Image fusion is a technique to integrate information from multiple source images with complementary information to improve the richness of a single image. Due to insufficient task-specific training data and corresponding ground truth, most existing end-to-end image fusion methods easily fall into overfitting or tedious parameter optimization processes. Two-stage methods avoid the need of large amount of task-specific training data by training encoder-decoder network on large natural image datasets and utilizing the extracted features for fusion, but the domain gap between natural images and different fusion tasks results in limited performance. In this study, we design a novel encoder-decoder based image fusion framework and propose a destruction-reconstruction based self-supervised training scheme to encourage the network to learn task-specific features. Specifically, we propose three destruction-reconstruction self-supervised auxiliary tasks for multi-modal image fusion, multi-exposure image fusion and multi-focus image fusion based on pixel intensity non-linear transformation, brightness transformation and noise transformation, respectively. In order to encourage different fusion tasks to promote each other and increase the generalizability of the trained network, we integrate the three self-supervised auxiliary tasks by randomly choosing one of them to destroy a natural image in model training. In addition, we design a new encoder that combines CNN and Transformer for feature extraction, so that the trained model can exploit both local and global information. Extensive experiments on multi-modal image fusion, multi-exposure image fusion and multi-focus image fusion tasks demonstrate that our proposed method achieves the state-of-the-art performance in both subjective and objective evaluations. The code will be publicly available soon.

How should we integrate representations from complementary sensors for autonomous driving? Geometry-based fusion has shown promise for perception (e.g. object detection, motion forecasting). However, in the context of end-to-end driving, we find that imitation learning based on existing sensor fusion methods underperforms in complex driving scenarios with a high density of dynamic agents. Therefore, we propose TransFuser, a mechanism to integrate image and LiDAR representations using self-attention. Our approach uses transformer modules at multiple resolutions to fuse perspective view and bird…

By leveraging and extracting the feature maps of each modality independently and using each modalities information for cross-modal interactions, we aim to provid…

In this paper, we propose TransMEF, a transformer-based multi-exposure image fusion framework that uses self-supervised multi-task learning. The framework is based on an encoder-decoder network, which can be trained on large natural image datasets and does not require ground truth fusion images. We design three self-supervised reconstruction tasks according to the characteristics of multi-exposure images and conduct these tasks simultaneously using multi-task learning; through this process, the network can learn the characteristics of multi-exposure images and extract more generalized features…
Medical image segmentation - the prerequisite of numerous clinical needs - has been significantly prospered by recent advances in convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, it exhibits general limitations on modeling explicit long-range relation, and existing cures, resorting to building deep encoders along with aggressive downsampling operations, leads to redundant deepened networks and loss of localized details. Hence, the segmentation task awaits a better solution to improve the efficiency of modeling global contexts while maintaining a strong grasp of low-level details. In this paper, …

In order to solve the robustness and generality problems of the image fusion task, inspired by the human brain cognitive mechanism, we propose a robust and general image fusion method with autonomous evolution ability, and is therefore denoted with AE-Net. Through the collaborative optimization of multiple image fusion methods to simulate the cognitive process of human brain, unsupervised learning image fusion task can be transformed into semi-supervised image fusion task or supervised image fusion task, thus promoting the evolutionary ability of network model weight. Firstly, the relationship …
Traditional and deep learning-based fusion methods generated the intermediate decision map to obtain the fusion image through a series of post-processing procedures. However, the fusion results generated by these methods are easy to lose some source image details or results in artifacts. Inspired by the image reconstruction techniques based on deep learning, we propose a multi-focus image fusion network framework without any post-processing to solve these problems in the end-to-end and supervised learning way. To sufficiently train the fusion model, we have generated a large-scale multi-focus …

Convolutional neural networks have recently been used for multi-focus image fusion. However, due to the lack of labeled data for supervised training of such networks, existing methods have resorted to adding Gaussian blur in focused images to simulate defocus and generate synthetic training data with ground-truth for supervised learning. Moreover, they classify pixels as focused or defocused and leverage the results to construct the fusion weight maps which then necessitates a series of post-processing steps. In this paper, we present unsupervised end-to-end learning for directly predicting th…

Self-supervised image denoising techniques emerged as convenient methods that allow training denoising models without requiring ground-truth noise-free data. Existing methods usually optimize loss metrics that are calculated from multiple noisy realizations of similar images, e.g., from neighboring tomographic slices. However, those approaches fail to utilize the multiple contrasts that are routinely acquired in medical imaging modalities like MRI or dual-energy CT. In this work, we propose the new self-supervised training scheme Noise2Contrast that combines information from multiple measured …

