The construction of a butt-end multicell matrix proportional counter (MMPC) is presented in the work. Each cell is a butt-end proportional counter with a 5 mm cathode diameter and 0.8 mm circular anode diameter. In the example of the $3\times3$ matrix, it is shown that the gas multiplication of the central cell depends on the potentials at the anodes of the peripheral cells, the drift electrode, the forming rings, and the surrounding metal parts of the structure. The amplitude characteristics were measured when the MMPC was filled with mixtures of 96.3\% Ar + 3.7\% Xe and 90\% Ar + 10\% CH$_4$ at pressures of 620 Torr and 62 Torr. The calibration was carried out with $α$-particles and $γ$-quanta from a $^{238}$Pu source. For photons with energies of 7.5 keV, a resolution of 26\% was obtained. It is shown that, based on MMPC, it is possible to fabricate recording surfaces of arbitrary configuration.
The spherical proportional counter is a versatile gaseous detector with physics applications ranging from rare event searches to fast neutron spectroscopy. In its simplest form, the detector operates with a single channel read-out, and uses pulse-shape information to reconstruct the interaction radius, which is used for background discrimination and target volume definition. Recent developments in the read-out instrumentation have enabled the use of a multi-anode read-out structure, ACHINOS. The multiple anodes provide information about the interaction position which, coupled with the radial i…
The spherical proportional counter is a gaseous detector used in a variety of applications, including direct dark matter and neutrino-less double beta decay searches. The ACHINOS multianode structure is a read-out technology that overcomes the limitations of single-anode read-out structures for large-size detectors and operation under high pressure. A resistive ACHINOS is presented, where the 3D printed central component is coated in a Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) layer. The production and testing of the structure, in terms of stability and resolution, is described. Further applications in fundam…

Detailed study of MWPC in terms of gain, energy and timing resolution and efficiency measurements have been performed. The detector has been operated using Ar/CO$_{2}$ gas mixtures with 70:30 and 90:10 ratio. Energy spectrum of $^{55}$Fe X-ray source is obtained f…
The spherical proportional counter is a novel gaseous detector with numerous applications, including direct dark matter searches and neutron spectroscopy. The strengths of the Geant4 and Garfield++ toolkits are combined to create a simulation framework for spherical proportional counters. The interface is implemented by introducing Garfield++ classes within a Geant4 application. Simulated muon, electron, and photon signals are presented, and the effects of gas mixture composition and anode support structure on detector response are discussed.
We describe the first tests with a new proportional gas detector. Its geometry consists in slits opened in a copper metallized kapton foil with 30 micron anode strips suspended in these openings. In this way the multiplication process is similar to a standard MSGC. The fundamental difference is the absence of an insulating substrate around the anode. Also the material budget is significantly reduced, and the problems related to charging-up or polarization are removed. Ageing properties of this detector are under study.
A new anode support structure for the spherical proportional counter is presented that incorporates a resistive correction electrode made of glass. This electrode improves the electric field homogeneity versus angle while suppressing the probability and intensity of sparks compared to non-resistive alternatives. The configuration of the correction electrode was optimised with simulations. Such support structures have been constructed and measurements have demonstrated homogeneous response of the detector and operational stability. A measurement of the resistivity of the glass used is also pres…
The third phase of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) experiment added an array of 3He proportional counters to the detector. The purpose of this Neutral Current Detection (NCD) array was to observe neutrons resulting from neutral-current solar neutrino-deuteron interactions. We have developed a detailed simulation of the current pulses from the NCD array proportional counters, from the primary neutron capture on 3He through the NCD array signal-processing electronics. This NCD array Monte Carlo simulation was used to model the alpha-decay background in SNO's third-phase 8B solar-neutrino …
In this study, we present a low cost and commercially available data acquisition system (DAQ) for an ordinary low alpha proportional counter. By employing this DAQ system and aid of a simple physical model, we can easily rule out the common disadvantage of proportional type low alpha counters, such as sensitive to electromagnetic interference and vibration. The obtained results demonstrated that this method has improved the capability of an ordinary low alpha counter and even makes it easier to operate in a worse ground-loop laboratory.
