Patterns and periods of charge density waves (CDW) in transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit complex phase diagrams that depend on pressure, temperature, metal intercalation, or chalcogen alloying. The phase diagrams have been understood in the context of phenomenological Landau free energy model, but the microscopic mechanisms underlying them are still not clear. Here, we present a new microscopic theory based on the interatomic potential, and have explicitly calculated temperature-dependent phase diagrams using the interatomic potential extracted from first-principles calculations. With detailed atomic structures, the calculated phase diagram of monolayer H-TaSe2 successfully reproduces the experimental features such as commensurate lock-in and stripe phase. Our work shows the complex behaviors of charge density wave are originated from the relatively simple structure of the interatomic potential and elucidates the role of lattice anharmonicity on the CDW phase transition.
Interatomic potentials have been widely used in atomistic simulations such as molecular dynamics. Recently, frameworks to construct accurate interatomic potentials that combine a systematic set of density functional theory (DFT) calculations with machine learning techniques have been proposed. One of these methods is to use compressed sensing to derive a sparse representation for the interatomic potential. This facilitates the control of the accuracy of interatomic potentials. In this study, we demonstrate the applicability of compressed sensing to deriving the interatomic potential of ten ele…
Two-dimensional (2D) lateral heterojunctions of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have become a reality in recent years. Semiconducting TMDC layers in their common H -structure have a nonzero in-plane electric polarization, which is a topological invariant. We show by means of first-principles calculations that lateral 2D heterojunctions between TMDCs with a different polarization generate one-dimensional (1D) metallic states at the junction, even in cases where the different materials are joined epitaxially. The metallicity does not depend upon structural details, and is explained from…
In this paper, the interaction of few tens of atoms containing gold nanoclusters with two dimensional nanosheets of transition metal dichalcogenides nanosheets has been explored. The gold nanoclusters have been synthesized using chemical reduction method in presence of protein molecules as stabilizing agent. The transition metal dichalcogenides nanosheets of molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) has been chemically exfoliated. Different microscopic and optical spectroscopic tools have been used for characterizing the physical properties of the gold nanoclusters and the two dimensional nanosheets of M…
Exploring an upper limit of magnetic anisotropy in two-dimensional materials, such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides, is at the heart of spintronics research. Herein, an atomic-scale perpendicular magnetic anisotropy up to an order of 100 meV per atom, which is far beyond the ordinarily obtained value in graphene and pristine transition metal dichalcogenides, is demonstrated in individual ruthenium and osmium adatoms at a monosulfur vacancy in molybdenum disulfide. We further propose a phenomenological model where a spin state transition that involves hybridization between molyb…
The Weyl semimetal requires the breaking of either the time-reversal symmetry (TRS) or the lattice inversion symmetry. When the TRS and inversion symmetry coexist, a pair of degenerate Weyl points may exist, leading to the related Dirac semimetal phase. In other words, a Dirac semimetallic state can be regarded as two copies of Weyl semimetal states. In this dissertation, we study tellurium based compounds like the Weyl semimetal candidate MoTe2 and the Dirac semimetal candidate PtTe2 within the transition metal dichalcogenides family.
