A study on the prompt photon production within the QCD color dipole picture with emphasis in $pp$ and $pA$ collisions at the LHC energy regimes is performed. We present predictions for the differential cross section as a function of photon transverse momentum at different rapidity bins considering updated phenomenological color dipole models, which take into account the QCD gluon saturation physics. The results are directly compared to the recent experimental measurements provided by CMS and ATLAS Collaborations, showing a reasonable agreement in all rapidity bins with no free parameters. Special attention is given to the IPSAT model given its good description of the data in all rapidity bins from low- to high-$p_{T}$ ranges. As a result, a free-parameter approach has succeeded in describing the LHC data for prompt photon production, while new predictions for the 13-TeV data is presented in view of new data to confirm such prospect.
The photoproduction of vector mesons in $pPb$ collisions at LHC energies is investigated assuming that the color singlet $t$-channel exchange carries a large momentum transfer $t$. The rapidity distributions and total cross sections for the process $Pb \, p \rightarrow Pb \otimes V \otimes \,jet + X$, with $V = ρ, \, J/Ψ$ and $\otimes$ representing a rapidity gap in the final state, are estimated considering the non-forward solution of the BFKL equation at high energy and large -- $t$. A comparison with the predictions obtained at the Born level also is presented. We predict a large enhancemen…
Exclusive photoproduction of vector mesons in the perturbative two-gluon exchange formalism depends significantly on nucleon and nuclear gluon distributions. In the present study we calculate total cross sections and rapidity distributions of $J/ψ(1s)$, $ψ(2s)$, $Υ(1s)$, $Υ(2s)$, and $Υ(3s)$ in ultraperipheral proton-lead (pPb) and lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=5$ TeV and $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=2.76$ TeV respectively. Effects of gluon shadowing are investigated and potentials for constraining nuclear gluon modifications are discussed.
Collinear factorized perturbative QCD model predictions are compared for p+Pb at 4.4A TeV to test nuclear shadowing of parton distribution at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The nuclear modification factor (NMF), R_{pPb}(y=0,p_T<20 GeV/c) = dn_{p Pb} /(N_{coll}(b)dn_{pp}), is computed with electron-nucleus (e+A) global fit with different nuclear shadow distributions and compared to fixed Q^2 shadow ansatz used in Monte Carlo Heavy Ion Jet Interacting Generator (HIJING) type models. Due to rapid DGLAP reduction of shadowing with increasing Q^2 used in e+A global fit, our results confirm that n…
In this Letter, we consider strong and electromagnetic (ultraperipheral) mechanisms in proton-nucleus coherent diffraction at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We explicitly demonstrate the dominance of the latter and explain the CMS data on the forward rapidity gap distribution in $pPb$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.16$ TeV. In particular, we provide simple estimates, which give a good, semi-quantitative description of both magnitude and shape of the $Δη^F$ distribution in the Pomeron-proton topology. We also make predictions for the proton-oxygen run.
We study flavor changing effects on the \ppbchT process at the Large Hadron Collider(LHC), which are inspired by the left-handed up-type squark mixings in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model(MSSM). We find that the SUSY QCD radiative corrections to $bcH^\pm$ coupling can significantly enhance the cross sections at the tree-level by a factor about $1.5 \sim 5$ with our choice of parameters. We conclude that the squark mixing mechanism in the MSSM makes the \ppbchT process a new channel for discovering a charged Higgs boson and investigating flavor changing effects.
We investigate the theoretical uncertainty on the predictions for the photoproduction of J/psi and Upsilon states in the proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC within the color dipole formalism. Predictions for the rapidity distributions are presented and the dependence on the meson wavefunction, heavy quark mass as well as the models for the dipole cross section are analyzed. We compare directly the theoretical results to the recent data from ALICE collaboration on J/psi production in pPb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV and in PbPb collisio…
In this note we demonstrate how the experimental material taken from WA56 Experiment at CERN looks in the recently developed unified picture for hadron spectra. Our analysis shows that baryonium states observed in the WA56 Experiment are the states living in the corresponding KK tower built in according to the earlier established general, physical law.
In this note we show how the experimental material given by NA49 Collaboration at CERN looks in the developed recently unified picture for hadron spectra. It is found that the results of the experimental studies by the NA49 Collaboration are excellently incorporated in the unified picture for hadron spectra. Our analysis shows that $Ξ$-like baryon states observed by the NA49 Collaboration are the states living in the corresponding KK tower built in according to the earlier established general, physical law.
