Monojet and monophoton final states with large missing transverse energy (${\not E}_T$) are important for dark matter (DM) searches at colliders. We present analytic expressions for the differential cross sections for the parton-level processes, $q\bar{q}(qg)\to g(q)χ\barχ$ and $q\bar{q}\to γχ\barχ$, for a neutral DM particle with a magnetic dipole moment (MDM) or an electric dipole moment (EDM). We collectively call such DM candidates dipole moment dark matter (DMDM). We also provide monojet cross sections for scalar, vector and axial-vector interactions. We then use ATLAS/CMS monojet${+\not E}_T$ data and CMS monophoton$+{\not E}_T$ data to constrain DMDM. We find that 7 TeV LHC bounds on the MDM DM-proton scattering cross section are about six orders of magnitude weaker than on the conventional spin-independent cross section.
The production of $D$-mesons in high-energy $pp$ collisions at the LHC kinematic regime is analyzed with the dipole approach in the momentum representation. We present predictions for the $D$-meson differential cross section in terms of the transverse momentum and rapidity distributions taking into account the nonlinear behavior of the QCD dynamics. Comparison between our results and the corresponding experimental measurements reported by the ALICE and LHCb Collaborations in different rapidity bins is performed. We show that the $D$-meson production in the high energy limit can be properly add…
The electric and magnetic dipole moment of charm and bottom baryons can be measured for the first time by using bent crystal technology at the LHC. The experimental method, proposed in recent years, suffers from limited statistics, which dominates the uncertainty of the measurement. In this work, we present an alternative experimental layout, based on the use of crystal lenses, that improves the trapping efficiency by about a factor 15 (35) for a 2-cm (5-mm) target with respect to the nominal layout, with plain crystal faces. The efficiencies are evaluated taking into account the constraints f…
We propose a unique program of measurements of electric and magnetic dipole moments of charm, beauty and strange charged baryons at the LHC, based on the phenomenon of spin precession of channeled particles in bent crystals. Studies of crystal channeling and spin precession of positively- and negatively-charged particles are presented, along with feasibility studies and expected sensitivities for the proposed experiment using a layout based on the LHCb detector.
Permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of fundamental particles provide powerful probes for physics beyond the Standard Model. We propose to search for the EDM of strange and charm baryons at LHC, extending the ongoing experimental program on the neutron, muon, atoms, molecules and light nuclei. The EDM of strange Lambda baryons, selected from weak decays of charm baryons produced in pp collisions at LHC, can be determined by studying the spin precession in the magnetic field of the detector tracking system. A test of CPT symmetry can be performed by measuring the magnetic dipole moment of L…
The significant neutrino flux at high rapidity at the LHC motivates dedicated forward detectors to study the properties of neutrinos at TeV energies. We investigate magnetic dipole interactions between the active neutrinos and new sterile states at emulsion and liquid argon experiments that could be located in a future Forward Physics Facility (FPF) downstream of the ATLAS interaction point. The up-scattering of neutrinos off electrons produces an electron recoil signature that can probe new regions of parameter space at the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), particularly for liquid argon detectors…
Transverse momentum broadening of a parton propagating through a large nucleus is evaluated in the color dipole approach using different models for the dipole cross section or unintegrated gluon distribution, which lead to different values of the coefficient $C_{\mathcal{F}}(0,s)$. Numerical calculations are compared to data extracted from LHCb and ALICE experiments for nuclear broadening of $J/ψ$. We find that different models which describe the small-$x$ data predict values of $Δp_T^2$ that agree reasonably well with experiment, specially for forward rapidity. The centrality dependence was a…
The determination of the electromagnetic dipole moments of the top quark is one of the most important goals of the top quark physics program in the collider experiments. For this reason, the top quark pair production to investigate the sensitivity on the electric and magnetic dipole moments of the top quark via the process $pp\rightarrow p γp \rightarrow p t \bar{t} X$ at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) and High-Energy Large Hadron Collider (HE-LHC) is discussed. We apply pure leptonic and semileptonic decays for top quark pair production in …
A study on the prompt photon production within the QCD color dipole picture with emphasis in $pp$ and $pA$ collisions at the LHC energy regimes is performed. We present predictions for the differential cross section as a function of photon transverse momentum at different rapidity bins considering updated phenomenological color dipole models, which take into account the QCD gluon saturation physics. The results are directly compared to the recent experimental measurements provided by CMS and ATLAS Collaborations, showing a reasonable agreement in all rapidity bins with no free parameters. Spec…
