We propose a non-perturbative $ab$ $initio$ approach to calculate the electrical conductivity of a liquid metal. Our approach is based on the Kubo formula and the theory of electron-phonon coupling (EPC), and unlike the conventional empirical approach based on the Kubo-Greenwood formula, fully takes into account the effect of coupling between electrons and moving ions. We show that the electrical conductivity at high temperature is determined by an EPC parameter $λ_{\mathrm{tr}}$, which can be inferred, non-perturbatively, from the correlation of electron scattering matrices induced by ions. The latter can be evaluated in a molecular dynamics simulation. Based on the density-functional theory and pseudopotential methods, we implement the approach in an $ab$ $initio$ manner. We apply it to liquid sodium and obtain results in good agreement with experiments. This approach is efficient and based on a rigorous theory, suitable for applying to general metallic liquid systems.
We present an ab initio calculation of the DC conductivity of amorphous silicon and hydrogenated amorphous silicon. The Kubo-Greenwood formula is used to obtain the DC conductivity, by thermal averaging over extended dynamical simulation. Its application to disordered solids is discussed. The conductivity is computed for a wide range of temperatures and doping is explored in a naive way by shifting the Fermi level. We observed the Meyer-Neldel rule for the electrical conductivity with E_MNR = 0.06 eV and a temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR ~ -2.0% K^-1 for a-Si:H. In general, experime…
In our proof-of-principle study we examine the influence of skyrmions on magnetoresistive transport. In particular, we show that magnetic tunnel junctions are a technologically appealing and promising way for electrical detection of non-collinear magnetic structures. The calculated effect is shown to originate from scattering between different k-states and cannot be identified through densities of states alone. Our results suggest that the detection efficiency strongly depends on the utilized materials.
In this paper, we show how to calculate analytical atomic forces within self-consistent density functional theory + dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) approach in the case when ultra-soft or norm-conserving pseudopotentials are used. We show how to treat the non-local projection terms arising within the pseudopotential formalism and circumvent the problem of non-orthogonality of the Kohn-Sham eigenvectors. Our approach is, in principle, independent of the DMFT solver employed, and here was tested with the Hubbard I solver. We benchmark our formalism by comparing against the forces calculat…
This work proposes a new efficient approach for calculating the bending stiffness of two-dimensional materials using simple atomistic tests on small periodic unit cells. The tests are designed such that bending deformations are dominating and membrane deformations are minimized. Atomistic ab-initio simulations then allow for the efficient computation of bending energies. Density functional theory is used for this. Atomistic bending energies are then compared to classical models from structural mechanics. Two different models are considered for this -- one based on beam theory and one based on …
We present a first-principles study of the structural, electronic, and optical properties of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). To this end, atomic configurations of a-Si:H with 72 and 576 atoms respectively are generated using molecular dynamics. Density functional theory calculations are then applied to these configurations to obtain the electronic wave functions. These are analyzed and characterized with respect to their localization and their contribution to the density of states, and are used for calculating ab-initio absorption spectra of a-Si:H. The results show that both the size…
Perovskite alkaline earth stannates, such as $BaSnO_3$ and $SrSnO_3$, showing light transparency and high electrical conductivity (when doped), have become promising candidates for novel optoelectrical devices. Such devices are mostly based on hetero-structures and understanding of their electronic structure, which usually deviates from the bulk, is mandatory for exploring a full application potential. Employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations we reveal the existence of a 2-dimensional metallic state at the $SnO_2$-terminated surface of a 1\% La-doped $BaSn…
Boron nitride (BN) is a structurally versatile insulator since it can be found in several crystalline structures with interesting mechanical and electrical properties, making this material attractive for technological applications. Seeking to improve its features, experimental and simulational studies for the amorphous phase (a-BN) have been carried out by some groups, focusing on the electrical and structural properties, pressure-induced phase transformations, and hydrogenated a-BN. In this work two amorphous structures are computationally generated and studied using ab initio Molecular Dynam…
This work is devoted to the \textit{ab initio} calculation of transport and optical properties of aluminum. The calculation is based on the quantum molecular dynamics simulation, density functional theory and the Kubo-Greenwood formula. Mainly the calculations are performed for liquid aluminum at near-normal densities for the temperatures from melting up to 20000 K. The results on dynamic electrical conductivity, static electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity are obtained and compared with available reference and experimental data and the calculations of other authors. The influence o…
We have systematically studied the mechanical stability of group V transition metal carbides TMC$_2$ (TM = Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, and Au) in the pyrite and fluorite phase, by calculating their elastic constants within the density functional theory scheme. It was found that all but ReC$_2$ and OsC$_2$ are stable in pyrite phase. On the other hand, all metal carbides studied were unstable in the fluorite phase.
