By a classical result of Neukirch and Uchida, a number field K is determined by the structure of its absolute Galois group Gal(K). We show that K is not determined by the structure of the Sylow subgroups of Gal(K), answering a question raised by Florian Pop.
In this paper we consider linear relations with conjugates of a Salem number $α$. We show that every such a relation arises from a linear relation between conjugates of the corresponding totally real algebraic integer $α+1/α$. It is also shown that the smallest degree of a Salem number with a nontrivial relation between its conjugates is $8$, whereas the smallest length of a nontrivial linear relation between the conjugates of a Salem number is $6$.
In this paper we investigate the Galois conjugates of a Pisot number $q \in (m, m+1)$, $m \geq 1$. In particular, we conjecture that for $q \in (1,2)$ we have $|q'| \geq \frac{\sqrt{5}-1}{2}$ for all conjugates $q'$ of $q$. Further, for $m \geq 3$, we conjecture that for all Pisot numbers $q \in (m, m+1)$ we have $|q'| \geq \frac{m+1-\sqrt{m^2+2m-3}}{2}$. A similar conjecture if made for $m =2$. We conjecture that all of these bounds are tight. We provide partial supporting evidence for this conjecture. This evidence is both of a theoretical and computational nature. Lastly, we connect this co…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ which has multiplicative reduction at a fixed prime $p$. For each positive integer $n$ we put $K_n:=\mathbb{Q}(E[p^n])$. The aim of this paper is to extend the author's previous our results concerning with the order of the $p$-Sylow group of the ideal class group of $K_n$ to more general setting. We also modify the previous lower bound of the order and describe the new lower bound in terms of the Mordell-Weil rank of $E(\mathbb{Q})$ and the ramification related to $E$.
In this work, we analyze the behavior of the self-conjugate 6-core partition numbers $sc_{6}(n)$ by utilizing the theory of quadratic and modular forms. In particular, we explore when $sc_{6}(n) > 0$. Positivity of $sc_{t}(n)$ has been studied in the past, with some affirmative results when $t > 7$. The case $t = 6$ was analyzed by Hanusa and Nath, who conjectured that $sc_{6}(n) > 0$ except when $n \in \{2, 12, 13, 73\}$. This inspires a theorem of Alpoge, which uses deep results from Duke and Schulze-Pillot to show that $sc_{6}(n) > 0$ for $n \gg 1$ using representation numbers of a particul…
We give a bijection between the set of self-conjugate partitions and that of ordinary partitions. Also, we show the relation between hook lengths of self conjugate partition and corresponding partition via the bijection. As a corollary, we give new combinatorial interpretations for the Catalan number and the Motzkin number in terms of self-conjugate simultaneous core partitions.
We extend recent results of Ono and Raji, relating the number of self-conjugate $7$-core partitions to Hurwitz class numbers. Furthermore, we give a combinatorial explanation for the curious equality $2\operatorname{sc}_7(8n+1) = \operatorname{c}_4(7n+2)$. We also conjecture that an equality of this shape holds if and only if $t=4$, proving the cases $t\in\{2,3,5\}$ and giving partial results for $t>5$.
We investigate $sc_7(n)$, the number of self-conjugate $7$-core partitions of size $n$. It turns out that $sc_7(n)=0$ for $n\equiv 7\pmod 8$. For $n\equiv 1, 3, 5\pmod 8$, with $n\not \equiv 5\pmod 7,$ we find that $sc_7(n)$ is essentially a Hurwitz class number. Using recent work of Gao and Qin, we show that $$ sc_7(n) = 2^{-\varepsilon(n)-1}\cdot H(-D_n), $$ where $-D_n:=-4^{\varepsilon(n)}(7n+14)$ and $\varepsilon(n):=\frac{1}{2}\cdot(1+(-1)^{\frac{n-1}{2}})$. This fact implies several corollaries which are of interest. For example, if $-D_n$ is a fundamental discriminant and $p\not \in \{2…
Let $G$ be a linear algebraic group over a field $k$ of characteristic 0. We show that any two connected semisimple $k$-subgroups of $G$ that are conjugate over an algebraic closure of $k$ are actually conjugate over a finite field extension of $k$ of degree bounded independently of the subgroups. Moreover, if $k$ is a real number field, we show that any two connected semisimple $k$-subgroups of $G$ that are conjugate over the field of real numbers $\mathbb{R}$ are actually conjugate over a finite real extension of $k$ of degree bounded independently of the subgroups.
The number of conjugate classes of derangements of order $n$ is the same as the number $h(n)$ of the restricted partitions with every portion greater than $1$. It is also equal to the number of isotopy classes of $2\times n$ Latin rectangles. Sometimes the exact value is necessary, while sometimes we need the approximation value. In this paper, a recursion formula of $h(n)$ will be obtained, also will some elementary approximation formulae with high accuracy for $h(n)$ be presented. Although we may obtain the value of $h(n)$ in some computer algebra system, it is still meaningful to find an ef…
