This paper deals with triangulations of the 2-torus with the vertex labeled general octahedral graph $O_4$ which is isomorphic to the complete four-partite graph $K_{2,2,2,2}$; it is known that there exist precisely twelve such triangulations. We find all the 12 triangulations in a Schlegel diagram of the hyperoctahedron and realize all of them geometrically with the same 1-skeleton in 3-space. In particular, we identify two geometric polyhedral tori (both without self-intersections) with the same 1-skeleton in 3-space, but without a single common face, or in other words their intersection (as point-sets) is only their common 1-skeleton. Similarly, all the twelve triangulations of the 2D projective plane with the vertex labeled complete graph $K_6$ are found in a Schlegel diagram of the 5-simplex and all are realized geometrically with the same 1-skeleton in 4-space; especially we obtain a pair of triangulations of the Möbius band and a pair of triangulated projective planes with the same 1-skeleton (within each pair) in 3-space and 4-space, respectively, without a single common face. The constructed polyhedra are modeled and visualized with GeoGebra.
In this note, we improve Nikulin's inequality in the case of right-angled hyperbolic polyhedra. The new inequality allows to give much shorter proofs of the known dimension bounds. We also improve Nonaka's lower bound on the number of ideal vertices for right-angled hyperbolic polyhedra.
In this paper we obtain new upper bounds on volumes of right-angled polyhedra in hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^3$ in three different cases: for ideal polyhedra with all vertices on the ideal hyperbolic boundary, for compact polytopes with only finite (or usual) vertices, and for finite volume polyhedra with vertices of both types.
The prism over a graph $G$ is the Cartesian product of $G$ with the complete graph on two vertices. A graph $G$ is prism-hamiltonian if the prism over $G$ is hamiltonian. We prove that every polyhedral graph (i.e. 3-connected planar graph) of minimum degree at least four is prism-hamiltonian.
We study the abstract regular polyhedra with automorphism groups that act faithfully on their vertices, and show that each non-flat abstract regular polyhedron covers a "vertex-faithful" polyhedron with the same number of vertices. We then use this result and earlier work on flat polyhedra to study abstract regular polyhedra based on the size of their vertex set. In particular, we classify all regular polyhedra where the number of vertices is prime or twice a prime. We also construct the smallest regular polyhedra with a prime squared number of vertices.
We obtain a transference bound for vertices of corner polyhedra that connects two well-established areas of research: proximity and sparsity of solutions to integer programs. In the knapsack scenario, it gives an exponential (in the size of support of a solution) improvement on previously known proximity estimates. In addition, for general integer linear programs we obtain a resembling result that connects the minimum absolute nonzero entry of an optimal solution with the size of its support.
A pseudo-edge graph of a convex polyhedron K is a 3-connected embedded graph in K whose vertices coincide with those of K, whose edges are distance minimizing geodesics, and whose faces are convex. We construct a convex polyhedron K in Euclidean 3-space with a pseudo-edge graph with respect to which K is not unfoldable. The proof is based on a result of Pogorelov on convex caps with prescribed curvature, and an unfoldability obstruction for almost flat convex caps due to Tarasov. Our example, which has 340 vertices, significantly simplifies an earlier construction by Tarasov, and confirms that…
Let $G$ be a cubic graph and $Π$ be a polyhedral embedding of this graph. The extended graph, $G^{e},$ of $Π$ is the graph whose set of vertices is $V(G^{e})=V(G)$ and whose set of edges $E(G^{e})$ is equal to $E(G) \cup \mathcal{S}$, where $\mathcal{S}$ is constructed as follows: given two vertices $t_0$ and $t_3$ in $V(G^{e})$ we say $[t_0 t_3] \in \mathcal{S},$ if there is a $3$--path, $(t_0 t_1 t_2 t_3) \in G$ that is a $Π$-- facial subwalk of the embedding. We prove that there is a one to one correspondence between the set of possible extended graphs of $G$ and polyhedral embeddings of $G…
The problem of counting the number of waves arriving at the vertex of a polyhedron is motivated by physics. In the article it was solved for the case of Platonic solid using three nontrivial results from number theory. This growth turns out to be subexponential. Also we prove a subexponential upper bound for all polyhedra with rational total angles at vertices.