In this paper, we examine the sensitivity of the three-top quark production at the LHC to the top quark flavor-changing neutral currents (FCNC) as well as the sensitivity of the four-top production to the strong and weak dipole moments of the top quark. Upper limits at $95\%$ CL on the branching fractions of $\mathcal{B}(t\rightarrow qX)$, where $X = g, Z, γ, H$ and $q=u,c$, are set by performing an analysis on three-top events in the same-sign dilepton channel. We consider the main sources of the background processes and a realistic detector simulation is performed at the center-of-mass energ…
We study the effect of operators generating dipole couplings of the light quarks to electroweak gauge bosons on several observables at LHC. We start by demonstrating that the determination of the gauge boson self-couplings from electroweak diboson production at LHC is robust under the inclusion of those quark dipole operators even when let them totally unconstrained in the analysis. Conversely, we determine the bounds that the diboson data imposes on the light-quark dipole couplings and show that they represent a significant improvement over the limits arising from Z and W electroweak precisio…
Spin rotation of $Ω^{\pm}$ baryons channeling in a bent crystal at the LHC in addition to EDM measurement open possibility to study $Ω^{\pm}$ baryons electric quadrupole moment. Equations for spin and tensor polarization rotation are presented along with the estimations study for values of the effects under discussion.
In this paper the production cross section $pp\rightarrow (γ, Z) \to ν_τ\bar ν_τγ+X$ in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8, 13, 14, 33TeV$ is presented. Furthermore, we estimate bounds at the $95\%C. L.$ on the dipole moments of the tau-neutrino using integrated luminosity of ${\cal L}=20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 3000 fb^{-1}$ collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC and we consider systematic uncertainties of $δ_{sys}=0, 5, 10\%$. It is shown that the process under consideration is a good prospect for probing the dipole moments of the tau-neutrino at the LHC.
The coherent photonuclear production of a $\mathrm{J/}ψ$ vector meson at the LHC has been computed using two different sets of solutions of the impact-parameter dependent Balitsky-Kovchegov equation. The nuclear dipole scattering amplitudes are obtained either from ($i$) solutions for this process off proton targets coupled with a Glauber-Gribov prescription, or ($ii$) from solutions obtained with an initial condition representing the nucleus. These approaches predict different cross sections, which are compared with existing data from ultra-peripheral collisions at the LHC. The latter approac…
The milliQan Collaboration has proposed to search for millicharged particles by looking for very weakly ionizing tracks in a detector installed in a cavern near the CMS experiment at the LHC. We note that another form of exotica can also yield weakly ionizing tracks. If a heavy neutrino has an electric dipole moment (EDM), then the milliQan experiment may be sensitive to it as well. In particular, writing the general dimension-5 operator for an EDM with a scale of a TeV and a one-loop factor, one finds a potential EDM as high as a few times $10^{-17}$ e-cm, and models exist where it is an orde…
We study the constraints that can be placed on anomalous $τ$-lepton couplings at the LHC. We use an effective Lagrangian description for physics beyond the standard model which contains the $τ$-lepton anomalous magnetic moment, electric dipole moment and weak dipole moments in two operators of dimension six. We include in our study two additional operators of dimension eight that directly couple the $τ$-leptons to gluons and are therefore enhanced at the LHC. We consider the two main effects from these couplings: modifications to the Drell-Yan cross-section and to the $τ$-lepton pair productio…
In this paper we present a comprehensive analysis of exclusive vector meson photoproduction in $pp$, $pPb$ and $PbPb$ collisions at Run 2 LHC energies using the Color Dipole formalism. The rapidity distributions and total cross sections for the $ρ$, $ϕ$, $J/Ψ$, $Ψ(2S)$ and $Υ$ production are estimated considering the more recent phenomenological models for the dipole - proton scattering amplitude, which are based on the Color Glass Condensate formalism and are able to describe the inclusive and exclusive $ep$ HERA data. Moreover, we also discuss the impact of the modelling of the vector meson …
We investigate the weak electric and magnetic dipole moments of top quark-Z boson interactions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International Linear Collider (ILC). Their vanishingly small magnitude in the Standard Model makes these couplings ideal for probing New Physics interactions and for exploring the role of top quarks in electroweak symmetry breaking. In our analysis, we consider the production of two top quarks in association with a Z boson at the LHC, and top quark pairs mediated by neutral gauge bosons at the ILC. These processes yield direct sensitivity to top quark-Z boso…
In this paper we revisit the idea of measuring the magnetic dipole moments of the charm baryons and, in particular, of charmed Lambda by studying the spin precession induced by the strong effective magnetic field inside the channels of a bent crystal. We present a detailed sensitivity study showing the feasibility of such an experiment at the LHC in the coming years.
