We consider experimental limits on colour triplet fermions that decay dominantly to three jets via a scalar mediator that can be on- or off-shell. These fermions arise in top-partner models that can solve the hierarchy problem, and limits on this scenario are weaker than those on traditional top-partner models because of the messy all-hadronic final state with significant backgrounds. We do find, however, that while there are no dedicated searches for this scenario, especially in case of an on-shell mediator, the suite of LHC all-hadronic searches still constrains a significant portion of the parameter space. In particular, we find that searches for pair production of di-jet and tri-jet resonances are complementary, covering different regions of parameter space. We also find that if the final state is rich in b-jets, current limits do not change significantly relative to the scenario with all light jets, and we describe how modifications of current search strategies can improve limits in that case.
This work presents an interpretation of high precision jet data from the ATLAS experiment in terms of exclusion limits for new coloured matter. To this end, the effect of a new coloured fermion with a mass $m_X$ on the solution of the renormalization group equation QCD is studied. Theoretical predictions for the transverse energy-energy correlation function and its asymmetry are obtained with such a modified solution and, from the comparison to data, 95\% CL exclusion limits are set on such models.
The Large Hadron Collider experiments are probing the evolution of the strong coupling $α_s$ up to the TeV scale. We show how the ratio of 3- to 2-jets cross sections is affected by the presence of new physics and argue that it can be used to place a model-independent bound on new particles carrying QCD color charge. The current data potentially constrains such states to be heavier than a few hundred GeVs.
We investigate the signatures at the Large Hadron Collider of a minimal model where the dark matter particle is a Majorana fermion that couples to the Standard Model via one or several coloured mediators. We emphasize the importance of the production channel of coloured scalars through the exchange of a dark matter particle in the t-channel, and perform a dedicated analysis of searches for jets and missing energy for this model. We find that the collider constraints are highly competitive compared to direct detection, and can even be considerably stronger over a wide range of parameters. We al…
We show that Jet Energy Correlation variables can be used effectively to discover and distinguish a wide variety of boosted light dijet resonances at the LHC through sensitivity to their transverse momentum and color structures.
I investigate the sensitivity of future hadron colliders to di-jet resonances arising from Z' or coloron models. The projected discovery potential and exclusion limits for these resonances is presented in the coupling vs. mass plane, which highlights both the increased mass reach from higher energy machines as well as the improved coupling sensivity from larger luminosity.
Possible spin-3/2 quark resonances would have a significant effect on high E$_{\mbox{\rm t}}$ jet production through their contribution to the subprocess $q+{\bar q}\rightarrow g+g$. Such enhancements are compared to a, recently reported, anomaly in inclusive jet production at the CDF detector.
The LHC is the perfect environment for the study of new physics in the top quark sector. We study the possibility of detecting signals of heavy color-octet vector resonances, through the charge asymmetry, in top-antitop+jet events. Besides contributions with the top-antitop pair in a color-singlet state, the asymmetry gets also contributions which are proportional to the color factor f_{abc}^2. This process is particularly interesting for extra-dimensional models, where the inclusive charge asymmetry generated by Kaluza-Klein excitations of the gluon vanishes at the tree level. We find that th…
A new heavy di-jet resonance could be discovered at the 14 TeV LHC. In this talk we present a strategy to reveal the nature of such a particle; in particular to discern whether it is a quark-antiquark (q qbar), quark-gluon (qg), or gluon-gluon (gg) resonance. The strategy is based on the study of the energy profiles of the two leading jets in the di-jet channel. Including statistical uncertainties in the signal and the QCD backgrounds, we show that one can distinguish between gg, qg, and q bar resonances; an evaluation of systematic uncertainties in the measurement of the jet energy profile wi…
The event topology in relativistic heavy ion collisions is determined by various multi-particle production mechanisms. The simultaneous model treatment of different collective nuclear effects at high energies (such as a hard multi-parton fragmentation in hot QCD-matter, thermal resonance production, hydrodynamical flows, etc.) is actual but rather complicated task. We discuss the simulation of the above effects by means of Monte-Carlo model HYDJET++.