Development of ultra low background gas proportional counters has made the contribution from naturally occurring radioactive isotopes -- primarily $α$ and $β$ activity in the uranium and thorium decay chains -- inconsequential to instrumental sensitivity levels when measurements are performed in above ground surface laboratories. Simple lead shielding is enough to mitigate against gamma rays as gas proportional counters are already relatively insensitive to naturally occurring gamma radiation. The dominant background in these surface laboratory measurements using ultra low background gas propo…
We present a straightforward method for particle identification and background rejection in $^3$He proportional counters for use in neutron detection. By measuring the risetime and pulse height of the preamplifier signals, one may define a region in the risetime versus pulse height space where the events are predominately from neutron interactions. For six proportional counters surveyed in a low-background environment, we demonstrate the ability to reject alpha-particle events with an efficiency of 99%. By applying the same method, we also show an effective rejection of microdischarge noise ev…
The study of low-yield effects requires not only good quality of the original data but also puts high requirements for their processing procedures to increase the efficiency of the selection of useful events. The exploiting of the large cylindrical proportional counter's electrostatic topology allows improving the extrapolation of information about the primary ionization of a multipoint event. Long-term calibration measurements with an external $^{109}$Cd-source allowed the development of a new method for analyzing the pulse shape from a sizeable proportional counter. Optimized analysis of the…
Precise in-situ measurements of the neutron flux in underground laboratories is crucial for direct dark matter searches, as neutron induced backgrounds can mimic the typical dark matter signal. The development of a novel neutron spectroscopy technique using Spherical Proportional Counters is investigated. The detector is operated with nitrogen and is sensitive to both fast and thermal neutrons through the $^{14}$N(n, $α$)$^{11}$B and $^{14}$N(n, p)$^{14}$C reactions. This method holds potential to be a safe, inexpensive, effective, and reliable alternative to $^3$He-based detectors. Measuremen…
A new method for correcting the charge signal from the large proportional counter is proposed. The correction method makes it possible to take into account the loss of primary ionization electrons in the presence of weakly increasing micro impurities of electronegative gases during long-term measurements. It allows increasing the efficiency of the selection of useful events and thereby increasing the sensitivity to $2\nu2K$-decay in $^{124}$Xe at the level of $2\times10^{22}$ from over six years of measurements using a large proportional counter. Analysis of the calibration data, taking into a…
A kind of analysis of waveform of voltage pulse in small proportional counter is described. The technique is based on deconvolution of recorded pulse with a response function of the counter. It allows one to restore a projection of the track of initial ionization to the radius of the counter, or a charge collection function.
A pulse shape analysis algorithm and a method for suppressing the noise component of signals from a large copper proportional counter in the experiment aimed at searching for 2K capture of Kr-78 are described. These signals correspond to a compound event with different numbers of charge clusters due to from primary ionization is formed by these signals. A technique for separating single- and multipoint events and determining the charge in individual clusters is presented. Using the Daubechies wavelets in multiresolutional signal analysis, it is possible to increase the sensitivity and the reso…
The spherical proportional counter is a large volume gaseous detector which finds application in several fields, including direct Dark Matter searches. When the detector is filled with nitrogen it becomes an effective neutron spectrometer thanks to the $^{14}$N(n,$\mathrmα$)$^{11}$B and $^{14}$N(n,p)$^{14}$C reactions. Nitrogen, however, is a challenging operating gas for proportional counters and requires a high electric field strength to gas pressure ratio. Benefiting from the latest advances in spherical proportional counter instrumentation and simulation techniques, we report first neutron…
The energy deposition spectra of $^{37}$Ar and $^{71}$Ge in a miniature proportional counter are measured and compared in detail to the model response simulated with Geant4. A certain modification of the Geant4 code, making it possible to trace the deexcitation of atomic shells properly, is suggested. Modified Geant4 is able to reproduce a response of particle detectors in detail in the keV energy range. This feature is very important for the laboratory experiments that search for massive sterile neutrinos as well as for dark matter searches that employ direct detection of recoil nuclei. This …
