by an optical trap through different viscoelastic fluids (wormlike micelles, polymer solutions, and entangled $λ$-phage DNA). We observe that, after sudden removal of the moving trap, the particle recoils due to the recovery of the deformed fluid microstructure. We find that the transient dynamics of the particle proceeds via a double exponential relaxation, whose relaxation times remain independent of the initial particle velocity whereas their amplitudes strongly depend on it. While the fastest relaxation m…
We investigate the evolution of a system of colloidal particles, trapped at a fluid interface and interacting via capillary attraction, as function of the range of the capillary interaction and temperature. We address the collapse of an initially homogeneous particle distribution and of a radially symmetric (disk--shaped) distribution of finite size, both theoretically by using a perturbative approach inspired by cosmological models and numerically by means of Brownian dynamics (BD) and dynamical density functional theory (DDFT). The results are summarized in a "dynamical phase diagram", descr…
We study the phase behavior of a system of charged colloidal particles that are electrostatically bound to an almost flat interface between two fluids. We show that, despite the fact that our experimental system consists of only $10^{3}$ - $10^{4}$ particles, the phase behavior is consistent with the theory of melting due to Kosterlitz, Thouless, Halperin, Nelson and Young (KTHNY). Using spatial and temporal correlations of the bond-orientational order parameter, we classify our samples into solid, isotropic fluid, and hexatic phases. We demonstrate that the topological defect structure we obs…
Inverse Patchy Colloids (IPCs) differ from conventional patchy particles because their patches repel (rather than attract) each other and attract (rather than repel) the part of the colloidal surface that is free of patches. These particular features occur, .e.g., in heterogeneously charged colloidal systems. Here we consider overall neutral IPCs carrying two, relatively small, polar patches. Previous studies of the same model under planar confinement have evidenced the formation of branched, disordered aggregates composed of ring-like structures. We investigate here the bulk behavior of the s…
The dynamics of active colloids is very sensitive to the presence of boundaries and interfaces which therefore can be used to control their motion. Here we analyze the dynamics of active colloids adsorbed at a fluid-fluid interface. By using a mesoscopic numerical approach which relies on an approximated numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equation, we show that when adsorbed at a fluid interface, an active colloid experiences a net torque even in the absence of a viscosity contrast between the two adjacent fluids. In particular, we study the dependence of this torque on the contact angle …
Specially synthesized silica colloidal spheres with fluorescent cores were used as model electrorheological fluids to experimentally explore structure formation and evolution under conditions of no shear. Using Confocal Scanning Laser Microscopy we measured the location of each colloid in three dimensions. We observed an equilibrium body-centered tetragonal phase and several non-equilibrium structures such as sheet-like labyrinths and isolated chains of colloids. The formation of non-equilibrium structures was studied as a function of the volume fraction, electric field strength and starting c…
The free energy landscape responsible for crystallization can be complex even for relatively simple systems like hard sphere and charged stabilized colloids. In this work, using hard-core repulsive Yukawa model, which is known to show complex phase behavior consisting of fluid, FCC and BCC phases, we studied the interplay between the free energy landscape and polymorph selection during crystallization. When the stability of the BCC phase with respect to the fluid phase is gradually increased by changing the temperature and pressure at a fixed fluid-FCC stability, the final phase formed by crys…
Colloid-polymer mixtures may undergo either fluid-fluid phase separation or gelation. This depends on the depth of the quench (polymer concentration) and polymer-colloid size ratio. We present a real-space study of dynamics in phase separating colloid-polymer mixtures with medium- to long-range attractions (polymer-colloid size ratio q_R=0.45-0.89, with the aim of understanding the mechanism of gelation as the range of the attraction is changed. In contrast to previous studies of short-range attractive systems, where gelation occurs shortly after crossing the equilibrium phase boundary, we fin…
The active motion of phoretic colloids leads them to accumulate at boundaries and interfaces. Such an excess accumulation, with respect to their passive counterparts, makes the dynamics of phoretic colloids particularly sensitive to the presence of boundaries and pave new routes to externally control their single particle as well as collective behavior. Here we review some recent theoretical results about the dynamics of phoretic colloids close to and adsorbed at fluid interfaces in particular highlighting similarities and differences with respect to solid-fluid interfaces.
