Engineering oxygen octahedra rotation patterns in $ABO_3$ perovskites is a powerful route to design functional materials. Here we propose a strategy that exploits point defects that create local electric dipoles and couple to the oxygen sublattice, enabling direct actuation on the rotational degrees of freedom. This approach, which relies on substituting an $A$ site with a smaller ion, paves a way to couple dynamically octahedra rotations to external electric fields. A common antisite defect, $\mathrm{Al_{La}}$ in rhombohedral LaAlO$_3$ is taken as a prototype to validate the idea, with atomistic density functional theory calculations supported with an effective lattice model to simulate the dynamics of switching of the local rotational degrees of freedom to long distances. Our simulations provide an insight of the main parameters that govern the operation of the proposed mechanism, and allow to define guidelines for screening other systems where this approach could be used for tuning the properties of the host material.
Oxygen octahedral distortions including tilts/rotations, deformations and off-centering in (layered) perovskites play the key role in their numerous functional properties. At the polar-centrosymmetric phase boundary in bi-layered perovskite Ca3-xSrxTi2O7 with x~1, we found the presence of abundant topological Z8 vortex-antivortex pairs, associated with four oxygen octahedral tilts at domains and another four different oxygen octahedral tilts at domain boundaries. Our discovery opens a new revenue to unveil topological defects associated with various types of oxygen octahedral distortions.
We perform first-principles density functional calculations to explore the role of substrate proximity effects on the octahedral rotation patterns in perovskite oxide superlattices. With cubic perovskite SrFeO$_3$ as our model film and tetragonal SrTiO$_3$ as the substrate, we show that in most cases the substrate octahedral rotation patterns propagate into the film across the heterointerface. We also identify elastic boundary conditions for which the enforced structural coherence induces atomic displacement patterns that are not found in the bulk phase diagram of either individual constituent…
Instabilities relating to cooperative octahedral tilting is common in materials with perovskite structures, and in particular in the sub class of halide perovskites. In this work, the energetics of octahedral tilting in the inorganic metal halide perovskites CsPbI$_3$ and CsSnI$_3$ are investigated using first-principles density functional theory calculations. Several low energy paths between symmetry equivalent variants of the stable orthorhombic (\textit{Pnma}) perovskite variant are identified and investigated. The results are in favor of the presence of dynamic disorder in the octahedral t…
Ruddelsden-Popper halide perovskites are highly versatile quasi-two-dimensional energy materials with a wide range of tunable optoelectronic properties. Here we use the all-inorganic Cs$_{n+1}$Pb$_n$X$_{3n+1}$ Ruddelsden-Popper perovskites with X=I, Br, and Cl to systematically model the effect of octahedral tilting distortions on the energy landscape, band gaps, macroscopic polarization, and the emergence of Rashba-/Dresselhaus splitting in these materials. We construct all unique $n=1$ and $n=2$ structures following from octahedral tilts and use first-principles density functional theory to …
NiO6-octahedral tilts in ultrathin LaNiO3 films were studied using position averaged convergent beam electron diffraction (PACBED) in scanning transmission electron microscopy. Both the type and magnitude of the octahedral tilts were determined by comparing PACBED experiments to frozen phonon multislice simulations. It is shown that the out-of-plane octahedral tilt of an epitaxial film under biaxial tensile stress (0.78 % in-plane tensile strain) increases by ~ 20%, while the in-plane rotation decreases by ~ 80%, compared to the unstrained bulk material.
Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, we discover an anomalously large bi-axial strain-induced octahedral rotation axis reorientation in orthorhombic perovskites with tendency towards rhombohedral symmetry. The transition between crystallographically equivalent (isosymmetric) structures with different octahedral rotation magnitudes originates from strong strain--octahedral rotation coupling available to perovskites and the energetic hierarchy among competing octahedral tilt patterns. By elucidating these criteria, we suggest many functional perovskites would exhibit th…
Two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectricity has attracted extensive attention since its discovery in the monolayers of van der Waals materials. Here we show that 2D ferroelectricity induced by octahedral rotation distortion is widely present in the perovskite bilayer system through first-principles calculations. The perovskite tolerance factor plays a crucial role in the lattice dynamics and ground-state structure of the perovskite monolayers and bilayers, thus providing an important indicator for screening this hybrid improper ferroelectricity. Generally, the ferroelectric switching via an orthorho…
High-temperature phase behavior in the system LixNa1-xNbO3 has been studied by using high-resolution powder neutron diffraction. Each of the three compositions studied in the Na-rich part of the phase diagram (x = 0.03, 0.08 and 0.12) shows evidence for distinct and complex structural modulations based on different tilting schemes of NbO6 octahedral units. Whilst octahedral tilting is prevalent in the structural chemistry of perovskites the nature of complexity of the phases observed here is unprecedented. Neither of the long-range tilt phases observed in NaNbO3 itself occurs here; instead a n…
Nuclear site analysis methods are used to enumerate the normal modes of $ABX_{3}$ perovskite polymorphs with octahedral rotations. We provide the modes of the fourteen subgroups of the cubic aristotype describing the Glazer octahedral tilt patterns, which are obtained from rotations of the $BX_{6}$ octahedra with different sense and amplitude about high symmetry axes. We tabulate all normal modes of each tilt system and specify the contribution of each atomic species to the mode displacement pattern, elucidating the physical meaning of the symmetry unique modes. We have systematically generate…
The structure of ABO3 perovskites is dominated by two types of unstable modes, namely, the oxygen octahedral rotation (AFD) and ferroelectric (FE) mode. It is generally believed that such AFD and FE modes tend to compete and suppress each other. Here we use first-principles methods to show that a dual nature of the AFD-FE coupling, which turns from competitive to cooperative as the AFD mode strengthens, occurs in numerous perovskite oxides. We provide a unified model of such a dual interaction by introducing novel high-order coupling terms, and explain the atomistic origin of the resulting new…
We investigate the structure--property relationships in $AB$O$_3$ perovskites exhibiting octahedral rotations and cooperative octahedral breathing distortions (CBD) using group theoretical methods. Rotations of octahedra are ubiquitous in the perovskite family, while the appearance of breathing distortions -- oxygen displacement patterns that lead to approximately uniform dilation and contraction of the $B$O$_6$ octahedra -- are rarer in compositions with a single, chemically unique $B$-site. The presence of a CBD relies on electronic instabilities of the $B$-site cations, either orbital degen…
We present a systematic first-principles study of the structural and vibrational properties of perovskite-structure EuTiO3. Our calculated phonon spectrum of the high-symmetry cubic structural prototype shows strong M- and R-point instabilities, indicating a tendency to symmetry-lowering structural deformations composed of rotations and tilts of the oxygen octahedra. Subsequent explicit study of 14 different octahedral tilt-patterns showed that the I4/mcm, Imma, and R\bar{3}c structures, all with antiferrodistortive rotations of the octahedra, have significantly lower total energy than the pro…
Increasing demands for electric field-tunable electric, magnetic, and orbital (EMO) materials has renewed interests in ferroelectricity and its coupling to EMO properties in complex perovskite oxides. The historic design strategy to achieve a spontaneous polarization involves the incorporation of second-order Jahn-Teller (SOJT) active cations. The challenge, however, is that this mechanism is limited to specific chemistries and the polar distortions that arise are largely decoupled from EMO properties, limiting their use as field-tunable multifunctional technology materials. Here we report the…
