Massive stars disrupt their natal molecular cloud material through radiative and mechanical feedback processes. These processes have profound effects on the evolution of interstellar matter in our Galaxy and throughout the Universe, from the era of vigorous star formation at redshifts of 1-3 to the present day. The dominant feedback processes can be probed by observations of the Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) where the far-ultraviolet photons of massive stars create warm regions of gas and dust in the neutral atomic and molecular gas. PDR emission provides a unique tool to study in detail the physical and chemical processes that are relevant for most of the mass in inter- and circumstellar media including diffuse clouds, proto-planetary disks and molecular cloud surfaces, globules, planetary nebulae, and star-forming regions. PDR emission dominates the infrared (IR) spectra of star-forming galaxies. Most of the Galactic and extragalactic observations obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will therefore arise in PDR emission. In this paper we present an Early Release Science program using the MIRI, NIRSpec, and NIRCam instruments dedicated to the observations of an emblematic and nearby PDR: the Orion Bar. These early JWST observations will provide template datasets designed to identify key PDR characteristics in JWST observations. These data will serve to benchmark PDR models and extend them into the JWST era. We also present the Science-Enabling products that we will provide to the community. These template datasets and Science-Enabling products will guide the preparation of future proposals on star-forming regions in our Galaxy and beyond and will facilitate data analysis and interpretation of forthcoming JWST observations.

Using the 0.9--4.4~$μ$m imaging data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Early Release Observation in the SMACS J0723.3-7327 galaxy cluster field, we discuss the properties of three submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) detected by the Atacama Large Millimeter Array. These sources are magnified by 1.4--2.1$\times$due to gravitational lensing. This is the first time that SMG host galaxies are resolved in the rest-frame near-infrared (NIR). One source was previous undetected by HST, while the remaining two are disk galaxies with Sérsic indices of $\sim 0.9$ and star formation rates on or just bel…

On July 13, 2022, NASA released to the whole world the data obtained by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Early Release Observations (ERO). These are the first set of science-grade data from this long-awaited facility, marking the beginning of a new era in astronomy. In the study of the early universe, JWST will allow us to push far beyond z ~ 11, the redshift boundary previously imposed by the 1.7 um red cut-off of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). In contrast, JWST's NIRCam reaches 5 um. Among the JWST ERO targets there is a nearby galaxy cluster SMACS 0723-73, which is a massive cluster…
We present criteria for separately classifying stars and unresolved background galaxies in photometric catalogs generated with the point spread function (PSF) fitting photometry software DOLPHOT from images taken of Draco II, WLM, and M92 with the Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) on JWST. Photometric quality metrics from DOLPHOT in one or two filters can recover a pure sample of stars. Conversely, colors formed between short-wavelength (SW) and long-wavelength (LW) filters can be used to effectively identify pure samples of galaxies. Our results highlight that the existing DOLPHOT output paramete…

We use globular cluster data from the Resolved Stellar Populations Early Release Science (ERS) program to validate the flux calibration for the Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We find a significant flux offset between the eight short wavelength detectors, ranging from 1-23% (about 0.01-0.2 mag) that affects all NIRCam imaging observations. We deliver improved zeropoints for the ERS filters and show that alternate zeropoints derived by the community also improve the calibration significantly. We also find that the detector offsets appear to be time variab…

The JWST discovery of a number of super-early (redshift $z>10$), blue galaxies requires these systems to be essentially dust-free in spite of their large stellar masses. A possible explanation is that dust is evacuated by radiatively-driven outflows. We test this hypothesis by deriving the Eddington ratio $λ_E=L_{\rm bol}/L_{E}$, where $L_{\rm bol}$ is the bolometric luminosity produced by star-formation and possible black hole accretion, for 134 galaxies at $6.5< z <16$. We find a strong anti-correlation between $λ_E$ and dust UV optical depth, $τ_{1500} \propto λ_E^{-0.63}$; also, $λ_E$ incr…

