Chiral light-matter interaction can lead to directional emission of two-level light emitters in waveguides. This interesting physics effect has raised considerable attention in recent years especially in terms of on-chip quantum systems. In this context, our work focuses on tailoring single semiconductor quantum dot-waveguide (QD-WG) systems to emit single photons with high directionality. We use low-temperature in-situ electron-beam lithography enabled by cathodoluminescence mapping to select suitable QDs and to integrate them deterministically into linear waveguide structures at specific chiral points determined by numerical calculations. We observe excitonic and biexcitonic emission from the fabricated QD-WG structure in a confocal microPL setup enabling the optical characterization in terms of directional emission of circularly polarized photons emitted by integrated QDs. Our results show a high degree of anisotropy on the level of 54% for directional QD emission and antibunching in autocorrelation experiment confirming the fabricated QD-WG system, which is a prerequisite for using this effect in advanced applications in integrated quantum circuits.
We show how in principle to construct analogs of quantum Hall edge states in "photonic crystals" made with non-reciprocal (Faraday-effect) media. These form "one-way waveguides" that allow electromagnetic energy to flow in one direction only.
We report on the experimental study and numerical analysis of chiral light-matter coupling in deterministically fabricated quantum dot (QD) waveguide structures. We apply in-situ electron beam lithography to deterministically integrate single InGaAs/GaAs QDs into GaAs-DBR waveguides to systematically explore the dependence of chiral coupling on the position of the QD inside the waveguide. By a series of micro-photoluminescence measurements, we determine the directionality contrast of emission into left and right traveling waveguide modes revealing a maximum of 0.93 for highly off-center QDs an…
We report on novel exciton-polariton routing devices created to study and purposely guide light-matter particles in their condensate phase. In a co-directional coupling device, two waveguides are connected by a partially etched section which facilitates tunable coupling of the adjacent channels. This evanescent coupling of the two macroscopic wavefunctions in each waveguide reveals itself in real space oscillations of the condensate. This Josephson-like oscillation has only been observed in coupled polariton traps so far. Here, we report on a similar coupling behavior in a controllable, propag…
We introduce a polariton-waveguide structure, comprised of a nanowire-based photonic crystal waveguide with a quantum dot embedded in each unit cell. Using realistic designs and parameters, we derive and calculate the fundamental electromagnetic properties of these polariton waveguides, with an emphasis on the photon Green function and local optical density of states (LDOS). Both infinite and finite-size waveguides are considered, where the latter's properties are calculated using a Dyson equation approach without any approximations. We demonstrate dramatic increases, and rich fundamental cont…
Single-photon emitters integrated into quantum optical circuits will enable new, miniaturized quantum optical devices. Here, we numerically investigate semiconductor quantum dots embedded to low refractive index contrast waveguides. We discuss a model to compute the coupling efficiency of the emitted light field to the fundamental propagation mode of the waveguide, and we optimize the waveguide dimensional parameters for maximum coupling efficiency. Further, we show that for a laterally cropped waveguide the interplay of Purcell-enhancement and optimized field profile can enhance the coupling …
A spin-wave (SW) directional coupler comprised of two laterally parallel nano-scale dipolarly-coupled SW waveguides is proposed and studied using micromagnetic simulations and analytical theory. The energy of a SW excited in one of the waveguides in the course of propagation is periodically transferred to the other waveguide and back, and the spatial half-period of this transfer is defined as the coupling length. The coupling length is determined by the dipolar coupling between the waveguides, and the fraction of the SW energy transferred to the other waveguide at the device output can be vari…
In this study, we examine a photonic wire waveguide embedded with an ensemble of quantum dots that directionally emits into the waveguide depending on the spin state of the ensemble. This is accomplished through the aid of the spin-orbit interaction of light. The waveguide has a two-step stair-like cross section and embeds quantum dots (QDs) only in the upper step, such that the circular polarization of emission from the spin-polarized QDs controls the direction of the radiation. We numerically verify that more than 70% of the radiation from the ensemble emitter is toward a specific direction …
We theoretically investigate the magnitude and range of the photon-mediated interaction between two quantum dots embedded in a photonic crystal waveguide, including fabrication disorder both in the crystal and in the dot positioning. We find that disorder-induced light localization has a drastic effect on the excitation transfer rate - as compared to an ideal structure - and that this rate varies widely among different disorder configurations. Nevertheless, we also find that significant rates of 50 micro-eV at a range of 10 micro-meters can be achieved in realistic systems.
