We report the reconstruction method of the fast fission events in 25 MeV/u $^{86}$Kr +$^{208}$Pb reactions at the Compact Spectrometer for Heavy IoN Experiment (CSHINE). The fission fragments are measured by three large-area parallel plate avalanche counters, which can deliver the position and the arrival timing information of the fragments. The start timing information is given by the radio frequency of the cyclotron. Using the velocities of the two fission fragments, the fission events are reconstructed. The broadening of both the velocity distribution and the azimuthal difference of the fission fragments decrease with the folding angle, in accordance with the picture that fast fission occurs. The anisotropic angular distribution of the fission axis also reveals consistently the dynamic feature the fission events.
The experiment of Ar+Au reactions at 30 MeV/u have been performed using the Compact Spectrometer for Heavy IoN Experiments (CSHINE) in phase I. The light-charged particles are measured by the silicon stripe telescopes in coincidence with the fission fragments recorded by the parallel plate avalanche counters. The distribution properties of the azimuth difference $Δϕ$ and the time-of-flight difference $ΔTOF$ of the fission fragments are presented varying the folding angles which represents the linear momentum transfer from the projectile to the reaction system. The relative abundance of the lig…
The rearrangement time \Deltat of the fission reaction can be extracted from the full-width at half maximum (f.w.h.m.) of the isotopic distributions of fission fragments if this width is attributed to an uncertainty \DeltaN in the neutron-number N of the fragment; then the energy-time uncertainty relation leads to \Deltat = 0.17 yoctosecond.
The cross sections for the binary fission of 197Au, 181Ta and 209Bi targets induced by 11B ions were measured at intermediate energies. The fission products cross sections were studied by means of activation analysis in off-line regime observed gamma-ray spectra. The fission cross section is reconstructed on the basis of charge and mass distribution of the fission products.
A critical re-analysis of the experimental data to reject transfer fission component did not change the fragment mass widths and hence the conclusion regarding abrupt rise in mass widths with decreasing energy around Coulomb barrier remains unchanged
Our measurements of variances ($σ_{m}^2$) in mass distributions of fission fragments from fusion-fission reactions of light projectiles (C, O and F) on deformed thorium targets exhibit a sharp anomalous increase with energy near the Coulomb barrier, in contrast to the smooth variation of $σ_{m}^2$ for the spherical bismuth target. This departure from expectation based on a statistical description is explained in terms of microscopic effects arising from the orientational dependence in the case of deformed thorium targets.
The Coulomb effect hypothesis in cold fission, formerly used to interpret fluctuations in the curve of maximal total kinetic energy as a function of fragments mass, in reactions 233U(nth,f), 235U(nth,f) and 239Pu(nth,f), is confirmed by the preference for more asymmetrical charge splits observed in cold fragmentations. Several experimental results on reactions 233U(nth,f) and 235U(nth,f) show that, for two isobaric fragmentations with similar Q-values, the greater is the value of the kinetic energy of the fragments, the greater will be the probability of more asymmetric charge split.
