Motivated by an optimal visiting problem, we study a switching mean-field game on a network, where both a decisional and a switching time-variable is at disposal of the agents for what concerns, respectively, the instant to decide and the instant to perform the switch. Every switch between the nodes of the network represents a switch from $0$ to $1$ of one component of the string $p = (p_1,\ldots, p_n)$ which, in the optimal visiting interpretation, gives information on the visited targets, being the targets labeled by $i=1,\ldots, n$. The goal is to reach the final string $(1, \ldots, 1)$ in the final time $T$, minimizing a switching cost also depending on the congestion on the nodes. We prove the existence of a suitable definition of an approximated $\varepsilon$-mean-field equilibrium and then address the passage to the limit when $\varepsilon$ goes to 0.
The optimal visiting problem is the optimization of a trajectory that has to touch or pass as close as possible to a collection of target points. The problem does not verify the dynamic programming principle, and it needs a specific formulation to keep track of the visited target points. In this paper, we introduce a hybrid approach by adding a discontinuous part of the trajectory switching between a group of discrete states related to the targets. Then, we show the well-posedness of the related Hamilton-Jacobi problem, by reformulating the optimal visiting as a collection of time-dependent op…
Among the most important variants of the traveling salesman problem (TSP) are those relaxing the constraint that every locus should necessarily get visited, rather taking into account a revenue (prize) for visiting customers. In the Profitable Tour Problem (PTP), we seek for a tour visiting a subset of customers while maximizing net gain (profit) as difference between total revenue collected from visited customers and incurred traveling costs. The metric TSP can be modeled as a PTP with large revenues. As such, PTP is well-known to be NP-hard and also APX-hardness follows. Nevertheless, PTP is…
Motivated by recent applications in control theory, we study the feedback stabilizability of switched systems, where one is allowed to chose the switching signal as a function of $x(t)$ in order to stabilize the system. We propose new algorithms and analyze several mathematical features of the problem which were unnoticed up to now, to our knowledge. We prove complexity results, (in-)equivalence between various notions of stabilizability, existence of Lyapunov functions, and provide a case study for a paradigmatic example introduced by Stanford and Urbano.
Motivated by networked systems, stochastic control, optimization, and a wide variety of applications, this work is devoted to systems of switching jump diffusions. Treating such nonlinear systems, we focus on stability issues. First asymptotic stability in the large is obtained. Then the study on exponential p-stability is carried out. Connection between almost surely exponential stability and exponential p-stability is exploited. Also presented are smooth-dependence on the initial data. Using the smooth-dependence, necessary conditions for exponential p-stability are derived. Then criteria fo…
Motivated from Bertsekas' recent study on policy iteration (PI) for solving the problems of infinite-horizon discounted Markov decision processes (MDPs) in an on-line setting, we develop an off-line PI integrated with a multi-policy improvement method of policy switching and then adapt its asynchronous variant into on-line PI algorithm that generates a sequence of policies over time. The current policy is updated into the next policy by switching the action only at the current state while ensuring the monotonicity of the value functions of the policies in the sequence. Depending on MDP's state…

Motivated by applications arising in networked systems, this work examines controlled regime-switching systems that stem from a mean-variance formulation. A main point is that the switching process is a hidden Markov chain. An additional piece of information, namely, a noisy observation of switching process corrupted by white noise is available. We focus on minimizing the variance subject to a fixed terminal expectation. Using the Wonham filter, we convert the partially observed system to a completely observable one first. Since closed-form solutions are virtually impossible be obtained, a Mar…
Motivated in part by a problem in simulated tempering (a form of Markov chain Monte Carlo) we seek to minimise, in a suitable sense, the time it takes a (regular) diffusion with instantaneous reflection at 0 and 1 to travel from the origin to $1$ and then return (the so-called commute time from 0 to 1). We consider the static and dynamic versions of this problem where the control mechanism is related to the diffusion\rq{}s drift via the corresponding scale function. In the static version the diffusion's drift can be chosen at each point in [0,1], whereas in the dynamic version, we are only abl…