The authors investigate the spontaneous emission dynamics of self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots embedded in GaAs photonic crystal waveguides. For an ensemble of dots coupled to guided modes in the waveguide we report spatially, spectrally, and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, detecting normal to the plane of the photonic crystal. For quantum dots emitting in resonance with the waveguide mode, a ~21x enhancement of photoluminescence intensity is observed as compared to dots in the unprocessed region of the wafer. This enhancement can be traced back to the Purcell enhanced emission …
Switching of a single plasmon interacting with equally spaced quantum dots coupled to one-dimensional surface plasmonic waveguide is investigated theoretically via the real-space approach. We showed that the transmission and reflection of a single plasmon can be switched on or off by dynamically tuning and changing the number of the equal transition frequencies of the quantum dots.
Using the coupled-mode theory in guided-wave optics and electronics, we explore a directional coupling structure composed of two parallel waveguides electrostatically induced by the split-gate technique in bulk graphene. Our results show that Klein tunneling can greatly enhance the coupling strength of the structure. By adjusting a gate voltage, the probability density of Dirac electron wave function initially in one waveguide can be completely transferred into the other waveguide within several hundred nanometers. Our findings could not only lead to functional coherent coupling devices for qu…
We report on the site-selected growth of bright single InAsP quantum dots embedded within InP photonic nanowire waveguides emitting at telecom wavelengths. We demonstrate a dramatic dependence of the emission rate on both the emission wavelength and the nanowire diameter. With an appropriately designed waveguide, tailored to the emission wavelength of the dot, an increase in count rate by nearly two orders of magnitude (0.4kcps to 35kcps) is obtained for quantum dots emitting in the telecom O-band. Using emission-wavelength-optimised waveguides, we demonstrate bright, narrow linewidth emission…
The fundamental process limiting the coherence of quantum-dot based single-photon sources is the interaction with phonons. We study the effect of phonon decoherence on the indistinguishability of single photons emitted from a quantum dot embedded in a suspended nanobeam waveguide. At low temperatures, the indistinguishability is limited by the coupling between the quantum dot and the fundamental vibrational modes of the waveguide and is sensitive to the quantum-dot position within the nanobeam cross-section. We show that this decoherence channel can be efficiently suppressed by clamping the wa…
We report a study of the quantum dot emission in short photonic crystal waveguides. We observe that the quantum dot photoluminescence intensity and decay rate are strongly enhanced when the emission energy is in resonance with Fabry-Perot cavity modes in the slow-light regime of the dispersion curve. The experimental results are in agreement with previous theoretical predictions and further supported by three-dimensional finite element simulation. Our results show that the combination of slow group velocity and Fabry-Perot cavity resonance provides an avenue to efficiently channel photons from…
We theoretically study the spin-wave spectra in magnonic waveguides periodically patterned with square anti-dots in nanoscale with pinned magnetization at the edges. We show that the breaking of the mirror symmetry of the waveguide by the structural changes can result in a magnonic band gap closing. These intrinsic symmetry breaking can be compensated by properly chosen asymmetric external bias magnetic field, i.e. in an extrinsic way. As a result the magnonic gaps existing in the ideal symmetric structure can be recovered. The model used for the explanation also suggests that this idea could …
Spontaneous emission from excitonic transitions in InAs/GaAs quantum dots embedded in photonic crystal waveguides at 5K into non-guided and guided modes is determined by direct hyperspectral imaging. This enables measurement of the absolute coupling efficiency into the guided modes, the beta-factor, directly, without assumptions on decay rates used previously. Notably, we found beta-factors above 90% over a wide spectral range of 40meV in the fast light regime, reaching a maximum of (99 $\pm$ 1)%. We measure the directional emission of the circularly polarized transitions in a magnetic field i…
The coupling between single photon emitters and integrated photonic circuits is an emerging topic relevant for quantum information science and other nanophotonic applications. We investigate the coupling between a hybrid system of colloidal quantum dots and propagating gap modes of a silicon nitride waveguide system. We furthermore explore the density of optical states of the system by using a scanning probe technique and find that the quantum dots couple significantly to the photonic circuit. Our results indicate that a scalable slot-waveguide might serve as a promising platform in future dev…
Photoluminescence spectroscopy of single InAs quantum dots at cryogenic temperatures (~14 K) is performed using a micron-scale optical fiber taper waveguide as a near-field optic. The measured collection efficiency of quantum dot spontaneous emission into the fundamental guided mode of the fiber taper is estimated at 0.1%, and spatially-resolved measurements with ~600 nm resolution are obtained by varying the taper position with respect to the sample and using the fiber taper for both the pump and collection channels.
