Context. Many well-known bright stars have been observed by the ongoing Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) space mission. For several of them, these new data reveal previously unobserved variability, such as tidally perturbed pulsations in close binary stars. Aims. Using newly detected gravity-mode (g-mode) pulsations in V456 Cyg, we aim to determine the global stellar properties of this short-period eclipsing binary and evaluate the interaction between these pulsations and the tides. Methods. We model the binary orbit and determine the physical properties of the component stars using the TESS photometry and published spectroscopy. We then measure the pulsation frequencies from the residuals of the light curve fit using iterative prewhitening, and analyse them to determine the global asteroseismic stellar parameters. We evaluate the pulsation parameters as a function of the orbital phase. Results. We find that the pulsations belong to the secondary component of V456 Cyg and that this star likely has a uniform radial rotation profile, synchronous ($ν_{\rm rot} = 1.113(14) \rm d^{-1}$) with the binary orbit ($ν_{\rm orb} = 1.122091(8) \rm d^{-1}$). The observed g modes are amplified by almost a factor three in the stellar hemisphere facing the primary. We present evidence that this is caused by tidal perturbation of the pulsations, with the mode coupling being strongly affected. Conclusions. V456 Cyg is only the second object for which tidally perturbed high-order g-mode pulsations are identified, after $π^5$ Ori. This opens up new opportunities for tidal g-mode asteroseismology, as it demonstrates another avenue in which g modes and tides can interact with each other.
The interior physics of stars is currently not well constrained for early-type stars. This is particularly pertinent for multiple systems as binary interaction becomes more prevalent for more massive stars, which strongly affects their evolution. High-precision photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission offers the opportunity to remedy the dearth of observations of pulsating stars that show evidence of binary interaction, specifically pulsating mass-accreting components of semi-detached Algol-type eclipsing binary (oEA) systems. We present the TESS light curve of …
KIC 3230227 is a short period ($P\approx 7.0$ days) eclipsing binary with a very eccentric orbit ($e=0.6$). From combined analysis of radial velocities and {\it Kepler} light curves, this system is found to be composed of two A-type stars, with masses of $M_1=1.84\pm 0.18M_{\odot}$, $M_2=1.73\pm 0.17M_{\odot}$ and radii of $R_1=2.01\pm 0.09R_{\odot}$, $R_2=1.68\pm 0.08 R_{\odot}$ for the primary and secondary, respectively. In addition to an eclipse, the binary light curve shows a brightening and dimming near periastron, making this a somewhat rare eclipsing heartbeat star system. After removi…
This is our regular research in the field of cyclic O-C changes and third components. In this article the results of four new stars investigation is described. These stars are: BD And, SV Cam, V0836 Cyg and XZ CMi. All of them have cyclic O-C curve with linear (BD And, SV Cam and XZ CMi) or parabolic trend (V0836 Cyg). We computed the mass transfer rate, minima possible mass of the third component and their errors for each of the researched stars.
V453 Cyg is an eclipsing binary containing 14 Msun and 11 Msun stars in an eccentric short-period orbit. We have discovered $β$ Cep-type pulsations in this system using TESS data. We identify seven significant pulsation frequencies, between 2.37 and 10.51 d$^{-1}$, in the primary star. These include six frequencies which are separated by yet significantly offset from harmonics of the orbital frequency, indicating they are tidally-perturbed modes. We have determined the physical properties of the system to high precision: V453 Cyg A is the first $β$ Cep pulsator with a precise mass measurement.…
In this paper we analyzed the behavior of the unusual dwarf nova EM Cyg using the data obtained in April-October, 2007 in Vyhorlat observatory (Slovak Republic) and in September, 2006 in Crimean Astrophysical Observatory (Ukraine). During our observations EM Cyg has shown outbursts in every 15-40 days. Because on the light curves of EM Cyg the partial eclipse of an accretion disc is observed we applied the eclipse mapping technique to reconstruct the temperature distribution in eclipsed parts of the disc. Calculations of the accretion rate in the system were made for the quiescent and the outb…
Three presumably young eclipsing binary systems in the direction of the Cygnus OB1, OB3 and OB9 associations are studied. Component spectra are reconstructed and their orbits are determined using light curves and spectra disentangling techniques. V443 Cyg and V456 Cyg have circular orbits, while the light curve of V2107\,Cyg imposes a slightly eccentric orbit ($e=0.045\pm0.03)$. V443 Cyg harbours F-type stars, and not young early-A stars as previously suggested in the literature based on photometry solely. It appears to be situated in the foreground (distance $0.6\pm0.2$ kpc) of the young stel…
We aim to determine the absolute parameters of the components of a poorly studied Algol-type eclipsing binary V2247 Cyg. The data analysis is based on our numerous precise UBVRcIc photometric observations and low resolution spectra. The photometric solution reveals a semi-detached configuration with a less-massive component filling its Roche lobe. The mass ratio, inclination, effective temperatures, and fractional radii were determined. Masses and radii of the components were obtained by a non-direct method. The Eclipse Time Variation (ETV) diagram revealed the period changes.
