Abelian U(1) gauge group extensions of the Standard Model represent one of the most minimal approaches to solve some of the most urgent particle physics questions and provide a rich phenomenology in various experimental searches. In this work, we focus on baryophilic vector mediator models in the MeV-to-GeV mass range and, in particular, present, for the first time, gauge vector field decays into almost arbitrary hadronic final states. Using only very little theoretical approximations, we rigorously follow the vector meson dominance theory in our calculations. We study the effect on the total and partial decay widths, the branching ratios, and not least on the present (future) experimental limits (reach) on (for) the mass and couplings of light vector particles in different models. We compare our results to current results in the literature. Our calculations are publicly available in a python package to compute various vector particle decay quantities in order to describe leptonic as well as hadronic decay signatures for experimental searches.
The MUonE experiment, that aims to provide a precise measurement of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon $g-2$ via elastic muon-electron scattering, has also the potential to explore the parameter space of light new physics. Exploiting the process $μ^- N \to μ^- N X$, where $N$ is the target nucleus and X is a new physics light mediator, we demonstrate that MUonE can be sensitive to new regions of parameter space for sub-GeV dark photons. In particular, thanks to its muon beam, MUonE will be able to explore uncharted parameter space regions for the $L_μ-L_τ$ model. Finally…
We study vector portal dark matter models where the mediator couples only to leptons. In spite of the lack of tree-level couplings to colored states, radiative effects generate interactions with quark fields that could give rise to a signal in current and future experiments. We identify such experimental signatures: scattering of nuclei in dark matter direct detection; resonant production of lepton-antilepton pairs at the Large Hadron Collider; and hadronic final states in dark matter indirect searches. Furthermore, radiative effects also generate an irreducible mass mixing between the vector …
GeV-scale dark matter is an increasingly attractive target for direct detection, indirect detection, and collider searches. Its annihilation into hadronic final states produces a challenging zoo of light hadronic resonances. We update Herwig7 to study the photon and positron spectra from annihilation through a vector mediator. It covers dark matter masses between 250 MeV and 5 GeV and includes an error estimate.
Hadronic showers transfer a relevant amount of their energy to electromagnetic subshowers. We show that the generation of "secondary" dark photons in these sub-showers is significant and typically dominates the production at low dark photon masses. The resulting dark photons are however substantially less energetic than the ones originating from mesons decay. We illustrate this point both semi-analytically and through Monte Carlo simulations. Existing limits on vector-mediator scenarios for light dark matter are updated with the inclusion of the new production processes.
The exchange of a light $t$-channel flavor-changing gauge boson, $\Vp$, with mass $\sim m_{top}$ remains a leading explanation for the anomalous forward backward asymmetry in top quark production at the Tevatron. Unlike other ideas, including heavier $t$-channel mediators, the light $\Vp$ model is not easily seen in the $\mtt$ distribution. We advocate a more promising strategy. While current analyses at hadron colliders may not be sensitive, we propose searching for a $jj$ resonance in association with single top that may allow discovery in existing data. Deviations in the lepton charge asymm…
The $ϕ$ scalar boson is a new mediator proposed to describe the direct light-by-light scattering observed recently in ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) with ATLAS detector where two photons interact directly to gives two photons in the final state. The proposed lagrangian present a description to the forbidden process. The description presented in this paper consist the interaction terms, the coupling to the Higgs boson to generate the mass for this new resonance and the simulation using proton proton in order to observe this process in other nominal LHC collisions, since the process is obser…
Current stage of development of the high-energy elastic diffractive scattering phenomenology is reviewed. Verification of various theoretical models via comparison of their predictions with the recent D0 and TOTEM data on the nucleon-nucleon total and differential cross-sections is presented.