Laser ablation is often explained by a two-temperature model (TTM) with different electron and lattice temperatures. To realize a classical molecular dynamics simulation of the TTM, we propose an extension of the embedded atom method to construct an interatomic potential that is dependent on the electron temperature. This method is applied to copper, and its validity is demonstrated by comparison of several physical properties, such as the energy-volume curve, phonon dispersion, electronic heat capacity, ablation threshold, and mean square displacement of atoms, with those of finite-temperatur…
Nanoribbons of MoS$_2$ present a unique electronic structure that consists of a semiconducting bulk bounded by metallic edges; same holds for other Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs) (Mo-,W-,S$_{2}$,Se$_{2}$). We perform first-principles calculations for TMD nanoribbons with reconstructed zig-zag metal terminated edges that contain chalcogen adatoms. All nanorobbons have possitive edge energies when the chemical potential of chalcogens is close to the energy of solids, and negative edge energies for high chemical potential. The reconstruction with two chalcogen adatoms is expected to be t…
Using first-principles calculations we show that the band gap of bilayer sheets of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) can be reduced smoothly by applying vertical compressive pressure. These materials undergo a universal reversible semiconductor to metal (S-M) transition at a critical pressure. S-M transition is attributed to lifting the degeneracy of the bands at fermi level caused by inter-layer interactions via charge transfer from metal to chalcogens. The S-M transition can be reproduced even after incorporating the band gap corrections using hybrid functionals and GW m…
We investigate the chemical bonding characteristics of the transition metal dichalcogenides based on their static and dynamical atomic charges within Density Functional Theory. The dynamical charges of the trigonal transition metal dichalcogenides are anomalously large, while in their hexagonal counterparts, their sign is even counterintuitive i.e. the transition metal takes the negative charge. This phenomenon cannot be understood simply in terms of a change in the static atomic charge as it results from a local change of polarization. We present our theoretical understanding of these phenome…
We carry out a systematic study of the thermal conductivity of four single-layer transition metal dichalcogenides, MX$_2$ (M = Mo, W; X = S, Se) from first-principles by solving the Boltzmann Transport Equation (BTE). We compare three different theoretical frameworks to solve the BTE beyond the Relaxation Time Approximation (RTA), using the same set of interatomic force constants computed within density functional theory (DFT), finding that the RTA severely underpredicts the thermal conductivity of MS$_2$ materials. Calculations of the different phonon scattering relaxation times of the main c…
Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are gaining increasing attention as alternative to graphene for their very high potential in optoelectronics applications. Here we consider two prototypical metallic 2D TMDs, NbSe$_2$ and TaS$_2$. Using a first-principles approach, we investigate the properties of the localised intraband $d$ plasmon that cannot be modelled on the basis of the homogeneous electron gas. Finally, we discuss the effects of the reduced dimensionality on the plasmon dispersion through the interplay between interband transitions and local-field effects. This res…
Strain engineering in single-layer semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides aims to tune their bandgap energy and to modify their optoelectronic properties by the application of external strain. In this paper we study transition metal dichalcogenides monolayers deposited on polymeric substrates under the application of biaxial strain, both tensile and compressive. We can control the amount of biaxial strain applied by letting the substrate thermally expand or compress by changing the substrate temperature. After modelling the substrate-dependent strain transfer process with a finite ele…
We theoretically investigate detuning-dependent properties of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). In contrast to HHG in conventional materials, TMDCs show both parallel and perpendicular emissions with respect to the incident electric field. We find that such an anomalous emission can be artificially controlled by the frequency detuning of the incident electric fields, i.e., the parallel and perpendicular HHG can be strongly enhanced by multiphoton resonances. This peculiar phenomenon would provide a way for controlling HHG in TMDCs and s…
We have studied the optical conductivity of two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (STMDC) using ab-initio density functional theory (DFT). We find that this class of materials presents large optical response due to the phenomenon of band nesting. The tendency towards band nesting is enhanced by the presence of van Hove singularities in the band structure of these materials. Given that 2D crystals are atomically thin and naturally transparent, our results show that it is possible to have strong photon-electron interactions even in 2D
}We present a formalism for extending the second moment tight-binding model, incorporating ferro- and anti-ferromagn etic interaction terms which are needed for the FeCr system. For antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic materials, an explicit additional variable representing the spin is required. In a mean-field approximation this spin can be eliminated, and the potential becomes explicitly temperature dependent. For ferromagnetic interactions, this degree of freedom can be eliminated, and the formalism reduces to the embedded atom method (EAM) and we show the equivale nce of existing EAM potenti…
In this letter we study the valley degeneracy splitting of the transition-metal dichalcogenides monolayer by first-principles calculations. The local magnetic moments are introduced into the system when the transition-metal atoms are adsorbed to the monolayer surface. Zeeman effect arising from the local magnetic moment at transition-metal atom sites lifts the valley degeneracy. Anomalous charge, spin and valley Hall Effects can be accessed due to valley splitting when we can only excite carriers of one valley. The valley splitting depends on the direction of magnetization and thus can be tune…
We report a determination of the complex in-plane dielectric function of monolayers of four transition metal dichalcogenides: MoS2, MoSe2, WS2 and WSe2, for photon energies from 1.5 - 3 eV. The results were obtained from reflection spectra using a Kramers-Kronig constrained variational analysis. From the dielectric functions, we obtain the absolute absorbance of the monolayers. We also provide a comparison of the dielectric function for the monolayers with the corresponding bulk materials.