Bounds on the absorptive (imaginary) parts of the top quark chromomagnetic $\hatμ_t$ and chromoelectric $\hat{d}_t$ dipole moments are obtained by reinterpreting the most recent LHC data in top quark pair production. It is found that both limits are of the order of $10^{-1}-10^{-2}$, which are consistent with the standard model prediction of ${\rm Im}\big[\hatμ_t\big]$. The effects of the absorptive parts of the top quark dipole moments are also studied via some kinematic distributions of $\bar{t}t$ production, though no significant deviation from the standard model leading order contribution …
In this paper we discuss the possibility of measuring the anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments of the $τ$ lepton. The method consists in studying the spin precession induced by the strong effective magnetic field inside channels of a bent crystal with a dedicated setup at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.
The exclusive $Υ$ photoproduction in proton-proton and proton - nucleus collisions at LHC energies is investigated using the color dipole formalism and considering different models for the $Υ$ wave function and forward dipole - target scattering amplitude. Our goal is to update the color dipole predictions and estimate the theoretical uncertainty present in these predictions. We present predictions for the kinematical ranges probed by the ALICE, CMS and LHCb Collaborations.
We consider the prospects for measuring distinctive signatures of the CP-violating phases in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) in light of the limits on sparticle masses from searches at the LHC. We use the CPsuperH code to evaluate model predictions and scan the parameter space using a geometric approach that maximizes CP-violating observables subject to the current upper limits on electric dipole moments (EDMs). We focus on the possible CP-violating asymmetry $A_{\rm CP}$ in $b \to s γ$ decay and on a possible CP-violating contribution to the $B_s - \overline{…
In this paper, we investigate the prospects of measuring the strong and weak dipole moments of the top quark at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Measurements of these couplings provide an excellent opportunity to probe new physics interactions as they have quite small magnitudes in the Standard Model. Our analyses are through studying the production cross sections of $t\bar{t}WW$ and $t\bar{t}ZZ$ processes in the same sign dilepton and four-lepton final states, respectively. The sensitivities to strong and weak top quark dipole interactions at the $95\%$ confidence level for various integrated…
We present predictions at NLO accuracy in QCD for top-quark pair production induced by an anomalous chromomagnetic dipole moment of the top quark. Our results are obtained for total as well as fully differential cross sections, including matching to parton shower simulations. This process is expected to provide the most stringent direct limits on top-quark chromomagnetic dipole moment. We find that NLO corrections increase the contribution from the dipole moment by about 50\% at the LHC, and significantly reduce the renormalization and factorization scale dependence. Using the NLO prediction, …
An analysis of prompt photon production in high energy nuclear collisions at the LHC energy regime is performed within the parton saturation picture taking into account the updated phenomenological color dipole models. The results are confronted with the measurements made by the ALICE, ATLAS, and CMS experiments in terms of photon transverse momentum at different rapidity bins. As a result, we show that the prompt photon production exhibits distinct scalings in $AA$ events associated to geometrical properties of the collision and can be properly addressed in the color dipole formalism.
We investigate saturation effects in $ep$ scattering as well as in ultraperipheral $p$A and AA collisions at small $x$ with four variants of the impact parameter dependent color dipole model: with and without gluon saturation and with and without a novel mechanism that suppresses unphysical dipole radii above the confinement scale, a problem not addressed by most implementations. We show that $ep$ scattering at HERA can be very well described by any of the four variants. When going from $ep$ to $e$A scattering, saturation effects are expected to increase as $\sim$A$^{1/3}$. In lieu of an elect…
In a bent crystal the $P$-odd effect of short-lived baryon spin rotation could imitate spin rotation caused by assumed EDM. Use of different behavior of $P$-odd and $T$-odd spin rotations at crystal turning around the direction of particle momentum makes it possible to exclude $P$-odd rotation contribution, when measuring short-lived baryons EDM. Subtraction of the measurement results for angle ranges $φ$ and $φ+ π$ from each other enables measuring $T$-odd rotation at scattering of negatively charged beauty and neutral baryons by axes of unbent crystal.