NEWS-G (New Experiments With Spheres-Gas) is an experiment aiming to shine a light on the dark matter conundrum using a novel gaseous detector, the Spherical Proportional Counter. NEWS-G uses light noble gases, such as hydrogen, helium, and neon, as targets, to search for light dark matter down to the sub-GeV/c${}^{2}$ mass region. The first detector of NEWS-G, is a 60 cm diameter sphere already operated in the Underground Laboratory of Modane, while the full-scale detector, 140 cm in diameter, will be installed in SNOLab at the end of this year. In this work, we present the first NEWS-G resul…
A method of measurements of the environmental neutron background at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory of the INR RAS are described. Measurements were done by using of a proportional counter filled with mixture of Ar(2 at)+$^3$He(4 at). The results obtained at the surface and the underground laboratory of the BNO INR RAS are presented. It is shown that a neutron background in the underground laboratory at the 4900 m w.e. depth is decreased by $\sim 260$ times without any special shield in a comparison with the Earth surface. A neutron flux density in the 5-1323.5~cm air height region is constant …
We present low energy recoil detection results in the keV energy region, from measurements performed with the Spherical Proportional Counter (SPC). An ${}^{241}Am-{}^{9}{Be}$ fast neutron source is used in order to obtain neutron-nucleus elastic scattering events inside the gaseous volume of the detector. The detector performance in the $keV$ energy region was resolved by observing the $5.9\ keV$ line of a ${}^{55}Fe$ X-ray source, with energy resolution of $9\%$ ($σ$). The toolkit GEANT4 was used to simulate the irradiation of the detector by an ${}^{241}Am-{}^{9}{Be}$ source, while SRIM was …
Proportional scintillation counters (PSCs), both single- and dual-phase, can measure the scintillation (S1) and ionization (S2) channels from particle interactions within the detector volume. The signal obtained from these detectors depends first on the physics of the medium (the initial scintillation and ionization), and second how the physics of the detector manipulates the resulting photons and liberated electrons. In this paper we develop a model of the detector physics that incorporates event topology, detector geometry, electric field configuration, purity, optical properties of componen…
Neutron spectroscopy is an invaluable tool for many scientific and industrial applications, including underground Dark Matter searches. Neutron-induced backgrounds produced by cosmic ray muons and the cavern radioactivity can mimic the expected Dark Matter signal. However, existing neutron detection methods have several drawbacks and limitations, thus measurements remain elusive. A promising new approach to neutron spectroscopy is the use of a nitrogen-filled spherical proportional counter that exploits the $^{14}$N(n,$α$)$^{11}$B and $^{14}$N(n, p)$^{14}$C reactions. This is a safe, inexpensi…
We report the first results from an X-ray polarimeter with a micropattern gas proportional counter using an amorphous silicon active matrix readout. With 100% polarized X-rays at 4.5 keV, we obtain a modulation factor of 0.33 +/- 0.03, confirming previous reports of the high polarization sensitivity of a finely segmented pixel proportional counter. The detector described here has a geometry suitable for the focal plane of an astronomical X-ray telescope. Amorphous silicon readout technology will enable additional extensions and improvements.
First result of experiment for searching of 2K-capture of Xe-124 with the large-volume copper proportional counter is given. The 12 litre sample with 63.3% (44 g) of Xe-124 was used in measurements. The limit on the half-life of Xe-124 with regard to 2K(2ν)-capture for the ground state of Te-124 has been found: T_{1/2} > 4.67x10^{20} y (90% C.L.). A sample with volume 52 L comprising of Xe-124 (10.6 L - 58.6 g) and Xe-126 (14.1 L - 79.3 g) will used at the next step of the experiment to increase a sensitivity of 2K-caption of Xe-124 registration. In this case sensitivity to the investigated pr…
We present a novel concept of proportional gas amplification for the read-out of the spherical proportional counter. The standard single-ball read-out presents limitations for large diameter spherical detectors and high pressure operations. We have developed a multi-ball read-out system which consists of several balls sitting at a fixed distance from the center of the spherical vessel. Such a module can tune the volume electric field at the desired value and can also provide detector segmentation with individual ball read-out. In the latter case the large volume of the vessel becomes a spheric…
We present the results of the measurements of the detection efficiency for a 4.7 Å neutron beam incident upon a detector incorporating a stack of up to five MultiWire Proportional Counters (MWPC) with Boron-coated cathodes. The cathodes were made of Aluminum and had a surface exhibiting millimeter-deep V-shaped grooves of 45°, upon which the thin Boron film was deposited by DC magnetron sputtering. The incident neutrons interacting with the converter layer deposited on the sidewalls of the grooves have a higher capture probability, owing to the larger effective absorption film thickness. This …