We consider a vector-like gauge theory of fermions that confines at the multi-TeV scale, and that realizes the Higgs particle as a composite Goldstone boson. The weak interactions are embedded in the unbroken subgroup $Sp(4)$ of a spontaneously broken $SU(4)$ flavour group. The meson resonances appear as poles in the two-point correlators of fermion bilinears, and include the Goldstone bosons plus a massive pseudoscalar $η'$, as well as scalars, vectors and axial vectors. We compute the mass spectrum of these mesons, as well as their decay constants, in the chiral limit, in the approximation w…
We study hypothetical gauge bosons that may produce dijet resonances at the LHC. Simple renormalizable models include leptophobic Z' bosons or colorons that have flavor-independent couplings and decay into a color-singlet or -octet quark-antiquark pair, respectively. We present the experimental results on dijet resonances at hadron colliders as limits in the coupling-versus-mass plane of a gauge boson associated with baryon number. This theoretical framework facilitates a direct comparison of dijet resonance searches performed at different center-of-mass energies or at different colliders.
Anticipating that a di-jet resonance could be discovered at the 14 TeV LHC, we present two different strategies to reveal the nature of such a particle; in particular to discern whether it is a quark-antiquark (qqbar), quark-gluon (qg), or gluon-gluon (gg) resonance. The first method relies on the color discriminant variable, which can be calculated at the LHC from the measurements of the di-jet signal cross section, the resonance mass and the resonance width. Including estimated statistical uncertainties and experimental resolution, we show that a qg excited quark resonance can be efficiently…
We study the prospects for LHC discovery of a narrow resonance that decays to two Higgs bosons, using the final state of two photons and two bottom jets. Our work is motivated in part by a scenario in which two-body flavor-preserving decays of the top squark are kinematically forbidden. Stoponium, a hadronic bound state of the top squark and its anti-particle, will then form, and may have a large branching fraction into the two Higgs boson final state. We estimate the cross-section needed for a 5-sigma discovery at the 14 TeV LHC for such a narrow di-Higgs resonance, using the invariant mass d…
In this work we reappraise the collider constraints from leptonic final states on the vectorlike colored top partners taking into account the impact of exotic colored vector resonances. These colored states are intrinsic to a broad class of models that employ a strongly interacting sector to drive electroweak symmetry breaking. We translate the recent results in the {\sl monolepton + jets} channel as reported by CMS with an integrated luminosity of 35.8 fb$^{-1}$, and {\sl dilepton + jets} and {\sl trilepton + jets} channels as reported by ATLAS with an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ …
An overview of the searches for heavy resonances that decay to leptons or quarks is presented. The results are based on the data collected by the ATLAS and CMS experiments in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13~\textrm{TeV}$, and include for the first time the entire LHC Run 2 data set.