RR Lyn is a detached eclipsing binary with a 9.95 d orbit containing two A-stars: one metallic-lined and one possibly metal-poor. We use the light curve from the TESS satellite and two sets of published radial velocity measurements to determine the properties of the system to high precision. We find masses of 1.939 +/- 0.007 and 1.510 +/- 0.003 Msun, and radii of 2.564 +/- 0.019 and 1.613 +/- 0.013 Rsun. After adjusting published effective temperatures upwards by 200 K we find a good agreement with theoretical models for a solar chemical composition and an age of 1 Gyr, and a distance slightly…
Two eclipsing binary systems UZ Lyr and BR Cyg are the semi-detached types whose secondary component fill its Roche lobe. Although radial velocity and light curves of these systems have already been investigated separately, both radial velocity and light curves of them are analyzed simultaneously for the first time in the present study . Also, the orbital period changes of these systems are studied. Our results show that the mass transfer between components have negligible effects on the orbital period changes of these systems, but two light-time effects are the reasons of the periodic behavio…
V498 Cyg is an early-B-type binary known to show eclipses on a period of 3.48 d, and two sets of spectral lines. We present the discovery of a second set of eclipses, on a 1.44-d period, in the light curve of this object from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). We develop a model of the light curve to simultaneously fit the properties of both eclipsing binaries and apply this to the TESS observations. We are able to fit the light curve of the fainter system well, but the light curve fit for the brighter system is unable to reproduce either its asymmetric primary eclipse or its ch…
We present the physical properties of the eclipsing binary V2281 Cyg, which shows a light-time effect due to a supposed tertiary component from its eclipse timing variation according to the $Kepler$ observations. The high-resolution spectra and $BVR$ photometric data of the system were obtained at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory and Mount Lemmon Optical Astronomy Observatory, respectively. To determine the fundamental parameters of the eclipsing pair and its circumbinary object, we simultaneously analyzed the radial velocities, light curves, and eclipse times including the $Kepler$ dat…
Massive, eclipsing, double-lined, spectroscopic binaries are not common but are necessary to understand the evolution of massive stars as they are the only direct way to determine stellar masses. They are also the progenitors of energetic phenomena such as X-ray binaries and gamma-ray bursts. We present a photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the candidate binary system Cyg OB2-B17 to show that it is indeed a massive evolved binary. We utilise V band and white-light photometry to obtain a light curve and period of the system, and spectra at different resolutions to calculate preliminary or…
IM Per is a triple star system whose eclipsing pair masses and radii are accurate to within 1 \%. The TESS light curve of the program target exhibits partial eclipses and multiple oscillations with mmag-level amplitudes. It is found that the oscillations affect eclipse timing measurements. Binary modeling of the high-quality TESS data indicates that the eclipsing components of the triple system are twin dwarfs with parameters of $M_2$/$M_1$ = 0.995, $R_2$/$R_1$ = 0.901, and $Δ$($T_{\rm eff,1}$--$T_{\rm eff,2}$) = 12 K in an eccentric ($e$ = 0.049), detached configuration. The third light of $l…
The study of pulsating stars in eclipsing binaries holds the promise of combining two different ways of measuring the physical properties of a star to obtain improved constraints on stellar theory. Gravity (g) mode pulsations such as those found in $γ$ Doradus stars can be used to probe rotational profiles, mixing and magnetic fields. Until recently few $γ$ Doradus stars in eclipsing binaries were known. We have discovered g-mode pulsations in four detached eclipsing binary systems from light curves obtained by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and present an analysis of their e…
We report the discovery of the third tidally tilted pulsator, TIC 63328020. Observations with the TESS satellite reveal binary eclipses with an orbital period of 1.1057 d, and $δ$ Scuti-type pulsations with a mode frequency of 21.09533 d$^{-1}$. This pulsation exhibits a septuplet of orbital sidelobes as well as a harmonic quintuplet. Using the oblique pulsator model, the primary oscillation is identified as a sectoral dipole mode with $l = 1, |m| = 1$. We find the pulsating star to have $M_1 \simeq 2.5\, {\rm M}_\odot$, $R_1 \simeq 3 \, {\rm R}_\odot$, and $T_{\rm eff,1} \simeq 8000$ K, while…