In this paper we study the diffractive $Z$ boson pair production mediated by the Kaluza-Klein graviton in the large extra dimensions scenario at the CERN Large Hadron Collider energies. Considering the Durham model we estimate the total cross section for the central inclusive and exclusive diffractive production of a $Z$ boson pair in $pp/pPb/PbPb$ collisions. Our results indicate that the experimental analysis of the central inclusive production in $pp$ collisions is feasible at CERN LHC.
The next-generation high-energy facilities, the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the prospective $e^+e^-$ International Linear Collider (ILC), are expected to unravel new structures of matter and forces from the electroweak scale to the TeV scale. In this report we review the complementary role of LHC and ILC in drawing a comprehensive and high-precision picture of the mechanism breaking the electroweak symmetries and generating mass, and the unification of forces in the frame of supersymmetry.
An analysis of prompt photon production in high energy nuclear collisions at the LHC energy regime is performed within the parton saturation picture taking into account the updated phenomenological color dipole models. The results are confronted with the measurements made by the ALICE, ATLAS, and CMS experiments in terms of photon transverse momentum at different rapidity bins. As a result, we show that the prompt photon production exhibits distinct scalings in $AA$ events associated to geometrical properties of the collision and can be properly addressed in the color dipole formalism.
Photoproduction of heavy quarks in ultraperipheral collisions can help elucidate important features of the physics of heavy quarks in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Due to the dependence on parton distributions it can also potentially offer some constraining ability in the determination of nuclear parton distributions. In the present study we consider next-to-leading order (NLO) photoproduction of heavy quarks in ultraperipheral proton-proton (pp), proton-nucleus (pA), and nucleus-nucleus (AA) collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Total cross sections and rapidity distributions ar…
The first collisions of lead nuclei, delivered by the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the end of 2010, at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV, marked the beginning of a new era in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion physics. The study of the properties of the produced hot and dense strongly-interacting matter at these unprecedented energies is currently experimentally pursued by all four big LHC experiments, ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb. The more than a factor 10 increase of collision energy at LHC, relative to the previously achieved maximal energy at other collide…

Following the Run 1 period, LHC also successfully delivered PbPb collisions at the collision energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at the end of 2015. The study of the properties of the produced hot and dense strongly-interacting matter at these unprecedented energies is experimentally pursued by all four big LHC experiments, ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and…
We explore for the first time the possibilities to measure an intermediate-mass (mH = 115-140 GeV/c^2) Standard-Model Higgs boson in electromagnetic proton-lead (pPb) interactions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) via its b-bbar decay. Using equivalent Weizsaecker-Williams photon fluxes and Higgs effective field theory for the coupling gamma-gamma --> H, we obtain a leading-order cross section of the order of 0.3 pb for exclusive Higgs production in elastic (pPb --> gamma-gamma --> p H Pb) and semielastic (pPb --> gamma-gamma --> Pb H X) processes at sqrt(s) = 8.8 TeV. After applying var…
We present an extension to $π^{\pm} p$ and $K^{\pm} p$ elastic scattering at high energies of the impact-picture phenomenology we first proposed more than twenty years ago, for $p p$ and $\bar p p$ elastic scattering. We show, in particular, that the analytic form of the opacity function for the proton obtained previously is compatible with the experimental results on $πp$ and $K p$ elastic scattering at high energies. It is proposed that $π^{\pm}$ and $K^{\pm}$ external beams be provided from CERN-LHC, so that their elastic scattering from protons can be studied at higher energies. Our phenom…
We give a brief representation of the theoretical results from the color dipole picture, covering the total photoabsorption cross section, high-energy $J/ψ$ photoproduction with respect to recent experimental data from the LHCb Collaboration at CERN, and ultra-high energy neutrino scattering, relevant for the ICE-CUBE experiment.