We study the structure of colloidal fluids with reference to colloid-polymer mixtures. We compare the one component description of the Asakura-Oosawa (AO) idealisation of colloid-polymer mixtures with the full two-component model. We also consider the Morse potential, a variable range interaction, for which the ground state clusters are known. Mapping the state points between these systems, we find that the pair structure of the full AO model is equally well described by the Morse potential or the one component AO approach. We employ a recently developed method to identify in the bulk fluid th…
Based on Dynamical Density Functional Theory (DDFT) we investigate a binary mixture of interacting Brownian particles driven over a substrate via a one-dimensional ratchet potential. The particles are modeled as soft spheres where one component carries a classical Heisenberg spin. In the absence of a substrate field, the system undergoes a first-order fluid-fluid demixing transition driven by the spin-spin interaction. We demonstrate that the interplay between the intrinsic spinodal decomposition and time-dependent external forces leads to a novel dynamical instability where stripes against th…
We investigate the structural and thermodynamic properties of a new class of patchy colloids, referred to as inverse patchy colloids (IPCs) in their fluid phase via both theoretical methods and simulations. IPCs are nano- or micro- meter sized particles with differently charged surface regions. We extend conventional integral equation schemes to this particular class of systems: our approach is based on the so-called multi-density Ornstein-Zernike equation, supplemented by the associative Percus-Yevick approximation (APY). To validate the accuracy of our framework, we compare the obtained resu…
Hydrodynamic interactions are important for diverse fluids especially those with low Reynold's number such as microbial and particle-laden suspensions, and proteins diffusing in membranes. Unfortunately, while far-field (asymptotic) hydrodynamic interactions are fully understood in two- and three-dimensions, near-field interactions are not, and thus our understanding of motions in dense fluid suspensions is still lacking. In this contribution, we experimentally explore the hydrodynamic correlations between particles in quasi-two-dimensional colloidal fluids in the near-field. Surprisingly, the…
The influence of a fluid-fluid interface on self-phoresis of chemically active, axially symmetric, spherical colloids is analyzed. Distinct from the studies of self-phoresis for colloids trapped at fluid interfaces or in the vicinity of hard walls, here we focus on the issue of self-phoresis close to a fluid-fluid interface. In order to provide physically intuitive results highlighting the role played by the interface, the analysis is carried out for the case that the symmetry axis of the colloid is normal to the interface; moreover, thermal fluctuations are not taken into account. Similarly t…
Fluctuations of the interface between coexisting colloidal fluid phases have been measured with confocal microscopy. Due to a very low surface tension, the thermal motions of the interface are so slow, that a record can be made of the positions of the interface. The theory of the interfacial height fluctuations is developed. For a host of correlation functions, the experimental data are compared with the theoretical expressions. The agreement between theory and experiment is remarkably good.
Enskog theory is extended for the description of the self-diffusion coefficient of patchy colloidal fluid in disordered porous media. The theory includes the contact values of fluid-fluid and fluid-matrix pair distribution functions that are modified to include the dependence from the so-called probe particle porosity, $ϕ$, in order to correctly describe the effects of trapping the fluid particles by a matrix. The proposed expressions for the modified contact values of fluid-fluid and fluid-matrix pair distribution functions include three terms. Namely, a hard sphere contribution obtained by u…
We review recent work on active colloids or swimmers, such as self-propelled microorganisms, phoretic colloidal particles, and artificial micro-robotic systems, moving in fluid-like environments. These environments can be water-like and Newtonian but can frequently contain macromolecules, flexible polymers, soft cells, or hard particles, which impart complex, nonlinear rheological features to the fluid. While significant progress has been made on understanding how active colloids move and interact in Newtonian fluids, little is known on how active colloids behave in complex and non-Newtonian f…
The relaxation dynamics of a model fluid of platelike colloidal particles is investigated by means of a phenomenological dynamic density functional theory. The model fluid approximates the particles within the Zwanzig model of restricted orientations. The driving force for time-dependence is expressed completely by gradients of the local chemical potential which in turn is derived from a density functional -- hydrodynamic interactions are not taken into account. These approximations are expected to lead to qualitatively reliable results for low densities as those within the isotropic-nematic t…
Using a combination of theory and experiments we study the interface between two immiscible domains in a colloidal membrane composed of rigid rods of different lengths. Geometric considerations of rigid rod packing imply that a domain of sufficiently short rods in a background membrane of long rods is more susceptible to twist than the inverse structure, a long-rod domain in a short-rod membrane background. The tilt at the inter-domain edge forces splay, which in turn manifests as a spontaneous edge curvature whose energetics are controlled by the length asymmetry of constituent rods. A thermo…
We present a Monte Carlo method to simulate asymmetric binary mixtures in the grand canonical ensemble. The method is used to study the colloid-polymer model of Asakura and Oosawa. We determine the phase diagram of the fluid-fluid unmixing transition and the interfacial tension, both at high polymer density and close to the critical point. We also present density profiles in the two-phase region. The results are compared to predictions of a recent density functional theory.
