We experimentally demonstrate the difference between a ridge polariton laser, and a conventional edge-emitting ridge laser operating under electron-hole population inversion. The horizontal laser cavities are 20 -- 60 $μ$m long GaN etched ridge structures with vertical Bragg reflectors. We investigate the laser threshold under optical pumping and assess quantitatively the effect of a varying optically-pumped length. The laser effect is achieved for an exciton reservoir length of just 15% of the cavity length, which would not be possible in a conventional ridge laser, with an inversion-less polaritonic gain about 10 times larger than in equivalent GaN lasers. The modelling of the cavity free spectral range demonstrates the polaritonic nature of the modes.
We use focused-ion-beam milling of a single-crystal Au surface to fabricate a 590-nm-long linear ridge that acts as a surface plasmon nanoresonator. Cathodoluminescence imaging spectroscopy is then used to excite and image surface plasmons on the ridge. Principal component analysis reveals distinct plasmonic modes, which proves confinement of surface-plasmon oscillations to the ridge. Boundary-element-method calculations confirm that a linear ridge is able to support highly-localized surface-plasmon modes (mode diameter < 100 nm). The results demonstrate that focused-ion-beam milling can be us…
We demonstrate the generation of light in an optical waveguide strongly coupled to a periodic array of metallic nanoantennas. This coupling gives rise to hybrid waveguide-plasmon polaritons (WPPs), which undergo a transmutation from plasmon to waveguide mode and viceversa as the eigenfrequency detuning of the bare states transits through zero. Near zero detuning, the structure is nearly transparent in the far-field but sustains strong local field enhancements inside the waveguide. Consequently, light-emitting WPPs are strongly enhanced at energies and in-plane momenta for which WPPs minimize l…
We demonstrate enhanced light extraction for monochrome top-emitting organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The enhancement by a factor of 1.2 compared to a reference sample is caused by the use of a hole transport layer (HTL) material possessing a low refractive index (1.52). The low refractive index reduces the in-plane wave vector of the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) excited at the interface between the bottom opaque metallic electrode (anode) and the HTL. The shift of the SPP dispersion relation decreases the power dissipated into lost evanescent excitations and thus increases the outcou…
Angle-independent, narrowband emission is required for many optoelectronic devices, ranging from high-definition displays to sensors. However, emerging materials for electroluminescent devices, such as organics and perovskites, show spectrally broad emission due to intrinsic disorder. Coupling this emission to an optical resonance reduces the linewidth, but at the cost of inheriting the severe angular dispersion of the resonator. Strongly coupling a dispersionless exciton state to a narrowband optical microcavity could overcome this issue; however, electrically pumped emission from the resulti…
A graphene sheet gated with a ridged ground plane, creating a soft-boundary (SB) graphene nanoribbon, is considered. By adjusting the ridge parameters and bias voltage a channel can be created on the graphene which can guide TM surface plasmon polaritons (SPP). Two types of modes are found; fundemental and higher-order modes with no apparent cutoff frequency and with energy distributed over the created channel, and edge modes with energy concen-trated at the soft-boundary edge. Dispersion curves, electric near-field patterns, and current distributions of these modes are determined. Since the l…
The generation and control of exotic phenomena in organic electroluminescent microcavities, such as polariton lasing and non-linear optical effects, operating in strong and ultra-strong coupling regimes, is still a great challenge. The main obstacles originate from the small number of molecular classes investigated as well as from the absence of an efficient strategy aiming at the maximization of polariton states population. Here we report on bright polariton organic light emitting diodes made of a coumarin fluorescent dye emitting layer, working in the ultra-strong coupling regime up to a cou…
Vertical cavity surface emitting terahertz lasers can be realized in conventional semiconductor microcavities with embedded quantum wells in the strong coupling regime. The cavity is to be pumped optically at half the frequency of the 2p exciton state. Once a threshold population of 2p excitons is achieved, a stimulated terahertz transition populates the lower exciton-polariton branch, and the cavity starts emitting laser light both in the optical and terahertz ranges. The lasing threshold is sensitive to the statistics of photons of the pumping light.
In the field of spin-controlled semiconductor lasers, massive effort has been focused upon materials with long spin relaxation times (~ns). In contrast, we demonstrate room-temperature spin-polarized ultrafast pulsed lasing in InGaAs quantum wells (~10 ps) embedded within a GaAs microcavity. The microcavity studied here is similar to vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) used in optical communication. Unlike a VCSEL, the present polariton laser has nonlinear output and energy shifts owing to the mixing of the free-carrier polarization and cavity light field. At room temperature, we o…
Vector vortex beams are a class of optical beams with singularities in their space-variant polarization. Vector vortex beam lasers have applications in many areas including imaging and communication, where vertical-cavity lasers emitting Gaussian beams have been most widely used so far. Generation of vector vortex beams from vertical-cavity lasers has required external control or modulation. Here, by utilizing a polarization-selective subwavelength grating as one of the reflectors in a vertical semiconductor microcavity, we design the spin textures of the polariton mode and demonstrate polarit…
A laser threshold is determined by the gain condition, which has been progressively reduced by the use of heterostructures and of quantum confinement. The polariton laser is the ultimate step of this evolution: coherent emission is obtained from the spontaneous decay of an exciton-polariton condensate, without the achievement of any gain condition. ZnO, with its unique excitonic properties, is the best choice for a blue/UV-emitting polariton laser device. We report on the fabrication of a new family of fully hybrid microcavities that combine the best-quality ZnO material available (bulk substr…

Organic exciton-photon polariton lasers have recently been shown to be remarkable candidates for the realization of efficient sources of coherent light operating at room temperature. While their thresholds are now comparable with conventional organic photon lasers, tuning of molecular conformation and orientation as a means to further enhance their performance remains largely unexplored. Here, we first report a two-fold reduction in the threshold of a polariton laser based on a high-Q microcavity filled with an active layer of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) when 15% β-phase conformation is in…
The efficiency of light coupling to surface plasmon polariton (SPP) represents a very important issue in plasmonics and laser fabrication of topographies in various solids. To illustrate the role of pre-patterrned surfaces and impact of laser polsarisation in the excitation of electromagnetic modes and periodic pattern formation, Nickel surfaces are irradiated with femtosecond laser pulses of polarisation perpendicular or parallel to the orientation of the pre-pattern ridges. Experimental results indicate that for polarisation parallel to the ridges, laser induced periodic surface structures (…