We report a first-principle theoretical study of a monolayer-thick lateral heterostructure (LH) joining two different transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC): NbS2 and WSe2. The NbS2//WSe2 LH can be considered a prototypical example of a conducting(NbS2)/semiconducting(WSe2) two-dimensional (2D) hybrid heterojunction. We first generate and validate realistic atomistic models of the NbS2//WSe2 LH, derive their band structure and subject it to a fragment decomposition and electrostatic potential analysis to extract a simple but quantitative model of this interfacial system. Stoichiometric fluctu…
We study the effect of point-defect chalcogen vacancies on the optical properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides using ab initio GW and Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations. We find that chalcogen vacancies introduce unoccupied in-gap states and occupied resonant defect states within the quasiparticle continuum of the valence band. These defect states give rise to a number of strongly-bound defect excitons and hybridize with excitons of the pristine system, reducing the valley-selective circular dichroism. Our results suggest a pathway to tune spin-valley polarization and other …
The dynamical behavior of liquids is frequently characterized by the fragility, which can be defined from the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity, η. For a strong liquid, the activation energy for η changes little with cooling towards the glass transition temperature, Tg. The change is much greater in fragile liquids, with the activation energy becoming very large near Tg. While fragility is widely recognized as an important concept, for example believed to play an important role in glass formation, the microscopic origin of fragility is poorly understood. Here, we present new experi…
We present a microscopic theory of neutral excitons and charged excitons (trions) in monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides, including molybdenum disulfide. Our theory is based on an effective mass model of excitons and trions, parametrized by ab initio calculations and incorporating a proper treatment of screening in two dimensions. The calculated exciton binding energies are in good agreement with high-level many-body computations based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Furthermore, our calculations for the more complex trion species compare very favorably with recent experimental meas…
In search of an improved strategy to form low resistance contacts to MoS2 and related semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, we use ab initio density functional electronic structure calculations in order to determine the equilibrium geometry and electronic structure of MoO3/MoS2 and MoO2/MoS2 bilayers. Our results indicate that, besides a rigid band shift associated with charge transfer, the presence of molybdenum oxide modifies the electronic structure of MoS2 very little. We find that the charge transfer in the bilayer provides a sufficient degree of hole doping to MoS2, resulting …
Rich valleytronics and diverse defect-induced or interlayer pre-bandgap excitonics have been extensively studied in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), a system with fascinating optical physics. However, more intense high-energy absorption peaks (~ 3 eV) above the bandgaps used to be long ignored and their underlying physical origin remains to be unveiled. Here, we employ momentum resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy to measure the dispersive behaviors of the valley excitons and intense higher-energy peaks at finite momenta. Combined with accurate Bethe Salpeter equation calculatio…
We evaluate the tunneling short-circuit current density $J_{TU}$ in a $p$-$i$-$n$ solar cell in which the transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructure (MoS$_2$/WS$_2$ superlattice) is embedded in the intrinsic $i$ region. The effects of varying well and barrier widths, Fermi energy levels and number of quantum wells in the $i$ region on $J_{TU}$ are examined. A similar analysis is performed for the thermionic current $J_{TH}$ that arises due to the escape and recapture of charge carriers between adjacent potential wells in the $i$-region. The interplay between $J_{TU}$ and $J_{TH}$ in the t…
Tunnel field effect transistors (TFETs) based on vertical stacking of two dimensional materials are of interest for low-power logic devices. The monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with sizable band gaps show promise in building p-n junctions (couples) for TFET applications. Band alignment information is essential for realizing broken gap junctions with excellent electron tunneling efficiencies. Promising couples composed of monolayer TMDs are suggested to be VIB-MeX2 (Me= W, Mo; X= Te, Se) as the n-type source and IVB-MeX2 (Me = Zr, Hf; X= S, Se) as the p-type drain by density f…
Transition-metal dichalcogenide IrTe2 has attracted attention because of striped lattice, charge ordering and superconductivity. We have investigated the surface structure of IrTe2, using low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). A complex striped lattice modulations as a function of temperature is observed, which shows hysteresis between cooling and warming. While the bulk 5x1 and 8x1 phases appear at high temperatures, the surface ground state has the 6x1 phase, not seen in the bulk, and the surface transition temperatures are distinct from the bulk. The…