The capture-fission cross-sections in an energy range of 206-242 MeV of 48Ca-projectiles and mass-energy distributions (MEDs) of reaction products in an energy range of 211-242 MeV have been measured in the 48Ca+208Pb reaction using the double-arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET. The MEDs of fragments for heated fission were shown to consist of two components. One component, which is due to classical fusion-fission, is associated with the symmetric fission of the 256No compound nucleus. The other component, which appears as ''shoulders'', is associated with the quasi-fission process and can…
The cross section curves for the formation, at the barrier, of trans-target isotopes of a heavy element by bombardment of a heavy target with various heavy ions are shown to be similar to the distribution of the neutron number N of a fission fragment around its most probable value . Moreover the isotopic cross sections for one-, two- and three- proton transfer products are found to be in agreement with the Gaussian distribution law of the atomic number Z of a fission product around its most probable value . This situation suggests that the law of transfer of nucleons could be the same in fissi…
A novel method to access the complete identification in atomic number Z and mass A of fragments produced in low-energy fission of actinides is presented. This method, based on the use of multi- nucleon transfer and fusion reactions in inverse kinematics, is applied in this work to reactions between a 238U beam and a 12C target to produce and induce fission of moderately excited actinides. The fission fragments are detected and fully identified with the VAMOS spectrometer of GANIL, allowing the measurement of fragment yields of several hundreds of isotopes in a range between A ~ 80 and ~ 160, a…
Total cross sections for proton- and deuteron-induced-fission of 208Pb and 238U have been determined in the energy range between 500 MeV and 1 GeV. The experiment has been performed in inverse kinematics at GSI Darmstadt, facilitating the counting of the projectiles and the identification of the reaction products. High precision between 5 and 7 percent has been achieved by individually counting the beam particles and by registering both fission fragments in coincidence with high efficiency and full Z resolution. Fission was clearly distinguished from other reaction channels. The results were f…
Fission fragments from 1 A GeV 238U projectiles irradiating a hydrogen target were investigated by using the fragment separator FRS for magnetic selection of reaction products including ray-tracing and DE-ToF techniques. The momentum spectra of 733 identified fragments were analysed to provide isotopic production cross sections, fission-fragment velocities and recoil momenta of the fissioning parent nuclei. Besides their general relevance, these quantities are also demanded for applications. Calculations and simulations with codes commonly used and recently developed or improved are compared t…
Fission fragment mass and angular distributions were measured from the ^{64}Ni+^{197}Au reaction at 418 MeV and 383 MeV incident energy. A detailed data analysis was performed, using the one-body dissipation theory implemented in the code HICOL. The effect of the window and the wall friction on the experimental observables was investigated. Friction stronger than one-body was also considered. The mass and angular distributions were consistent with one-body dissipation. An evaporation code DIFHEAT coupled to HICOL was developed in order to predict reaction time scales required to describe avail…
The average prompt-fission-neutron multiplicity $\barν$ is of significance in the areas of nuclear theory, nuclear nonproliferation, and nuclear energy. In this work, the surrogate-reaction method has been used for the first time to indirectly determine $\barν$ for $^{239}$Pu($n$,$f$) via $^{240}$Pu($α$,$α^{\prime}f$) reactions. A $^{240}$Pu target was bombarded with a beam of 53.9-MeV $α$ particles. Scattered $α$ particles, fission products, and neutrons were measured with the NeutronSTARS detector array. Values of $\barν$ were obtained for a continuous range of equivalent incident neutron en…
Mechanism of nuclear reactions on 197Au induced by 11B ions at energies above Coulomb barrier was studied by induced-activity method and gamma-spectroscopy. The cross sections of the reaction fragments from 197Au induced by 11B ions were measured at bombarding energies 137.5 and 255.5 MeV. The fission process was investigated by using multimodal fission approach at the energy 137.5 MeV, and pure symmetric distribution at 255.5 MeV. It was observed that the transferred linear momentum provides the information on the initial projectile-target information. The fissility for both fission reactions…
Reliable neutron-induced reaction cross sections of unstable nuclei are essential for nuclear astrophysics and applications but their direct measurement is often impossible. The surrogate-reaction method is one of the most promising alternatives to access these cross sections. In this work, we successfully applied the surrogate-reaction method to infer for the first time both the neutron-induced fission and radiative-capture cross sections of 239Pu in a consistent manner from a single measurement. This was achieved by combining simultaneously-measured fission and gamma-emission probabilities f…