We determine the age of the eclipsing binary V380 Cygni, whose components have a significant mass ratio, $M_B/M_A\approx$ 0.6. Because this binary exhibits spectral lines of both components, the values of masses and radii could be determined with a very high accuracy. Assuming that both components are on the main sequence, we derive the age of about 16 Myr. However, in this case the primary needs a large overshooting from the convective core ($f_{\rm{ov}} \approx 0.04$) and higher metallicity ($Z \approx 0.02$). It is difficult to tell whether such a high value of overshooting from the convect…
New Multi-color $B$ $V$ $R_c$ $I_c$ photometric observation are presented for W UMa type eclipsing binary V1073 Cyg. The multi-color light curves analysis with the Wilson-Devinney(W-D) procedure acquired the absolute parameters of this system, showing that V1073Cyg is a shallow contact binary system with fill-out factor $f=0.124(\pm0.011)$. We collected all available times of light minima spanning 119 years including CCD data to construct the O-C curve and made detailed O-C analysis. The O-C diagram shows that the period change is complex. There exist a long-term continuous decrease and a cycl…
A prerequisite for probing theortical evolutionary models for high-mass stars is the determination of stellar physical properties with a high accuracy. We do this for three binary systems containing components with masses above 10 Msun: V478 Cyg, AH Cep and V453 Cyg. New high-resolution and high-S/N echelle spectra were secured and analysed using spectral disentangling, yielding improved orbital elements and the individual spectra for the component stars. In conjuction with a re-analysis of archival light curves, the stellar masses and radii were measured to accuracies of 1.5-2.5% and 1.0-1.9%…
We observed spectroscopically the eclipsing binary system T-Cyg1-01385 in order to determine physical properties of the components. The double-lined nature of the system is revealed for the first time and the radial velocities are obtained for both stars. We have derived masses, radii and luminosities for both components. Analyses of the radial velocities and the KeplerCam and the T$r$ES light curves yielded masses of M$_1$=1.059$\pm$0.032 \Msun ~and M$_2$=0.342$\pm$0.017 {\Msun} and radii of R$_1$=1.989$\pm$0.022 {\Rsun} and R$_2$=0.457$\pm$0.013 {\Rsun}. Locations of the low-mass companion i…
Several low-mass eclipsing binary stars show larger than expected radii for their measured mass, metallicity and age. One proposed mechanism for this radius inflation involves inhibited internal convection and starspots caused by strong magnetic fields. One particular eclipsing binary, T-Cyg1-12664, has proven confounding to this scenario. \citet{Cakirli2013a} measured a radius for the secondary component that is twice as large as model predictions for stars with the same mass and age, but a primary mass that is consistent with predictions. \citet[][]{Iglesias2017} independently measured the r…
Combining with our newest CCD times of light minimum of EM Cygni, all 45 available times of light minimum including 7 data with large scatters are compiled and the updated O-C analysis is made. The bestfit for the O-C diagram of EM Cygni is a quadratic-plus-sinusoidal fit. The secular orbital period decrease rate -2.5(\pm 0.3)x10^{-11} s s^{-1} means that magnetic braking effect with a rate of mass loss via stellar wind, 2.3x10^{-10}Msunyr^{-1}, is needed for explaining the observed orbital period decrease. Moreover, for explaining the significant cyclical period change with a period of \sim 1…
We report spectroscopic observations of the 2.63 day, detached, F-type main-sequence eclipsing binary V2154 Cyg. We use our observations together with existing $uvby$ photometric measurements to derive accurate absolute masses and radii for the stars good to better than 1.5%. We obtain masses of M1 = 1.269 +/- 0.017 M(Sun) and M2 = 0.7542 +/- 0.0059 M(Sun), radii of R1 = 1.477 +/- 0.012 R(Sun) and R2 = 0.7232 +/- 0.0091 R(Sun), and effective temperatures of 6770 +/- 150 K and 5020 +/- 150 K for the primary and secondary stars, respectively. Both components appear to have their rotations synchr…
