We advance the state of the art in Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulations for Guillotine 2D Cutting Problems by (i) adapting a previously known reduction to our preprocessing phase and by (ii) enhancing a previous formulation by cutting down its size and symmetries. Our focus is the Guillotine 2D Knapsack Problem with orthogonal and unrestricted cuts, constrained demand, unlimited stages, and no rotation -- however, the formulation may be adapted to many related problems. The code is available. Concerning the set of 59 instances used to benchmark the original formulation, and summing the statistics for all models generated, the enhanced formulation has only a small fraction of the variables and constraints of the original model (respectively, 3.07% and 8.35%). The enhanced formulation also takes about 4 hours to solve all instances while the original formulation takes 12 hours to solve 53 of them (the other six runs hit a three-hour time limit each). We integrate, to both formulations, a pricing framework proposed for the original formulation; the enhanced formulation keeps a significant advantage in this situation. Finally, in a recently proposed set of 80 harder instances, the enhanced formulation (with and without the pricing framework) found: 22 optimal solutions for the unrestricted problem (5 already known, 17 new); 22 optimal solutions for the restricted problem (all are new and they are not the same 22 of the optimal unrestricted solutions); better lower bounds for 25 instances; better upper bounds for 58 instances.
We investigate how to partition a rectangular region of length $L_1$ and height $L_2$ into $n$ rectangles of given areas $(a_1, \dots, a_n)$ using two-stage guillotine cuts, so as to minimize either (i) the sum of the perimeters, (ii) the largest perimeter, or (iii) the maximum aspect ratio of the rectangles. These problems play an important role in the ongoing Vietnamese land-allocation reform, as well as in the optimization of matrix multiplication algorithms. We show that the first problem can be solved to optimality in $\mathcal{O}(n \log n)$, while the two others are NP-hard. We propose m…

The cutting stock problem with binary patterns (0-1 CSP) is a variant of CSP that usually appears as a relaxation of 2D and 3D packing problems. We present an exact method, based on an arc-flow formulation with side constraints, for solving 0-1 CSP by simply representing all the patterns in a very compact graph. Gilmore-Gomory's column generation approach is usually used to compute strong lower bounds for 0-1 CSP. We report a computational comparison between the arc-flow approach and the Gilmore-Gomory's approach.
Balas and Mazzola linearization (BML) is widely used in devising cutting plane algorithms for quadratic 0-1 programs. In this article, we improve BML by first strengthening the primal formulation of BML and then considering the dual formulation. Additionally, a new cutting plane algorithm is proposed.
We present an exact method, based on an arc-flow formulation with side constraints, for solving bin packing and cutting stock problems --- including multi-constraint variants --- by simply representing all the patterns in a very compact graph. Our method includes a graph compression algorithm that usually reduces the size of the underlying graph substantially without weakening the model. As opposed to our method, which provides strong models, conventional models are usually highly symmetric and provide very weak lower bounds. Our formulation is equivalent to Gilmore and Gomory's, thus providin…
We study relaxations for linear programs with complementarity constraints, especially instances whose complementary pairs of variables are not independent. Our formulation is based on identifying vertex covers of the conflict graph of the instance and generalizes the extended reformulation-linearization technique of Nguyen, Richard, and Tawarmalani to instances with general complementarity conditions between variables. We demonstrate how to obtain strong cutting planes for our formulation from both the stable set polytope and the boolean quadric polytope associated with a complete bipartite gr…
We survey the main formulations and solution methods for two-dimensional orthogonal cutting and packing problems, where both items and bins are rectangles. We focus on exact methods and relaxations for the four main problems from the literature: finding a packing with minimum height, packing the items into the minimum number of bins, finding a packing of maximum value, and determining the existence of a feasible packing.