We present a treatment of the high energy scattering of dark Dirac fermions from nuclei, mediated by the exchange of a light vector boson. The dark fermions are produced by proton-nucleus interactions in a fixed target and, after traversing shielding that screens out strongly interacting products, appear similarly to neutrino neutral current scattering in a detector. Using the Fermilab experiment E613 as an example, we place limits on a secluded dark matter scenario. Visible scattering in the detector includes both the familiar regime of large momentum transfer to the nucleus ($Q^2$) described…
We consider experimental limits on colour triplet fermions that decay dominantly to three jets via a scalar mediator that can be on- or off-shell. These fermions arise in top-partner models that can solve the hierarchy problem, and limits on this scenario are weaker than those on traditional top-partner models because of the messy all-hadronic final state with significant backgrounds. We do find, however, that while there are no dedicated searches for this scenario, especially in case of an on-shell mediator, the suite of LHC all-hadronic searches still constrains a significant portion of the …
We extend a quantum kinetic approach to the description of hadronic showers in space, time and momentum space to deep-inelastic $ep$ collisions, with particular reference to experiments at HERA. We follow the history of hard scattering events back to the initial hadronic state and forward to the formation of colour-singlet pre-hadronic clusters and their decays into hadrons. The time evolution of the space-like initial-state shower and the time-like secondary partons are treated similarly, and cluster formation is treated using a spatial criterion motivated by confinement and a non-perturbativ…
The search for singlet fermion dark matter at high-energy colliders is commonly analyzed with a singlet scalar mediator, which however violates the standard model (SM) gauge invariance, renormalizability and unitarity. These problems can be cured by introducing a mixing between the singlet scalar $s$ and the SM Higgs boson $h$. Thus one has to consider two scalar mediators $h_1$ and $h_2$, where $h_1$ is identified as the discovered 125 GeV Higgs boson. As a specific example, we consider the dark matter (DM) search in the $t \bar{t} + E_{T}^{\text{miss}}$ channel. According to the masses of da…
The use of simplified models as a tool for interpreting dark matter collider searches has become increasingly prevalent, and while early Run II results are beginning to appear, we look to see what further information can be extracted from the Run I dataset. We consider three `standard' simplified models that couple quarks to fermionic singlet dark matter: an $s$-channel vector mediator with vector or axial-vector couplings, and a $t$-channel scalar mediator. Upper limits on the couplings are calculated and compared across three alternate channels, namely mono-jet, mono-$Z$ (leptonic) and mono-…
The ultraviolet structure of $s$-channel mediator dark matter simplified models at hadron colliders is considered. In terms of commonly studied $s$-channel mediator simplified models it is argued that at arbitrarily high energies the perturbative description of dark matter production in high energy scattering at hadron colliders will break down in a number of cases. This is analogous to the well documented breakdown of an EFT description of dark matter collider production. With this in mind, to diagnose whether or not the use of simplified models at the LHC is valid, perturbative unitarity of …
The QCD analysis of hadronic tau decays is reviewed and a summary of the present phenomenological status is presented. The following topics are discussed: the determination of alpha_s(m_tau) = 0.338 +- 0.012 from the inclusive tau hadronic width, the measurement of |V_us| through the Cabibbo-suppressed decays of the tau, and the extraction of chiral-perturbation-theory couplings from the spectral tau data.
A review of the recent results obtained in the Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio model is given. In particular, the effect of screening of meson fields at finite temperature or density is analyzed and the formulation of a chirally invariant transport theory for quark matter is presented.
We investigate the possible presence of dark matter (DM) in massive and rotating neutron stars (NSs). For the purpose we extend our previous work [1] to introduce a light new physics vector mediator besides a scalar one in order to ensure feeble interaction between fermionic DM and $β$ stable hadronic matter in NSs. The masses of DM fermion, the mediators and the couplings are chosen consistent with the self-interaction constraint from Bullet cluster and from present day relic abundance. Assuming that both the scalar and vector mediators contribute equally to the relic abundance, we compute th…
We explore scenarios where the $R(D^{(*)})$ anomalies arise from semitauonic decays to a right-handed sterile neutrino. We perform an EFT study of all five simplified models capable of generating at tree-level the lowest dimension electroweak operators that give rise to this decay. We analyze their compatibility with current $R(D^{(*)})$ data and other relevant hadronic branching ratios, and show that one simplified model is excluded by this analysis. The remainder are compatible with collider constraints on the mediator semileptonic branching ratios, provided the mediator mass is of order TeV…
The LHCb detector provides accurate vertex reconstruction and hadronic particle identification, which make the experiment an ideal place to look for light long-lived particles (LLP) decaying into Standard Model (SM) hadrons. In contrast with the typical search strategy relying on energetic jets and a high multiplicity of tracks from the LLP decay, LHCb can identify LLPs in exclusive, specific hadronic final states. To illustrate the idea, we study the sensitivity of LHCb to an exotic Higgs decay $h\to SS$, followed by the displaced decay of GeV-scale scalars into charged kaons $S\to K^+K^-$. W…
