In a recent letter, we developed a novel Euclidean time approach to compute Rényi entanglement entropy on lattices and fuzzy spaces based on Green's function. The present work is devoted in part to the explicit proof of the Green's matrix function formula which was quoted and used in the previous letter, and on the other part to some applications of this formalism. We focus on scalar theory on 1+1 lattice. We also use the developed approach to go systematically beyond the Gaussian case by considering interacting models, in particular our results confirm earlier expectations concerning the correction to the entanglement at first order. We finally outline how this approach can be used to compute the entanglement entropy on fuzzy spaces for free and interacting scalar theories.
We develop a Green's function approach to compute Rényi entanglement entropy on lattices and fuzzy spaces. The Rényi entropy resulting from tracing out an arbitrary collection of subsets of coupled harmonic oscillators is written as zero temperature partition function generated by an Euclidean action with $n$-fold step potential. The associated Green's function is explicitly constructed and an alternative new formula for the Rényi entropy is obtained. Finally it is outlined how this approach can be used to go beyond the gaussian state and include interaction by writing a perturbative expansion…
We study the entanglement entropy of a scalar filed in 2+1 spacetime where space is modeled by a fuzzy sphere and a fuzzy disc. In both models we evaluate numerically the resulting entropies and find that they are proportional to the number of boundary degrees of freedom. In the Moyal plan limit of the fuzzy disc the entanglement entropy per unit area (length) diverges if the ignored region is of infinite size. The divergence is (interpreted) of IR-UV mixing origin. In general we expect the entanglement entropy per unit area to be finite on a non-commutative space if the ignored region is of f…
We locate the relevant degrees of freedom for the entanglement entropy on some 2+1 fuzzy models. It is found that the entropy is stored in the near boundary degrees of freedom. We give a simple analytical derivation for the area law using $1/N$ like expansion when only the near boundary degrees of freedom are incorporated. Numerical and qualitative evidences for the validity of near boundary approximation are finally given .
This paper is devoted to an investigation of Euclidean wormholes made by fuzzy instantons. We investigate the Euclidean path integral in anti-de Sitter space. In Einstein gravity, we introduce a scalar field with a potential. Because of the analyticity, there is a contribution of complex-valued instantons, so-called fuzzy instantons. If we have a massless scalar field, then we obtain Euclidean wormholes, where the probabilities become smaller and smaller as the size of the throat becomes larger and larger. If we introduce a non-trivial potential, then in order to obtain a non-zero tunneling ra…
A dynamical fuzzy space might be described in terms of a dynamical three-index variable C_{ab}^c, which determines the algebraic relations f_a f_b =C_{ab}^c f_c of the functions f_a on a fuzzy space. A fuzzy analogue of the general coordinate transformation would be given by the general linear transformation on f_a. The solutions to the invariant equations of motion of C_{ab}^c can be generally constructed from the invariant tensors of Lie groups. Euclidean models the actions of which are bounded from below are introduced. Lie group symmetric solutions to a class of Euclidean model are obtaine…
We study entanglement entropy on the fuzzy sphere. We calculate it in a scalar field theory on the fuzzy sphere, which is given by a matrix model. We use a method that is based on the replica method and applicable to interacting fields as well as free fields. For free fields, we obtain the results consistent with the previous study, which serves as a test of the validity of the method. For interacting fields, we perform Monte Carlo simulations at strong coupling and see a novel behavior of entanglement entropy.
The Euclidean path integral is well approximated by instantons. If instantons are dynamical, then instantons are necessarily complexified. These fuzzy instantons can have various physical applications. In slow-roll inflation models, fuzzy instantons can explain the probability distribution of the initial conditions of the universe. Even though the potential shape does not satisfy the slow-roll conditions following the swampland criteria, still the fuzzy instantons can explain the origin of the universe. If we extend the Euclidean path integral beyond the no-boundary proposal, we may study fuzz…
We consider defining a fuzzy space by a specific state in a fermionic field theory in terms of which all the observables for the space can be evaluated. This allows for a definition of entanglement for a fuzzy space by direct integration of the fields over a certain region. Even though the resulting formula for the entanglement entropy (EE) is similar to what has been used in the quantum Hall effect, our derivation provides a novel perspective. We also review and strengthen the arguments for the EE to be described by a generalized Chern-Simons form.