New light scalar particles in the mass range of hundreds of GeV, decaying into a pair of $W/Z$ bosons can appear in several extensions of the SM. The focus of collider studies for such a scalar is often on its direct production, where the scalar is typically only mildly boosted. The observed $W/Z$ are therefore well-separated, allowing analyses for the scalar resonance in a standard fashion as a low-mass diboson resonance. In this work we instead focus on the scenario where the direct production of the scalar is suppressed, and it is rather produced via the decay of a significantly heavier (a …
We apply novel jet techniques to investigate the spin and CP quantum numbers of a heavy resonance X, singly produced in pp -> X -> ZZ -> l(+)l(-)jj at the LHC. We take into account all dominant background processes to show that this channel, which has been considered unobservable until now, can qualify under realistic conditions to supplement measurements of the purely leptonic decay channels X -> ZZ -> 4l. We perform a detailed investigation of spin- and CP-sensitive angular observables on the fully-simulated final state for various spin and CP quantum numbers of the state X, tracing how pote…
Many new physics models predict resonances with masses in the TeV range which decay into a pair of top quarks. With its large cross section, t-bar t production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) offers an excellent opportunity to search for such particles. We present a detailed study of the discovery potential of the CERN Large Hadron Collider for Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations of the gluon in bulk Randall-Sundrum (RS) models in the t-bar t -> ell^+/- nu b-bar bq-bar q' (ell=e, mu) final state. We utilize final states with one or two tagged b-quarks, and two, three or four jets (including b-jet…
We present a model-independent study aimed at characterizing the nature of possible resonances in the jet-photon or jet-$Z$ final state at hadron colliders. Such resonances are expected in many models of compositeness and would be a clear indication of new physics. At leading order, in the narrow width approximation, the matrix elements are parameterized by just a few constants describing the coupling of the various helicities to the resonance. We present the full structure of such amplitudes up to spin two and use them to simulate relevant kinematic distributions that could serve to constrain…
If a new high-mass resonance is discovered at the Large Hadron Collider, model-independent techniques to identify the production mechanism will be crucial to understand its nature and effective couplings to Standard Model particles. We present a powerful and model-independent method to infer the initial state in the production of any high-mass color-singlet system by using a tight veto on accompanying hadronic jets to divide the data into two mutually exclusive event samples (jet bins). For a resonance of several hundred GeV, the jet binning cut needed to discriminate quark and gluon initial s…
The ATLAS and CMS collaborations recently reported a mild excess in the diphoton final state pointing to a resonance with a mass of around 750 GeV and a potentially large width. We consider the possibility of a scalar resonance being produced via gluon fusion and decaying to electroweak gauge bosons, jets and pairs of invisible particles, stable at collider scales. We compute limits from monojet searches on such a resonance and test their compatibility with the requirement for a large width. We also study whether the stable particle can be a a dark matter candidate and investigate the correspo…
We demonstrate that in supersymmetry (SUSY) with relatively light top superpartners, h -> bb can be a very promising channel to discover the SM-like Higgs resonance at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), although in general contexts it is thought to be challenging because of its huge QCD background. In this scenario, the SM-like Higgs boson is mainly produced via cascade decays initiated by pair-produced stop or sbottom squarks. The good sensitivity to h -> bb owes a great deal to the application of multiple (>= 4) b-jet tagging in removing the QCD background, and color-flow variables for reconst…
The CMS collaboration has recently conducted a search for trijet resonances in multi-jet events at the LHC. Motivated in part by this analysis, we examine the phenomenology of exotic particles transforming under higher representations of SU(3) color, focusing on those representations which intrinsically prohibit decays to fewer than three jets. We determine the LHC discovery reach for a particle transforming in a representation of this sort and discuss several additional theoretical and phenomenological constraints which apply to such a particle. Furthermore, we demonstrate that such a particl…
Motivated by the di-photon resonance recently reported by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at $\sqrt{s} =13$ TeV, we interpret the resonance as a scalar boson $X (750)$ in hidden-valley-like models. The scalar boson $X$ can mix with the standard model Higgs boson and thus can be produced via gluon fusion. It then decays into a pair of very light hidden particles $Y$ of sub-GeV, each of which in turn decays to a pair of collimated $ π^{0} $'s, and these two $ π^{0} $'s decay into photons which then form photon-jets. A photon-jet ($ γ$-jet) is a special feature that consists of a cluster of coll…
We present a complete calculation of the electroweak O(alpha^3 alpha_s) corrections to three-jet production and related event-shape observables at electron--positron colliders. The Z-boson resonance is described within the complex-mass scheme, rendering the calculation valid both in the resonance and off-shell regions. Higher-order initial-state radiation is included in the leading-logarithmic approximation. We properly account for the corrections to the total hadronic cross section and for the experimental photon isolation criteria. To this end we implement contributions of the quark-to-photo…
A method is introduced for distinguishing top jets (boosted, hadronically decaying top quarks) from light quark and gluon jets using jet substructure. The procedure involves parsing the jet cluster to resolve its subjets, and then imposing kinematic constraints. With this method, light quark or gluon jets with pT ~ 1 TeV can be rejected with an efficiency of around 99% while retaining up to 40% of top jets. This reduces the dijet background to heavy t-tbar resonances by a factor of ~10,000, thereby allowing resonance searches in t-tbar to be extended into the all-hadronic channel. In addition,…
The reaction $e^+e^-$ annihilation into three jets was recently computed for massive quarks at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. We discuss some results of our calculation for b jets produced at the Z resonance.