We investigate the effect of feeble interaction of dark matter (DM) with hadronic matter on the equation of state (EoS) and structural properties of neutron stars (NSs) in static conditions. For the purpose we adopt the effective chiral model for the hadronic sector and for the first time in the context of possible existence of DM inside NSs, we introduce DM-SM interaction through light new physics mediator. Moreover, the mass of DM fermion, the mediator and the coupling are adopted from the self-interaction constraint from Bullet cluster and from present day relic abundance. Within the consid…
We provide a simple Regge parametrization of forward hadronic scattering from the multi-TeV range down to approximately 1 GeV above the threshold of each reaction. We show how, at these relatively low energies, mass effects are relevant and should be properly taken into account, and that the data favor a logarithmic growth of the Pomeron contribution that is based on an improved unitarity bound at intermediate energies as well as a separate factorization of the singularities. Data on both the imaginary and real parts of amplitudes are remarkably well described with this parametrization. Here w…
If dark matter interacts with quarks or gluons, the mediator of these interactions is either directly accessible at the LHC or is so heavy that its effects are encoded in contact operators. We find that the self-consistency of a contact operator description at the LHC implies bounds on the mediator scale stronger than those found from missing energy searches. This translates into spin-independent elastic scattering cross-sections at a level < 10^-41 cm^2, with direct implications for the DAMA, CoGeNT, and CRESST-II anomalies. We then carefully explore the potential of monojet searches in the l…
Since a number of years the QGSJET model has been successfully used by different groups in the field of high energy cosmic rays. Current work is devoted to the first general update of the model. The key improvement is connected to an account for non-linear interaction effects which are of crucial importance for reliable model extrapolation into ultra-high energy domain. The proposed formalism allows to obtain a consistent description of hadron-hadron cross sections and hadron structure functions and to treat non-linear effects explicitely in individual hadronic and nuclear collisions. Other am…
The subject of this work is the analysis of hadronic decays of the exotic meson $π_{1}$ in a fully relativistic formalism, and comparison with the nonrelativistic results. The relativistic spin wave functions of mesons and hybrids are constructed based on unitary representations of the Lorentz group. The radial wave functions are obtained from phenomenological considerations of the mass operator. We find that the decay channels $πb_{1}$ and $πf_{1}$ are favored, in agreement with the results obtained using other models, thus indicating some model independence of the S+P selection rules.
The structure of the form factors stemmed from the hadronization of QCD currents in the energy region of the resonances can be explored through the analyses of exclusive hadronic decays of the tau lepton. I give a short review on the later theoretical progress achieved in the description of experimental data.
Exotic mesons are striking predictions of quantum chromodynamics that go beyond the quark model. They can provide great insight into understanding phenomena such as asymptotic freedom, confinement, and dynamical symmetry breaking. This work analyzes hadronic decays of exotic mesons, with a focus on the lightest one, the $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ $π_{1}$, in a fully relativistic formalism. The relativistic spin wave functions of normal and exotic mesons are constructed based on unitary representations of the Poincare group. The radial wave functions are obtained from phenomenological considerations of th…
We extend our proposal that major universality classes of hadronic matter can be understood, and in favorable cases calculated, directly in the microscopic quark variables, to allow for splitting between strange and light quark masses. A surprisingly simple but apparently viable picture emerges, featuring essentially three phases, distinguished by whether strangeness is conserved (standard nuclear matter), conserved modulo two (hypernuclear matter), or locked to color (color flavor locking). These are separated by sharp phase transitions. There is also, potentially, a quark phase matching hadr…
A new light gauge boson $U$ may have both vector and axial couplings. In a large class of theories however, the new $U(1)$ current $J^μ_F$ naturally combines with the weak neutral current $J^μ_{Z_{\rm sm}}$, both parity-violating, into a vectorial current $J^μ_U$, combination of the $B,\,L$ and electromagnetic currents with a possible dark matter current. $U^μ$ may be expressed equivalently as $\cosξ\,C^μ\! + \sin ξ\,Z^μ_{\rm \,sm}$ ("mixing with the $Z$") or $(1/\cosχ) \,\hat C^μ+\tanχ\,A^μ$ ("mixing with the photon"), with $\hat C$ coupled to $B,\,L$ and dark matter. The $U$ boson may be vie…
In the framework of precision experiments, the search for electric dipole moments and the precise determination of magnetic dipole moments (g-2) have since long been of prime interest. Hadronic decays offer the best accuracy, since only the kinematic information carried by a single neutrino per decay is lost. Thus, they reveal more easily precious information on the helicity of the initial tau lepton. However, in contrast to one- or two-body hadronic final states, the description of hadronic multi-body final states depends on the model for the hadronic current. In this work, we determine how t…
We discuss the importance of the axialvector meson in chiral phase transition at finite temperature. We show that there exists a significant contribution in the vector spectral function from the axialvector meson through the vector-axialvector mixing in hot matter.