Context. Thanks to the high-precision photometry from space missions such as Kepler and TESS, tidal perturbations and tilting of pulsations have been detected in more than a dozen binary systems. However, only two of these were g-mode pulsators. Aims. We aim to detect tidally perturbed g modes in additional binary systems and characterise them observationally. Methods. We perform a custom data reduction of the available Kepler and TESS photometry of a well-studied sample of 35 binary systems with gamma Doradus pulsators. For each target, we model the binary signal using a sum of 100 sine waves…
We present spectroscopic observations of the double-lined early type eclipsing binary V1898\,Cyg. The radial velocities were obtained by means of the cross-correlation technique. Analyses of the BV light curves and RVs led to determination of the fundamental stellar parameters of the V1898\,Cyg's components. We derived new ephemerides for the eclipsing pair using the observed times of mid-eclipses. The residuals between the observed and computed times of mid-eclipses were analysed and a rate of the period change $\dot{P}/P= 6.68 \times 10^{-7}\,yr^{-1}$ was obtained. The orbital period is incr…
We present the characterization of KIC 4142768, an eclipsing binary with two evolved A-type stars in an eccentric orbit with a period of 14 days. We measure the fundamental parameters of the two components ($M_1=2.05M_{\odot}, R_1=2.96R_{\odot}$ and $M_2=2.05M_{\odot}, R_2=2.51R_{\odot}$) by combining {\it Kepler} photometry and spectra from {\it Keck} HIRES. The measured surface rotation rates are only one-fifth of the pseudo-synchronous rate of the eccentric orbit. Fourier spectrum of the light curve reveals hybrid pulsations of $δ$ Scuti and $γ$ Doradus type, with pulsation frequencies at a…
New CCD photometry is presented for the hot overcontact binary DK Cyg, together with reasonable explanations for the light and period variations. Historical light and velocity curves from 1962 to 2012 were simultaneously analyzed with the Wilson-Devinney (W-D) synthesis code. The brightness disturbances were satisfactorily modeled by applying a magnetic cool spot on the primary star. Based on 261 times of minimum light including 116 new timings and spanning more than 87 yrs, a period study reveals that the orbital period has varied due to a periodic oscillation superposed on an upward parabola…
Spectra that cover 0.63 - 0.69um with a spectral resolution ~ 17000 are presented of the W Serpentis system V367 Cygni. Absorption lines of FeII and SiII that form in a circumsystem shell are prominent features, and the depths of these are stable with time, suggesting that the shell is smoothly distributed and well-mixed. Further evidence of uniformity comes from modest radial velocity variations measured in the deepest parts of the shell lines. It is suggested that motions previously attributed to rotation of the shell are instead artifacts of contamination from the donor star spectrum. A don…
Eclipsing binary systems form the fundamental basis of Astronomy in the sense that they are the primary means to determine fundamental stellar astrophysical quantities such as mass, radius, and temperature. Furthermore, they allow us to study the internal dynamos and resulting magnetic cycles of stars that we would normally only be able to study for one star, our Sun. The systems themselves are extremely interesting objects, consisting of a multitude of configurations that are tied together by a complex evolutionary history. Finally, they allow us to test theories of stellar structure and even…
We report new spectroscopic and photometric observations of the main-sequence, detached, eccentric, double-lined eclipsing binary V541 Cyg (P = 15.34 days, e = 0.468). Using these observations together with existing measurements we determine the component masses and radii to better than 1% precision: M1 = 2.335 +0.017/-0.013 MSun, M2 = 2.260 +0.016/-0.013 MSun, R1 = 1.859 +0.012/-0.009 RSun, and R2 = 1.808 +0.015/-0.013 RSun. The nearly identical B9.5 stars have estimated temperatures of 10650 +/- 200 K and 10350 +/- 200 K. A comparison of these properties with current stellar evolution models…
Our main aim is the first detailed analysis of the two eclipsing binaries V456 Oph and V490 Cyg. The system V456 Oph has been studied both photometrically via an analysis of its light curve observed by the INTEGRAL/OMC and by the period analysis of all available times of minima. V490 Cyg has been studied by means of a period analysis only. Many new times of minima for both systems have recently been observed and derived. This allows us for the first time to study in detail the processes that affect both binaries. The main result is the discovery that both systems have eccentric orbits. For V45…