We consider the selective graph coloring problem, which is a generalization of the classical graph coloring problem. Given a graph together with a partition of its vertex set into clusters, we want to choose exactly one vertex per cluster so that the number of colors needed to color the selected set of vertices is minimized. This problem is known to be NP-hard. In this study, we focus on an exact cutting plane algorithm for selective graph coloring in perfect graphs. Since there exists no suite of perfect graph instances to the best of our knowledge, we also propose an algorithm to randomly (b…
In this paper, we present an analysis of the strength of sparse cutting-planes for mixed integer linear programs (MILP) with sparse formulations. We examine three kinds of problems: packing problems, covering problems, and more general MILPs with the only assumption that the objective function is non-negative. Given a MILP instance of one of these three types, assume that we decide on the support of cutting-planes to be used and the strongest inequalities on these supports are added to the linear programming relaxation. Call the optimal objective function value of the linear programming relaxa…

The Team Orienteering Problem (TOP) is an attractive variant of the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP). The aim is to select customers and at the same time organize the visits for a vehicle fleet so as to maximize the collected profits and subject to a travel time restriction on each vehicle. In this paper, we investigate the effective use of a linear formulation with polynomial number of variables to solve TOP. Cutting planes are the core components of our solving algorithm. It is first used to solve smaller and intermediate models of the original problem by considering fewer vehicles. Useful info…
We consider the well-known one dimensional cutting stock problem (1CSP). Based on the pattern structure of the classical ILP formulation of Gilmore and Gomory, we can decompose the infinite set of 1CSP instances, with a fixed demand n, into a finite number of equivalence classes. We show up a strong relation to weighted simple games. Studying the integer round-up property we computationally show that all 1CSP instances with $n\le 9$ are proper IRUP, while we give examples of a proper non-IRUP instances with $n=10$. A gap larger than 1 occurs for $n=11$. The worst known gap is raised from 1.003…
In this paper, a framework that addresses the core of the papermaking process is proposed, starting from the production of jumbos and ending with the paper sheets used in daily life. The first phase of the process is modelled according to a lot-sizing problem, where the quantities of jumbos are determined in order to meet the demand of the entire chain. The second phase follows a one-dimensional cutting-stock formulation, where these jumbos are cut into smaller reels of predetermined lengths. Some of these are intended to fulfil a portfolio of orders, while others are used as raw material for …
Renal patients which have a willing but incompatible donor can decide to participate in a kidney exchange program (KEP). The goal of a KEP is to identify sets of such incompatible pairs that can exchange donors, leading to compatible transplants for each recipient. There is significant uncertainty involved in this process, as planned transplants may be canceled for a plethora of reasons. It is therefore crucial to take into account failures while planning exchanges. In this paper, we consider a robust variant of this problem with recourse studied in the literature that takes into account verte…
Financial portfolios are often optimized for maximum profit while subject to a constraint formulated in terms of the Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR). This amounts to solving a linear problem. However, in its original formulation this linear problem has a very large number of linear constraints, too many to be enforced in practice. In the literature this is addressed by a reformulation of the problem using so-called dummy variables. This reduces the large number of constraints in the original linear problem at the cost of increasing the number of variables. In the context of reinsurance portfo…
We present and analyze a central cutting surface algorithm for general semi-infinite convex optimization problems, and use it to develop a novel algorithm for distributionally robust optimization problems in which the uncertainty set consists of probability distributions with given bounds on their moments. Moments of arbitrary order, as well as non-polynomial moments can be included in the formulation. We show that this gives rise to a hierarchy of optimization problems with decreasing levels of risk-aversion, with classic robust optimization at one end of the spectrum, and stochastic programm…
We propose a formulation of the stochastic cutting stock problem as a discounted infinite-horizon Markov decision process. At each decision epoch, given current inventory of items, an agent chooses in which patterns to cut objects in stock in anticipation of the unknown demand. An optimal solution corresponds to a policy that associates each state with a decision and minimizes the expected total cost. Since exact algorithms scale exponentially with the state-space dimension, we develop a heuristic solution approach based on reinforcement learning. We propose an approximate policy iteration alg…
A natural and important generalization of submodularity -- $k$-submodularity -- applies to set functions with $k$ arguments and appears in a broad range of applications, such as infrastructure design, machine learning, and healthcare. In this paper, we study maximization problems with $k$-submodular objective functions. We propose valid linear inequalities, namely the $k$-submodular inequalities, for the hypograph of any $k$-submodular function. This class of inequalities serves as a novel generalization of the well-known submodular inequalities. We show that maximizing a $k$-submodular functi…
In this letter, we present an alternative mixed-integer non-liner programming formulation of the reactive optimal power flow (ROPF) problem. We utilize a mixed-integer second-order cone programming (MISOCP) based approach to find global optimal solutions of the proposed ROPF problem formulation. We strengthen the MISOCP relaxation via the addition of convex envelopes and cutting planes. Computational experiments on challenging test cases show that the MISOCP-based approach yields promising results compared to a semidefinite programming based approach from the literature.
