We propose a novel variant of the Localized Orthogonal Decomposition (LOD) method for time-harmonic scattering problems of Helmholtz type with high wavenumber $κ$. On a coarse mesh of width $H$, the proposed method identifies local finite element source terms that yield rapidly decaying responses under the solution operator. They can be constructed to high accuracy from independent local snapshot solutions on patches of width $\ell H$ and are used as problem-adapted basis functions in the method. In contrast to the classical LOD and other state-of-the-art multi-scale methods, the localization error decays super-exponentially as the oversampling parameter $\ell$ is increased. This implies that optimal convergence is observed under the substantially relaxed oversampling condition $\ell \gtrsim (\log \tfracκ{H})^{(d-1)/d}$ with $d$ denoting the spatial dimension. Numerical experiments demonstrate the significantly improved offline and online performance of the method also in the case of heterogeneous media and perfectly matched layers.
We introduce a novel multi-resolution Localized Orthogonal Decomposition (LOD) for time-harmonic acoustic scattering problems that can be modeled by the Helmholtz equation. The method merges the concepts of LOD and operator-adapted wavelets (gamblets) and proves its applicability for a class of complex-valued, non-hermitian and indefinite problems. It computes hierarchical bases that block-diagonalize the Helmholtz operator and thereby decouples the discretization scales. Sparsity is preserved by a novel localization strategy that improves stability properties even in the elliptic case. We pre…
In this paper we discuss the convergence of state-of-the-art optimized Schwarz transmission conditions for Helmholtz problems defined on closed domains (i.e. setups which do not exhibit an outgoing wave condition), as commonly encountered when modeling cavities. In particular, the impact of back-propagating waves on the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is analyzed. Afterwards, the performance of the well-established optimized 0th-order, evanescent modes damping, optimized 2nd-order and Padé-localized square-root transmission conditions is discussed.
In this article, discrete variants of several results from vector calculus are studied for classical finite difference summation by parts operators in two and three space dimensions. It is shown that existence theorems for scalar/vector potentials of irrotational/solenoidal vector fields cannot hold discretely because of grid oscillations, which are characterised explicitly. This results in a non-vanishing remainder associated to grid oscillations in the discrete Helmholtz Hodge decomposition. Nevertheless, iterative numerical methods based on an interpretation of the Helmholtz Hodge decomposi…
In this paper, based on a domain decomposition (DD) method, we shall propose an efficient two-level preconditioned Helmholtz-Jacobi-Davidson (PHJD) method for solving the algebraic eigenvalue problem resulting from the edge element approximation of the Maxwell eigenvalue problem. In order to eliminate the components in orthogonal complement space of the eigenvalue, we shall solve a parallel preconditioned system and a Helmholtz projection system together in fine space. After one coarse space correction in each iteration and minimizing the Rayleigh quotient in a small dimensional Davidson space…

This paper presents a method for the numerical treatment of reaction-convection-diffusion problems with parameter-dependent coefficients that are arbitrary rough and possibly varying at a very fine scale. The presented technique combines the reduced basis (RB) framework with the recently proposed super-localized orthogonal decomposition (SLOD). More specifically, the RB is used for accelerating the typically costly SLOD basis computation, while the SLOD is employed for an efficient compression of the problem's solution operator requiring coarse solves only. The combined advantages of both meth…
This paper presents a multi-scale method for convection-dominated diffusion problems in the regime of large Péclet numbers. The application of the solution operator to piecewise constant right-hand sides on some arbitrary coarse mesh defines a finite-dimensional coarse ansatz space with favorable approximation properties. For some relevant error measures, including the $L^2$-norm, the Galerkin projection onto this generalized finite element space even yields $\varepsilon$-independent error bounds, $\varepsilon$ being the singular perturbation parameter. By constructing an approximate local bas…
This study proposes a novel coupled-mode theory for two-dimensional exterior Helmholtz problems. The proposed approach is based on the separation of the entire space R2 into a fictitious disk and its exterior. The disk is allocated in such a way that it comprises all the inhomogeneity; therefore, the exterior supports cylindrical waves with a continuous spectrum. For the interior, we expand an unknown wave field using normal modes that satisfy some auxiliary boundary conditions on the surface of the disk. For the interior expansion, we propose combining the Neumann and Dirichlet normal modes. …
The simulation of high-dimensional problems with manageable computational resource represents a long-standing challenge. In a series of our recent work [25, 17, 18, 24], a class of sparse grid DG methods has been formulated for solving various types of partial differential equations in high dimensions. By making use of the multiwavelet tensor-product bases on sparse grids in conjunction with the standard DG weak formulation, such a novel method is able to significantly reduce the computation and storage cost compared with full grid DG counterpart, while not compromising accuracy much for suffi…
We investigate the asymptotic relation between the inverse problems relying on the Helmholtz equation and the radiative transfer equation (RTE) as physical models, in the high-frequency limit. In particular, we evaluate the asymptotic convergence of a generalized version of inverse scattering problem based on the Helmholtz equation, to the inverse scattering problem of the Liouville equation (a simplified version of RTE). The two inverse problems are connected through the Wigner transform that translates the wave-type description on the physical space to the kinetic-type description on the pha…
We propose a multiscale approach for a nonlinear Helmholtz problem with possible oscillations in the Kerr coefficient, the refractive index, and the diffusion coefficient. The method does not rely on structural assumptions on the coefficients and combines the multiscale technique known as Localized Orthogonal Decomposition with an adaptive iterative approximation of the nonlinearity. We rigorously analyze the method in terms of well-posedness and convergence properties based on suitable assumptions on the initial data and the discretization parameters. Numerical examples illustrate the theoret…