The eclipsing and double-lined spectroscopic binary V380 Cyg is an extremely important probe of stellar evolution: its primary component is a high-mass star at the brink of leaving the main sequence whereas the secondary star is still in the early part of its main sequence lifetime. We present extensive high-resolution echelle and grating spectroscopy from Ondrejov, Calar Alto, Victoria and La Palma. We apply spectral disentangling to unveil the individual spectra of the two stars and obtain new spectroscopic elements. The secondary star contributes only about 6% of the total light, which rema…
The Cygnus OB2 Association is one of the nearest and largest collections of massive stars in the Galaxy. Situated at the heart of the "Cygnus X" complex of star-forming regions and molecular clouds, its distance has proven elusive owing to the ambiguous nature of kinematic distances along this $\ell\simeq80$ degree sightline and the heavy, patchy extinction. In an effort to refine the three-dimensional geometry of key Cygnus~X constituents, we have measured distances to four eclipsing double-lined OB-type spectroscopic binaries that are probable members of Cyg~OB2. We find distances of $1.33\p…
The eclipsing binary T-Cyg1-12664 was observed both spectroscopically and photometrically. Radial velocities of both components and ground-based VRI light curves were obtained. The Kepler's R-data and radial velocities for the system were analysed simultaneously. Masses and radii were obtained as 0.680$\pm$0.021 M$_{\odot}$ and 0.613$\pm$0.007 R$_{\odot}$for the primary and 0.341$\pm$0.012M$_{\odot}$ and 0.897$\pm$0.012R$_{\odot}$ for the secondary star. The distance to the system was estimated as 127$\pm$14 pc. The observed wave-like distortion at out-of-eclipse is modeled with two separate s…
Detached eclipsing binaries are remarkable systems to provide accurate fundamental stellar parameters. The fundamental stellar parameters and the metallicity values of stellar systems are needed to deeply understand the stellar evolution and formation. In this study, we focus on the detailed spectroscopic and photometric studies of three detached eclipsing binary systems, V372\,And, V2080\,Cyg, and CF\,Lyn to obtain their accurate stellar, atmospheric parameters, and chemical compositions. An analysis of light and radial velocity curves was carried out to derive the orbital and stellar paramete…
The observational mass-radius relation of main sequence stars with masses between ~0.3 and 1.0 Msun reveals deviations between the stellar radii predicted by models and the observed radii of stars in detached binaries. We generate an accurate physical model of the low-mass eclipsing binary T-Cyg1-12664 in the Kepler mission field to measure the physical parameters of its components and to compare them with the prediction of theoretical stellar evolution models. We analyze the Kepler mission light curve of T-Cyg1-12664 to accurately measure the times and phases of the primary and secondary ecli…
Thanks to its long and rich observational history and rapid apsidal motion, the massive eclipsing binary Y Cyg represents one of the cornestones to critical tests of stellar evolution theory for massive stars. Yet, the determination of the basic physical properties is less accurate than it could be given the existing number of spectral and photometric observations. Our goal is to analyze all these data simultaneously with the new dedicated series of our own spectral and photometric observations from observatories widely separated in longitude. We obtained new series of UBV observations at thre…
CCD observations of 68 eclipsing binary systems, candidates for containing δ Scuti components, were obtained. Their light curves are analysed using the PERIOD04 software for possible pulsational behaviour. For the systems QY Aql, CZ Aqr, TY Cap, WY Cet, UW Cyg, HL Dra, HZ Dra, AU Lac, CL Lyn and IO UMa, complete light curves were observed due to the detection of a pulsating component. All of them, except QY Aql and IO UMa, are analysed with modern astronomical softwares in order to determine their geometrical and pulsational characteristics. Spectroscopic observations of WY Cet and UW Cyg were…