A mathematical framework is developed to describe tilted perovskites using a tensor description of octahedral deformations. The continuity of octahedral tilts through the crystal is described using an operator which relates the deformations of adjacent octahedra; examination of the properties of this operator upon application of symmetry elements allows the space group of tilted perovskites to be obtained. It is shown that the condition of octahedral continuity across a planar defect such as an anti-phase boundary or domain wall necessarily leads to different octahedral tilting at the defect, …
The rotation of octahedra (octahedral tilting) is common in ABO3 perovskites and relevant to many physical phenomena, ranging from electronic and magnetic properties, metal-insulator transitions to improper ferroelectricity. Hydrostatic pressure is an efficient way to tune and control octahedral tiltings. However, the pressure behavior of such tiltings can dramatically differ from one material to another, with the origins of such differences remaining controversial. In this work, we discover several new mechanisms and formulate a set of simple rules that allow to understand how pressure affect…
This work presents the most detailed and extensive theoretical study to date of the structural configurations of Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phases in antiferrodistortive (AFD) perovskites and formulates a program of study which can be pursued for RP phases of any AFD perovskite system. We systematically investigate the effects of oxygen octahedral rotations on the energies of RP phases in AFD perovskites (A_n+1 B_n O_3n+1) for n = 1...30, providing asymptotic results for n --> infinity that give both the form of the interaction between stacking faults and the behavior of such stacking faults in is…
The local crystal structures of many perovskite-structured materials deviate from the average space group symmetry. We demonstrate, from lattice-dynamics calculations based on quantum chemical force constants, that all the caesium-lead and caesium-tin halide perovskites exhibit vibrational instabilities associated with octahedral titling in their high-temperature cubic phase. Anharmonic double-well potentials are found for zone-boundary phonon modes in all compounds with barriers ranging from 108 to 512 meV. The well depth is correlated with the tolerance factor and the chemistry of the compos…
Structural disorder is common in metal-halide perovskites and important for understanding the functional properties of these materials. First-principles methods can address structure variation on the atomistic scale, but they are often limited by the lack of structure-sampling schemes required to characterize the disorder. In this work, structural disorder in the benchmark inorganic halide perovskites CsPbI$_3^{}$ and CsPbBr$_3^{}$ is computationally studied in terms of the three octahedral-tilting angles. The consequent variation in energetics and properties are described by three-dimensional…
Interface engineering in perovskite oxide superlattices has developed into a flourishing field, enabling not only further tuning of the exceptional properties, but also giving access to emergent physical phenomena. Here, we reveal a new mechanism for enhancing the electric polarization by the interface-induced oxygen octahedral tilts in BaTiO3/CaTiO3 superlattices. By combining a novel genetic algorithm with density functional theory (DFT), we predict that the true ground states in 1:1 and 2:2 BaTiO3/CaTiO3 superlattices grown on SrTiO3 adopt Pc symmetry with a large proper electric polarizati…
We introduce columnar shifts---collective rigid-body translations---as a structural degree of freedom relevant to the phase behaviour of molecular perovskites ABX$_{\textrm3}$ (X = molecular anion). Like the well-known octahedral tilts of conventional perovskites, shifts also preserve the octahedral coordination geometry of the B-site cation in molecular perovskites, and so are predisposed to influencing the low-energy dynamics and displacive phase transitions of these topical systems. We present a qualitative overview of the interplay between shift activation and crystal symmetry breaking, an…
Structural modelling of octahedral tilts in perovskites is typically done using the symmetry constraints of the resulting space group. In most cases, this introduces more degrees of freedom than those strictly necessary to describe only the octahedral tilts. It can therefore be a challenge to disentangle the octahedral tilts from other structural distortions such as cation displacements and octahedral distortions. This paper reports on the development of constraints for modelling pure octahedral tilts and implemented the constraints in diffpy-CMI, a powerful package to analyse pair distributio…