We explore the method of using the measured jet activity associated with a high mass resonance state to determine the corresponding production modes. To demonstrate the potential of the approach, we consider the case of a resonance of mass $M_R$ decaying to a diphoton final state. We perform a Monte Carlo study, considering three mass points $M_R=0.75,\,1.5\,,2.5$ TeV, and show that the $γγ$, $WW$, $gg$ and light and heavy $q\overline{q}$ initiated cases lead to distinct predictions for the jet multiplicity distributions. As an example, we apply this result to the ATLAS search for resonances i…
Among various models to explain the $750$ GeV diphoton resonance hinted at the LHC Run 2, a class of models where the resonance decays not into a pair of photons but into a pair of photon-jets is gathering definite attention. In this paper, we study how well we can distinguish the di-photon-jet resonance from the diphoton resonance by examining detector responses to the photon-jets. We find that the sum of $p_T$ of the first $e^+e^-$ pair from the photon conversion provides strong discrimination power. We also discuss determination of the lifetime of the light intermediate particle by measurin…
Strongly coupled models at the TeV scale often predict one or more neutral spin-one resonances (Z') which have appreciable branching fractions to electroweak bosons, namely the Higgs and longitudinal W and Z. These resonances are usually believed to have multi-TeV mass due to electroweak precision constraints, placing them on the edge of LHC discovery reach. Searching for them is made particularly challenging because hadronically decaying electroweak bosons produced at such high energy will appear very similar to QCD jets. In this work we revisit the possibility of discovering these resonances…
The Monte Carlo HYDJET++ model, that contains both hydrodynamic state and jets, is applied to study the influence of the interplay between soft and hard processes on the formation of the elliptic flow in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. Jets are found to cease the hydro-like increase of the elliptic flow with rising p_T. Since jets are more influential at LHC than at RHIC, the v_2 at LHC should be weaker than that at RHIC. Violation of the number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) scaling is predicted. The decays of resonances are found to enhance the low-p_T part of the elliptic flow of…
Searches for new hadronic resonances typically focus on high-mass spectra, due to overwhelming QCD backgrounds and detector trigger rates. We present a study of searches for relatively low-mass hadronic resonances at the LHC in the case that the resonance is boosted by recoiling against a well-measured high-$p_{\textrm{T}}$ probe such as a muon, photon or jet. The hadronic decay of the resonance is then reconstructed either as a single large-radius jet or as a resolved pair of standard narrow-radius jets, balanced in transverse momentum to the probe. We show that the existing 2015 LHC dataset …
New TeV-scale physics processes at the LHC can produce Higgs bosons with substantive transverse Lorentz boost, such that the Higgs's decay products are nominally contained in a single jet. In the case of a light Higgs decaying predominantly to bb, previous studies have shown that these Higgs-jets can be identified by capitalizing on jet substructure techniques. In this work, we explore the possibility of also utilizing the subdominant but very distinctive decay h -> tau tau. To this end, we introduce the concept of a ``ditau-jet,'' or a jet consisting of two semi-collinear taus where one or bo…
Formation and evolution of the elliptic flow pattern in Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt{s}=5.5 ATeV and in Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s}=200 AGeV are analyzed for different hadron species within the framework of HYDJET++ Monte-Carlo model. The model contains both hydrodynamic state and jets, thus allowing for a study of the interplay between the soft and hard processes. It is found that jets are terminating the rise of the elliptic flow with increasing transverse momentum. Since jets are more influential at LHC compared to RHIC, the elliptic flow at LHC should be weaker than that at RHIC. The influence…