A coloring of the vertices of a connected graph is convex if each color class induces a connected subgraph. We address the convex recoloring (CR) problem defined as follows. Given a graph $G$ and a coloring of its vertices, recolor a minimum number of vertices of $G$ so that the resulting coloring is convex. This problem, known to be NP-hard even on paths, was firstly motivated by applications on perfect phylogenies. In this work, we study CR on general graphs from a polyhedral point of view. First, we introduce a full-dimensional polytope based on the idea of connected subgraphs, and present …
Given vertex valencies admissible for a self-dual polyhedral graph, we describe an algorithm to explicitly construct such a polyhedron. Inputting in the algorithm permutations of the degree sequence can give rise to non-isomorphic graphs. As an application, we find as a function of $n\geq 3$ the minimal number of vertices for a self-dual polyhedron with at least one vertex of degree $i$ for each $3\leq i\leq n$, and construct such polyhedra. Moreover, we find a construction for non-self-dual polyhedral graphs of minimal order with at least one vertex of degree $i$ and at least one $i$-gonal fa…
Let $G$ be a graph, and $v\in V(G)$ and $S\subseteq V(G)\backslash v$ of size at least $k$. An important result on graph connectivity due to Perfect states that, if $v$ and $S$ are $k$-linked, then a $(k-1)$-link between a vertex $v$ and $S$ can be extended to a $k$-link between $v$ and $S$ such that the endvertices of the $(k-1)$-link are also the endvertices of the $k$-link. We begin by proving a generalization of Perfect's result by showing that, if two disjoint sets $S_1$ and $S_2$ are $k$-linked, then a $t$-link ($t< k$) between two disjoint sets $S_1$ and $S_2$ can be extended to a $k$-l…
A sequence $σ$ of $p$ non-negative integers is unigraphic if it is the degree sequence of exactly one graph, up to isomorphism. A polyhedral graph is a $3$-connected, planar graph. We investigate which sequences are unigraphic with respect to the class of polyhedral graphs, meaning that they admit exactly one realisation as a polyhedron. We focus on the case of sequences with largest entry $p-2$. We give a classification of polyhedral unigraphic sequences starting with $p-2,p-2$, as well as those starting with $p-2$ and containing exactly one $3$. Moreover, we characterise the unigraphic seque…
This work is about graphs arising from Reuleaux polyhedra. Such graphs must necessarily be planar, $3$-connected and strongly self-dual. We study the question of when these conditions are sufficient. If $G$ is any such a graph with isomorphism $τ: G \to G^*$ (where $G^*$ is the unique dual graph), a metric mapping is a map $η: V(G) \to \mathbb R^3$ such that the diameter of $η(G)$ is $1$ and for every pair of vertices $(u,v)$ such that $u\in τ(v)$ we have dist$(η(u),η(v)) = 1$. If $η$ is injective, it is called a metric embedding. Note that a metric embedding gives rise to a Reuleaux Polyhedra…
The theory of matroids or combinatorial geometries originated in linear algebra and graph theory, and has deep connections with many other areas, including field theory, matching theory, submodular optimization, Lie combinatorics, and total positivity. Matroids capture the combinatorial essence that these different settings share. In recent years, the (classical, polyhedral, algebraic, and tropical) geometric roots of the field have grown much deeper, bearing new fruits. We survey some recent successes, stemming from three geometric models of a matroid: the matroid polytope, the Bergman fan, a…
We show an explicit construction in 3 dimensions for a convex, mono-monostatic polyhedron (i.e., having exactly one stable and one unstable equilibrium) with 21 vertices and 21 faces. This polyhedron is a 0-skeleton, with equal masses located at each vertex. The above construction serves as an upper bound for the minimal number of faces and vertices of mono-monostatic 0-skeletons and complements the recently provided lower bound of 8 vertices. This is the first known construction of a mono-monostatic polyhedral solid. We also show that a similar construction for homogeneous distribution of mas…