Naturals and synthetic perovskites are widely used functional materials thanks to their particular physical properties, such as superconductivity, ferroelectricity and photo-activity. Many of these properties are related to static or dynamic motion of octahedral units; Yet a full understanding of the relationships between perovskite crystal structure, chemical bonding and physical properties is currently missing. Several studies indicate the existence of dynamic disorder generated by anharmonic motion of octahedral units e.g. in halide perovskite structures. In this work, we derive all possibl…
With increasing temperature, ${\rm Sr}_2{\rm ScSbO}_6$ undergoes three structural phase transitions at approximately ${\rm 400K}$, ${\rm 560K}$ and ${\rm 650K}$, leading to the following sequence of phases: $P2_1/n \rightarrow I2/m \rightarrow I4/m \rightarrow Fm\bar{3}m$, making it an ideal candidate to study the effects of octahedral tilting keeping other parameters fixed. To ascertain the isolated effects of octahedral distortions, the electronic and optical properties of the monoclinic $P2_1/n$ (at room temperature), monoclinic $I2/m$ (at ${\rm 430K}$), tetragonal $I4/m$ (at ${\rm 613K}$) …
Computational and Experimental Investigation of Chiral and Achiral 2D Organic Lead Bromide Perovskites: Octahedral Distortions and Electronic and Optical Properties
We present a systematic study of the effect of Y doping and hydration level on the structural transformations of BaCeO3 based on anelastic spectroscopy experiments. The temperature of the intermediate transformation between rhombohedral and orthorhombic Imma phases rises with increasing the molar fraction x of Y roughly as (500 K)x in the hydrated state, and is depressed of more than twice that amount after complete dehydration. This is explained in terms of the effect of doping on the average (Ce/Y)-O and Ba-O bond lengths, and of lattice relaxation from O vacancies. The different behavior of…
The oxygen octahedral tilted domains in 0.90(Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3-0.5(Bi1/2K1/2)TiO3-0.5BaTiO3 lead-free perovskite piezoelectric ceramic have been studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Selected-area electron diffraction patterns shows the 1/2ooo and 1/2ooe reflections, indicating the presence of antiphase (a-a-a-) and in-phase (aoaoc+) octahedral tilting, respectively. The morphology and distributions of these tilted domains are shown in the centered dark-field images. Further, the Bragg-filtered high-resolution TEM image reveals that the size of the in-phase tilted domains varies fro…
Perovskite ABO$_3$ oxides display an amazing variety of phenomena that can be altered by subtle changes in the chemistry and internal structure, making them a favorite class of materials to explore the rational design of novel properties. Here we highlight a recent advance in which rotations of the BO$_6$ octahedra give rise to a novel form of ferroelectricity -- hybrid improper ferroelectricity. Octahedral rotations also strongly influence other structural, magnetic, orbital, and electronic degrees of freedom in perovskites and related materials. Octahedral rotation-driven ferroelectricity co…
Epitaxial strain is a proven route to enhancing the properties of complex oxides, however, the details of how the atomic structure accommodates strain are poorly understood due to the difficulty of measuring the oxygen positions in thin films. We present a general methodology for determining the atomic structure of strained oxide films via x-ray diffraction, which we demonstrate using LaNiO3 films. The oxygen octahedral rotations and distortions have been quantified by comparing the intensities of half-order Bragg peaks, arising from the two unit cell periodicity of the octahedral rotations, w…
Doping ferroelectrics with carriers is often detrimental to polarization. This makes the design and discovery of metals that undergo a ferroelectric-like transition challenging. In this letter, we show from first principles that the oxygen octahedral rotations in perovskites are often enhanced by electron doping, and this can be used as a means to strengthen the structural polarization in certain hybrid-improper ferroelectrics -- compounds in which the polarization is not stabilized by the long range Coulomb interactions but is instead induced by a trilinear coupling to octahedral rotations. W…
Recently, layered hybrid perovskites have been attracting huge interest due to a wide range of possible chemical compositions and the resulting tunability of the materials properties. In this study, we investigate the effect of the chain length of the organic ligands on the optical properties of stacks of two dimensional perovskite layers consisting of alkylammonium lead iodide (CnH2n+1NH3)2PbI4 with n=4-18. Photoluminescence and absorption spectroscopy reveal a blueshift with increasing chain length n including a jump of 110 meV between the n=10 and n=12 ligands due to a change in octahedral …