We show how the recently proposed XCone jet algorithm smoothly interpolates between resolved and boosted kinematics. When using standard jet algorithms to reconstruct the decays of hadronic resonances like top quarks and Higgs bosons, one typically needs separate analysis strategies to handle the resolved regime of well-separated jets and the boosted regime of fat jets with substructure. XCone, by contrast, is an exclusive cone jet algorithm that always returns a fixed number of jets, so jet regions remain resolved even when (sub)jets are overlapping in the boosted regime. In this paper, we pe…
Hadron collider signatures of new physics are investigated in which a primary resonance is produced that decays to a secondary resonance by emitting a W-boson, with the secondary resonance decaying to two jets. This topology can arise in supersymmetric theories with R-parity violation where the lightest supersymmetric particles are either a pair of squarks, or a slepton - sneutrino pair. The resulting signal can have a cross section consistent with the Wjj observation reported by the CDF collaboration, while remaining consistent with earlier constraints. Other observables that can be used to c…
At the LHC, tagging boosted heavy particle resonances which decay hadronically, such as top quarks and Higgs bosons, can play an essential role in new physics searches. In events with high multiplicity, however, the standard approach to tag boosted resonances by a large-radius fat jet becomes difficult because the resonances are not well-separated from other hard radiation. In this paper, we propose a different approach to tag and reconstruct boosted resonances by using the recently proposed mass-jump jet algorithm. A key feature of the algorithm is the flexible radius of the jets, which resul…
We study the theory and some experimental hints of ultraheavy resonances at the LHC. The production of an ultraheavy narrow particle may have a larger rate than the QCD background even when the final state includes only hadronic jets. We consider two classes of models that lead to 4-jet signals. In the first class a diquark scalar decays into two vectorlike quarks. In the second one a coloron decays into two color-octet scalars or into a pair of vectorlike quarks. We show that a diquark as heavy as 11.5 TeV, or a coloron as heavy as 8.5 TeV may be discovered at the LHC. We point out that a CMS…
Heavy vector-like quarks coupled to a scalar $S$ will induce a coupling of this scalar to gluons and possibly (if electrically charged) photons. The decay of the heavy quark into $Sq$, with $q$ being a Standard Model quark, provides, if kinematically allowed, new channels for heavy quark searches. Inspired by naturalness considerations, we consider the case of a vector-like partner of the top quark. For illustration, we show that a singlet partner can be searched for at the 13$\,$TeV LHC through its decay into a scalar resonance in the $2γ+\ell + X$ final states, especially if the diphoton bra…
We suggest that the anomalous 4-jet events recently reported by ALEPH may be the first indication of low scale technicolour. According to our interpretation about half of the events are due to resonantly enhanced pair production of charged technipions, of mass around 55 GeV, each decaying into a pair of jets, the other half being due to standard processes. The resonant enhancement is due to a nearby technirho resonance in the mass range 150-200 GeV, leading to hugely enhanced signals at the forthcoming LEP run at $\sqrt{s}=160$ GeV since the CM energy would be closer to the peak of the resonan…
We investigate the collider phenomenology of a color-singlet vector resonance, which couples to the heaviest quarks, the top quarks, but very weakly to the rest of the fermions in the Standard Model. We find that the dominant production of such a resonance does not appear at the tree level -- it rather occurs at the one-loop level in association with an extra jet. Signatures like t anti-t plus jets readily emerge as a result of the subsequent decay of the resonance into a pair of top quarks. Without the additional jet, the resonance can still be produced off-shell, which gives a sizeable contr…
The recently observed diphoton resonance around 750~GeV at the LHC Run-2 could be interpreted as a weak singlet scalar. The scalar might also decay into a pair of $Z$-boson and photon. The $Z$-boson is highly boosted and appears as a fat jet in the detector. We use the jet substructure method to explore the possibility of discovering the singlet scalar in the process of $pp\to S\to Zγ$ in the future LHC experiment.