We present TESS photometry of the triple star system V1031 Ori (AB)C, which exhibits short-period oscillations superimposed on an eclipsing light curve. The high-quality data were analyzed in detail and combined with the published spectroscopic measurements to obtain the fundamental stellar parameters of the program target. The masses and radii of the eclipsing pair (AB) were determined to about 0.5 \% and 0.7 \% precision, respectively. We found 23 significant frequencies in two ranges of $<$ 2 day$^{-1}$ and 10.9$-$12.7 day$^{-1}$ from the eclipse-subtracted residuals. Among them, sixteen in…
We present a catalog of photometrically variable stars discovered within two 21'.3 X 21'.3 fields centered on the Cygnus OB2 association. There have hitherto been no deep optical variability studies of Cyg OB2 despite it being replete with early-type massive stars, perhaps due to the high and variable extinction (up to A_V ~ 20) that permeates much of the region. Here we provide results of the first variability study with this combination of spatial coverage (~ 0.5 deg) and photometric depth (R ~ 21 mag). We find 121 stars to be variable in both R- and I-band, 116 of them newly discovered. Of …
We systematically searched for gravity- and Rossby-mode period spacing patterns in Kepler eclipsing binaries with $γ$ Doradus pulsators. These stars provide an excellent opportunity to test the theory of tidal synchronisation and angular momentum transport in F- and A-type stars. We discovered 35 systems that show clear patterns, including the spectroscopic binary KIC 10080943. Combined with 45 non-eclipsing binaries with $γ$ Dor components that have been found using pulsation timing, we measured their near-core rotation rates and asymptotic period spacings. We find that many stars are tidally…
Stellar components in binaries are subject to tidal forces which influence asteroseismic properties. Tidally pertubed pulsations have been reported for different objects but none of these are in their pre-main sequence phase of evolution. This makes RS Cha, consisting of two $δ$ Scuti stars and with pulsational characteristics influenced by tidal effects , the first such object observed. We aim to investigate the pulsational properties of the eclipsing binary RS Cha in terms of the theory of tidally perturbed pulsations. Based on photometric time series obtained from the TESS satellite, we per…
KIC 5773205 is the least luminous eclipsing M dwarf found in the Villanova catalog of eclipsing binaries detected by the {\it Kepler} mission. We processed and analyzed the three available quarters of mission data for this star and discovered a persistent periodic variation of the light curve with a period, which is in exact 4:5 commensurability to the orbital period. Three routes of interpretation are considered: 1) non-radial pulsations excited by the tidal interaction at a specific eigenfrequency; 2) a high-order spin-orbit resonance caused by the tides; 3) an ellipsoidal deformation caused…
New multi-color UBVR light curves of the eclipsing binary KR Cyg were obtained in 2005. Photometric solutions were derived using the Wilson- Devinney method. The result shows that KR Cyg is a near-contact binary system with a large effective temperature difference between the components, approximately 5230 K. All the times of minimum light were collected and combined with our observations obtained in 2010 and 2011. Analysing all the times of mid-eclipse, we found for the first time a possible periodic oscillation with an amplitude of 0.001 days and a period of ~76 years. The periodic oscillati…
Eclipsing binary stars are rare and extremely valuable astrophysical laboratories that make possible precise determination of fundamental stellar parameters. Investigation of early-type chemically peculiar stars in eclipsing binaries provides important information for understanding the origin and evolutionary context of their anomalous surface chemistry. In this study we discuss observations of eclipse variability in six mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars monitored by the TESS satellite. These discoveries double the number of known eclipsing HgMn stars and yield several interesting objects requiri…
DK Cyg (P = 0.4707) is a W Ursae Majoris type eclipsing binary system that undergoes complete eclipses. All the published photoelectric data have been collected and utilized to re-examine and update the period behavior of the system. A significant period increase with rate of 12.590x10-11 day/cycle was calculated. New period and ephemeris has been calculated for the system. A long term photometric solution study was performed and a light curve elements were calculated. We investigated the evolutionary status of the system using theoretical evolutionary models.
