We analyse the constraints on models of WIMP Dark Matter that can be derived from upper bounds on the "monojet" cross section at the LHC. These constraints were originally interpreted in the context of an effective field theory (EFT) where the Standard Model is extended by a dimension--6 operator whose coefficient is $1/Λ^2$. We show that combining the 8 TeV data of the ATLAS and CMS collaborations improves the bounds only slightly. We then analyze this final state in the context of simplified models with $s-$channel mediator. We show that if the decay width of the mediator is small, these simplified models can be accurately modeled by the effective field theory only if the mediator mass is above 5 TeV. Finally, we point out that even if the EFT accurately describes the ${\cal O}(Λ^{-2})$ contributions to the matrix element, for values of $Λ$ near the current bound it receives significant contributions of order $Λ^{-4}$, in the context of simplified models, these correspond to diagrams where two mediators are exchanged. This observation challenges the internal consistency of the EFT description since dimension$-8$ operators, which would also contribute to ${\cal O}(Λ^{-4})$ to the matrix element, are not included.
We explore the implications of monojet searches at hadron colliders in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM). To quantify the impact of monojet searches, we consider simplified MSSM scenarios with neutralino dark matter. The monojet results of the LHC Run 1 are reinterpreted in the context of several MSSM simplified scenarios, and the complementarity with direct supersymmetry search results is highlighted. We also investigate the reach of monojet searches for the Run 2, as well as for future higher energy hadron colliders.
Identifying dark matter interactions in monojet searches
We consider minimal dark matter scenarios featuring momentum-dependent couplings of the dark sector to the Standard Model. We derive constraints from existing LHC searches in the monojet channel, estimate the future LHC sensitivity for an integrated luminosity of 300 fb$^{-1}$, and compare with models exhibiting conventional momentum-independent interactions with the dark sector. In addition to being well motivated by (composite) pseudo-Goldstone dark matter scenarios, momentum-dependent couplings are interesting as they weaken direct detection constraints. For a specific dark matter mass, the…
We obtain constraints on first- and second-generation scalar leptoquarks using the available data on dilepton (Drell-Yan) and monojet searches at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Assuming that the leptoquark interactions respect the Standard Model gauge symmetries as well as lepton and baryon numbers, we show that the study of dilepton production enlarges the exclusion region on the mass and coupling plane with respect to the pair production searches for first-generation leptoquarks. Moreover, the monojet channel leads to a larger excluded parameter region for moderate to large values of the le…
New or $ν$ Missing Energy? Discriminating Dark Matter from Neutrino Interactions at the LHC
In previous work, we identified an anomalous number of events in the LHC jets+MET searches characterized by low jet multiplicity and low-to-moderate transverse energy variables. Here, we update this analysis with results from a new ATLAS search in the monojet channel which also shows a consistent excess. As before, we find that this "monojet excess" is well-described by the resonant production of a heavy colored state decaying to a quark and a massive invisible particle. In the combined ATLAS and CMS data, we now find a local (global) preference of 3.3$σ$ (2.5$σ$) for the new physics model ove…
The ATLAS and CMS collaborations recently reported a mild excess in the diphoton final state pointing to a resonance with a mass of around 750 GeV and a potentially large width. We consider the possibility of a scalar resonance being produced via gluon fusion and decaying to electroweak gauge bosons, jets and pairs of invisible particles, stable at collider scales. We compute limits from monojet searches on such a resonance and test their compatibility with the requirement for a large width. We also study whether the stable particle can be a a dark matter candidate and investigate the correspo…
In this paper we study the possible searches at colliders using Vector Boson Fusion topology in the context of Simplified Models signatures. We examine the possible physics reach of these searches with regard to monojet-type searches, and determine how these two signatures are complementary.
Unitarity and Monojet Bounds on Models for DAMA, CoGeNT, and CRESST-II
In models with colored particle $\mathcal{Q}$ that can decay into a dark matter candidate $X$, the relevant collider process $pp\to \mathcal{Q}\bar{\mathcal{Q}}\rightarrow X\bar{X}+$jets gives rise to events with significant transverse momentum imbalance. When the masses of $\mathcal{Q}$ and $X$ are very close, the relevant signature becomes monojet-like, and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) search limits become much less constraining. In this paper, we study the current and anticipated experimental sensitivity to such particles at the High-Luminosity LHC at $\sqrt{s}=14\,\mathrm{TeV}$ with $\mathc…
We consider a fermionic dark matter (DM) particle in renormalizable Standard Model (SM) gauge interactions in a simple $t$-channel model. The DM particle interactions with SM fermions is through the exchange of scalar and vector mediators which carry colour or lepton number. In the case of coloured mediators considered in this study, we find that if the DM is thermally produced and accounts for the observed relic density almost the entire parameter space is ruled out by the direct detection observations. The bounds from the monojet plus missing energy searches at the Large Hadron Collider are …
We utilize the recent LHC-13 TeV data to study the lower mass bound on top-squark (stop) in natural supersymmetry. We recast the LHC sparticle inclusive search of $(\ge 1){\rm jets} + E^{miss}_T$ with $α_T$ variable, the direct stop pair search (1-lepton channel and all-hadronic channel) and the monojet analyses. We find that these searches are complementary depending on stop and higgsino masses: for a heavy stop the all-hadronic stop pair search provides the strongest bound, for an intermediate stop the inclusive SUSY analysis with $α_T$ variable is most efficient, while for a compressed stop…