We attempt to build a model that describes the {\it Fermi} galactic gamma-ray excess (FGCE) within a UV-complete Supersymmetric framework; we find this to be highly non-trivial. At the very least a successful Supersymmetric explanation must have several important ingredients in order to fit the data and satisfy other theoretical and experimental constraints. Under the assumption that a {\it single} annihilation mediator is responsible for both the observed relic density as well as the FGCE, we show that the requirements are not easily satisfied in many TeV-scale SUSY models, but can be met wit…
Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is the theory of the strong interactions. We review descriptions of hadronic systems motivated by QCD, analyzing the recent controversy between gluonic and bosonic degrees of freedom under the prism of the Cheshire Cat Principle. Our analysis leads to an optimal scheme to study hadronic properties. We proceed to extend this low energy descriptions to the deep inelastic regime.
We construct an expression for a general lepton flavour universality (LFU) ratio, $R_{X}$, in $b\to s l^+ l^-$ decays in terms of a series of hadronic quantities which can be treated as nuisance parameters. This expression allows to include any LFU ratio in global fits of $b\to s l^+ l^-$ short-distance parameters, even in the absence of a precise knowledge of the corresponding hadronic structure. The absence of sizeable LFU violation and the approximate left-handed structure of the Standard Model amplitude imply that only a very limited set of hadronic parameters hamper the sensitivity of $R_…
We apply an analytic description to the inclusive decay of the $τ$ lepton. We argue that this method gives not only a self-consistent description of the process both in the timelike region by using the initial expression for $R_τ$ and in the spacelike domain by using the analytic properties of the hadronic correlator, but also leads to the fact that theoretical uncertainties associated with unknown higher-loop contributions and renormalization scheme dependence can be reduced dramatically.
A quantitative description of the qualitative feature of multi-hadron final states known as the "number of jets" is given by a sequence of infrared finite shape observables (jet discriminators) that: take continuous values between 0 and 1; are stable-unlike clustering algorithms-against small variations of the input (data errors, Sudakov effects etc.); have a form of multiparticle correlators that is natural in the context of quantum field theory and hence are better suited for a systematic study of theoretical uncertainties (logarithmic and power corrections).
Within the independent-harmonic-oscillator model for quarks inside a hadron, a rigorous method is presented for the calculation of coupling constants and transition potentials for hadronic decay, as needed in a multi-channel description of mesons.
The commonly used West and Yennie model approach to the description of the interference between Coulomb and hadronic scattering of nucleons is critically examined and its deficiencies are clarified. The preference of the more general eikonal model approach is summarized.
A short review of our recent work on amplitude parametrizations of three-body hadronic weak $B$ and $D$ decays is presented. The final states are here composed of three light mesons, namely the various charge $πππ$, $Kππ$ and $KK\bar K$ states. These parametrizations are derived from previous calculations based on a quasi-two-body factorization approach where the two-body hadronic final state interactions are fully taken into account in terms of unitary $S$- and $P$-wave $ππ$, $πK$ and $K \bar K$ form factors. They are an alternative to the isobar-model description and can be useful in the int…
With a quark level interaction, we give a unified description of the loosely bound molecular systems composed of the heavy flavor hadrons $(\bar{D},\bar{D}^*)$, $(Λ_c, Σ_c, Σ_c^*)$, and $(Ξ_c, Ξ_c^\prime,Ξ_c^*)$. Using the $P_c$ states as inputs to fix the interaction strength of light quark-quark pairs, we reproduce the observed $P_{cs}$ and $T_{cc}^+$ states and predict another narrow $T_{cc}^{\prime+}$ state with quantum numbers $[D^*D^*]_{J=1}^{I=0}$. If we require a satisfactory description of the $T_{cc}^+$ and $P_c$ states simultaneously, our framework prefers the assignments of the $P_…
In the present work, we investigate subsequential production of three kaons and $Ω^-$ baryon based on an effective Lagrangian approach. We only consider the intermediate states with the light mass baryon to suggest the minimum of the total cross section. Coupling constants for verteces of meson-octet baryons are fixed from the empirical data and/or quark models together with SU(3) symmetry considerations and these for meson-decouplet are predicted not only quark model but also Chiral-quark soliton model calculation. Gauge invariance of the resulting amplitude is maintained by introducing the c…