In this paper, we investigate complex-valued Euclidean wormholes in the Starobinsky inflation. Due to the properties of the concave inflaton potential, the classicality condition at both ends of the wormhole can be satisfied, as long as the initial condition of the inflaton field is such that it is located sufficiently close to the hilltop. We compare the probabilities of classicalized wormholes with the Hartle-Hawking compact instantons and conclude that the Euclidean wormholes are probabilistically preferred than compact instantons, if the inflation lasts more than 50 e-foldings. Our result …
We introduce a UV cutoff into free scalar field theory on the noncommutative (fuzzy) two-sphere. Due to the IR-UV connection, varying the UV cutoff allows us to control the effective nonlocality scale of the theory. In the resulting fuzzy geometry, we establish which degrees of freedom lie within a specific geometric subregion and compute the associated vacuum entanglement entropy. Entanglement entropy for regions smaller than the effective nonlocality scale is extensive, while entanglement entropy for regions larger than the effective nonlocality scale follows the area law. This reproduces fe…
We numerically study the behaviour of entanglement entropy for a free scalar field on the noncommutative ("fuzzy") sphere after a mass quench. It is known that the entanglement entropy before a quench violates the usual area law due to the non-local nature of the theory. By comparing our results to the ordinary sphere, we find results that, despite this non-locality, are compatible with entanglement being spread by ballistic propagation of entangled quasi-particles at a speed no greater than the speed of light. However, we also find that, when the pre-quench mass is much larger than the invers…
We investigate Euclidean wormholes in Einstein gravity with a massless scalar field in de Sitter space. Euclidean wormholes are possible due to the analytic continuation of the time as well as complexification of fields, where we need to impose the classicality after the Wick-rotation to the Lorentzian signatures. For some parameters, wormholes are preferred than Hawking-Moss instantons, and hence wormholes can be more fundamental than Hawking-Moss type instantons. Euclidean wormholes can be interpreted in three ways: (1) classical big bounce, (2) either tunneling from a small to a large unive…
We investigate entanglement entropy in a scalar field theory on the fuzzy sphere. The theory is realized by a matrix model. In our previous study, we confirmed that entanglement entropy in the free case is proportional to the square of the boundary area of a focused region. Here we argue that this behavior of entanglement entropy can be understood by the fact that the theory is regularized by matrices, and further examine the dependence of entanglement entropy on the matrix size. In the interacting case, by performing Monte Carlo simulations, we observe a transition from a generalized volume l…
In this talk I discuss some features of the entanglement entropy for fuzzy geometry, focusing on its dependence on the background fields and the spin connection of the emergent continuous manifold in a large $N$ limit. Using the Landau-Hall paradigm for fuzzy geometry, this is argued to be given by a generalized Chern-Simons form, making a point of connection with the thermodynamic view of gravity. Matter-gravity couplings are also considered in the same framework; they naturally lead to certain specific nonminimal couplings involving powers of the curvature.
We obtain entanglement entropy on the noncommutative (fuzzy) two-sphere. To define a subregion with a well defined boundary in this geometry, we use the symbol map between elements of the noncommutative algebra and functions on the sphere. We find that entanglement entropy is not proportional to the length of the region's boundary. Rather, in agreement with holographic predictions, it is extensive for regions whose area is a small (but fixed) fraction of the total area of the sphere. This is true even in the limit of small noncommutativity. We also find that entanglement entropy grows linearly…
Quantum field theory defined on a noncommutative space is a useful toy model of quantum gravity and is known to have several intriguing properties, such as nonlocality and UV/IR mixing. They suggest novel types of correlation among the degrees of freedom of different energy scales. In this paper, we investigate such correlations by the use of entanglement entropy in the momentum space. We explicitly evaluate the entanglement entropy of scalar field theory on a fuzzy sphere and find that it exhibits different behaviors from that on the usual continuous sphere. We argue that these differences wo…
We numerically calculate entanglement entropy and mutual information for a massive free scalar field on commutative (ordinary) and noncommutative (fuzzy) spheres. We regularize the theory on the commutative geometry by discretizing the polar coordinate, whereas the theory on the noncommutative geometry naturally posseses a finite and adjustable number of degrees of freedom. Our results show that the UV-divergent part of the entanglement entropy on a fuzzy sphere does not follow an area law, while the entanglement entropy on a commutative sphere does. Nonetheless, we find that mutual informatio…
The noncommutative extension of a dynamical 2-dimensional space-time is given and some of its properties discussed. Wick rotation to euclidean signature yields a surface which has as commutative limit the doughnut but in a singular limit in which the radius of the hole tends to zero.
To understand the information loss paradox in a consistent way, we provide a brief big picture that describes both outside and inside a black hole. We summary several ideas including the Euclidean path integral, the entanglement entropy, and the quantum gravitational treatment for the singularity. This integrated discussion can provide an alternative point of view toward the ultimate resolution of the information loss paradox.