Rotation of MO6 (M = transition metal) octahedra is a key determinant of the physical properties of perovskite materials. Therefore, tuning physical properties, one of the most important goals in condensed matter research, may be accomplished by controlling octahedral rotation (OR). In this study, it is demonstrated that OR can be driven by an electric field in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Rotated octahedra in the surface layer of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ are restored to the unrotated bulk structure upon dosing the surface with K. Theoretical investigation shows that OR in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ originates from the surface ele…
Rare earth based cobalt-ruthenium double perovskites A$_2$CoRuO$_6$ (A = La, Pr, Nd and Sm) were synthesized and investigated for their structural and magnetic properties. All the compounds crystallize in the monoclinic $P2_1/n$ structure with the indication of antisite disorder between Co and Ru sites. While, La compound is already reported to have an antiferromagnetic state below 27 K, the Pr, Nd and Sm systems are found to be ferrimagnetic below $T_c$ = 46, 55 and 78 K respectively. Field dependent magnetization data indicate prominent hysteresis loop below $T_c$ in the samples containing m…
We present a comprehensive review of the structural chemistry of hybrid lead halides of stoichiometry APbX4, A2PbX4 or AAPbX4, where A and A are organic ammonium cations and X = Cl, Br or I. These compounds may be considered as layered perovskites, containing isolated, infinite layers of corner-sharing PbX4 octahedra separated by the organic species. We first extract over 250 crystal structures from the CCDC and classify them in terms of unit cell metrics and crystal symmetry. Symmetry mode analysis is then used to identify the nature of key structural distortions of the [PbX4] layers. Two gen…
Octahedral tilting is key to the structure and functionality of perovskites. Here we show how these distortions manifest in the related Prussian blue analogues (PBAs): cyanide versions of double perovskites with formula A$_x$M[M$^{\prime}$(CN)$_6$]$_{1-y}\Box _y\cdot n$H$_2$O (A = alkali metal, M and M$^{\prime}$ = transition metals, $\Box$ = vacancy/defect). Tilts are favoured by high values of $x$ if A = Na or K, whereas the transition metals play a less important role. External hydrostatic pressure can induce tilt transitions nearly irrespective of the stoichiometry, whereas thermal transit…
Perovskites and related structures are renowned for technologically useful applications. The structural variations in perovskite crystals result in novel properties which can be regulated by external forces. The study attempts to regulate distortion of a perovskite compound LaFeO3 driven solely by reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and to demonstrate the effect using a critical parameter - electrochemical conductivity. A series of graphene concentration varied nanocomposites were synthesized via hydrothermal method. The crystal distortion is investigated using X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refineme…
Octahedral tilting is most common distortion process observed in centrosymmetric perovskite compounds (ABO$_{3}$). Indeed, crucial physical properties of this oxide stem from the tilts of BO$_{6}$ rigid octahedra. In microwave ceramics with perovskite-type structure, there is a close relation between the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency and tilt system of the perovskite structure. However, in many cases, limited access facilities are needed to assign correctly the space group, including neutron scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Here, we combine the Raman scattering …

Transition metal perovskite oxides display a variety of emergent phenomena which are tunable by tailoring the oxygen octahedral rotation. SrRuO$_3$, a ferromagnetic perovskite oxide, is well-known to have various atomic structures and octahedral rotations when grown as thin films. However, how the electronic structure changes with the film thickness has been hardly studied. Here, by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and electron diffraction techniques, we study the electronic structure of SrRuO$_3$ thin films as a function of the film thickness. Different reconstructed electronic…
We investigate the oxygen octahedral rotations that occur in two perovskites, SrTiO3 and PbTiO3, as a function of applied three-dimensional electric displacement field, allowing us to map out the phase diagram of rotations in both the paraelectric and ferroelectric regions of the polar response. First-principles calculations at fixed electric displacement field are used to extract parameters of a Landau-Devonshire model that is analyzed to identify the phase boundaries between different rotational states. The calculations reveal a rich phase diagram of rotations versus applied field in both Sr…