Colloids and proteins alike can bind to lipid bilayers and move laterally in these two-dimensional fluids. Inspired by proteins that generate membrane curvature, sense the underlying membrane geometry, and migrate to high curvature sites, we explore the question: Can colloids, adhered to lipid bilayers, also sense and respond to membrane geometry? We report the curvature migration of Janus microparticles adhered to giant unilamellar vesicles elongated to present well defined curvature fields. However, unlike proteins, which migrate to minimize membrane bending energy, colloids migrate by an en…
Using Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo simulations and density functional theory we investigate the fluid-fluid demixing transition in inhomogeneous colloid-polymer mixtures confined between two parallel plates with separation distances between one and ten colloid diameters covering the complete range from quasi two-dimensional to bulk-like behavior. We use the Asakura-Oosawa-Vrij model in which colloid-colloid and colloid-polymer interactions are hard-sphere like, whilst the pair potential between polymers vanishes. Two different types of confinement induced by a pair of parallel walls are consider…
The equilibrium phase diagram of a 1:1 symmetrical mixture composed of oppositely charged colloids is calculated using Monte Carlo simulations. We model the system by the DLVO effective interaction potential. The phase diagram is similar to that of its atomic analog (the ionic fluid), where a liquid-gas first order transition emerges in the low $T-ρ$ regions being stable with respect to crystallization. As in the ionic fluids, we have found two different crystals: at high $T$ the fluid crystallizes in a FCC lattice, whereas at low $T$, the liquid coexists with a BCC crystal. The region of gas-…
A binary mixture of super-paramagnetic colloidal particles is confined between glass plates such that the large particles become fixed and provide a two-dimensional disordered matrix for the still mobile small particles, which form a fluid. By varying fluid and matrix area fractions and tuning the interactions between the super-paramagnetic particles via an external magnetic field, different regions of the state diagram are explored. The mobile particles exhibit delocalized dynamics at small matrix area fractions and localised motion at high matrix area fractions, and the localization transiti…
We report on the response of a yield stress material, namely a colloidal gel made of attractive carbon black particles, submitted to large amplitude oscillatory shear stress (LAOStress). At a constant stress amplitude well below its apparent yield stress, the gel displays fatigue and progressively turns from an elastic solid to a viscous fluid. The time-resolved analysis of the strain response, of the Fourier spectrum, and of Lissajous plots allows one to define two different timescales $τ_w<τ_f$ associated with the yielding and fluidization of the gel. Coupling rheology to ultrasonic imaging …
Computer simulations of bi-continuous two-phase fluids with intersparsed dumbbells show that, unlike rigid colloids, soft dumbbells do not lead to arrested coarsening. However, they significantly alter the curvature dynamics of the fluid-fluid interface, whose probability density distributions are shown to exhibit (i) a universal spontaneous transition from an initial broad-shape distribution towards a highly localized one and (ii) super-diffusive dynamics with long-range effects. Both features may prove useful for the design of novel families of soft porous materials.
We revisit the role of attractions in liquids and apply these concepts to colloidal suspensions. Two means are used to investigate the structure; the pair correlation function and a recently developed topological method. The latter identifies structures topologically equivalent to ground state clusters formed by isolated groups of 5 < m < 13 particles, which are specific to the system under consideration. Our topological methodology shows that, in the case of Lennard-Jones, the addition of attractions increases the system's ability to form larger (m>8) clusters, although pair-correlation funct…
The time-dependent structure, interfacial tension, and evaporation of an oversaturated colloid-rich (liquid) phase in contact with an undersaturated colloid-poor (vapor) phase of a colloidal dispersion is investigated theoretically during the early-stage relaxation, where the interface is relaxing towards a local equilibrium state while the bulk phases are still out of equilibrium. Since systems of this type exhibit a clear separation of colloidal and solvent relaxation time scales with typical times of interfacial tension measurements in between, they can be expected to be suitable for analog…
Interface localization-delocalization transitions (ILDT) occur in two-phase fluids confined in a slit with competing preferences of the walls for the two fluid phases. At low temperatures the interface between the two phases is localized at one of the walls. Upon increasing temperature it unbinds. Although intensively studied theoretically and computationally, such transitions have not yet been observed experimentally due to severe challenges in resolving fine details of the fluid structure. Here, using mean field theory and Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising model, we propose to detect thes…
We derive expressions for the leading-order far-field flows generated by externally driven and active (swimming) colloids at planar fluid-fluid interfaces. We consider colloids adjacent to the interface or adhered to the interface with a pinned contact line. The Reynolds and capillary numbers are assumed much less than unity, in line with typical micron-scale colloids involving air- or alkane-aqueous interfaces. For driven colloids, the leading-order flow is given by the point-force (and/or torque) response of this system. For active colloids, the force-dipole (stresslet) response occurs at le…