Isotopic cross sections of all projectile residues with Z above 23 produced in collisions induced by 238U at 1 A GeV on deuterium have been measured. The isotopic distributions reflect the role of evaporation and fission in the formation process of these nuclei. The comparison of the measured cross sections with Monte-Carlo de-excitation codes including an analytical description of the dynamics of fission shows the sensitivity of the data to nuclear dissipation. Moreover, the large excitation-energy range covered in this experiment together with the high accuracy of the measured cross sections…
Accurate multiplicities of prompt fission neutrons emitted in neutron-induced fission on a large energy range are essential for fundamental and applied nuclear physics. Measuring them to high precision for radioactive fissioning nuclides remains, however, an experimental challenge. In this work, the average prompt-neutron multiplicity emitted in the 239Pu(n,f) reaction was extracted as a function of the incident-neutron energy, over the range 1-700~MeV, with a novel technique, which allowed to minimize and correct for the main sources of bias and thus achieve unprecedented precision. At low en…
Mostly for the purpose of applications for the energy and the environment and for the design of sources of neutrons or exotic nuclides, intense research has been dedicated to spallation, induced by protons or light projectiles at incident energies of around 1 GeV. In this energy range, while multifragmentation has still a minor share in the total reaction cross section, it was observed to have, together with fission, a prominent role in the production and the kinematics of intermediate-mass fragments, so as to condition the whole production of light and heavy nuclides. The experimental observa…
An analysis of experimental data from the inverse-kinematics ISODEC experiment on 78Kr+40Ca reaction at a bombarding energy of 10 AMeV has revealed signatures of a hitherto unknown reaction mechanism, intermediate between the classical damped binary collisions and fusion-fission, but also substantially different from what is being termed in the literature as fast fission or quasi fission. These signatures point to a scenario where the system fuses transiently while virtually equilibrating mass asymmetry and energy and, yet, keeping part of the energy stored in a collective shock-imparted and, …
Products of the fusion-evaporation reaction Ca-48 + Am-243 were studied with the TASISpec set-up at the gas-filled separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung. Amongst the detected thirty correlated alpha-decay chains associated with the production of element Z=115, two recoil-alpha-fission and five recoil-alpha-alpha-fission events were observed. The latter are similar to four such events reported from experiments performed at the Dubna gas-filled separator. Contrary to their interpretation, we propose an alternative view, namely to assign eight of these eleven decay …
We investigated the 238U(d,p) reaction as a surrogate for the n + 238U reaction. For this purpose we measured for the first time the gamma-decay and fission probabilities of 239U* simultaneously and compared them to the corresponding neutron-induced data. We present the details of the procedure to infer the decay probabilities, as well as a thorough uncertainty analysis, including parameter correlations. Calculations based on the continuum-discretized coupled-channels and distorted-wave Born approximations were used to correct our data from detected protons originating from elastic and inelast…
The Coulomb effect hypothesis, formerly used to interpret fluctuations in the curve of maximal total kinetic energy as a function of light fragment mass in reactions 233U(nth,f), 235U(nth,f) and 239Pu(nth,f), is confirmed in high kinetic energy as well as in low excitation energy windows, respectively. Data from reactions 233U(nth,f), 235U(nth,f), 239Pu(nth,f) and 252Cf(sf) show that, between two isobaric fragmentations with similar Q-values, the more asymmetric charge split reaches the higher value of total kinetic energy. Moreover, in isobaric charge splits with different Q-values, similar p…
Fission fragment mass distribution has been measured from the decay of $^{246}$Bk nucleus populating via two entrance channels with slight difference in mass asymmetries but belonging on either side of the Businaro Gallone mass asymmetry parameter. Both the target nuclei were deformed. Near the Coulomb barrier, at similar excitation energies the width of the fission fragment mass distribution was found to be drastically different for the $^{14}$N + $^{232}$Th reaction compared to the $^{11}$B + $^{235}$U reaction. The entrance channel mass asymmetry was found to affect the fusion process sharp…