We present a novel technique for calculating the dielectric response of metal/insulator heterostructures. This scheme allows, for the first time, the fully first-principles calculation of the microscopic properties of thin-film capacitors at finite bias potential. The method can be readily applied to pure insulators, where it provides an interesting alternative to conventional finite-field techniques based on the Berry-phase formalism. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by performing comprehensive numerical tests on a model Ag/MgO/Ag heterostructure.
Over the last few years, $ab~initio$ methods have become an increasingly popular tool to evaluate intrinsic carrier transport properties in 2D materials. The lack of experimental information, and the progress made in the development of DFT tools to evaluate electronic band structures, phonon dispersions, and electron-phonon scattering matrix-elements, have made them a favored choice. However, a large discrepancy is observed in the literature among the $ab~initio$ calculated carrier mobility in 2D materials. Some of the discrepancies are a result of the physical approximations made in calculati…
This work covers an ab initio calculation of thermodynamic, transport, and optical properties of plastics of the effective composition CH$_2$ at density 0.954 g/cm$^3$ in the temperature range from 5 kK up to 100 kK. The calculation is based on the quantum molecular dynamics, density functional theory and the Kubo-Greenwood formula. The temperature dependence of the static electrical conductivity $σ(T)$ has a step-like shape: $σ(T)$ grows rapidly for 5 kK <= $T$ <= 10 kK and is almost constant for 20 kK <= $T$ <= 60 kK. The additional analysis based on the investigation of the electron density…
We theoretically investigate the generation of ultrafast currents in insulators induced by strong few-cycle laser pulses. Ab initio simulations based on time-dependent density functional theory give insight into the atomic-scale properties of the induced current signifying a femtosecond-scale insulator-metal transition. We observe the transition from nonlinear polarization currents during the laser pulse at low intensities to tunnelinglike excitation into the conduction band at higher laser intensities. At high intensities, the current persists after the conclusion of the laser pulse considere…
A method for computing electron momentum densities and Compton profiles from ab initio calculations is presented. Reciprocal space is divided into optimally-shaped tetrahedra for interpolation, and the linear tetrahedron method is used to obtain the momentum density and its projections such as Compton profiles. Results are presented and evaluated against experimental data for Be, Cu, Ni, Fe3Pt, and YBa2Cu4O8, demonstrating the accuracy of our method in a wide variety of crystal structures.
A LMTO implementation of Aversa and Sipe's length-gauge formalism for calculating the full frequency dependent second-harmonic generation in the independent particle approximation is presented. It is applied to GaAs, GaP, 3C-SiC, c-BN and wurtzite and zincblende GaN and AlN. The use of the scissor's operator for correcting LDA errors is discussed and compared to an alternative approach in which the Hamiltonian is corrected. The latter is found to be superior. Decomposition in omega and 2 omega resonances and in intra- and inter-band contributions and in specific band-to-band contributions are …
We present a method for calculating ab initio interatomic forces which scales quadratically with the size of the system and provides a physically transparent representation of the force in terms of the spatial variation of the electronic charge density. The method is based on a reciprocity theorem for evaluating an effective potential acting on a charged ion in the core of each atom. We illustrate the method with calculations for diatomic molecules.