We report a valley photonic crystal (VPhC) waveguide in a GaAs slab with InAs quantum dots (QDs) as an internal light source exploited for experimental characterization of the waveguide. A topological interface state formed at the interface between two topologically-distinct VPhCs is used as the waveguide mode. We demonstrate robust propagation for near-infrared light emitted from the QDs even under the presence of sharp bends as a consequence of the topological protection of the guided mode. Our work will be of importance for developing robust photonic integrated circuits with small footprint…
We demonstrate the in-plane emission of highly-polarized single photons from an InAs quantum dot embedded into a photonic crystal waveguide. The spontaneous emission rates are Purcell-enhanced by the coupling of the quantum dot to a slow-light mode of the waveguide. Photon-correlation measurements confirm the sub-Poissonian statistics of the in-plane emission. Under optical pulse excitation, single photon emission rates of up to 19 MHz into the guided mode are demonstrated, which corresponds to a device efficiency of 24%. These results herald the monolithic integration of sources in photonic q…
Cavities embedded in photonic crystal waveguides offer a promising route towards large scale integration of coupled resonators for quantum electrodynamics applications. In this letter, we demonstrate a strongly coupled system formed by a single quantum dot and such a photonic crystal cavity. The resonance originating from the cavity is clearly identified from the photoluminescence mapping of the out-of-plane scattered signal along the photonic crystal waveguide. The quantum dot exciton is tuned towards the cavity mode by temperature control. A vacuum Rabi splitting of ~ 140 \mueV is observed a…
We present measurements of the beta-factor, describing the coupling efficiency of light emitted by single InAs/GaAs semiconductor quantum dots into a photonic crystal waveguide mode. The beta-factor is evaluated by means of time-resolved frequency-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy. The emission wavelength of single quantum dots is temperature tuned across the band edge of a photonic crystal waveguide and the spontaneous emission rate is recorded. Decay rates up to 5.7 ns^(-1), corresponding to a Purcell factor of 5.2, are measured and beta-factors up to 85% are extracted. These results …
In the present paper, the collective near-field effects in a two-graphene sheets plasmonic waveguide loaded with an array of Ag$_2$Se quantum dots excited by external radiation are theoretically studied. This research aims to develop a theoretical approach to realizing controllable excitation and the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in planar graphene waveguides. The proposed model is based on the semiclassical description that implies the dispersion equation's solution for SPPs excited in two coupled graphene sheets and the embedded quantum dots' energy spectra analysis. Using…
The quest for an integrated quantum optics platform has motivated the field of semiconductor quantum dot research for two decades. Demonstrations of quantum light sources, single photon switches, transistors, and spin-photon interfaces have become very advanced. Yet the fundamental problem that every quantum dot is different prevents integration and scaling beyond a few quantum dots. Here, we address this challenge by patterning strain via local phase transitions to selectively tune individual quantum dots that are embedded in a photonic architecture. The patterning is implemented with in oper…
Chiral light-matter interaction between photonic nanostructures with quantum emitters shows great potential to implement spin-photon interfaces for quantum information processing. Position-dependent spin momentum locking of the quantum emitter is important for these chiral coupled nanostructures. Here, we report the position-dependent chiral coupling between quantum dots (QDs) and cross waveguides both numerically and experimentally. Four quantum dots distributed at different positions in the cross section are selected to characterize the chiral properties of the device. Directional emission i…
A tunable directional coupler based on Coulomb Blockade effect is presented. Two electron waveguides are coupled by a quantum dot to an injector waveguide. Electron confinement is obtained by surface Schottky gates on single GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction. Magneto-electrical measurements down to 350 mK are presented and large transconductance oscillations are reported on both outputs up to 4.2 K. Experimental results are interpreted in terms of Coulomb Blockade effect and the relevance of the present design strategy for the implementation of an electronic multiplexer is underlined.