Fissile nuclei with small shape distortion relative to the ground-state deformation and with low angular momentum were produced in peripheral heavy-ion collisions. Under the conditions of small shape distortions and low angular momentum, the theoretical description of the fission process can be considerably simplified, and the relevant information on dissipation can be better extracted than in conventional experiments based on fusion-fission reactions. In addition, this experimental approach induces very high excitation energies, a condition necessary to observe transient effects. The experime…
The mechanism of fusion hindrance, an effect observed in the reactions of cold, warm and hot fusion leading to production of the superheavy elements, is investigated. A systematics of transfermium production cross sections is used to determine fusion probabilities. Mechanism of fusion hindrance is described as a competition of fusion and quasi-fission. Available evaporation residue cross sections in the superheavy region are reproduced satisfactorily. Analysis of the measured capture cross sections is performed and a sudden disappearance of the capture cross sections is observed at low fusion …
We have studied the fission-neutron emission competition in highly excited $^{274}$Hs (Z=108) (where the fission barrier is due to shell effects) formed by a hot fusion reaction. Matching cross bombardments ($^{26}$Mg + $^{248}$Cm and $^{25}$Mg + $^{248}$Cm) were used to identify the properties of first chance fission of $^{274}$Hs. A Harding-Farley analysis of the fission neutrons emitted in the $^{25,26}$Mg + $^{248}$Cm was performed to identify the pre- and post-scission components of the neutron multiplicities in each system. ($Γ$$_{n}$/$Γ$$_{t}$) for the first chance fission of $^{274}$Hs…
Inelastic and multi-nucleon transfer reactions between a $^{238}$U beam, accelerated at 6.14 MeV/u, and a $^{12}$C target were used for the production of neutron-rich, fissioning systems from U to Cm. A Si telescope, devoted to the detection of the target-like nuclei, provided a characterization of the fissioning systems in atomic and mass numbers, as well as in excitation energy. Cross-sections, angular and excitation-energy distributions were measured for the inelastic and transfer channels. Possible excitations of the target-like nuclei were experimentally investigated for the first time, b…
Fusion-fission and fully energy-damped binary processes of the $^{35}$Cl+$^{24}$Mg reaction were investigated using particle-particle coincidence techniques at a $^{35}$Cl bombarding energy of E$_{lab}$ $\approx$ 8 MeV/nucleon. Inclusive data were also taken in order to determine the partial wave distribution of the fusion process. The fragment-fragment correlation data show that the majority of events arises from a binary-decay process with a relatively large multiplicity of secondary light-charged particles emitted by the two primary excited fragments in the exit channel. No evidence is obse…
Cross-sections for fragments produced by the fission reaction induced by accelerated 7Li ions impinged into an natPb target at 245 MeV were obtained. We have applied the induced-activation method in off-line analysis. The analysis of charge and mass distributions of fission products allowed the determination of the total fission cross-section for the 7Li+Pb system. The recoil technique (thick target- thick catcher), based on the two step model mathematical formalism, is used to determine the kinematics characteristics of reaction products. Analysis concerning transferred linear momentum provid…
Prompt fission neutron spectra from $^{239}$Pu($n,f$) were measured for incident neutron energies from $0.7$ to $700\,$MeV at the Weapons Neutron Research facility (WNR) of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. A newly designed high-efficiency fission chamber was coupled to the highly segmented Chi-Nu array to detect neutrons emitted in fission events. The double time-of-flight technique was used to deduce the incident-neutron energies from the spallation target and the outgoing-neutron energies from the fission chamber. Prompt fission neutron spectra (PFNS) were measured with respect to $^{2…
Microscopic effects in fragment mass distributions in fusion-fission reactions of light projectiles (C, O and F) on deformed thorium and spherical bismuth targets in near and below Coulomb barrier energies are investigated. Precisely measured mass distribution shows a sudden anomalous increase in variances of mass distributions ($σ_{m}^2$) near Coulomb barrier energies for all three projectiles with deformed thorium target, in contrast to a smooth variation of $σ_{m}^2$ with energy for spherical bismuth target. Macroscopic effects of change in mass flow or prolonged mass equilibration time can…
The thesis presents investigations on the angular and mass distribution of fission fragments on heavy ion induced fission reactions. The present investigations address current issues in heavy ion induced fission reactions like finding the optimum entrance channel for the synthesis of super heavy elements (SHE). A double arm time of flight spectrometer over long flight path was used to measure the precise masses of complementary fission fragments. Necessary large area position sensitive gas detectors, the method of experiments and data analysis were developed. The first string of measurements w…