A scheme is presented that is based on the alloy analogy model and allows to account for thermal lattice vibrations as well as spin fluctuations when calculating response quantities in solids. Various models to deal with spin fluctuations are discussed concerning their impact on the resulting temperature dependent magnetic moment, longitudinal conductivity and Gilbert damping parameter. It is demonstrated that using the Monte Carlo (MC) spin configuration as an input, the alloy analogy model is capable to reproduce results of MC simulations on the average magnetic moment within all spin fluctu…
We have systematically studied the mechanical stability of all noble metal carbides with the rock-salt structure by calculating their elastic constants within the density function theory scheme. It was found that only four carbides (RuC, PdC, AgC and PtC) are mechanically stable. In particular, we have shown that RuC, PdC, and PtC have very high bulk modulus, which has been remarkably observed by the most recent experiment for the case of PtC. From the calculated density of states, we can conclude that these compounds are metallic, like the conventional group IV and group V transition metal ca…
We develop a method of the ab-initio calculation for the core-level x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). By calculating one-electron states in the presence of core-hole potential, excited states are constructed by distributing electrons on these one-electron states. The overlap integrals between the excited states and the ground state are evaluated by using the wavefunctions with and without the core-hole potential, and finally the XPS spectra are obtained. Implementing the procedure, we obtain the spin-resolved 3s-core XPS spectra in ferromagnetic iron without any adjustable parameters, in…
Studying the reason, why single-layer molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) appears to fall short of its promising potential in flexible nanoelectronics, we found that the nature of contacts plays a more important role than the semiconductor itself. In order to understand the nature of MoS$_2$/metal contacts, we performed ab initio density functional theory calculations for the geometry, bonding and electronic structure of the contact region. We found that the most common contact metal (Au) is rather inefficient for electron injection into single-layer MoS$_2$ and propose Ti as a representative examp…
The electron temperature dependent electron density of states, Fermi-Dirac distribution, and electron-phonon spectral function are computed as prerequisites before achieving effective electron-phonon coupling factor. The obtained coupling factor is implemented into a molecular dynamics (MD) and two-temperature model (TTM) coupled simulation of femtosecond laser heating. By monitoring temperature evolutions of electron and lattice subsystems, the result utilizing coupling factor from ab initio calculation, shows a faster decrease of electron temperature and increase of lattice temperature than …
A mixed quantum mechanical and Monte Carlo method for calculating Auger spectra from nanoclusters is presented. The approach, based on a cluster method, consists of two steps. Ab initio quantum mechanical calculations are first performed to obtain accurate energy and probability distributions of the generated Auger electrons. In a second step, using the calculated line shape as electron source, the Monte Carlo method is used to simulate the effect of inelastic losses on the original Auger line shape. The resulting spectrum can be directly compared to 'as-acquired' experimental spectra, thus av…
Electrical spin-current generation is among the core phenomena driving the field of spintronics. Using {\em ab initio} calculations we show that a room-temperature metallic collinear antiferromagnet RuO$_2$ allows for highly efficient spin-current generation, arising from anisotropically-split bands with conserved up and down spins along the Néel vector axis. The zero net moment antiferromagnet acts as an electrical spin-splitter with a 34$^\circ$ propagation angle between spin-up and spin-down currents. Correspondingly, the spin-conductivity is a factor of three larger than the record value f…
We present a combined treatment of the non-equilibrium dynamics and transport of electrons and phonons by carrying out \textit{ab initio} calculations of the fully coupled electron and phonon Boltzmann transport equations. We find that the presence of mutual drag between the two carriers causes the thermopower to be enhanced and dominated by the transport of phonons, rather than electrons as in the traditional semiconductor picture. Drag also strongly boosts the intrinsic electron mobility, thermal conductivity and the Lorenz number. Impurity scattering is seen to suppress the drag-enhancement…
