Aims: Develop a data-driven and statistically based method for finding such clumps in Integrals of Motion space for nearby halo stars and evaluating their significance robustly. Methods: We use data from Gaia EDR3 extended with radial velocities from ground-based spectroscopic surveys to construct a sample of halo stars within 2.5 kpc from the Sun. We apply a hierarchical clustering method that uses the single linkage algorithm in a 3D space defined by the commonly used integrals of motion energy $E$, together with two components of the angular momentum, $L_z$ and $L_\perp$. To evaluate the statistical significance of the clusters found, we compare the density within an ellipsoidal region centered on the cluster to that of random sets with similar global dynamical properties. We pick out the signal at the location of their maximum statistical significance in the hierarchical tree. We estimate the proximity of a star to the cluster center using the Mahalanobis distance. We also apply the HDBSCAN clustering algorithm in velocity space. Results: Our procedure identifies 67 highly significant clusters ($ > 3σ$), containing 12\% of the sources in our halo set, and in total 232 subgroups or individual streams in velocity space. In total, 13.8\% of the stars in our data set can be confidently associated to a significant cluster based on their Mahalanobis distance. Inspection of our data set reveals a complex web of relationships between the significant clusters, suggesting that they can be tentatively grouped into at least 6 main structures, many of which can be associated to previously identified halo substructures, and a number of independent substructures. This preliminary conclusion is further explored in an accompanying paper by Ruiz-Lara et al., where we also characterize the substructures in terms of their stellar populations. Conclusions: We find... (abridged version)
Stellar halos contain tracers of the assembly history of massive galaxies like our own. Exploiting the synergy between the TGAS and the spectroscopic RAVE surveys, Helmi et al. (2017) recently discovered several distinct substructures in the Solar neighbourhood, defined in integrals of motion space. Some of these substructures may be examples of the building blocks that built up the stellar halo. We analyse the chemical properties of stars in these substructures, with focus on their iron and $α$-element abundances as provided by the RAVE survey chemical pipeline. We perform comparisons of the …
We use the second Gaia data release (Gaia DR2), combined with RAVE spectroscopic surveys, to identify the substructures in the nearby stellar halo. We select 3,845 halo stars kinematically and chemically, and determine their density distribution in energy and angular momentum space. To select the substructures from overdensities, we reshuffle the velocities and estimate their significance. Two statistically significant substructures, GR-1 and GR-2, are identified. GR-1 has a high binding energy and small $z$-angular momentum. GR-2 is metal-rich but retrograde. They are both new substructure, a…
Based on the second Gaia data release (Gaia DR2) and spectroscopy from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Data, we identified 20,089 halo stars kinematically and chemically. The halo streams in the solar neighborhood could be detected in the space of energy and angular momentum. We reshuffle the velocities of these stars to determine the significance of substructure. Finally, we identify 4 statistically significant substructures that are labeled GL-1 through 4. Among these substructures, GL-1 is previously known stream ("N2" stream) and the rest 3 substructu…
We identify substructures of the Galactic halo using 3,003 type $ab$ RR Lyraes (RRab) with 6D position-velocity information from the SDSS, LAMOST, and Gaia EDR3. Based on the information, we define the separation of any two of the stars in the integrals of motion space and identify substructures by utilizing the friends-of-friends algorithm. We identify members belonging to several known substructures: the Sagittarius stream, the Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage (GES), the Sequoia, and the Helmi streams. In addition to these known substructures, there are three other substructures possibly associated wi…
We construct a large halo K-giant sample by combining the positions, distances, radial velocities, and metallicities of over 13,000 LAMOST DR5 halo K giants with the Gaia DR2 proper motions, which covers a Galactocentric distance range of 5-120 kpc. Using a position-velocity clustering estimator (the 6Distance), we statistically quantify the presence of position-velocity substructure at high significance: K giants have more close pairs in position-velocity space than a smooth stellar halo. We find that the amount of substructure in the halo increases with increasing distance and metallicity. W…