Despite the recent experimental and theoretical progress in the investigation of the nuclear fission process, a complete description still represents a challenge in nuclear physics because it is a very complex dynamical process, whose description involves the coupling between intrinsic and collective degrees of freedom, as well as different quantum-mechanical phenomena. To improve on the existing data on nuclear fission, we produce fission reactions of heavy nuclei in inverse kinematics by using quasi-free (p,2p) scattering, which induce fission through particle-hole excitations that can range…
Prompt fission $γ$-rays are responsible for approximately 5\% of the total energy released in fission, and therefore important to understand when modelling nuclear reactors. In this work we present prompt $γ$-ray emission characteristics in fission, for the first time as a function of the nuclear excitation energy of the fissioning system. Emitted $γ$-ray spectra were measured, and $γ$-ray multiplicities and average and total $γ$ energies per fission were determined for the $^{233}$U(d,pf) reaction for excitation energies between 4.8 and 10 MeV, and for the $^{239}$Pu(d,pf) reaction between 4.…
Background: The cross section for forming a heavy evaporation residue in fusion reactions depends on the capture cross section, the fusion probability, PCN, i.e., the probability that the projectile-target system will evolve inside the fission saddle point to form a completely fused system rather than re-separating (quasifission), and the survival of the completely fused system against fission. PCN is the least known of these quantities. Purpose: To measure PCN for the reaction of 101.2 MeV 18O, 147.3 MeV 26Mg, 170.9 MeV 30Si and 195.3 MeV 36S with 197Au. Methods: We measured the fission fragm…
The fission fragment mass distributions have been measured in the reactions 16O + 184W and 19F+ 181Ta populating the same compound nucleus 200Pb? at similar excitation energies. It is found that the widths of the mass distribution increases monotonically with excitation energy, indicating the absence of quasi-fission for both reactions. This is contrary to two recent claims of the presence of quasi-fission in the above mentioned reactions.

The angular distributions of fission fragments for the $^{32}$S+$^{184}$W reaction at center-of-mass energies of 118.8, 123.1, 127.3, 131.5, 135.8, 141.1 and 144.4 MeV were measured. The experimental fission excitation function is obtained. The fragment angular anisotropy ($\mathcal{A}_{\rm exp}$) is found by extrapolating the each fission angular distributions. The measured fission cross sections of the $^{32}$S+$^{182,184}$W reaction are decomposed into fusion-fission, quasifission and fast fission contributions by the dinuclear system model. The total evaporation residue excitation function…
The role of spherical quantum shells in the competition between fusion and quasi-fission is studied for reactions forming heavy elements. Measurements of fission fragment mass distributions for different reactions leading to similar compound nuclei have been made near the fusion barrier. In general, more quasi-fission is observed for reactions with non-magic nuclei. However, the $^{40}$Ca+$^{208}$Pb reaction is an exception, showing strong evidence for quasi-fission, though both nuclei are doubly magic. Time-dependent Hartree-Fock calculations predict fast equilibration of $N/Z$ in the two fra…
We propose to produce neutron-rich nuclei in the range of the astrophysical r-process around the waiting point N=126 by fissioning a dense laser-accelerated thorium ion bunch in a thorium target (covered by a CH2 layer), where the light fission fragments of the beam fuse with the light fission fragments of the target. Via the 'hole-boring' mode of laser Radiation Pressure Acceleration using a high-intensity, short pulse laser, very efficiently bunches of 232Th with solid-state density can be generated from a Th layer, placed beneath a deuterated polyethylene foil, both forming the production t…
Mass distributions of fission fragments arising from the slow quasi-fission process have been derived by comparing the measured distributions with the theoretical distributions based on compound nuclear fission model for several reactions. The mass-distributions corresponding to quasi-fission events for all the systems show the following common features: (1) they are double peaked with fixed peak-centroids and nearly same width at different incident energies, (2) the yield of quasi-fission events decreases with the increasing projectile energy, and (3) peak corresponding to lighter fragment is…
A two-step reaction scheme for the production of extremely neutron-rich radioactive beams, fission followed by cold fragmentation, is considered. The cross sections of the second step, the cold fragmentation of neutron-rich fission fragments, are estimated with different computer codes. Discrepancies between an empirical systematics and nuclear-reaction codes are found.