We present quantum molecular dynamics calculations of thermophysical properties of solid and liquid zirconium in the vicinity of melting. An overview of available experimental data is also presented. We focus on the analysis of thermal expansion, molar enthalpy, resistivity and normal spectral emissivity of solid and liquid Zr. Possible reasons of discrepancies between the first-principle simulations and experiments are discussed. Our calculations reveal a significant volume change on melting in agreement with electrostatic levitation experiments. Meanwhile, we confirm a low value of enthalpy …
It is generally observed that electrical transport properties of simple liquid metal based alloys can be explained well in terms of Faber-Ziman theory, 2kF scattering model and finite mean free path approach. However, these approaches give poor description for materials, which show departure from nearly free electron (NFE) model. Taking Pb-Li as a test case of a system showing departure from NFE (which also exhibit compound formation tendency and disparate mass system), a new technique is proposed to compute electrical transport properties using model potential formalism coupled with t-matrix …
We have employed the improved Peierls-Nabarro (P-N) equation to study the properties of 1/2<110> edge dislocation in {111} plane in FCC metals Al, Cu, Ir, Pd, and Pt. The generalized-stacking-fault energy (GSFE) surface entering the equation is calculated by using first-principles density functional theory (DFT). The accuracy of the method has been tested by calculating values for various stacking fault energies which favorably compare with the previous theoretical and experimental results. The core structures, including the core widths both of the edge and screw components, dissociation behav…
The interaction between electrons and lattice vibrations determines key physical properties of materials, including their electrical and heat transport, excited electron dynamics, phase transitions, and superconductivity. We present a new ab initio method that employs atomic orbital (AO) wavefunctions to compute the electron-phonon (e-ph) interactions in materials and interpolate the e-ph coupling matrix elements to fine Brillouin zone grids. We detail the numerical implementation of such AO-based e-ph calculations, and benchmark them against direct density functional theory calculations and W…

The coupling between electrons and phonons in solids plays a central role in describing many phenomena, including superconductivity and thermoelecric transport. Calculations of this coupling are exceedingly demanding as they necessitate integrations over both the electron and phonon momenta, both of which span the Brillouin zone of the crystal, independently. We present here an ab initio method for efficiently calculating electron-phonon mediated transport properties by dramatically accelerating the computation of the double integrals with a dual interpolation technique that combines maximally…

通过联合 X 射线衍射、电阻率测量与从头计算,揭示了 (TMTTF)₂PF₆ 在压力下关联效应减弱、二聚化消失,并阐明了电荷与自旋有序的不同压力响应,为统一相图提供依据。
Ab-initio dynamical simulation is used to study the liquid Ga-Se system at the three concentrations Ga$_2$Se, GaSe and Ga$_2$Se$_3$ at the temperature 1300~K. The simulations are based on the density functional pseudopotential technique, with the system maintained on the Born-Oppenheimer surface by conjugate gradients minimization. We present results for the partial structure factors and radial distribution functions, which reveal how the liquid structure depends on the composition. Our calculations of the electrical conductivity $σ$ using the Kubo-Greenwood approximation show that $σ$ depends…
We study the thermophysical properties of dense helium plasmas by using quantum molecular dynamics and orbital-free molecular dynamics simulations, where densities are considered from 400 to 800 g/cm$^{3}$ and temperatures up to 800 eV. Results are presented for the equation of state. From the Kubo-Greenwood formula, we derive the electrical conductivity and electronic thermal conductivity. In particular, with the increase in temperature, we discuss the change in the Lorenz number, which indicates a transition from strong coupling and degenerate state to moderate coupling and partial degenerac…
We study the optical response of VO2 in the M1 insulating phase using methods based on density functional theory in its most recent developments. We start from a hybrid functional approach which may be a good starting point to carry out many-body perturbation theory since, as we show, it gives a qualitatively and to some degree quantitatively correct description of the insulating phase. In order to calculate the dielectric function, first, using hybrid density functional wavefunctions we have added GW corrections on top of the hybrid density functional calculations and we solved the so-called …