Enormous efforts have been recently made to super-resolve hyperspectral (HS) images with the aid of high spatial resolution multispectral (MS) images. Most prior works usually perform the fusion task by means of multifarious pixel-level priors. Yet the intrinsic effects of a large distribution gap between HS-MS data due to differences in the spatial and spectral resolution are less investigated. The gap might be caused by unknown sensor-specific properties or highly-mixed spectral information within one pixel (due to low spatial resolution). To this end, we propose a subpixel-level HS super-re…
Deep Learning-based 2D/3D registration enables fast, robust, and accurate X-ray to CT image fusion when large annotated paired datasets are available for training. However, the need for paired CT volume and X-ray images with ground truth registration limits the applicability in interventional scenarios. An alternative is to use simulated X-ray projections from CT volumes, thus removing the need for paired annotated datasets. Deep Neural Networks trained exclusively on simulated X-ray projections can perform significantly worse on real X-ray images due to the domain gap. We propose a self-super…

How should representations from complementary sensors be integrated for autonomous driving? Geometry-based sensor fusion has shown great promise for perception tasks such as object detection and motion forecasting. However, for the actual driving task, the global context of the 3D scene is key, e.g. a change in traffic light state can affect the behavior of a vehicle geometrically distant from that traffic light. Geometry alone may therefore be insufficient for effectively fusing representations in end-to-end driving models. In this work, we demonstrate that imitation learning policies based o…
In this paper, we presented a preliminary study for tactical driver behavior detection from untrimmed naturalistic driving recordings. While supervised learning based detection is a common approach, it suffers when labeled data is scarce. Manual annotation is both time-consuming and expensive. To emphasize this problem, we experimented on a 104-hour real-world naturalistic driving dataset with a set of predefined driving behaviors annotated. There are three challenges in the dataset. First, predefined driving behaviors are sparse in a naturalistic driving setting. Second, the distribution of d…

In this paper, we investigate the effect of different fusion strategies for ego-motion estimation and propose a new framework for self-supervised learning of de…

Due to the rise of spherical cameras, monocular 360 depth estimation becomes an important technique for many applications (e.g., autonomous systems). Thus, state-of-the-art frameworks for monocular 360 depth estimation such as bi-projection fusion in BiFuse are proposed. To train such a framework, a large number of panoramas along with the corresponding depth ground truths captured by laser sensors are required, which highly increases the cost of data collection. Moreover, since such a data collection procedure is time-consuming, the scalability of extending these methods to different scenes b…
Refining raw disparity maps from different algorithms to exploit their complementary advantages is still challenging. Uncertainty estimation and complex disparity relationships among pixels limit the accuracy and robustness of existing methods and there is no standard method for fusion of different kinds of depth data. In this paper, we introduce a new method to fuse disparity maps from different sources, while incorporating supplementary information (intensity, gradient, etc.) into a refiner network to better refine raw disparity inputs. A discriminator network classifies disparities at diffe…
Monocular depth estimation is a challenging problem on which deep neural networks have demonstrated great potential. However, depth maps predicted by existing deep models usually lack fine-grained details due to the convolution operations and the down-samplings in networks. We find that increasing input resolution is helpful to preserve more local details while the estimation at low resolution is more accurate globally. Therefore, we propose a novel depth map fusion module to combine the advantages of estimations with multi-resolution inputs. Instead of merging the low- and high-resolution est…

In recent years, graph convolutional networks (GCNs) play an increasingly critical role in skeleton-based human action recognition. However, most GCN-based methods still have two main limitations: 1) They only consider the motion information of the joints or process the joints and bones separately, which are unable to fully explore the latent functional correlation between joints and bones for action recognition. 2) Most of these works are performed in the supervised learning way, which heavily relies on massive labeled training data. To address these issues, we propose a semi-supervised skele…

Multi-modal data fusion has recently been shown promise in classification tasks in remote sensing. Optical data and radar data, two important yet intrinsically different data sources, are attracting more and more attention for potential data fusion. It is already widely known that, a machine learning based methodology often yields excellent performance. However, the methodology relies on a large training set, which is very expensive to achieve in remote sensing. The semi-supervised manifold alignment (SSMA), a multi-modal data fusion algorithm, has been designed to amplify the impact of an exi…
Recent advances in end-to-end unsupervised learning has significantly improved the performance of monocular depth prediction and alleviated the requirement of ground truth depth. Although a plethora of work has been done in enforcing various structural constraints by incorporating multiple losses utilising smoothness, left-right consistency, regularisation and matching surface normals, a few of them take into consideration multi-scale structures present in real world images. Most works utilise a VGG16 or ResNet50 model pre-trained on ImageNet weights for predicting depth. We propose a deep fea…

This paper, for the first time, seeks to expand the applicability of depth supervision to the Transformer architecture. Specifically, we develop a Depth-supervised Fusion TRansformer (DFTR…

For multimodal tasks, a good feature extraction network should extract information as much as possible and ensure that the extracted feature embedding and other modal feature embedding have an excellent mutual understanding. The latter is often more critical in feature fusion than the former. Therefore, selecting the optimal feature extraction network collocation is a very important subproblem in multimodal tasks. Most of the existing studies ignore this problem or adopt an ergodic approach. This problem is modeled as an optimization problem in this paper. A novel method is proposed to convert…
