This paper investigates the acoustic Luneburg Lens (ALL) as a design framework for guiding acoustic wave propagation. In this study, we propose to develop an acoustic waveguide based on the characteristics of both acoustic wave focusing and collimation of cascaded ALLs. The continuous variation of refractive index of the ALL is achieved by using lattice unit cells with a graded filling ratio. A cascaded ALL waveguide device is fabricated based on the additive manufacturing technique. The experimental results obtained with this device are consistent with the numerical simulations and theoretical calculations.
In this paper, we explore the concept of structural Luneburg Lens (SLL) as a design framework for performing dynamic structural tailoring to obtain a structural wave cloak and a structural waveguide. The SLL is a graded refractive index lens, which is realized by using a variable thickness structure defined in a thin plate. Due to the thickness variation of the plate, the refractive index decreases radially from the centre to the outer surface of the lens. By taking advantage of the unique capabilities of SLL for flexural wave focusing and collimation, we develop a structural wave cloak and wa…
In integrated photonic circuits, silicon-on-insulator waveguides with different geometries have been employed to realize a variety of components. Therefore, efficient coupling of two different waveguides is crucial. In this paper, focusing property of the Luneburg lens is exploited to design waveguide tapers. The Luneburg lens, truncated in a shape of a parabolic taper with reduced footprint, is utilized to connect a 10 $μ$m-wide waveguide to a 0.5 $μ$m one with the same thickness with an average coupling loss of 0.35 dB in the entire O, E, S, C, L, and U bands of optical communications. The p…
We present a detailed analysis of a coupler based on the Luneburg lens to couple a silica waveguide to a photonic crystal waveguide. The dependence of coupling efficiency on the lens's truncation, cut position of the photonic crystal structure, coupler tip width, and misalignment are investigated with two-dimensional finite element method. We implement the lens with a concentric ring-based multilayer structure. We also present a method to replace layers with very narrow widths by layers of predetermined minimum widths in the structure of the lens. The coupling loss of the designed 2.7 $μm$-lon…
In this study, the design of a directional cloaking based on the Luneburg lens system is proposed and its operating principle is experimentally verified. The cloaking concept is analytically investigated via geometrical optics and numerically realized with the help of the finite-difference time-domain method. In order to benefit from its unique focusing and/or collimating characteristics of light, the Luneburg lens is used. We show that by the proper combination of Luneburg lenses in an array form, incident light bypasses the region between junctions of the lenses, i.e., the "dark zone." Hence…
Applying the directionality of a Luneburg lens, a sound reception system for ships is designed. A two-dimensional acoustic Luneburg lens which is made of 253 acrylic pipes of different radii which control the refractive index is used. It has a large disk shape; a diameter of 180 cm and a height of 20 cm. The 8 microphones were installed around the edges of the lens. The sound reception ability of the lens was tested on the sea using the horn of a university training ship as an emitter and the lens loaded on a small boat as a receiver. Both are moving at 20 ~ 40 km/h at a distance of between 30…
Silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$) planar waveguide platform combined with silicon-on-insulator (SOI) devices offer a whole new generation of system-on-chip applications. Therefore, efficient coupling of an $Si_3N_4$ waveguide to an SOI waveguide is essential. We present a coupler to interface a 1.8 $μm$-wide $Si_3N_4$ waveguide to a 0.5 $μm$-wide SOI waveguide based on the focusing property of the Luneburg lens. In order to match the refractive indices of the waveguides with the edges of the lens, one side of the lens is flattened with quasi-conformal transformation optics. The designed coupler is i…
A highly sensitive refractive index sensor based on grating-assisted strip waveguide directional coupler is proposed. The sensor is designed using two coupled asymmetric strip waveguides with a top-loaded grating structure in one of the waveguides. Maximum light couples from one waveguide to the other at the resonance wavelength, and the change in resonance wavelength with the change in refractive index of the medium in the cover region is a measure of the sensitivity. The proposed sensor would be an on-chip device with a high refractive index sensitivity of ~ 104 nm/RIU, and negligible temper…