Ruddlesden-Popper hybrid iodide 2D perovskites are put forward as stable alternatives to their 3D counterparts. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that equilibrium concentrations of point defects in the 2D perovskites PEA$_2$PbI$_4$, BA$_2$PbI$_4$, and PEA$_2$SnI$_4$ (PEA: phenethyl ammonium, BA: butylammonium), are much lower than in comparable 3D perovskites. Bonding disruptions by defects are more detrimental in 2D than in 3D networks, making defect formation energetically more costly. The stability of 2D Sn iodide perovskites can be further enhanced by alloying with Pb. Sh…
We report the relationship between epitaxial strain and the crystallographic orientation of the in-phase rotation axis and A-site displacements in Pbnm-type perovskite films. Synchrotron diffraction measurements of EuFeO3 films under strain states ranging from 2% compressive to 0.9% tensile on cubic or rhombohedral substrates exhibit a combination of a-a+c- and a+a-c- rotational patterns. We compare the EuFeO3 behavior with previously reported experimental and theoretical work on strained Pbnm-type films on non-orthorhombic substrates, as well as additional measurements from LaGaO3, LaFeO3, an…
The octahedral tilting and ferroelectric-like structural transition of LiOsO3 metallic perovskite [Nature Materials 12, 1024 (2013)] was examined using first-principles density-functional theory. In LiOsO3, a-a-a- octahedral titling mode is responsible for the cubic to rhombohedral structural transition, which is stable phase at room temperature. At low temperatures, a non-centrosymmetric transition to a rhombohedra phase was realized due to zone center phonon softening. The phase transition behavior of LiOsO3 can be explained fully by density functional calculations and phonon calculations. T…
Artificial perovskite-oxide nanostructures possess intriguing magnetic properties due to their tailorable electron-electron interactions, which are extremely sensitive to the oxygen coordination environment. To date, perovskite-oxide nanodots with sizes below 50 nm have rarely been reported. Furthermore, the oxygen octahedral distortion and its relation to magnetic properties in perovskite oxide nanodots remain unexplored yet. Here, we have studied the magnetic anisotropy in patterned SrRuO3 (SRO) nanodots as small as 30 nm while performing atomic-resolution electron microscopy and spectroscop…
Metal halide perovskite semiconductors have outstanding optoelectronic properties. Although these perovskites are defect-tolerant electronically, defects hamper their long-term stability and cause degradation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are an important tool to unravel the microscopic structures of defects, but results suffer from the different approximations used in the DFT functionals. In the case of metal halide perovskites, qualitatively different results have been reported with different functionals, either predicting vacancy or interstitial point defects to be most domi…
Rotations and distortions of oxygen octahedra in perovskites play a key role in determining their functional properties. Here we investigate how octahedral rotations can couple from one material to another in La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ epitaxial heterostructures by first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, emphasizing the important differences between systems oriented perpendicular to the (111)- and (001)-facets. We find that the coupling length of out-of-phase octahedral rotations is independent of the crystalline facet, pointing towards a steric effect. Howeve…
Halide perovskites exhibit slow rates of non-radiative electron-hole recombination upon illumination. Chu et al. [Sci. Adv. 6 7, eaaw7453 (2020)] use the results of first-principles simulations to argue that this arises from the nature of the crystal vibrations and leads to a breakdown of Shockley-Read-Hall theory. We highlight flaws in their methodology and analysis of carrier capture by point defects in crystalline semiconductors.
Vacancy defects in thin film laser ablated SrTiO3 on SrTiO3 were identified using variable energy positron annihilation lifetime measurements. Strontium vacancy related defects were the dominant positron traps and, apart from in the top ~ 50 nm, were found to be uniformly distributed. The surface layer showed an increase in annihilation from larger open-volume defects, large vacancy clusters or nanovoids.
The competition between corner, edge and face-sharing octahedral networks is a cause of phase inhomogeneity in metal halide perovskite thin-films. Here we probe the charged iodine vacancy distribution and transport at the junction between cubic and hexagonal polytypes of CsPbI$_3$ from first-principles materials modelling. We predict a lower defect formation energy in the face-sharing regions, which correlates with a longer Pb$-$I bond length and causes a million-fold increase in local defect concentration. These defects are predicted to be more mobile in the face-sharing regions with a reduce…