We present a quantum geometric framework for stochastic quantisation in the case of a free Klein-Gordon field on Euclidean space. In this approach the noise is part of the background space, spacetime is fuzzy. We extend the notion of sharp point limit and show how fuzzy spacetime and the Klein-Gordon field gives the Euclidean space and the stochastically quantised Klein-Gordon field respectively.
In this letter we show that the noncommutative spaces, and in particular fuzzy spheres, are natural candidates which explicitly exhibit the holography, by noting that the smallest physically accessible volume is much larger that the expected Planckian size. Moreover, we show that fuzzy spheres provide us with a new approach, ''an $N$-tropic'' approach, to the cosmological constant problem, though in a Euclidean space-time.
We previously proposed that entanglement across a planar surface can be obtained from the partition function on a Euclidean hourglass geometry. Here we extend the prescription to spherical entangling surfaces in conformal field theory. We use the prescription to evaluate log terms in the entropy of a CFT in two dimensions, a conformally-coupled scalar in four dimensions, and a Maxwell field in four dimensions. For Maxwell we reproduce the extractable entropy obtained by Soni and Trivedi. We take this as evidence that the hourglass prescription provides a Euclidean technique for evaluating extr…
We explore a new way to simulate quantum field theory, without introducing a spatial lattice. As a pilot study we apply this method to the 3d λϕ^4 model. The regularisation consists of a fuzzy sphere with radius R for the two spatial directions, plus a discrete Euclidean time. The fuzzy sphere approximates the algebra of functions of the sphere with a matrix algebra, and the scalar field is represented by a Hermitian N x N matrix at each time site. We evaluate the phase diagram, where we find a disordered phase and an ordered regime, which splits into phases of uniform and non-uniform order. W…
We present a new framework for defining fuzzy approximations to geometry in terms of a cutoff on the spectrum of the Dirac operator, and a generalization of it that we call the Dirac-Flux operator. This framework does not require a symplectic form on the manifold, and is completely rotation invariant on an arbitrary n-sphere. The framework is motivated by the formalism of Holographic Space-Time (HST), whose fundamental variables are sections of the spinor bundle over a compact Euclidean manifold. The strong holographic principle (SHP) requires the space of these sections to be finite dimension…
We give a simplified formula for the star product on CP^n_L, which enables us to define a twist element suited for discussing a Drinfeld twist like structure on fuzzy complex projective spaces. The existence of such a twist will have several consequences for field theories on fuzzy spaces, some of which we discuss in the present paper. As expected, we find that the twist of the coproduct is trivial for the generators of isometries on CP^n_L. Furthermore, the twist allows us to define a covariant tensor calculus on CP^n_L from the perspective of the standard embedding of CP^n in flat Euclidean …
We consider entanglement across a planar boundary in flat space. Entanglement entropy is usually thought of as the von Neumann entropy of a reduced density matrix, but it can also be thought of as half the von Neumann entropy of a product of reduced density matrices on the left and right. The latter form allows a natural regulator in which two cones are smoothed into a Euclidean hourglass geometry. Since there is no need to tensor-factor the Hilbert space, the regulated entropy is manifestly gauge-invariant and has a manifest state-counting interpretation. We explore this prescription for scal…
We calculate the topological entanglement entropy (TEE) in Euclidean asymptotic AdS3 spacetime using surgery. The treatment is intrinsically three-dimensional. In the BTZ black hole background, several different bipartitions are applied. For the bipartition along the horizon between two single-sided black holes, TEE is exactly the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, which supports the ER=EPR conjecture in the Euclidean case. For other bipartitions, we derive an Entangling-Thermal relation for each single-sided black hole, which is of topological origin. After summing over genus-one classical geometrie…
We study the effect of a bubble wall on the entanglement entropy of a free massive scalar field between two causally disconnected open charts in de Sitter space. We assume there is a delta-functional wall between the open charts. This can be thought of as a model of pair creation of bubble universes in de Sitter space. We first derive the Euclidean vacuum mode functions of the scalar field in the presence of the wall in the coordinates that respect the open charts. We then derive the Bogoliubov transformation between the Euclidean vacuum and the open chart vacua that makes the reduced density …
We examine the deSitter entropy in the braneworld model with the Gauss-Bonnet/Lovelock terms. Then, we can see that the deSitter entropy computed through the Euclidean action exactly coincides with the holographic entanglement entropy.