Triangular flow $v_3$ of identified and inclusive particles in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV is studied as a function of centrality and transverse momentum within the \textsc{hydjet++} model. The model enables one to investigate the influence of both hard processes and final-state interactions on the harmonics of particle anisotropic flow. Decays of resonances are found to increase the magnitude of the $v_3(p_{\rm T})$ distributions at $p_{\rm T} \geq 2$ GeV/$c$ and shift their maxima to higher transverse momenta. The $p_{\rm T}$-integrated triangular flow, however, becomes sl…
We introduce the `stealth bosons' $S$, light boosted particles with a decay $S \to AA \to q \bar q q \bar q$ into two daughter bosons $A$, which subsequently decay into four quarks that are reconstructed as a single fat jet. Variables that measure the two-pronged structure of fat jets, which are used for diboson resonance searches in hadronic or semi-leptonic final states, classify the jets produced in stealth boson decays as QCD-like - actually, for these variables they may seem more background-like than the QCD background itself. The number of tracks in those jets can also be, on average, mu…
We study the top quark pair events production in $pp$ collisions in the $\ell$+jets channel at the LHC energy of $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV for Standard Model as well as new physics processes. We explore the usage of semi-boosted topologies where the top quark decays into a boosted hadronic $W$-jet and an isolated $b$-jet and study their performance in the $t\bar{t}$ events kinematic reconstruction. An efficiency increase is observed and the correlation of selected kinematic variables between the detector and particle level is studied. Quality of the reconstructed mass line shape of a $Z'$ model with…
Recently (arXiv:1608.00526), a new framework for warped higher-dimensional compactifications with "bulk" standard model (SM) was proposed: in addition to the UV (Planck scale) and IR (a couple of TeV) branes, there is an intermediate brane, taken to be around 10 TeV. The SM matter and Higgs fields propagate from the UV brane down to this intermediate brane only, while gauge and gravity fields propagate in the entire bulk. Such a configuration renders the lightest gauge Kaluza-Klein (KK) states within LHC reach, simultaneously satisfying flavor and CP constraints. In addition, the usual leading…
We show that the signature of two boosted $W$-jets plus large missing energy is very promising to probe heavy charged resonances ($X^\pm$) through the process of $pp\to X^+X^-\to W^+W^- X^0 X^0$ where $X^0$ denotes dark matter candidate. The hadronic decay mode of the $W$ boson is considered to maximize the number of signal events. When the mass split between $X^\pm$ and $X^0$ is large, one has to utilize the jet-substructure technique to analyze the boosted $W$-jet. For illustration we consider the process of chargino pair production at the LHC, i.e., $pp\to χ_1^+χ^-_1 \to W^+W^-χ_1^0χ_1^0$, …
In this paper we introduce a new approach to study jet substructure in the center-of-mass frame of the jet. We demonstrate that it can be used to discriminate the boosted heavy particles from the QCD jets and the method is complimentary to the existing other jet substructure algorithms. Applications to searches for hadronically decaying W/Z+jets and heavy resonance that decays to a WW final state are also discussed.
A preliminary investigation of a large class of Hidden Valley models is presented. These models are more challenging than those considered in arXiv:0712.2041 [hep-ph]; although they produce a new light resonance which decays to heavy standard model fermions, they exhibit no light dilepton resonance. A heavy $Z'$ decaying to v-hadrons, which in turn decay mainly to bottom quarks and tau leptons, is considered; six case studies are investigated, using a new Monte Carlo simulation package. It is found that the one-to-one correspondence of jets and partons is badly broken, and the high-multiplicit…