We present a detailed study of open heavy flavor production in high-energy $pp$ collisions at the LHC in the color dipole framework. The transverse momentum distributions of produced $b$-jets, accounting for the jet energy loss, as well as produced open charm $D$ and bottom $B$ mesons in distinct rapidity intervals relevant for LHC measurements are computed. The dipole model results for the differential $b$-jet production cross section are compared to the recent ATLAS and CMS data while the results for $D$ and $B$ mesons production cross sections -- to the corresponding LHCb data. Several mode…
We use spin correlations to constrain anomalous $τ$-lepton couplings at the LHC including its anomalous magnetic moment, electric dipole moment and weak dipole moments. Single spin correlations are ideal to probe interference terms between the SM and new dipole-type couplings as they are not suppressed by the $τ$-lepton mass. Double spin asymmetries give rise to $T$-odd correlations useful to probe $CP$ violation purely within the new physics amplitudes, as their appearance from interference with the SM is suppressed by $m_τ$. We compare our constraints to those obtained earlier on the basis o…
In the context of supersymmetry, the two-loop Barr-Zee diagrams which induce CP-violating electric dipole moment of electron due to superpartners simultaneously yield CP-conserving magnetic dipole moment of muon. In this paper, we derive the coherence between the electric and magnetic dipole moments at two-loop level due to stops, charginos or neutralinos-charginos. We also use the coherence to constrain superpartner masses and their CP-violating phases, in the light of recent ACME limit on the electric dipole moment of electron and future experiments about magnetic dipole moment of muon such …
Electromagnetic dipole moments of short-lived particles are sensitive to physics within and beyond the Standard Model of particle physics but have not been accessible experimentally to date. To perform such measurements it has been proposed to exploit the spin precession of channeled particles in bent crystals at the LHC. Progress that enables the first measurement of charm baryon dipole moments is reported. In particular, the design and characterization on beam of silicon and germanium bent crystal prototypes, the optimization of the experimental setup, and advanced analysis techniques are di…
We discuss Drell-Yan production of dileptons at high energies in forward rapidity region in a hybrid high-energy approach. This approach uses unintegrated gluon distributions in one proton and collinear quark/antiquark distributions in the second proton. Corresponding momentum-space formula for the differential cross sections in high-energy approximation has been derived and will be presented. The relation to the commonly used dipole approach is discussed. We conclude and illustrate that some results of the dipole approaches are too approximate, as far as kinematics is considered, and in fact …
We analyze CP-violating effects in both Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) measurements and future analyses at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) assuming a Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) with "soft" CP-violation. Our analysis of EDMs and current LHC constraints shows that, in the case of a 2HDM Type II and Type III, an $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ CP-violating phase in the Yukawa interaction between $H_1$ (the $125~\textrm{GeV}$ Higgs boson) and fermions is still allowed. For these scenarios, we study CP-violating effects in the neutron EDM and $t\bar{t}H_1$ production at the LHC. Our analysis shows that such a…
Photoproduction of $ρ^0$ mesons in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions at energies available at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC)
In this paper we present a comprehensive analysis of the exclusive heavy quark photoproduction in $pp$, $pPb$ and $PbPb$ collisions at LHC and FCC energies using the color dipole formalism and taking into account of nonlinear corrections to the QCD dynamics. We estimate the rapidity distributions and cross sections for the charm and bottom production considering three phenomenological models for the dipole-proton scattering amplitude that are able to describe the $ep$ HERA data. Our results indicate that a future experimental analysis of this process is feasible, which will allow us to improve…
The coherent cross section of $J/ψ$, $ρ$, $ϕ$ are computed in dipole model in the ultraperipheral PbPb collisions, the IP-Sat and IIM model are applied in the calculation of the differential cross section of the dipole scattering off the nucleon, three kinds of forward vector meson wave functions are used in the overlap. The prediction of $J/ψ$ and $ρ$ is compared with the experimental data of the ALICE Collaboration, and the prediction of $ϕ$ is also given in this paper.