We measure the extinction law in the 30 Dor star formation region in the Large Magellanic Cloud using Early Release Observations taken with Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) onboard the JWST, thereby extending previous studies with the Hubble Space Telescope to the infrared. We use red clump stars to derive the direction of the reddening vector in twelve bands and present the extinction law in this massive star forming region from $0.3$ to $4.7\,μ$m. At wavelengths longer than 1 $μ$m, we find a ratio of total and selective extinction twice as high as in the diffuse Milky Way interstellar medium an…
We conduct a comprehensive study on dropout galaxy candidates at $z\sim9-16$ using the first 90 arcmin$^2$ JWST/NIRCam images taken by the early release observations (ERO) and early release science (ERS) programs. With the JWST simulation images, we find that a number of foreground interlopers are selected with a weak photo-$z$ determination ($Δχ^2>4$). We thus carefully apply a secure photo-$z$ selection criterion ($Δχ^2>9$) and conventional color criteria with confirmations of the ERO NIRSpec spectroscopic redshifts, and obtain a total of 23 dropout galaxies at $z\sim9-16$, including two can…
Extremely red quasars, with bolometric luminosities exceeding $10^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$, are a fascinating high-redshift population that is absent in the local universe. They are the best candidates for supermassive black holes accreting at rates at or above the Eddington limit, and they are associated with the most rapid and powerful outflows of ionized gas known to date. They are also hosted by massive galaxies. Here we present the first integral field unit (IFU) observations of a high-redshift quasar obtained by the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on board the James Webb Space Telescope (…
We examine the assembly process and the observability of a first galaxy (M_vir~10^9 solar mass at z~8) with cosmological zoom-in, hydrodynamic simulations, including the radiative, mechanical, and chemical feedback exerted by the first generations of stars. To assess the detectability of such dwarf systems with the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), we construct the spectral energy distribution for the simulated galaxy in a post-processing fashion. We find that while the non-ionizing UV continuum emitted by the simulated galaxy is expected to be below the JWST detection limit, the gal…
We present rest-frame optical emission-line flux ratio measurements for five $z>5$ galaxies observed by the JWST Near-Infared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) in the SMACS 0723 Early Release Observations. We add several quality-control and post-processing steps to the NIRSpec pipeline reduction products in order to ensure reliable relative flux calibration of emission lines that are closely separated in wavelength, despite the uncertain \textit{absolute} spectrophotometry of the current version of the reductions. Compared to $z\sim3$ galaxies in the literature, the $z>5$ galaxies have similar [OIII]$λ$5…
We present the JWST Resolved Stellar Populations Early Release Science (ERS) science program. We obtained 27.5 hours of NIRCam and NIRISS imaging of three targets in the Local Group (Milky Way globular cluster M92, ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Draco II, star-forming dwarf galaxy WLM), which span factors of $\sim10^5$ in luminosity, $\sim10^4$ in distance, and $\sim10^5$ in surface brightness. We describe the survey strategy, scientific and technical goals, implementation details, present select NIRCam color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), and validate the NIRCam exposure time calculator (ETC). Our CMDs…
We present the reduced images and multi-wavelength catalog of the first JWST NIRCam extra-galactic observations from the GLASS Early Release Science Program, obtained as coordinated parallels of the NIRISS observations of the Abell 2744 cluster. Images in seven bands (F090W, F115W, F150W, F200W, F277W, F356W, F444W) have been reduced using an augmented version of the official JWST pipeline; we discuss the procedures adopted to remove or mitigate defects in the raw images. We obtain a multi--band catalog by means of forced aperture photometry on PSF-matched images at the position of F444W-detec…
We exploit James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRCam observations from the GLASS-JWST-Early Release Science program to investigate galaxy stellar masses at z>7. We first show that JWST observations reduce the uncertainties on the stellar mass by a factor of at least 5-10, when compared with the highest quality data sets available to date. We then study the UV mass-to-light ratio, finding that galaxies exhibit a two orders of magnitude range of M/L_UV values for a given luminosity, indicative of a broad variety of physical conditions and star formation histories. As a consequence, previous estim…

The Early Release Observations (EROs) of JWST beautifully demonstrate the promise of JWST in characterizing the universe at cosmic dawn. We analyze the ERO spectra of three $z \sim 8$ galaxies to determine their metallicities, gas temperatures and ionization. These galaxies offer the first opportunity to understand the physical properties of epoch-of-reionization galaxies through detailed rest-optical emission line spectroscopy. We show that these objects have metal abundances $12+\log[O/H] \approx 6.9 - 8.2$, based on both the $T_e$ method and on a recent calibration of the $R_{23}$ metallici…

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has discovered a surprising abundance of bright galaxy candidates in the very early Universe ($< 500$ Myrs after the Big Bang), calling into question current galaxy formation models. Spectroscopy is needed to confirm the primeval nature of these candidates, as well as to understand how the first galaxies form stars and grow. Here we present deep spectroscopic and continuum ALMA observations towards GHZ2/GLASS-z12, one of the brightest and most robust candidates at $z > 10$ identified in the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science Program. We detect a $5.8 σ$ line…
We present new 0.3-21 micron photometry of SN 2021aefx in the spiral galaxy NGC 1566 at +357 days after B-band maximum, including the first detection of any SN Ia at >15 micron. These observations follow earlier JWST observations of SN 2021aefx at +255 days after the time of maximum brightness, allowing us to probe the temporal evolution of the emission properties. We measure the fraction of flux emerging at different wavelengths and its temporal evolution. Additionally, the integrated 0.3-14 micron decay rate of $Δm_{0.3-14} = 1.35 \pm 0.05$ mag/100 days is higher than the decline rate from t…
The increasing number of distant galaxies observed with ALMA by the ALPINE and REBELS surveys and the early release observations of the JWST promise to revolutionize our understanding of cosmic star formation and the assembly of normal, dusty galaxies. Here we introduce a new suite of cosmological simulations performed with \texttt{dustyGadget} to interpret high-redshift data. We investigate the comoving star formation history, the stellar mass density and a number of galaxy scaling relations such as the galaxy main sequence, the stellar-to-halo mass and dust-to-stellar mass relations at $z > …
As the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has become fully operational, early-release data are now available to begin building the tools and calibrations for precision point-source photometry and astrometry in crowded cluster environments. Here, we present our independent reduction of NIRCam imaging of the metal-poor globular cluster M92, which were collected under Director's Discretionary Early Release Science programme ERS-1334. We derived empirical models of the Point Spread Function (PSF) for filters F090W, F150W, F277W, and F444W, and find that these PSFs: (i) are generally under-sampled (…