Exploring Halo Substructure with Giant Stars: Substructure in the Local Halo as Seen in the Grid Giant Star Survey Including Extended Tidal Debris from Omega Centauri
We introduce gbpTrees: an algorithm for constructing merger trees from cosmological simulations, designed to identify and correct for pathological cases introduced by errors or ambiguities in the halo finding process. gbpTrees is built upon a halo matching method utilising pseudo-radial moments constructed from radially-sorted particle ID lists (no other information is required) and a scheme for classifying merger tree pathologies from networks of matches made to-and-from haloes across snapshots ranging forward-and-backward in time. Focusing on Subfind catalogs for this work, a sweep of parame…
In Lövdal et al, we presented a data-driven method for clustering in Integrals of Motion space and applied it to a large sample of nearby halo stars with 6D phase-space information. We identified a large number of clusters, many of which could tentatively be merged into larger groups. Our goal is to establish the reality of the clusters through a combined study of their stellar populations to gain more insights into the accretion history of the Milky Way. We develop a procedure that quantifies the similarity of clusters based on KS tests using their metallicity distribution functions, and an i…
In order to study the stellar population and possible substructures in the outskirts of Double Cluster $h$ and $χ$ Persei, we investigate using the GAIA DR2 data a sky area of about 7.5 degrees in radius around the Double Cluster cores. We identify member stars using various criteria, including their kinematics (viz, proper motion), individual parallaxes, as well as photometric properties. A total of 2186 member stars in the parameter space were identified as members. Based on the spatial distribution of the member stars, we find an extended halo structure of $h$ and $χ$ Persei, about 6 - 8 ti…
The debris from past merger events is expected and, to some extent, known to populate the stellar halo near the Sun. We aim to identify and characterise such merger debris using Gaia DR3 data supplemented by metallicity and chemical abundance information from LAMOST LRS and APOGEE for halo stars within 2.5 kpc from the Sun. We utilise a single linkage-based clustering algorithm to identify over-densities in Integrals of Motion space that could be due to merger debris. Combined with metallicity information and chemical abundances, we characterise these statistically significant over-densities. …

Stellar streams originating in disrupted dwarf galaxies and star clusters are observed around the Milky Way and nearby galaxies. Such substructures are the important tracers that record how the host haloes have accreted progenitor galaxies. Based on the cosmological context, we investigate the relationship between structural properties of substructures such as length and thinness at $z=0$, and orbits of their progenitors. We model stellar components of a large sample of substructures around Milky Way-sized haloes by combining semi-analytic models with a high-resolution cosmological $N$-body si…

Galactic haloes in a $Λ$-CDM universe are predicted to host today a swarm of debris resulting from cannibalised dwarf galaxies. The chemo-dynamical information recorded in their stellar populations helps elucidate their nature, constraining the assembly history of the Galaxy. Using data from APOGEE and \textit{Gaia}, we examine the chemical properties of various halo substructures, considering elements that sample various nucleosynthetic pathways. The systems studied are Heracles, \textit{Gaia}-Enceladus/Sausage (GES), the Helmi stream, Sequoia, Thamnos, Aleph, LMS-1, Arjuna, I'itoi, Nyx, Icar…
We present direct $N$-body simulations of tidally filling 30,000 ${\rm M}_\odot$ star clusters orbiting between 10 kpc and 100 kpc in galaxies with a range of dark matter substructure properties. The time-dependent tidal force is determined based on the combined tidal tensor of the galaxy's smooth and clumpy dark matter components, the latter of which causes fluctuations in the tidal field that can heat clusters. The strength and duration of these fluctuations are sensitive to the local dark matter density, substructure fraction, sub-halo mass function, and the sub-halo mass-size relation. Bas…
The survey of planetary nebulae in Andromeda (M31) VII. Predictions of a major merger simulation model compared with chemodynamical data of the disc and inner halo substructures