Inverse kinematics coupled to a high-resolution spectrometer is used to investigate the isotopic yields of fission fragments produced in reactions between a 238U beam at 24 MeV/u and 9Be and 12C targets. Mass, atomic number and isotopic distributions are reported for the two reactions. These informations give access to the neutron excess and the isotopic distribution widths, which together with the atomic-number and mass distributions are used to investigate the fusion-fission dynamics.
A correlation between the production and kinematic properties of the fragments issued of fission and multifragmentation is established in the study of the reaction 136Xe+hydrogen at 1 GeV per nucleon, measured in inverse kinematics at the FRagment Separator (GSI, Darmstadt). Such observables are analysed in a comprehensive study, selected as a function of the decay mode, and related to the isotopic properties of the fragments in the intermediate-mass region. Valuable information can be deduced on the characteristics of the heaviest product in the reaction, which has been considered a fundament…
Fission and gamma-emission probabilities induced by transfer or inelastic scattering reactions with light projectile nuclei are very valuable quantities for constraining the models that describe the de-excitation of heavy nuclei. We have developed an experimental set-up that allows us to simultaneously measure fission and gamma-emission probabilities. The measurement of the gamma-emission probability at excitation energies where the fission channel is open is challenging due to the intense background of gamma rays emitted by the fission fragments. We discuss the procedure to subtract such a ba…
We analyze reactions of several types that are naively below threshold but can proceed because of the release of binding energy from nuclear fission and occasionally the formation of Coulombic bound states. These reactions include (i) photofission with pion production and (ii) charged current neutrino-nucleus reactions that lead to fission and/or formation of a Coulomb bound state of a $μ^-$ with the nucleus of a fission fragment. We comment on the possible experimental observation of these reactions.
A new experimental approach is introduced to investigate the relaxation of the nuclear deformation degrees of freedom. Highly excited fissioning systems with compact shapes and low angular momenta are produced in peripheral relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Both fission fragments are identified in atomic number. Fission cross sections and fission-fragment element distributions are determined as a function of the fissioning element. From the comparison of these new observables with a nuclear-reaction code a value for the transient time is deduced.
The atomic numbers and the masses of fragments formed in quasi-fission reactions have been simultaneously measured at scission in 48 Ti + 238 U reactions at a laboratory energy of 286 MeV. The atomic numbers were determined from measured characteristic fluorescence X-rays whereas the masses were obtained from the emission angles and times of flight of the two emerging fragments. For the first time, thanks to this full identification of the quasi-fission fragments on a broad angular range, the important role of the proton shell closure at Z = 82 is evidenced by the associated maximum production…
Above-barrier cross sections of $α$-active heavy reaction products, as well as fission, were measured for the reactions of $^{10,11}$B with $^{209}$Bi. Detailed analysis showed that the heavy products include components from incomplete fusion as well as complete fusion (CF), but fission originates almost exclusively from CF. Compared with fusion calculations without breakup, the CF cross sections are suppressed by 15% for $^{10}$B and 7% for $^{11}$B. A consistent and systematic variation of the suppression of CF for reactions of the weakly bound nuclei $^{6,7}$Li, $^{9}$Be, $^{10,11}$B on tar…
Background: Quasifission and fusion-fission are primary mechanisms to prevent the production of superheavy elements. The recent experimental measurements reveal that the fusion-evaporation cross section in the $3n$ reaction channel of $^{48}$Ca+$^{239}$Pu is 50 times lower than using $^{244}$Pu as target nucleus. However, the precise mechanisms of this remarkable isotopic dependence are not well understood. Purpose: To understand the experimental observation of the rapid decrease of stability of superheavy nuclei as the neutron number decreases, the theoretical studies of quasifission and fusi…