A selection of recent data referring to Pb+Pb collisions at the SPS CERN energy of 158 GeV per nucleon is presented which might describe the state of highly excited strongly interacting matter both above and below the deconfinement to hadronization (phase) transition predicted by lattice QCD. A tentative picture emerges in which a partonic state is indeed formed in central Pb+Pb collisions which hadronizes at about T = 185 MeV, and expands its volume more than tenfold, cooling to about 120 MeV before hadronic collisions cease. We suggest further that all SPS collisions, from central S+S onward…
A strangeness and isospin asymmetry including statistical bootstrap model analysis of the multiparticle system produced in the Pb+Pb collision at 158 AGeV at CERN is presented. It is concluded that this interaction process has not crossed the deconfinenent line. Direct comparisons with the results of similar analyses pertaining to nucleus-nucleus and proton-antiproton collisions at CERN are made. The overall picture points to the S+S collision at 200 AGeV as a prime candidate of a process which has crossed the border separating the hadronic from the deconfined phase of matter.
We study the effect of nuclear matter in Upsilon production in dAu collisions at RHIC and pPb collisions at the LHC. We find that the nuclear modification factor, R^Upsilon_dAu, measured at RHIC is not satisfactorily reproduced by the conventional effects used in the literature, namely the modification of the gluon distribution in bound nucleons and an --effective-- survival probability for a bound state to escape the nucleus. In particular, we argue that this probability should be close to 1 as opposed to the J/psi case. We note that, at backward rapidities, the unexpected suppression of R^Up…
The production of same-sign W-boson pairs from double parton scatterings (DPS) in proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider is studied. The signal and background cross sections are estimated with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations using nuclear parton distribution functions for the Pb ion. At sqrt(sNN) = 8.8 TeV the cross section for the DPS process is about 150 pb, i.e. 600 times larger than that in proton-proton collisions at the same centre-of-mass energy and 1.5 times higher than the pPb --> WW+2-jets single-parton background. The measurement of such …
We investigate the three-neutrino mixing scheme for solving the atmospheric and LSND anomalies. We find the region in the parameter space that provides a good fit to the LSND and the SK atmospheric data, taking into account the CHOOZ constraint. We demonstrate that the goodness of this fit is comparable to that of the conventional fit to the solar and atmospheric data. Large values of the LSND angle are favoured and $\sin^2(2θ_{\rm LSND})$ can be as high as 0.1. This can have important effects on the atmospheric electron neutrino ratios as well as on down-going multi-GeV muon neutrino ratios. …
Purported signatures of collective dynamics in small systems like proton-proton (pp) or proton-nucleus (p-A) collisions still lack unambiguous understanding. Despite the qualitative and/or quantitative agreement of the data to hydrodynamic models, it has remained unclear whether the harmonic flows in small systems relate to the common physical picture of hydrodynamic collectivity driven by the initial geometry. In the present work, we aim to address this issue by invoking a novel concept of Event Shape Engineering (ESE), which has been leveraged to get some control of the initial geometry in h…
The particle yields and particle number ratios in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV are described within the integrated hydrokinetic model (iHKM) at the two different equations of state (EoS) for the quark-gluon matter and the two corresponding hadronization temperatures, $T=165$ MeV and $T=156$ MeV. The role of particle interactions at the final afterburner stage of the collision in the particle production is investigated by means of comparison of the results of full iHKM simulations with those where the annihilation and other inelastic processes (except for resonanc…
Based on the recent RHIC and LHC experimental results, the $\langle p_T\rangle$ dependence of identified light flavour charged hadrons on $\sqrt{(\frac{dN}{dy})/S_{\perp}}$, relevant scale in gluon saturation picture, is studied from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=7.7 GeV up to 5.02 TeV. This study is extended to the slopes of the $\langle p_T\rangle$ dependence on the particle mass and the $\langleβ_T\rangle$ parameter from Boltzmann-Gibbs Blast Wave (BGBW) fits of the $p_T$ spectra. A systematic decrease of the slope of the $\langle p_T\rangle$ dependence on $\sqrt{(\frac{dN}{dy})/S_{\perp}}$ from BES to t…
No conventional picture of nucleus-nucleus collisions has yet been able to explain the abundance of Omega and anti-Omega hyperons in central collisions between Pb nuclei at 158 A GeV at the CERN SPS. We argue that this is evidence that they are produced as topological defects arising from the formation of disoriented chiral condensates (DCC) with an average domain size of about 2 fm.
No conventional picture of nucleus-nucleus collisions has yet been able to explain the abundance of Omega and AntiOmega hadrons in central collisions between Pb nuclei at 158 A GeV at the CERN SPS. We argue that this is evidence that they are produced from topological defects in the form of skyrmions arising from the formation of disoriented chiral condensates. It is shown that the excess Omega or AntiOmega produced could not be easily washed out in the hadronic medium and therefore would survive in the final state.