We analyse the constraints on models of WIMP Dark Matter that can be derived from upper bounds on the "monojet" cross section at the LHC. These constraints were originally interpreted in the context of an effective field theory (EFT) where the Standard Model is extended by a dimension--6 operator whose coefficient is $1/Λ^2$. We show that combining the 8 TeV data of the ATLAS and CMS collaborations improves the bounds only slightly. We then analyze this final state in the context of simplified models with $s-$channel mediator. We show that if the decay width of the mediator is small, these sim…
We investigate the hadron-hadron total cross sections at high energies in the framework of holographic QCD. In our model setup, the involved strong interaction is described by the Brower-Polchinski-Strassler-Tan Pomeron exchange kernel, and the two form factors are obtained from the bottom-up AdS/QCD models. We show that the resulting nucleon-nucleon total cross section is consistent with the experimental data recently measured by the TOTEM collaboration at the LHC. As examples to see the general versatility of the model, we also present our analysis on the pion-nucleon and pion-pion cases, wh…
The thermal description of light nuclei at the chemical freeze-out has been investigated. First, I have verified the equilibration of the light nuclei and then introduced a new method to investigate the light nuclei formation. One can study the proximity between the phase space density of light nuclei ratios and their hadronic constituents e.g $\bar{d}/d$ and $(\bar{p}\bar{n}/pn)$. I have found that with the exclusion of the decay feed-down from the hadronic yields in the thermal model, the hadronic representations have good agreement with the light nuclei ratios. I have performed a similar an…
We expose the current experimental and theoretical situation of the interesting case of the production of phi mesons in up to very high energy collisions of hadrons on both nucleon and nuclear targets, and we present a quantitavely good theoretical description of the corresponding experimental data, based on the formalism of the well established Quark-Gluon String Model, that has proved to be valid for a wide energy range. All the available experimental data for phi-meson production in hadron-nucleon collisions on the spectra of secondary phi, and on the ratios of phi/pi(-) and phi/K(-) produc…
We summarize the theoretical description of charmonium and bottonium production in hadronic collisions and compare it to the available data from hadron-nucleon interactions. With the parameters of the theory established by these data, we obtain predictions for quarkonium production at RHIC and LHC energies.
We present in this paper a calculation of the hadronic flux in the atmosphere. Using an iterative leading particle model and the Glauber model, we relate the moment of the leading particle distribution in nucleon-air collisions with the respective one in nucleon-proton collisions. In this way, we obtain a description of the nucleonic and hadronic fluxes in the atmosphere. Contribution to the 26th International Cosmic Ray Conference, Salt Lake City - Utah, August 1999 (HE 1.2.20).
The lattice QCD data of pressure and the energy density have been used to extract the hadronic radius parameter of the excluded volume hadron resonance gas (EVHRG) model. The equation of state can be described well with the extracted radius parameter $R_h= 0.15$ fm. Specific heat is also calculated in the EVHRG model. Further, two new universal descriptions of chemical freeze-out parameters have been introduced based on pressure and specific heat respectively. It is shown that the chemical freeze-out parameters obtained at various $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ in ideal HRG model approximately correspond to …
We discuss a model for soft gluon re-summation based on a statistical description of independent emissions during inelastic collisions. The model is applied to estimate Survival Probabilities at the LHC. A comparison with other models and experimental data is presented.
The Regge description of forward hadronic scattering is extended from $\sim1\gev$ above each threshold up to the multi TeV range. This is achieved with a simple parametrization, that includes mass effects, a logarithmic growth based on an improved unitarity bound at intermediate energies and a separate factorization of singularities. This parametrization can be easily implemented for phenomenological use, but also sheds light on subdominant trajectories and the Pomeron logarithmic growth law.
In this paper we revisit the double vector meson production in $γγ$ interactions at heavy ion collisions and present, by the first time, predictions for the $ρρ$ and $J/ΨJ/Ψ$ production in proton -- nucleus and proton -- proton collisions. In order to obtain realistic predictions for rapidity distributions and total cross sections for the double vector production in ultra peripheral hadronic collisions we take into account of the description of $γγ\rightarrow VV$ cross section at low energies as well as its behaviour at large energies, associated to the gluonic interaction between the color di…