In the crystal growth of transition metal dichalcogenides by the Chemical Vapor Transport method (CVT), the choice of the transport agent plays a key role. We have investigated the effect of various chemical elements and compounds on the growth of TiSe2, MoSe2, TaS2 and TaSe2 and found that pure I2 is the most suitable for growing TiSe2, whereas transition metal chlorides perform best with Mo- and Ta- chalcogenides. The use of TaCl5 as a transport agent in the CVT process allows to selectively growth either polymorph of TaS2 and TaSe2 and the optimum growth conditions are reported. Moreover, b…
We theoretically investigate the orientation dependence of high-harmonic generation (HHG) in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). We find that, unlike conventional solid-state and atomic layered materials such as graphene, both parallel and perpendicular emissions with respect to the incident electric field exist in TMDCs. Interestingly, the parallel (perpendicular) emissions principally contain only odd-(even-) order harmonics. Both harmonics show the same periodicity in the crystallographic orientations but opposite phases. These peculiar behaviors can be understood on the bas…
Two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) can withstand a large deformation without fracture or inelastic relaxation, making them attractive for application in novel strain-engineered and flexible electronic and optoelectronic devices. In this study, we characterize the mechanical response of monolayer group VI TMDs to large elastic deformation using first-principles density functional theory calculations. We find that the ultimate strength and the overall stress response of these 2D materials is strongly influenced by their chemical composition and loading di…
We develop parameters for the interlayer Kolmogorov-Crespi (KC) potential to study structural features of four transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs): MoS$_2$, WS$_2$, MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$. We also propose a mixing rule to extend the parameters to their heterostructures. Moiré superlattices of twisted bilayer TMDs have been recently shown to host shear solitons, topological point defects and ultraflatbands close to the valence band edge. Performing structural relaxations at the DFT level is a major bottleneck in the study of these systems. We show that the parametrized KC potential can be use…
Laser-assisted chemical modification is demonstrated on ultra-thin transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), locally replacing selenium by sulfur atoms. The photo-conversion process takes place in a controlled reactive gas environment and the heterogeneous reaction rates are monitored via in situ real-time Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The spatially localized photo-conversion resulted in a heterogeneous TMD structure, with chemically distinct domains, where the initial high crystalline quality of the film is not affected during the process. This has been further confirmed via tran…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) show an optimal surface-to-volume ratio and are thus promising candidates for novel molecule sensor devices. It was recently predicted that a certain class of molecules exhibiting a large dipole moment can be detected through the activation of optically inaccessible (dark) excitonic states in absorption spectra of tungsten-based TMDs. In this work, we investigate the molecule signatures in photoluminescence spectra in dependence of a number of different experimentally accessible quantities, such as excitation density, temperature as well as mol…
Most III-nitride semiconductors are grown on non-lattice-matched substrates like sapphire or silicon due to the extreme difficulty of obtaining a native GaN substrate. We show that several layered transition-metal dichalcogenides are closely lattice matched to GaN and report the growth of GaN on a range of such layered materials. We report detailed studies of the growth of GaN on mechanically-exfoliated flakes WS$_2$ and MoS$_2$ by metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy. Structural and optical characterization show that strain-free, single-crystal islands of GaN are obtained on the underlying chalc…
Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (MX2)/metal oxide heterostructures have shown unique physical properties, making them promising materials for various applications ranging from photocatalysis to solar energy conversion. Understanding the interfacial interactions is highly desirable for designing these heterostructures having excellent performance. Here we systematically study the interfacial interaction in monolayer MX2 (M=Mo, W; X=S, Se)/CeO2 heterostructures and its effects on electronic and optical properties by density functional theory. It is found that the interfacial int…
In many paradigmatic materials, like Transition Metal Dichalcogenides, the role played by the spin degrees of freedom is as important as the one played by the electron-electron interaction. Thus an accurate treatment of the two effects and of their interaction is necessary for an accurate and predictive study of the optical and electronic properties of these materials. Despite the GW-BSE approach correctly accounts for electronic correlations the spin-orbit coupling effect is often neglected or treated perturbatively. Recently spinorial formulations of GW-BSE have become available in different…
The problem of screening the Coulomb interaction between charge carriers in type II heterostructures based on transition metal dichalcogenides is Analytically solved. At a sufficiently high density of charge carriers, the density dependence of the interlayer exciton energy is obtained. The energy of the interlayer exciton tends to zero in the metal--insulator transition point. The presented scheme of calculations makes it possible to find the temperature dependence of the density of this transition.
