A deep learning model gives an incredible result for image processing by studying from the trained dataset. Spinach is a leaf vegetable that contains vitamins and nutrients. In our research, a Deep learning method has been used that can automatically identify spinach and this method has a dataset of a total of five species of spinach that contains 3785 images. Four Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models were used to classify our spinach. These models give more accurate results for image classification. Before applying these models there is some preprocessing of the image data. For the preprocessing of data, some methods need to happen. Those are RGB conversion, filtering, resize & rescaling, and categorization. After applying these methods image data are pre-processed and ready to be used in the classifier algorithms. The accuracy of these classifiers is in between 98.68% - 99.79%. Among those models, VGG16 achieved the highest accuracy of 99.79%.
Sports activities are an integral part of our day to day life. Introducing autonomous decision making and predictive models to recognize and analyze different sports events and activities has become an emerging trend in computer vision arena. Albeit the advances and vivid applications of artificial intelligence and computer vision in recognizing different popular western games, there remains a very minimal amount of efforts in the application of computer vision in recognizing traditional Bangladeshi games. We, in this paper, have described a novel Deep Learning based approach for recognizing t…
There is an increasing demand for software that automatically detects and classifies mobile targets such as airplanes, cars, and ships in satellite imagery. Applications of such automated target recognition (ATR) software include economic forecasting, traffic planning, maritime law enforcement, and disaster response. This paper describes the extension of a convolutional neural network (CNN) for classification to a sliding window algorithm for detection. It is evaluated on mobile targets of the xView dataset, on which it achieves detection and classification accuracies higher than 95%.

Recognizing Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) has a large number of health applications, such as characterize lifestyle for habit improvement, nursing and rehabilitation services. Wearable cameras can daily gather large amounts of image data that provide rich visual information about ADLs than using other wearable sensors. In this paper, we explore the classification of ADLs from images captured by low temporal resolution wearable camera (2fpm) by using a Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) approach. We show that the classification accuracy of a CNN largely improves when its output is combined…

Eye movements have been widely investigated to study the atypical visual attention in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The majority of these studies have been focused on limited eye movement features by statistical comparisons between ASD and Typically Developing (TD) groups, which make it difficult to accurately separate ASD from TD at the individual level. The deep learning technology has been highly successful in overcoming this issue by automatically extracting features important for classification through a data-driven learning process. However, there is still a lack of end-to-end deep lea…
Human Activity Recognition has witnessed a significant progress in the last decade. Although a great deal of work in this field goes in recognizing normal human activities, few studies focused on identifying motion in sports. Recognizing human movements in different sports has high impact on understanding the different styles of humans in the play and on improving their performance. As deep learning models proved to have good results in many classification problems, this paper will utilize deep learning to classify cross-country skiing movements, known as gears, collected using a 3D accelerome…

This paper is a brief report to our submission to the Recognizing Families In the Wild Data Challenge (4th Edition), in conjunction with FG 2020 Forum. Automatic kinship recognition has attracted many researchers' attention for its full application, but it is still a very challenging task because of the limited information that can be used to determine whether a pair of faces are blood relatives or not. In this paper, we studied previous methods and proposed our method. We try many methods, like deep metric learning-based, to extract deep embedding feature for every image, then determine if th…
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have achieved state-of-the-art performance on a variety of computer vision tasks, particularly visual classification problems, where new algorithms reported to achieve or even surpass the human performance. In this paper, we examine whether CNNs are capable of learning the semantics of training data. To this end, we evaluate CNNs on negative images, since they share the same structure and semantics as regular images and humans can classify them correctly. Our experimental results indicate that when training on regular images and testing on negative images, …

In this work we propose a methodology for an automatic food classification system which recognizes the contents of the meal from the images of the food. We developed a multi-layered deep convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture that takes advantages of the features from other deep networks and improves the efficiency. Numerous classical handcrafted features and approaches are explored, among which CNNs are chosen as the best performing features. Networks are trained and fine-tuned using preprocessed images and the filter outputs are fused to achieve higher accuracy. Experimental results…