In this paper we argue that monojet and monophoton searches can be a sensitive test of very highly ionizing particles such as particles with charges $\gtrsim 150e$ and more generally particles that do not reach the outer parts of the detector. 8 TeV monojet data from the CMS experiment excludes such objects with masses in the range $\lesssim 650~{\text{GeV}}$ and charges $\gtrsim 100e$. This nicely complements searches for highly ionizing objects at ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb. Expected improvements in these channels will extend the sensitivity range to $m\lesssim 750~{\text{GeV}}$. This search…

We study several simplified dark matter (DM) models and their signatures at the LHC using neural networks. We focus on the usual monojet plus missing transverse energy channel, but to train the algorithms we organize the data in 2D histograms instead of event-by-event arrays. This results in a large performance boost to distinguish between standard model (SM) only and SM plus new physics signals. We use the kinematic monojet features as input data which allow us to describe families of models with a single data sample. We found that the neural network performance does not depend on the simulat…
We investigate models involving a vector-like quark X, which forms a 750 GeV bound state and reproduces the observed diphoton signals at the LHC, in connection with other excesses in the LHC data. An exotic hypercharge of -4/3 is required to fit the signal cross section, which indicates that there is additional particle(s) that mediates the decay of X in the full theory. We find that, introducing an SU(2) doublet vector-like quark of mass around 600 GeV in our UV-complete framework can accommodate not only the diphoton but also the on-Z excess (and potentially a slight excess in the monojet ev…
Displaced vertices are relatively unusual signatures for dark matter searches at the LHC. We revisit the model of pseudo-Dirac dark matter (pDDM), which can accommodate the correct relic density, evade direct detection constraints, and generically provide observable collider signatures in the form of displaced vertices. We use this model as a benchmark to illustrate the general techniques involved in the analysis, the complementarity between monojet and displaced vertex searches, and provide a comprehensive study of the current bounds and prospective reach.
We find the constraints on various non-standard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos from monojet+MET searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Also, we show that the measurement of neutrino-nucleon cross-section from the observation of high energy astrophysical neutrino events at IceCube facilitates strong constraints on NSI as well. To this end, we pursue a comparative study of the prospects of LHC and IceCube in detecting NSI, also mentioning the role of low-energy experiments. We discuss the case of NSI with a new vector boson $Z'$ and it is found that for some range of $m_{Z'}$ LHC puts mor…
We study self-interacting dark matter signatures at the Large Hadron Collider. A light dark photon, mediating dark matter self-interactions, can bind dark matter particles to form a bound state when they are produced via a heavy pseduoscalar in $pp$ collisions. The bound state can further annihilate into a pair of boosted dark photons, which subsequently decay into charged leptons through a kinetic mixing portal, resulting in striking displaced lepton jet signals. After adapting the analysis used in the ATLAS experiment, we explore the reach of the model parameters at the $13~{\rm TeV}$ run wi…
In the supersymmetric models, the coannihilation of the neutralino DM with a lighter supersymmetric particle provides a feasible way to accommodate the observed cosmological DM relic density. Such a mechanism predicts a compressed spectrum of the neutralino DM and its coannihilating partner, which results in the soft final states and makes the searches for sparticles challenging at colliders. On the other hand, the abundance of the freeze-out neutralino DM usually increases as the DM mass becomes heavier. This implies an upper bound on the mass of the neutralino DM. Given these observations, w…
We consider simplified dark matter models where a dark matter candidate couples to the standard model (SM) particles via an $s$-channel spin-2 mediator, and study constraints on the model parameter space from the current LHC data. Our focus lies on the complementarity among different searches, in particular monojet and multijet plus missing energy searches and resonance searches. For universal couplings of the mediator to SM particles, missing-energy searches can give stronger constraints than $WW$, $ZZ$, dijet, dihiggs, $t\bar t$, $b\bar b$ resonance searches in the low-mass region and/or whe…
The Standard Model problems lead to the new theories of extra dimensions: Randall-Sundrum model, Arkani-Hamed-Dimopoulos-Dvali model and TeV$^{-1}$ model. In the framework of these models with the help of computer program Pythia8.2 were calculated the production cross sections for Kaluza-Klein particles at various energies at the LHC. The generation of monojet events from scalar graviton emission was considered for number of extra dimensions, n=2, 4, 6, for the energy at the LHC 14 TeV. Also are studied the graviton production processes through the gluon-gluon, quark-gluon and quark-quark fusi…
We study a simple TeV-scale model of baryon number violation which explains the observed proximity of the dark matter and baryon abundances. The model has constraints arising from both low and high-energy processes, and in particular, predicts a sizable rate for the neutron-antineutron ($n-\bar{n}$) oscillation at low energy and the monojet signal at the LHC. We find an interesting complementarity among the constraints arising from the observed baryon asymmetry, ratio of dark matter and baryon abundances, $n-\bar{n}$ oscillation lifetime and the LHC monojet signal. There are regions in the par…
We study the signatures of the triplet-quadruplet dark matter model at the LHC and future colliders, including the 100 TeV Super Proton-Proton Collider and the 240 GeV Circular Electron Positron Collider. The dark sector in this model contains one fermionic electroweak triplet and two fermionic quadruplets, which have two kinds of Yukawa couplings to the Higgs doublet. Electroweak production signals of the dark sector fermions in the $\text{monojet}+/\!\!\!\!E_\mathrm{T}$, disappearing track, and $\text{multilepton}+/\!\!\!\!E_\mathrm{T}$ channels at the LHC and the Super Proton-Proton Collide…