We use $N$-body simulations to investigate the excitation of bending waves in a Milky Way-like disc-bulge-halo system. The dark matter halo consists of a smooth component and a population of subhaloes while the disc is composed of thin and thick components. Also considered is a control simulation where all of the halo mass is smoothly distributed. We find that bending waves are more vigorously excited in the thin disc than the thick one and that they are strongest in the outer regions of the disc, especially at late times. By way of a Fourier decomposition, we find that the complicated pattern…
The survey of planetary nebulae in Andromeda (M31) VI. Kinematics of M31 inner-halo substructures and comparison with major-merger simulation predictions
Thanks to modern sky surveys, over twenty stellar streams and overdensity structures have been discovered in the halo of the Milky Way. In this paper, we present an analysis of spectroscopic observations of individual stars from one such structure, "A13", first identified as an overdensity using the M giant catalog from the Two Micron All-Sky Survey. Our spectroscopic observations show that stars identified with A13 have a velocity dispersion of $\lesssim$ 40 $\mathrm{km~s^{-1}}$, implying that it is a genuine coherent structure rather than a chance super-position of random halo stars. From it…
The local stellar halo of the Milky Way contains the debris from several past accretion events. Here we study in detail the structure and properties of nearby debris associated with the Helmi streams, originally identified as an overdensity in integrals of motion space. We use 6D phase-space information from Gaia EDR3 combined with spectroscopic surveys, and we analyse the orbits and frequencies of the stars in the streams using various Galactic potentials. We also explore how the Helmi streams constrain the flattening q, of the Galactic dark matter halo. We find that the streams are split int…
We propose and test a method for applying statistical photometric parallax to main sequence turn off (MSTO) stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Using simulated data, we show that if our density model is similar to the actual density distribution of our data, we can reliably determine the density model parameters of three major substructures in the Milky Way halo using the computational resources available on MilkyWay@home (a twenty parameter fit). We fit the stellar density in SDSS stripe 19 with a smooth stellar spheroid component and three major streams. One of these streams is con…
The Andromeda (M31) galaxy displays several substructures in its inner halo whose origin as remnants of accreted satellites or perturbations of the pre-existing disc are encoded in the properties of their stellar populations (SPs), leaving traces on their deep [OIII] 5007 Åplanetary nebulae luminosity functions (PNLFs). By characterizing the morphology of the PNLFs, we constrain their origin. From our 54 sq. deg. deep narrow-band [OIII] survey of M31, we identify planetary nebulae (PNe) in the M31 disc and six major inner-halo substructures - the Giant Stream, North East Shelf, G1-Clump, North…
It has recently been proposed that if the Galactic dark matter halo were triaxial it would induce lumpiness in the velocity distribution of halo stars in the Solar Neighbourhood through orbital resonances. These substructures could therefore provide a way of measuring its shape. We explore the robustness of this proposal by integrating numerically orbits starting from a realistic set of initial conditions in dark halo potentials of different shape. We have analysed the resulting velocity distributions in Solar neighbourhood-like volumes, and have performed statistical tests for the presence of…
We present a study of unprecedented statistical power regarding the halo-to-halo variance of dark matter substructure. Using a combination of N-body simulations and a semi-analytical model, we investigate the variance in subhalo mass fractions and subhalo occupation numbers, with an emphasis on how these statistics scale with halo formation time. We demonstrate that the subhalo mass fraction, f_sub, is mainly a function of halo formation time, with earlier forming haloes having less substructure. At fixed formation redshift, the average f_sub is virtually independent of halo mass, and the mass…
A Megacam Survey of Outer Halo Satellites. IV. Two foreground populations possibly associated with the Monoceros substructure in the direction of NGC2419 and Koposov2
We investigate the impact of dynamical streams and substructure on estimates of the local escape speed and total mass of Milky Way-mass galaxies from modelling the high velocity tail of local halo stars. We use a suite of high-resolution, magneto-hydrodynamical cosmological zoom-in simulations, which resolve phase space substructure in local volumes around solar-like positions. We show that phase space structure varies significantly between positions in individual galaxies and across the suite. Substructure populates the high velocity tail unevenly and leads to discrepancies in the mass estima…