We study a new kind of non-zero-sum stochastic differential game with mixed impulse/switching controls, motivated by strategic competition in commodity markets. A representative upstream firm produces a commodity that is used by a representative downstream firm to produce a final consumption good. Both firms can influence the price of the commodity. By shutting down or increasing generation capacities, the upstream firm influences the price with impulses. By switching (or not) to a substitute, the downstream firm influences the drift of the commodity price process. We study the resulting impul…
We consider an investor who wants to select her/his optimal consumption, investment and insurance policies. Motivated by new insurance products, we allow not only the financial marke but also the insurable loss to depend on the regime of the economy. The objective of the investor is to maximize her/his expected total discounted utility of consumption over an infinite time horizon. For the case of hyperbolic absolute risk aversion (HARA) utility functions, we obtain the first explicit solutions for simultaneous optimal consumption, investment, and insurance problems when there is regime switchi…
This paper studies the cooperative global robust stabilization problem for a class of nonlinear multi-agent systems. The problem is motivated from the study of the cooperative global robust output regulation problem for the class of nonlinear multi-agent systems in normal form with unity relative degree which was studied recently under the conditions that the switching network is undirected and some nonlinear functions satisfy certain growth condition. We first solve the stabilization problem by using the multiple Lyapunov functions approach and the average dwell time method. Then, we apply th…
This paper studies a finite-fuel two-dimensional degenerate singular stochastic control problem under regime switching that is motivated by the optimal irreversible extraction problem of an exhaustible commodity. A company extracts a natural resource from a reserve with finite capacity, and sells it in the market at a spot price that evolves according to a Brownian motion with volatility modulated by a two-state Markov chain. In this setting, the company aims at finding the extraction rule that maximizes its expected discounted cash flow, net of the costs of extraction and maintenance of the r…
We solve an infinite time-horizon bounded-variation stochastic control problem with regime switching between $N$ states. This is motivated by the problem of a government that wants to control the country's debt-to-GDP (gross domestic product) ratio. In our formulation, the debt-to-GDP ratio evolves stochastically in continuous time, and its drift -- given by the interest rate on government debt, net of the growth rate of GDP -- is affected by an exogenous macroeconomic risk process modelled by a continuous-time Markov chain with $N$ states. The government can act on the public debt by increasi…

Motivated by an open problem posed by J.P. Hespanha, we extend the notion of Barabanov norm and extremal trajectory to classes of switching signals that are not closed under concatenation. We use these tools to prove that the finiteness of the L2-gain is equivalent, for a large set of switched linear control systems, to the condition that the generalized spectral radius associated with any minimal realization of the original switched system is smaller than one.
We extend the convergence analysis for methods solving PDE-constrained optimal control problems containing both discrete and continuous control decisions based on relaxation and rounding strategies to the class of first order semilinear hyperbolic systems in one space dimension. The results are obtained by novel a-priori estimates for the size of the relaxation gap based on the characteristic flow, fixed-point arguments and particular regularity theory for such mixed-integer control problems. As an application we consider a relaxation model for optimal flux switching control in conservation la…
Motivated by the goal of learning controllers for complex systems whose dynamics change over time, we consider the problem of designing control laws for systems that switch among a finite set of unknown discrete-time linear subsystems under unknown switching signals. To this end, we propose a method that uses data to directly design a control mechanism without any explicit identification step. Our approach is online, meaning that the data are collected over time while the system is evolving in closed-loop, and are directly used to iteratively update the controller. A major benefit of the propo…
Motivated by questions in robust control and switched linear dynamical systems, we consider the problem checking whether all convex combinations of k matrices in R^{n x n} are stable. In particular, we are interested whether there exist algorithms which can solve this problem in time polynomial in n and k. We show that if $k= \lceil n^d \rceil$ for any fixed real d>0, then the problem is NP-hard, meaning that no polynomial-time algorithm in n exists provided that P is not NP, a widely believed conjecture in computer science. On the other hand, when k is a constant independent of n, then it is …