Machine-learning interatomic potential (MLIP) has been of growing interest as a useful method to describe the energetics of systems of interest. In the present study, we examine the accuracy of linearized pairwise MLIPs and angular-dependent MLIPs for 31 elemental metals. Using all of the optimal MLIPs for 31 elemental metals, we show the robustness of the linearized frameworks, the general trend of the predictive power of MLIPs and the limitation of pairwise MLIPs. As a result, we obtain accurate MLIPs for all 31 elements using the same linearized framework. This indicates that the use of num…
The possibility of the formation of an electron-hole liquid in the type II heterostructures based on monolayers (bilayers) of transition metal dichalcogenides is considered. It is indicated that additional valleys in the conduction band, which are present in bilayers, are required for its observation. The binding energy of the interlayer exciton is found by the variation method. An analytical formula is found for the shape of the recombination line of the electron-hole liquid.
Optical properties of transition metal dichalcogenides monolayers are controlled by the Wannier-Mott excitons forming a series of $1s$, $2s$, $2p$,... hydrogen-like states. We develop the theory of the excited excitonic states energy spectrum fine structure. We predict that $p$- and $s$-shell excitons are mixed due to the specific $D_{3h}$ point symmetry of the transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers. Hence, both $s$- and $p$-shell excitons are active in both single- and two-photon processes providing an efficient mechanism of second harmonic generation. The corresponding contribution to th…
We examine the excitonic properties of layered configurations of low dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (LTMDCs) using the fractional dimensional space approach. The binding energies of the exciton, trion and biexciton in LTMDCs of varying layers are analyzed, and linked to the dimensionality parameter $α$, which provides insight into critical electro-optical properties (relative oscillator strength, absorption spectrum, exciton-exciton interaction) of the material systems. The usefulness of $α$ is highlighted by its independence of the physical mechanisms underlying the confinement …
Ground state diffusion Monte Carlo is used to investigate the binding energies and carrier probability distributions of excitons, trions, and biexcitons in a variety of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide materials. We compare these results to approximate variational calculations, as well as to analogous Monte Carlo calculations performed with simplified carrier interaction potentials. Our results highlight the successes and failures of approximate approaches as well as the physical features that determine the stability of small carrier complexes in monolayer transition metal dicha…
The two dimensional layered transition metal dichalcogenides provide new opportunities in future valley based information processing and also provide ideal platform to study excitonic effects. At the center of various device physics toward their possible electronic and optoelectronic applications is understanding the dynamical evolution of various many particle electronic states, especially exciton which dominates the optoelectronic response of TMDs, under the novel context of valley degree of freedom. Here, we provide a brief review of experimental advances in using helicity resolved ultrafas…
The effect of doping on the parameters of an electron-hole liquid (EHL) in heterostructures based on transition metal dichalcogenides is studied. The phase diagram of the EHL is constructed. It is shown that for the formation of a high-temperature tightly bound EHL, as well as for the transition from the semiconducting (exciton) state to the semimetallic one (electron-hole plasma/liquid), it is advantageous to dope the energy band with larger number of valleys. The transition from trion gas to electron-hole plasma is investigated using the modified Mott criterion and variational calculation wi…
Electron valleys in transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers drive novel physics and allow designing multifunctional architectures for applications. We propose to manipulate the electron valleys in these systems for spin/valley filter and valve devices through band engineering. Instead of the magnetic proximity effect that has been extensively used in previous studies, in our strategy, the electron valleys are directly coupled to the spin-polarized states of the two-dimensional ferromagnets. We find that this coupling results in a valley-selective gap opening due to the spin-momentum locking…
We report on a possible optical tuning of the spin Hall conductivity in mono-layer transition metal dichalcogenides. Light beams of frequencies much higher than the energy scale of the system (the \textit{off-resonant} condition) does not excite electrons but rearranges the band structure. The rearrangement is quantitatively established using the Floquet formalism. For such a system of mono-layer transition metal dichalcogenides, the spin Hall conductivity (calculated with the Kubo expression in presence of disorder) exhibits a drop at higher frequencies and lower intensities. Finally, we comp…
We report on fabrication of novel field-effect transistors (FETs) based on transition metal dichalcogenides. The unique structure of single crystals of these layered inorganic semiconductors enables fabrication of FETs with intrinsically low field-effect threshold and high charge carrier mobility, comparable to that in the best single-crystal Si FETs (up to 500 cm2/Vs for the p-type conductivity in the WSe2-based FETs at room temperature). These novel FETs demonstrate ambipolar operation. Owing to mechanical flexibility, they hold potential for applications in "flexible" electronics.