We study dynamics of a membrane and its matrix regularisation. We present the matrix regularisation for a membrane propagating in a curved space-time geometry in the presence of an arbitrary 3-form field. In the matrix regularisation, we then study the dynamics of D-particles. We show how the Riemann curvature of the target space-time geometry, or any other form fields can polarise the D-Particles, cause entanglement among them and create fuzzy solutions. We review the fuzzy sphere and we present fuzzy hyperbolic and ellipsoid solutions.
In this paper, I study the entanglement entropy in Hartle-Hawking states of JT gravity set up by a Euclidean path integral with an operator inserted somewhere along the Euclidean boundary. I show that the entanglement entropy between the dual SYK models can be written to leading order in $1/G_N$ in a way that resembles a formula for entanglement entropy in a compact lattice gauge theory, but where the link that we appear to compute the entanglement across depends on where we put the operator along the Euclidean boundary. I then describe a toy model where we can write down an explicit family of…
This thesis is devoted to the study of Quantum Field Theories (QFT) on fuzzy spaces. Fuzzy spaces are approximations to the algebra of functions of a continuous space by a finite matrix algebra. In the limit of infinitely large matrices the formulation is exact. An attractive feature of this approach is that it transparently shows how the geometrical properties of the continuous space are preserved. In the study of the non-perturbative regime of QFT, fuzzy spaces provide a possible alternative to the lattice as a regularisation method. The thesis is divided into two parts. We perform Monte Car…
We construct various systems of coherent states (SCS) on the $O(D)$-equivariant fuzzy spheres $S^d_Λ$ ($d=1,2$, $D=d\!+\!1$) constructed in [G. Fiore, F. Pisacane, J. Geom. Phys. 132 (2018), 423-451] and study their localizations in configuration space as well as angular momentum space. These localizations are best expressed through the $O(D)$-invariant square space and angular momentum uncertainties $(Δ\boldsymbol{x})^2,(Δ\boldsymbol{L})^2$ in the ambient Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^D$. We also determine general bounds (e.g. uncertainty relations from commutation relations) for $(Δ\boldsymbol…
The Ryu-Takayanagi and covariant Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi proposals relate entanglement entropy in CFTs with holographic duals to the areas of minimal or extremal surfaces in the bulk geometry. We show how, in three dimensional pure gravity, the relevant regulated geodesic lengths can be obtained by writing a spacetime as a quotient of AdS3, with the problem reduced to a simple purely algebraic calculation. We explain how this works in both Lorentzian and Euclidean formalisms, before illustrating its use to obtain novel results in a number of examples, including rotating BTZ, the RP2 geon, …
We study the holographic representation of the entanglement entropy, recently proposed by Ryu and Takayanagi, in a braneworld context. The holographic entanglement entropy of a de Sitter brane embedded in an anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime is evaluated using geometric quantities, and it is compared with two kinds of de Sitter entropy: a quarter of the area of the cosmological horizon on the brane and entropy calculated from the Euclidean path integral. We show that the three entropies coincide with each other in a certain limit. Remarkably, the entropy obtained from the Euclidean path integral …
We compute the entanglement entropy and Renyi entropies of arbitrary pure states in pure Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity in Lorentz signature. We apply the quantum Hubeny-Rangamani-Ryu-Takayanagi formula by computing the quantum corrected area term and the bulk entropy term. The sum of these two terms for the Hartle-Hawking state agrees with the black hole entropy above extremality computed from the Euclidean disk path integral. We interpret the area term as the universal contribution of a defect operator that plays a crucial role in our Lorentzian interpretation of the Euclidean replica trick in gr…
In this paper, we analyze the holographic covariant entanglement entropy in the double Wick rotated version of a rotating BTZ black hole (3 dimensional Kerr-AdS solution), where the periodicity of Euclidean time and spatial direction are changed. The dual field theory has negative energy in the Lorentzian signature. The holographic entanglement entropy agrees with its CFT counterpart, which is obtained by a conformal transformation of the correlation functions of twisted operators.
In this review we first introduce the general methods to calculate the entanglement entropy for free fields, within the Euclidean and the real time formalisms. Then we describe the particular examples which have been worked out explicitly in two, three and more dimensions.
We evaluate the entanglement entropy of a non-minimal coupling Einstein-scalar theory with two approaches in classical Euclidean gravity. By analysing the equation of motion, we find that the entangled surface is restricted to be a minimal surface. The entanglement entropy formula is derived directly from the approach of regularized conical singularity. On the other hand, by expressing Ricci scalar of the conical spacetime, we obtain the same result. In addition, we generalize the reduced geometric approach to Riemann tensor and its derivations.