Chiral light-matter interaction can lead to directional emission of two-level light emitters in waveguides. This interesting physics effect has raised considerable attention in recent years especially in terms of on-chip quantum systems. In this context, our work focuses on tailoring single semiconductor quantum dot-waveguide (QD-WG) systems to emit single photons with high directionality. We use low-temperature in-situ electron-beam lithography enabled by cathodoluminescence mapping to select suitable QDs and to integrate them deterministically into linear waveguide structures at specific chi…

We propose and demonstrate a passively biased 2 by 2 thermo-optic switch with high power efficiency and fast response time. The device benefits from the highly concentrated optical field of a slot waveguide mode and the strong thermo-optic effect of a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) cladding. The NLC fills the nano-slot region and is aligned by the subwavelength grating inside. The measured power consumption and thermal time constant are 0.58 mW and 11.8 microsecond, respectively, corresponding to a figure-of-merit of 6.8. The proposed silicon-organic hybrid device provides a new solution to desi…
Topological waveguides have been extensively studied for their robust transmission properties immune to defects and their application potentials for microwave and terahertz integrated circuits. In this work, by using grounded planar valley-Hall photonic topological insulators, a high-efficiency topological directional coupler fed directly by microstrip line with configurable coupling coefficient is theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The topological directional coupler consists of two coupled topological waveguides, which can be directly integrated with microstrip circuits.…
Unidirectional waves are the waves propagating only in one direction and prohibited in opposite direction. This kind of waves can be surface waves realized by topological edge state or bulk waves in the media with time reversal and space inversion symmetry broken. Here, we introduce unidirectional waveguide modes in the periodic dielectric chain comprised of gyromagnetic rods. In this modes, the waves in the waveguide propagates unidirectional, but can be converted into bi-directional waves by changing the arrangement of rods. We show unidirectional guided waves result from the time-mirror sym…
A novel class of photonic integrated circuits employs large-scale integration of combined beam splitters and waveguides loaded with phase actuators to provide complex linear processing functionalities that can be reconfigured dynamically. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a thermally-actuated Dual-Drive Directional Coupler (DD-DC) design, integrated in a silicon nitride platform, functioning both as a standalone optical component providing arbitrary optical beam splitting and common phase as well as for its use in waveguide mesh arrangements. We analyze the experimental demonstra…
On-chip ultraviolet to infrared (UV-IR) spectrum frequency metrology is of crucial importance as a characterization tool for fundamental studies on quantum physics, chemistry, and biology. Due to the strong material dispersion, traditional techniques fail to demonstrate the device that can be applied to generate coherent broadband spectrum that covers the full UV-IR wavelengths. In this work, we explore several novel techniques for supercontinuum generation covering near-UV to near-IR spectrum using AlN micro-photonic waveguides, which is essential for frequency metrology applications: First, …
We present a rotated polarization directional coupler (RPDC) on a photonic chip. We demonstrate a double-track approach to modify the distribution of refractive index between adjacent tracks and form a single waveguide with arbitrary birefringent optical axis. We construct a RPDC with the two axis-rotated waveguides coupled in a strong regime. The obtained extinction ratios on average are about 16dB and 20dB for the corresponding orthogonal polarizations. We perform the reconstruction of Stokes vector to test the projection performance of our RPDC, and observe the average fidelities up to 98.1…
We demonstrated fabrication of waveguide and directional coupler in bulk glass-ceramics Zerodur, through femtosecond laser direct-writing. Waveguide propagation loss of no more than 1.5 dB/cm was achieved. We expect this will lead to the deployment of Zerodur integrated photonics in fields like space-borne astronomy, quantum technology and fundamental physics, for both economic and technical benefits.
Magnons, the quanta of spin waves, could be used to encode information in beyond-Moore computing applications, and magnonic device components, including logic gates, transistors, and units for non-Boolean computing, have already been developed. Magnonic directional couplers, which can function as circuit building blocks, have also been explored, but have been impractical because of their millimetre dimensions and multi-mode spectra. Here, we report a magnonic directional coupler based on yttrium iron garnet single-mode waveguides of 350 nm width. We use the amplitude of a spin-wave to encode i…