Usually, the liner waveguides with single quantum emitters are utilized as routers to construct the quantum network in quantum information processings. Here, we investigate the influence of the nonlinear dispersion on quantum routing of single surface plasmons, between two metal nanowires with a pair of quantum dots. By using a full quantum theory in real space, we obtain the routing probabilities of a single surface plasmon into the four outports of two plasmonic waveguides scattered by a pair of quantum dots. It is shown that, by properly designing the inter-dot distance and the dot-plasmon …
We explore the dynamics and directionality of spontaneous emission from self-assembled In(Ga)As quantum dots into TE-polarised guided modes in GaAs two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides. The local group velocity of the guided waveguide mode is probed, with values as low as $\sim 1.5\%\times c$ measured close to the slow-light band edge. By performing complementary continuous wave and time-resolved measurements with detection along, and perpendicular to the waveguide axis we probe the fraction of emission into the waveguide mode ($β$-factor). For dots randomly positioned within the unit c…
Interfacing single emitters and photonic nanostructures enables modifying their emission properties, such as enhancing individual decay rates or controlling the emission direction. To achieve full control, the single emitter must be positioned in the nanostructures deterministically. Here, we use spectroscopy to gain spectral and spatial information about individual quantum dots in order to position each emitter in a pre-determined location in a unit cell of a photonic-crystal waveguide. Depending on the spatial and spectral positioning within the structured nanophotonic mode, we observe that …
We use an optical fiber taper waveguide to probe PbS quantum dots (QDs) dried on Si photonic crystal cavities near 1.55 $μ$m. We demonstrate that a low density ($\lesssim 100 μ$m$^{-2}$) of QDs does not significantly degrade cavity quality factors as high as $\approx3\times10^4$. We also show that the tapered fiber can be used to excite the QDs and collect the subsequent cavity-filtered photoluminescence, and present measurements of reversible photodarkening and QD saturation. This method represents an important step towards spectroscopy of single colloidal QDs in the telecommunications band.
Future scalable photonic quantum information processing relies on the ability of integrating multiple interacting quantum emitters into a single chip. Quantum dots provide ideal on-chip quantum light sources. However, achieving quantum interaction between multiple quantum dots on-a-chip is a challenging task due to the randomness in their frequency and position, requiring local tuning technique and long-range quantum interaction. Here, we demonstrate quantum interactions between distant two quantum dots on a nanophotonic waveguide. We achieve a photon-mediated long-range interaction by integra…
We demonstrate a scheme for in-plane initialization and readout of a single exciton spin in an InGaAs quantum dot (QD) coupled to a GaAs nanobeam waveguide. The chiral coupling of the QD and the optical mode of the nanobeam enables spin initialization and readout fidelity approaching unity in magnetic field $B=1$ T and $\sim$0.9 without the field. We further show that this in-plane excitation scheme is independent of the incident excitation laser polarization and depends solely on the excitation direction. This scheme provides a robust in-plane spin excitation basis for a photon-mediated spin …
Resonant laser scattering along with photon correlation measurements have established the atom-like character of quantum dots. Here, we present measurements which challenge this identification for a wide range of experimental parameters: the absorption lineshapes that we measure at magnetic fields exceeding 1 Tesla indicate that the nuclear spins polarize by an amount that ensures locking of the quantum dot resonances to the incident laser frequency. In contrast to earlier experiments, this nuclear spin polarization is bi-directional, allowing the electron+nuclear spin system to track the chan…
Waveguide-based spin-photon interfaces on the GaAs platform have emerged as a promising system for a variety of quantum information applications directly integrated into planar photonic circuits. The coherent control of spin states in a quantum dot can be achieved by applying circularly polarized laser pulses that may be coupled into the planar waveguide vertically through radiation modes. However, proper control of the laser polarization is challenging since the polarization is modified through the transformation from the far field to the exact position of the quantum dot in the nanostructure…
We investigate the emission directionality of electronic intraband (intersubband) transitions in stacked coupled quantum dots. Using a well-established eight-band $k \cdot p$ method, we demonstrate that the minor contributions from the valence band mixing into the conduction band govern the polarization and emission directionality of electronic $p$-to-$s$-type intraband transitions. Despite that the contribution from the central-cell part to the momentum matrix element is dominant, we find, the contribution from the matrix elements among the envelope functions cannot be neglected. With the hel…
Using a polaron master equation approach we investigate the resonance fluorescence spectra from coherently driven quantum dots (QDs) coupled to an acoustic phonon bath and a photonic crystal waveguide with a rich local density of photon states (LDOS). Resonance fluorescence spectra from QDs in semiconductor crystals are known to show strong signatures of electron-phonon interactions, but when coupled to a structured photonic reservoir, the QD emission properties are also determined by the frequency dependence of the LDOS of the photon reservoir. Here, we investigate the simultaneous role of co…