This paper is motivated from a young boy's capability to recognize an illustrator's style in a totally different context. In the book "We are All Born Free" [1], composed of selected rights from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights interpreted by different illustrators, the boy was surprised to see a picture similar to the ones in the "Winnie the Witch" series drawn by Korky Paul (Figure 1). The style was noticeable in other characters of the same illustrator in different books as well. The capability of a child to easily spot the style was shown to be valid for other illustrators such as…
Bird species classification has received more and more attention in the field of computer vision, for its promising applications in biology and environmental studies. Recognizing bird species is difficult due to the challenges of discriminative region localization and fine-grained feature learning. In this paper, we have introduced a Transfer learning based method with multistage training. We have used both Pre-Trained Mask-RCNN and an ensemble model consisting of Inception Nets (InceptionV3 & InceptionResNetV2 ) to get localization and species of the bird from the images respectively. In many real world medical image classification settings we do not have access to samples of all possible disease classes, while a robust system is expected to give high performance in recognizing novel test data. We propose a generalized zero shot learning (GZSL) method that uses self supervised learning (SSL) for: 1) selecting anchor vectors of different disease classes; and 2) training a feature generator. Our approach does not require class attribute vectors which are available for natural images but not for medical images. SSL ensures that the anchor vectors are representative of each cla…

The style of an image plays a significant role in how it is viewed, but style has received little attention in computer vision research. We describe an approach to predicting style of images, and perform a thorough evaluation of different image features for these tasks. We find that features learned in a multi-layer network generally perform best -- even when trained with object class (not style) labels. Our large-scale learning methods results in the best published performance on an existing dataset of aesthetic ratings and photographic style annotations. We present two novel datasets: 80K Fl…

In this paper, we consider a different data format for images: vector graphics. In contrast to raster graphics which are widely used in image recognition, vector graphics can be scaled up or down into any resolution without aliasing or information loss, due to the analytic representation of the primitives in the document. Furthermore, vector graphics are able to give extra structural information on how low-level elements group together to form high level shapes or structures. These merits of graphic vectors have not been fully leveraged in existing methods. To explore this data format, we targ…

Specifically, we propose a conditional variational autoencoder that learns both the decomposition of inputs and the distributions of the resulting components. During test, we jointly optimize the latent variables of the generator and the relaxed component labels to find the best match between the given input and the output of the generator. The model demonstrates promising performance at recognizing overlap…

Microtubule networks (MTs) are a component of a cell that may indicate the presence of various chemical compounds and can be used to recognize properties such as treatment resistance. Therefore, the classification of MT images is of great relevance for cell diagnostics. Human experts find it particularly difficult to recognize the levels of chemical compound exposure of a cell. Improving the accuracy with automated techniques would have a significant impact on cell therapy. In this paper we present the application of Deep Learning to MT image classification and evaluate it on a large MT image …

Development of depth sensors has made it feasible to track positions of human body joints over time. This paper proposes a novel method of action recognition which uses temporal 3D skeletal Kinect data. Recently, recognition of gender from facial images has gained a lot of importance. There exist a handful of research work that focus on feature extraction to obtain gender specific information from facial images. However, analyzing different facial regions and their fusion help in deciding the gender of a person from facial images. In this paper, we propose a new approach to identify gender from frontal facial images that is robust to background, illumination, intensity, and facial expression. In our framework, first the frontal face image is divided into a number of distinct regions based on …

Activity recognition has shown impressive progress in recent years. However, the challenges of detecting fine-grained activities and understanding how they are combined into composite activities have been largely overlooked. In this work we approach both tasks and present a dataset which provides detailed annotations to address them. The first challenge is to detect fine-grained activities, which are defined by low inter-class variability and are typically characterized by fine-grained body motions. We explore how human pose and hands can help to approach this challenge by comparing two pose-b…
Humans rely on properties of the materials that make up objects to guide our interactions with them. Grasping smooth materials, for example, requires care, and softness is an ideal property for fabric used in bedding. Even when these properties are not visual (e.g. softness is a physical property), we may still infer their presence visually. We refer to such material properties as visual material attributes. Recognizing these attributes in images can contribute valuable information for general scene understanding and material recognition. Unlike well-known object and scene attributes, visual m…
We perform fine-grained land use mapping at the city scale using ground-level images. Mapping land use is considerably more difficult than mapping land cover and is generally not possible using overhead imagery as it requires close-up views and seeing inside buildings. We develop a general framework that uses Flickr images to map 45 different land-use classes for the City of San Francisco. Individual images are classified using a novel co…