It is shown that the three-fold rotational symmetry in transition metal dichalcogenides leads to a Coulomb induced renormalization of the effective electron and hole masses near the $K$-points of the Brillouin zone. The magnitude of the renormalization depends on the dielectric configuration. The effective exciton mass $m=0.4 m_0$ of a freely suspended MoS$_2$ monolayer changes to $m= 0.35 m_0$ with hBN encapsulation. The mass renormalization increases the excitonic binding energy and reduces the exciton diamagnetic shift and cyclotron frequency. Detailed comparisons with high field measuremen…
We present a microscopic study on higher excitonic states in transition metal dichalcogenides in the presence of disorder. We show that the geometric phase cancels the degeneration of 2s and 2p states and that a significant disorder-induced coupling of bright and dark states offers a strategy to circumvent optical selection rules. As a prove, we show a direct fingerprint of dark 2p states in absorption spectra of WS$_2$. The predicted softening of optical selection rules through exciton-disorder coupling is of general nature and therefore applicable to related two-dimensional semiconductors.
Traditional ferroelectrics undergo thermally-induced phase transitions whereby their structural symmetry increases. The associated higher-symmetry structure is dubbed {\em paraelectric}. Ferroelectric transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers have been recently shown to become paraelectric, but not much has been said of the atomistic configuration of such a phase. As discovered through numerical calculations that include molecular dynamics here, their paraelectricity can only be ascribed to a time average of ferroelectric phases with opposing intrinsic polarizations, whose switching requires ma…
It is shown that the strong Coulomb coupling in intrinsic suspended semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides can exceed the critical value needed for an excitonic ground state. The dipole-allowed optical excitations then correspond to intra-excitonic transitions such that the optically bright excitonic transitions near the Dirac points have a $p$-like symmetry whereas the $s$-like states are dipole forbidden. The large intrinsic coupling strength seems to be a generic property of the semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides and strong Coulomb-coupling signatures in the form of th…
We present a theory that elucidates the major momentum and spin relaxation processes for electrons, holes and hot excitons in monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides. We expand on spin flips induced by flexural phonons and show that the spin relaxation is ultrafast for electrons in free-standing membranes while being mitigated in supported membranes. This behavior due to interaction with flexural phonons is universal in two-dimensional membranes that respect mirror symmetry and it leads to a counterintuitive inverse relation between mobility and spin relaxation.
In a multilayer comprising ferromagnet and heavy metal, in-plane carrier spin is induced by applied electric current owing to Rashba spin-orbit coupling, while the out-of-plane component is absent. We propose the out-of-plane carrier spin can emerge in ferromagnetic transition-metal dichalcogenides monolayer, by symmetry arguments and first-principles calculations. An intrinsic spin-orbit coupling in the monolayer provides valley-contrasting Zeeman-type spin splitting for generating the vertical induced spin. The current direction can be exploited to tune the induced spin, accompanied with val…
TMDs have recently been spotlighted due to their original features. Firstly, they have layered structures with Van der Waals interactions. Secondly, they have different phases, affecting a degree of anisotropy. Finally, they have excellent carrier mobilities. In this review, based on these characteristics, this journal shows how TMDs can be applied in a wide variety of industries. The main applications that will be treated is biomedical and electronic applications.
With advances in exfoliation and synthetic techniques, atomically thin films of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides have recently been isolated and characterized. Their two-dimensional structure, coupled with a direct band gap in the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, suggests suitability for digital electronics and optoelectronics. Towards that end, several classes of high-performance devices have been reported along with significant progress in understanding their physical properties. Here, we present a review of the architecture, operating principles, and physics o…
In this paper, starting from a quantum master equation, we discuss the interaction between two negatively charged Nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond via exciton-polaritons propagating in a two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide layer in close proximity to a diamond crystal. We focus on the optical 1.945 eV transition and model the Nitrogen-vacancy color centers as two-level (artificial) atoms. We find that the interaction parameters and the energy levels renormalization constants are extremely sensitive to the distance of the Nitrogen-vacancy centers to the transition metal dic…
The interlayer couplings in commensurate and incommensurate bilayer structures of transition metal dichalcogenides are investigated with perturbative treatment. The interlayer coupling in \pm K valleys can be decomposed into a series of hopping terms with distinct phase factors. In H-type and R-type commensurate bilayers, the interference between the three main terms leads to a sensitive dependence of the interlayer coupling strength on the translation. The magnitudes of the main hopping terms are found to some dozen of meV by fitting to the ab initio results. The interlayer couplings in Γvall…