The experimental search for solar hadronic axions is started at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory of the Institute for Nuclear Researches Russian Academy of Science. It is assumed that axions are created in the Sun during M1-transition between the first thermally excited level at 9.4 keV and the ground state in Kr-83. The experiment is based on axion detection via resonant absorption process by the same nucleus in the detector. The big copper proportional counter filled with krypton is used to detect signals from axions. The experimental setup is situated in the deep underground low background l…
The possible use of a Spherical Proportional Counter for the search of neutrinoless double beta decay is investigated in the R2D2 R&D project. Dual charge and scintillation light readout may improve the detector performance. Tests were carried out with pure argon at 1.1 bar using a 6x6 mm2 silicon photomultiplier. Scintillation light was used for the first time to trigger in a spherical proportional counter. The measured drift time is in excellent agreement with the expectations from simulations. Furthermore the light signal emitted during the avalanche development exhibits features that could…
A novel large volume spherical proportional counter, recently developed, is used for neutron measurements. Gas mixtures of $N_{2}$ with $C_{2}H_{6}$ and pure $N_{2}$ are studied for thermal and fast neutron detection, providing a new way for the neutron spectroscopy. The neutrons are detected via the ${}^{14}N(n, p)C^{14}$ and ${}^{14}N(n, α)B^{11}$ reactions. Here we provide studies of the optimum gas mixture, the gas pressure and the most appropriate high voltage supply on the sensor of the detector in order to achieve the maximum amplification and better resolution. The detector is tested f…

We can name between many others Dark Matter searches, low level radon and neutron counting or low energy neutrino detection from supernovas or nuclear reactors via neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering. In this context, this works will present the characterization of a spherical detector of 1 meter diameter using two argon-based mixtures (with methane an…
The Spherical gaseous detector (or Spherical Proportional Counter, SPC) has a broad range of applications. In this work, we will focus on the light WIMP Dark Matter particle search, that is, below a few GeV. The NEWS-G collaboration operates a 60 cm diameter detector at Modane underground laboratory (LSM). Running the detector at 3 b of Neon gas, some competitive limits have been set down to 0.5 GeV WIMP mass thanks to an energy threshold of around 100 eV. To reach better performances, the next generation of SPC (140cm), NEWS-G SNO, is under construction. We will focus here on the fabrication …

In the field of neutron scattering science, a large variety of instruments require detectors for thermal and cold neutrons. Helium-3 has been one of the main actors in thermal and cold neutron detection for many years. Nowadays neutron facilities around the world are pushing their technologies to increase the available flux delivered at the instruments, this enables a completely new science landscape. Complementary with the increasing available flux, a better signal-to-background ratio (S/B) enables to perform new types of measurements. To this aim, this manuscript re-examines the background s…
We discuss over the energy resolution we measured for several Helium-3 proportional tubes. The energy resolution of a Helium-3 detector is strictly related to the discrimination between gamma-rays and neutrons that can be achieved. We also discuss the different contributions to the energy resolution; these provide information about how the helium-3 counters operate. We measured the spatial resolution of position sensitive Helium-3 detectors in order to quantify and understand the limit that can be achieved with this technology. The gamma-ray sensitivity is the efficiency for miscounting a gamm…
This paper introduces in full detail a methodology for the measurement of neutron yield and the necessary efficiency calibration, to be applied to the intensity measurement of neutron bursts where individual neutrons are not resolved in time, for any given moderated neutron proportional counter array. The method allows efficiency calibration employing the detection neutrons arising from an isotopic neutron source. Full statistical study of the procedure is descripted, taking into account contributions arising from counting statistics, piling-up statistics of real detector pulse-height spectra …
A prototype quasi-parasitic thermal neutron beam monitor based on isotropic neutron scattering from a thin natural vanadium foil and standard $^3$He proportional counters is conceptualized, designed, simulated, calibrated, and commissioned. The European Spallation Source designed to deliver the highest integrated neutron flux originating from a pulsed source is currently under construction in Lund, Sweden. The effort to investigate a vanadium-based neutron beam monitor was triggered by a list of requirements for Beam Monitors permanently placed in the ESS neutron beams in order to provide reli…