A general set of methods is presented for calculating chemical potentials in solid and liquid mixtures using {\em ab initio} techniques based on density functional theory (DFT). The methods are designed to give an {\em ab initio} approach to treating chemical equilibrium between coexisting solid and liquid solutions, and particularly the partitioning ratio of solutes between such solutions. For the liquid phase, the methods are based on the general technique of thermodynamic integration, applied to calculate the change of free energy associated with the continuous interconversion of solvent an…
Thermoelectric properties of the system La$_2$NiO$_{4+δ}$ have been studied ab initio. Large Seebeck coefficient values are predicted for the parent compound, and to some extent remain in the hole-doped metallic phase, accompanied of an increase in the conductivity. This system, due to its layered structure would be a suitable candidate for an improvement of its thermoelectric figure of merit by nanostructurization in thin films, that has already been shown to increase the electrical conductivity ($σ$). Our calculations show that in the region around La$_2$NiO$_{4.05}$ the system has a large t…

In this paper, we present ab initio computer models of Cu-doped amorphous Ta2O5 , a promising candidate for Conducting Bridge Random Access Memory (CBRAM) memory devices, and study the structural, electronic, charge transport and vibrational properties based on plane-wave density functional methods. We offer an atomistic picture of the process of phase segregation/separation between Cu and Ta2O5 subnetworks. Electronic calculations show that the models are conducting with extended Kohn-Sham orbitals around the Fermi level. In addition to that, we also characterize the electronic transport usin…
We propose a fast method for high-throughput screening of potential superconducting materials. The method is based on calculating metallic screening of zone-center phonon modes, which provides an accurate estimate for the electron-phonon coupling strength. This method is complementary to the recently proposed Rigid Muffin Tin (RMT) method, which amounts to integrating the electron-phonon coupling over the entire Brillouin zone (as opposed to the zone center), but in a relatively inferior approximation. We illustrate the use of this method by applying it to MgB$_\text{2}$, where the high-temper…
Novel imaging spin-filter techniques, which are based on low energy electron diffraction, are currently of high scientific interest. To improve the spin-detection efficiency a variety of new materials have been introduced in recent years. A new class of promising spin-filter materials are represented by multiferroic systems, as both magnetic and electric ordering exist in these materials. We have investigated Fe/BaTiO3(001), which defines a prominent candidate due to its moderate spontaneous polarization, for spin filter applications calculating diffraction patterns for spin polarized electron…
An ab initio method for calculating electron-phonon coupling parameters is presented. The method is an extension of the plane-wave-based linear-response method for the calculation of lattice dynamics. Results for the mass enhancement parameter and the electron-phonon spectral function for Al, Pb and Li are presented. Comparisons are made to available experimental data.
We review recent developments in electronic structure calculations that go beyond state-of-the-art methods such as density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Specifically, we discuss the following methods: GW as implemented in the Vienna {\it ab initio} simulation package (VASP) with the self energy on the imaginary frequency axis, GW+DMFT, and ab initio dynamical vertex approximation (D$Γ$A). The latter includes the physics of GW, DMFT and non-local correlations beyond, and allows for calculating (quantum) critical exponents. We present results obtained by the thr…
Cluster-assembled metallic films show interesting electrical properties, both in the near-to-percolation regime, when deposited clusters do not form a complete layer yet, and when the film thickness is well above the electrical percolation threshold. Correctly estimating their electrical conductivity is crucial, but, particularly for the latter regime, standard theoretical tools are not quite adequate. We therefore developed a procedure based on an atomically informed mesoscopic model in which ab-initio estimates of electronic transport at the nanoscale are used to reconstruct the conductivity…