Red-giant stars are proving to be an incredible source of information for testing models of stellar evolution, as asteroseismology has opened up a window into their interiors. Such insights are a direct result of the unprecedented data from space missions CoRoT and Kepler as well as recent theoretical advances. Eclipsing binaries are also fundamental astrophysical objects, and when coupled with asteroseismology, they would provide two independent methods to obtain masses and radii and exciting opportunities to develop highly constrained stellar models. Gaulme et al. (2013) reported the discove…
Eclipsing binaries (EBs) are unique targets for measuring precise stellar properties and constrain stellar evolution models. In particular, it is possible to measure at the percent level masses and radii of both components of a double-lined spectroscopic EB. Since the advent of high-precision photometric space missions (MOST, CoRoT, Kepler, BRITE, TESS), the use of stellar pulsation properties to infer stellar interiors and dynamics constitutes a revolution for low-mass star studies. The Kepler mission has led to the discovery of thousands of classical pulsators such as $δ$ Scuti and solar-lik…
With the aim of providing new and up-to-date absolute parameters of some close binary systems, new BVR CCD photometry was carried out at the Ankara University Observatory (AUG) for five eclipsing binaries, ET Boo, V1123 Tau, V1191 Cyg, V1073 Cyg and V357 Peg between April, 2007 and October, 2008. In this paper, we present the orbital solutions for these systems obtained by simultaneous light and radial velocity curve analyses. Extensive orbital solution and absolute parameters for ET Boo system were given for the first time through this study. According to the analyses, ET Boo is a detached bi…
We present an analysis of the high-mass eclipsing binary system VV Ori based on photometry from the TESS satellite. The primary star (B1V, 9.5 Msun) shows beta Cephei pulsations and the secondary (B7V, 3.8 Msun) is possibly a slowly-pulsating B star. We detect 51 significant oscillation frequencies, including two multiplets with separations equal to the orbital frequency, indicating that the pulsations are tidally perturbed. We analyse the TESS light curve and published radial velocities to determine the physical properties of the system. Both stars are only the second of their pulsation type …
BW Aqr is a bright eclipsing binary star containing a pair of F7V stars. The absolute parameters of this binary (masses, radii, etc.) are known to good precision so they are often used to test stellar models, particularly in studies of convective overshooting. ... Maxted & Hutcheon (2018) analysed the Kepler K2 data for BW Aqr and noted that it shows variability between the eclipses that may be caused by tidally induced pulsations. ... Table 1 shows the absolute parameters for BW Aqr derived from an improved analysis of the Kepler K2 light curve plus the RV measurements from both Imbert (1979)…
We determined the orbits and stellar parameters of three eccentric eclipsing binaries by light curve solutions of their Kepler data. KIC 8111622 and KIC 10518735 undergo total eclipses while KIC 8196180 reveals partial eclipses. The target components are G and K stars, excluding the primary of KIC 8196180 which is early F star. KIC 8196180 reveals well-visible tidally-induced feature at periastron, i.e. it is an eclipsing heartbeat star. The characteristics of the observed periastron feature (shape, width and amplitude) confirm the theoretical predictions. There are additional out-of-eclipse v…
The star HII 2407 is a member of the relatively young Pleiades star cluster and was previously discovered to be a single-lined spectroscopic binary. It is newly identified here within $Kepler$/$K2$ photometric time series data as an eclipsing binary system. Mutual fitting of the radial velocity and photometric data leads to an orbital solution and constraints on fundamental stellar parameters. While the primary has arrived on the main sequence, the secondary is still pre-main-sequence and we compare our results for the $M/M_\odot$ and $R/R_\odot$ values with stellar evolutionary models. We als…
We investigate the nature of tidal effects in compact triple-star systems. The hierarchical structure of a triple system produces tidal forcing at high frequencies unobtainable in binary systems, allowing for the tidal excitation of high frequency p-modes in the stellar components. The tidal forcing exists even for circular, aligned, and synchronized systems. We calculate the magnitude and frequencies of three-body tidal forcing on the central primary star for circular and coplanar orbits, and we estimate the amplitude of the tidally excited oscillation modes. We also calculate the secular orb…
WR~21a was known as a massive spectroscopic binary composed of an O2.5 If*/WN6ha primary and an O3 V((f*))z secondary. Although a minimum value, the mass estimated for the primary placed it as one of the most massive stars found in our Galaxy. We report the discovery of photometric variations in the time series observations carried out by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). These light variations are interpreted as formed by two main components: a sharp partial eclipse of the O3 secondary by the O2.5/WN6 star, and tidally excited oscillations. Based on the light minima a new ephe…
V1022 Cas has been known as a spectroscopic binary for a century. It was found to be eclipsing based on photometry from the Hipparcos satellite, and an astrometric orbit was recently obtained from near-infrared interferometry. We present the first high-precision measurement of the radii of the stars based on light curves obtained by the TESS satellite. Combined with published radial velocities from high-resolution spectra, we measure the masses of the stars to be 1.626 +/- 0.001 Msun and 1.609 +/- 0.001 Msun, and the radii to be 2.591 +/- 0.026 Rsun and 2.472 +/- 0.027 Rsun. The 12.16-d orbit …