We investigate the geometric characterization of pure state bipartite entanglement of $(2\times{D})$- and $(3\times{D})$-dimensional composite quantum systems. To this aim, we analyze the relationship between states and their images under the action of particular classes of local unitary operations. We find that invariance of states under the action of single-qubit and single-qutrit transformations is a necessary and sufficient condition for separability. We demonstrate that in the $(2\times{D})$-dimensional case the von Neumann entropy of entanglement is a monotonic function of the minimum sq…
The coefficient of the log term in the entanglement entropy associated with hyperspherical surfaces in flat space-time is shown to equal the conformal anomaly by conformally transforming Euclideanised space--time to a sphere and using already existing formulae for the relevant heat--kernel coefficients after cyclic factoring. The analytical reason for the result is that the conformal anomaly on the lune has an extremum at the ordinary sphere limit. A proof is given. Agreement with a recent evaluation of the coefficient is found.
In this paper it is presented the model of a multiverse made up of entangled pairs of universes. The arrow of time obtained from the principles of thermodynamics and the arrow of time given by the thermodynamics of entanglement for single universes are analyzed. The latter requires that the single universes expand once they have crossed the quantum barrier at the Euclidean regime. The possible relationship with respect to the grow of local structures in a single universe is also discussed.
We consider the fuzzy 4-sphere $S_N^4$ as a background in the IKKT matrix model and explore the relation between $S_N^4$ and fuzzy twistor space in the semi-classical limit. A novel description for the IKKT-matrix model in terms of spinorial indices is given, which is reminiscent of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-symmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) in $4d$. On fuzzy twistor space, the interactions of the IKKT model are of gravitational type. The higher-spin (HS) gauge theory emerging in this limit from the IKKT model, denoted as HS-IKKT, on fuzzy twistor space is shown to be a higher-spin extension of $\mathcal…
From the perspective of AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the gravitational Chern-Simons term correction to the holographic entanglement entropy of CFT on the conformal boundary of asymptotically AdS$_3$ spacetime using the off-shell Euclidean path integral method. We show that, like the BTZ black hole entropy, the holographic entanglement entropy is indeed modified due to the gravitational Chern-Simons term although the bulk geometry does not change.
The information loss paradox remains unresolved ever since Hawking's seminal discovery of black hole evaporation. In this essay, we revisit the entanglement entropy via Euclidean path integral (EPI) and allow for the branching of semi-classical histories during the Lorentzian evolution. We posit that there exist two histories that contribute to EPI, where one is information-losing that dominates at early times, while the other is information-preserving that dominates at late times. By so doing we recover the Page curve and preserve the unitarity, albeit with the Page time shifted significantly…
We consider entanglement entropy in the context of gauge/gravity duality for conformal field theories in even dimensions. The holographic prescription due to Ryu and Takayanagi (RT) leads to an equation describing how the entangling surface extends into the bulk geometry. We show that setting to zero the time-time component of the Brown-York stress tensor evaluated on the co-dimension one entangling surface, leads to the same equation. By considering a spherical entangling surface as an example, we observe that Euclidean action methods in AdS/CFT will lead to the RT area functional arising as …
With an aim towards understanding the time-dependence of entanglement entropy in generic quantum field theories, we propose a covariant generalization of the holographic entanglement entropy proposal of hep-th/0603001. Apart from providing several examples of possible covariant generalizations, we study a particular construction based on light-sheets, motivated in similar spirit to the covariant entropy bound underlying the holographic principle. In particular, we argue that the entanglement entropy associated with a specified region on the boundary in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence…
We consider the entanglement entropy in the dS/CFT correspondence. In Einstein gravity on de Sitter spacetime we propose the holographic entanglement entropy as the analytic continuation of the extremal surface in Euclidean anti-de Sitter spacetime.Even though dual conformal field theories for Einstein gravity on de Sitter spacetime have not been known yet,we analyzed the free $Sp(N)$ model dual to Vasiliev's higher spin gauge theory as a toy model. In this model we confirmed the behaviour similar to our holographic result from Einstein gravity.
The AdS/CFT correspondence relates quantum entanglement between boundary Conformal Field Theories and geometric connections in the dual asymptotically Anti-de Sitter space-time. We consider entangled states in the n-fold tensor product of a 1+1 dimensional CFT Hilbert space defined by the Euclidean path integral over a Riemann surface with n holes. In one region of moduli space, the dual bulk state is a black hole with n asymptotically AdS_3 regions connected by a common wormhole, while in other regions the bulk fragments into disconnected components. We study the entanglement structure and co…