However, rarely is superpixel segmentation examined within the context of deep convolutional neural network architectures. This paper presents a novel neural architecture that exploits the superpixel feature space. The visual feature space is organized using superpixels to provide the neural network with a substructure of the images. As the superpixels associate the visual feature space with …

Object detection and recognition has been an ongoing research topic for a long time in the field of computer vision. Even in robotics, detecting the state of an object by a robot still remains a challenging task. Also, collecting data for each possible state is also not feasible. We also study how a generative adversarial network can be used for synthetic data augmentation and improving the classification accuracy. The main motivation behind this work …

The ability to recognize objects is an essential skill for a robotic system acting in human-populated environments. Despite decades of effort from the robotic and vision research communities, robots are still missing good visual perceptual systems, preventing the use of autonomous agents for real-world applications. The progress is slowed down by the lack of a testbed able to accurately represent the world perceived by the robot in-the-wild. In order to fill this gap, we introduce a large-scale, multi-view object dataset collected with an RGB-D camera mounted on a mobile robot. The dataset emb…

Recent advances have enabled "oracle" classifiers that can classify across many classes and input distributions with high accuracy without retraining. However, these classifiers are relatively heavyweight, so that applying them to classify video is costly. We show that day-to-day video exhibits highly skewed class distributions over the short term, and that these distributions can be classified by much simpler models. We formulate the problem of detecting the short-term skews online and exploiting models based on it as a new sequential decision making problem dubbed the Online Bandit Problem, …

Humans focus attention on different face regions when recognizing face attributes. Most existing face attribute classification methods use the whole image as input. Moreover, some of these methods rely on fiducial landmarks to provide defined face parts. In this paper, we propose a cascade network that simultaneously learns to localize face regions specific to attributes and performs attribute classification without alignment. First, a weakly-supervised face region localization network is designed to automatically detect regions (or parts) specific to attributes. Then multiple part-based netwo…
We show that correlations between the camera used to acquire an image and the class label of that image can be exploited by convolutional neural networks (CNN), resulting in a model that "cheats" at an image classification task by recognizing which camera took the image and inferring the class label from the camera. We show that models trained on a dataset with camera / label correlations do not generalize well to images in which those correlations are absent, nor to images from unencountered cameras. Furthermore, we investigate which visual features they are exploiting for camera recognition.…

We perform the classification of ancient Roman Republican coins via recognizing their reverse motifs where various objects, faces, scenes, animals, and buildings are minted along with legends. Most of these coins are eroded due to their age and varying degrees of preservation, thereby affecting their informative attributes for visual recognition. Changes in the positions of principal symbols on the reverse motifs also cause huge variations among the coin types. Lastly, in-plane orientations, uneven illumination, and a moderate background clutter further make the classification task non-trivial…
Recognizing the country where a picture has been taken has many potential applications, such as identification of fake news and prevention of disinformation campaigns. Previous works focused on the estimation of the geo-coordinates where a picture has been taken. Yet, recognizing in which country an image was taken could be more critical, from a semantic and forensic point of view, than estimating its spatial coordinates. In the above framework, this paper provides two contributions. First, we introduce the VIPPGeo dataset, containing 3.8 million geo-tagged images. Secondly, we used the datase…

Our goal in this work is automatizing this time consuming and demanding task by a visual classification framework. Specifically, we propose to model ancient coin image classification using Graph Transduction Games (GTG). Most recent work focused on affect from facial expressions, and not as much on body. This work focuses on body affect analysis. Affect does not occur in isolation. Humans usually couple affect with an action in natural interactions; for example, a person could be talking and smiling. Recognizing body affect in sequences requires efficient algorithms to capture both the micro movements that differentiate between happy and sad and the macro variations between different actions. We depart from traditional approaches for time-series data analytics by proposing a multi-task learning model that lear…

Few-shot image classification aims at recognizing unseen categories with a small number of labeled training data. Recent metric-based frameworks tend to represent a support class by a fixed prototype (e.g., the mean of the support category) and make classification according to the similarities between query instances and support prototypes. However, discriminative dominant regions may locate uncertain areas of images and have various scales, which leads to the misaligned metric. Besides, a fixed prototype for one support category cannot fit for all query instances to accurately reflect their d…