No conventional picture of nucleus-nucleus collisions has yet been able to explain the abundance of Omega and AntiOmega in central collisions between Pb nuclei at 158 A GeV at the CERN SPS. We argue that such a deviation from predictions of statistical thermal models and numerical simulations is evidence that they are produced as topological defects in the form of skyrmions arising from the formation of disoriented chiral condensates. The estimated domain size falls in the right range to be consistent with the so far non-observation of DCC from the distribution of neutral pions.
We argue that the observed antiproton production in heavy-ion collisions at CERN-SpS energies can be understood if (contrary to most sequential scattering approaches) the backward direction in the process $p\bar p \leftrightarrow \bar{n}π$ (with $\bar{n}$=5-6) is consistently accounted for within a thermal framework. Employing the standard picture of subsequent chemical and thermal freezeout, which induces an over-saturation of pion number with associated chemical potentials of $μ_π\simeq$~60-80 MeV, enhances the backward reaction substantially. The resulting rates and corresponding cross sect…
Thermal models are commonly used to interpret heavy-ion data on particle yields and spectra and to extract the conditions of chemical and thermal freeze-out in heavy-ion collisions. I discuss the usefulness and limitations of such thermal model analyses and review the experimental and theoretical evidence for thermalization in nuclear collisions. The crucial role of correlating strangeness production data with single particle spectra and two-particle correlation measurements is pointed out. A consistent dynamical picture for the heavy-ion data from the CERN SPS involves an initial prehadronic …
First results of a detailed analysis of p+p elastic scattering data are presented from ISR to LHC energies utilizing the quark-diquark model of protons in a form proposed by Bialas and Bzdak. The differential cross-section of elastic proton-proton collisions is analyzed in detailed and systematic manner at small momentum transfers, starting from the energy range of CERN ISR at $\sqrt{s}= 23.5$ GeV, including also recent TOTEM data at the present LHC energies at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. These studies confirm the picture that the size of protons increases systematically with increasing energies, whil…
We present a new global QCD analysis of nuclear parton distribution functions and their uncertainties. In addition to the most commonly analyzed data sets for the deep-inelastic scattering of charged leptons off nuclei and Drell-Yan di-lepton production, we include also measurements for neutrino-nucleus scattering and inclusive pion production in deuteron-gold collisions. The analysis is performed at next-to-leading order accuracy in perturbative QCD in a general mass variable flavor number scheme, adopting a current set of free nucleon parton distribution functions, defined accordingly, as re…
A model for the evolution of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions at both CERN SPS and RHIC top energies is presented. Based on the assumption of thermalization and a parametrization of the space-time expansion of the produced matter, this model is able to describe a large set of observables including hadronic momentum spectra, correlations and abundancies, the emission of real photons, dilepton radiation and the suppression pattern of charmonia. Each of these obervables provides unique capabilities to study the reaction dynamics and taken together they form a strong and consistent picture o…

Measurements of the deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) of leptons and nucleons, $e+p\to e+X$, allow the extraction of Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) which describe the longitudinal momentum carried by the quarks, anti-quarks and gluons that make up the fast-moving nucleons. While PDFs provide crucial input to perturbative Quantum Chromodynamic (QCD) calculations of processes involving hadrons, they do not provide a complete picture of the partonic structure of nucleons. In particular, PDFs contain neither information on the correlations between partons nor on their transverse motion. Hard e…

A further development of the evolutionary picture of A+A collisions, which we call the integrated HydroKinetic Model (iHKM), is proposed. The model comprises a generator of the initial state GLISSANDO, pre-thermal dynamics of A+A collisions leading to thermalization, subsequent relativistic viscous hydrodynamic expansion of quark-gluon and hadron medium (vHLLE), its particlization, and finally hadronic cascade ultrarelativistic QMD. We calculate mid-rapidity charged-particle multiplicities, pion, kaon, and antiproton spectra, charged-particle elliptic flows, and pion interferometry radii for P…
In this work we explore the possibility to perform ``effective energy'' studies in very high energy collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In particular, we focus on the possibility to measure in $pp$ collisions the average charged multiplicity as a function of the effective energy with the ALICE experiment, using its capability to measure the energy of the leading baryons with the Zero Degree Calorimeters. Analyses of this kind have been done at lower centre--of--mass energies and have shown that, once the appropriate kinematic variables are chosen, particle production is charact…