The vast majority of Milky Way stellar halo stars were likely accreted from a small number ($\lesssim$3) of relatively large dwarf galaxy accretion events. However, the timing of these events is poorly constrained, relying predominantly on indirect dynamical mixing arguments or imprecise age measurements of stars associated with debris structures. Here, we aim to infer robust stellar ages for stars associated with galactic substructures to more directly constrain the merger history of the Galaxy. By combining kinematic, asteroseismic, and spectroscopic data where available, we infer stellar ag…
We derive the halo mass function (HMF) for fuzzy dark matter (FDM) by solving the excursion set problem explicitly with a mass-dependent barrier function, which has not been done before. We find that compared to the naive approach of the Sheth--Tormen HMF for FDM, our approach has a higher cut off mass and the cut off mass changes less strongly with redshifts. Using merger trees constructed with a modified version of the Lacey & Cole formalism that accounts for suppressed small scale power and the scale-dependent growth of FDM haloes and the semi-analytic GALACTICUS code, we study the statisti…
Based upon a metallicity selection, we identify a significant sub-population of the inner halo globular clusters in the Andromeda Galaxy which we name the Dulais Structure. It is distinguished as a co-rotating group of 10-20 globular clusters which appear to be kinematically distinct from, and on average more metal-poor than, the majority of the inner halo population. Intriguingly, the orbital axis of this Dulais Structure is closely aligned with that of the younger accretion event recently identified using a sub-population of globular clusters in the outer halo of Andromeda, and this is stron…
Time delay cosmography uses the arrival time delays between images in strong gravitational lenses to measure cosmological parameters, in particular the Hubble constant $H_0$. The lens models used in time delay cosmography omit dark matter subhalos and line-of-sight halos because their effects are assumed to be negligible. We explicitly quantify this assumption by analyzing mock lens systems that include full populations of dark matter subhalos and line-of-sight halos, applying the same modeling assumptions used in the literature to infer $H_0$. We base the mock lenses on six quadruply-imaged q…
We used optical imaging and spectroscopic data to derive substructure estimates for local Universe ($z < 0.11$) galaxy clusters from two different samples. The first was selected through the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect by the Planck satellite and the second is an X-ray selected sample. In agreement to X-ray substructure estimates we found that the SZ systems have a larger fraction of substructure than the X-ray clusters. We have also found evidence that the higher mass regime of the SZ clusters, compared to the X-ray sample, explains the larger fraction of disturbed objects in the Planck da…
A promising route for revealing the existence of dark matter structures on mass scales smaller than the faintest galaxies is through their effect on strong gravitational lenses. We examine the role of local, lens-proximate clustering in boosting the lensing probability relative to contributions from substructure and unclustered line-of-sight (LOS) halos. Using two cosmological simulations that can resolve halo masses of $M_{\rm halo} \simeq 10^{9}\ M_{\odot}$ (in a simulation box of length $L_{\rm box}{\sim}100\,{\rm Mpc}$) and $10^{7}\ M_{\odot}$ ($L_{\rm box}\sim20\,{\rm Mpc}$), we demonstra…
Dark matter substructure can contribute significantly to local dark matter searches and may provide a large uncertainty in the interpretation of those experiments. For direct detection experiments, sub-halos give rise to an additional dark matter component on top of the smooth dark matter distribution of the host halo. In the case of dark matter capture in the Sun, sub-halo encounters temporarily increase the number of captured particles. Even if the encounter happened in the past, the number of dark matter particles captured by the Sun can still be enhanced today compared to expectations from…
Tidal debris structures formed from disrupted satellites contain important clues about the assembly histories of galaxies. To date, studies of these structures have been hampered by reliance on by-eye identification and morphological classification which leaves their interpretation significantly uncertain. In this work we present a new machine-vision technique based on the Subspace-Constrained Mean Shift (SCMS) algorithm which can perform these tasks automatically. SCMS finds the location of the high-density `ridges' that define substructure morphology. After identification, the coefficients o…