We proposed and demonstrated that the nuclear spins of the host lattice in GaAs double quantum dots can be strongly polarized in either of two opposite directions, parallel or antiparallel to an external magnetic field. The direction is selected simply by adjusting the dc source-drain voltage of the device. This nuclear polarization manifests itself by repeated controlled electron-nuclear spin scattering in the Pauli spin blockade state. Polarized nuclei are also controlled coherently by means of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). This work confirmed that the nuclear spins in quantum dots are i…
Transport properties of a single plasmon interacting with a hybrid system composed of a semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) and a metal nanoparticle (MNP) coupled to one-dimensional surface plasmonic waveguide are investigated theoretically via the real-space approach. We considered that the MNP-SQD interaction leads to the formation of a hybrid exciton and the transmission and reflection of a single incident plasmon could be controlled by adjusting the frequency of the classical control field applied to the MNP-SQD hybrid nanosystem, the kinds of metallic nanoparticles and the background media, r…
By using the real-space method, switching of a single plasmon interacting with a hybrid nanosystem composed of a semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) and a metallic nanoparticle (MNP) coupled to one-dimensional surface plasmonic waveguide is investigated theoretically. We discussed that the dipole coupling between an exciton and a localized surface plasmon results in the formation of a hybrid exciton and the transmission and reflection of the propagating single plasmon could be controlled by changing the interparticle distance between the SQD and the MNP and the size of the nanoparticles. The contr…
Scalable quantum technologies require faithful conversion between matter qubits storing the quantum information and photonic qubits carrying the information in integrated circuits and waveguides. We demonstrate that the electromagnetic field chirality which arises in nanophotonic waveguides leads to unidirectional emission from an embedded quantum dot quantum emitter, with resultant in-plane transfer of matter-qubit (spin) information. The chiral behavior occurs despite the non-chiral geometry and material of the waveguides. Using dot registration techniques we achieve a quantum emitter determ…
Many photonic quantum information processing applications would benefit from a high brightness, fiber-coupled source of triggered single photons. Here, we present a fiber-coupled photonic-crystal waveguide single-photon source relying on evanescent coupling of the light field from a tapered out-coupler to an optical fiber. A two-step approach is taken where the performance of the tapered out-coupler is recorded first on an independent device containing an on-chip reflector. Reflection measurements establish that the chip-to-fiber coupling efficiency exceeds 80 %. The detailed characterization …
We consider electron waveguides (quantum wires) in graphene created by suitable inhomogeneous magnetic fields. The properties of uni-directional snake states are discussed. For a certain magnetic field profile, two spatially separated counter-propagating snake states are formed, leading to conductance quantization insensitive to backscattering by impurities or irregularities of the magnetic field.
Establishing a highly efficient photon-emitter interface where the intrinsic linewidth broadening is limited solely by spontaneous emission is a key step in quantum optics. It opens a pathway to coherent light-matter interaction for, e.g., the generation of highly indistinguishable photons, few-photon optical nonlinearities, and photon-emitter quantum gates. However, residual broadening mechanisms are ubiquitous and need to be combated. For solid-state emitters charge and nuclear spin noise is of importance and the influence of photonic nanostructures on the broadening has not been clarified. …
The capability to embed self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) at predefined positions in nanophotonic structures is key to the development of complex quantum photonic architectures. Here, we demonstrate that QDs can be deterministically positioned in nanophotonic waveguides by pre-locating QDs relative to a global reference frame using micro-photoluminescence ($μ$PL) spectroscopy. After nanofabrication, $μ$PL images reveal misalignments between the central axis of the waveguide and the embedded QD of only $(9\pm46$) nm and $(1\pm33$) nm, for QDs embedded in undoped and doped membranes, respectivel…
We present optical investigations of hybrid plasmonic nanosystems consisting of lithographically defined plasmonic Au-waveguides or beamsplitters on GaAs substrates coupled to proximal self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots. We designed a sample structure that enabled us to precisely tune the distance between quantum dots and the sample surface during nano-fabrication and demonstrated that non-radiative processes do not play a major role for separations down to $\sim 10 nm$. A polarized laser beam focused on one end of the plasmonic nanostructure generates propagating surface plasmon polaritons th…
We demonstrate a high-purity source of indistinguishable single photons using a quantum dot embedded in a nanophotonic waveguide. The source features a near-unity internal coupling efficiency and the collected photons are efficiently coupled off-chip by implementing a taper that adiabatically couples the photons to an optical fiber. By quasi-resonant excitation of the quantum dot, we measure a single-photon purity larger than 99.4% and a photon indistinguishability of up to 94+-1% by using p-shell excitation combined with spectral filtering to reduce photon jitter. A temperature-dependent stud…