Influence propagation has been the subject of extensive study due to its important role in social networks, epidemiology, and many other areas. Understanding propagation mechanisms is critical to control the spread of fake news or epidemics. In this work, we study the problem of detecting the smallest group of users whose conversion achieves, through propagation, a certain influence level over the network, therefore giving valuable information on the propagation behavior in this network. We develop mixed integer programming algorithms to solve this problem. The core of our algorithm is based o…
For clustering of an undirected graph, this paper presents an exact algorithm for the maximization of modularity density, a more complicated criterion to overcome drawbacks of the well-known modularity. The problem can be interpreted as the set-partitioning problem, which reminds us of its integer linear programming (ILP) formulation. We provide a branch-and-price framework for solving this ILP, or column generation combined with branch-and-bound. Above all, we formulate the column generation subproblem to be solved repeatedly as a simpler mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem. Accel…
The benefits of transmission line switching are well-known in terms of reducing operational cost and improving system reliability of power systems. However, finding the optimal power network configuration is a challenging task due to the combinatorial nature of the underlying optimization problem. In this work, we identify a certain "node-based" set that appears as substructure of the optimal transmission switching problem and then conduct a polyhedral study of this set. We construct an extended formulation of the integer hull of this set and present the inequality description of the integer h…
Order picking is the process of retrieving ordered products from storage locations in warehouses. In picker-to-parts order picking systems, two or more customer orders may be grouped and assigned to a single picker. Then routing decision regarding the visiting sequence of items during a picking tour must be made. (J.Won and S.Olafsson 2005) found that solving the integrated problem of batching and routing enables warehouse managers to organize order picking operations more efficiently compared with solving the two problems separately and sequentially. We therefore investigate the mathematical …
Integer programming (IP) is a general optimization framework widely applicable to a variety of unstructured and structured problems arising in, e.g., scheduling, production planning, and graph optimization. As IP models many provably hard to solve problems, modern IP solvers rely on many heuristics. These heuristics are usually human-designed, and naturally prone to suboptimality. The goal of this work is to show that the performance of those solvers can be greatly enhanced using reinforcement learning (RL). In particular, we investigate a specific methodology for solving IPs, known as the Cut…
In this paper, we consider the canonical water network design problem, which contains nonconvex potential loss functions and discrete resistance choices with varying costs. Traditionally, to resolve the nonconvexities of this problem, relaxations of the potential loss constraints have been applied to yield a more tractable mixed-integer convex program (MICP). However, design solutions to these relaxed problems may not be feasible with respect to the full nonconvex physics. In this paper, it is shown that, in fact, the original mixed-integer nonconvex program can be reformulated exactly as an M…
This work deals with shape optimization for contact mechanics. More specifically, the linear elasticity model is considered under the small deformations hypothesis, and the elastic body is assumed to be in contact (sliding or with Tresca friction) with a rigid foundation. The mathematical formulations studied are two regularized versions of the original variational inequality: the penalty formulation and the augmented Lagrangian formulation. In order to get the shape derivatives associated to those two non-differentiable formulations, we follow an approach based on directional derivatives \cit…
This paper seeks to solve the long-term transmission expansion planning problem more effectively by reducing the solution search space and the computational effort. The proposed methodology finds and adds cutting planes based on structural insights about bus angle-differences along paths. Several theorems are proposed which show the validity of these cutting planes onto the underlying mathematical formulations. The path-based bus angle-difference constraints, which tighten the relaxed feasible region, are used in combination with branch-and-bound to find lower bounds on the optimal investment …

It is well-known that optimizing network topology by switching on and off transmission lines improves the efficiency of power delivery in electrical networks. In fact, the USA Energy Policy Act of 2005 (Section 1223) states that the U.S. should "encourage, as appropriate, the deployment of advanced transmission technologies" including "optimized transmission line configurations". As such, many authors have studied the problem of determining an optimal set of transmission lines to switch off to minimize the cost of meeting a given power demand under the direct current (DC) model of power flow. …
Several recent publications report advances in training optimal decision trees (ODT) using mixed-integer programs (MIP), due to algorithmic advances in integer programming and a growing interest in addressing the inherent suboptimality of heuristic approaches such as CART. In this paper, we propose a novel MIP formulation, based on a 1-norm support vector machine model, to train a multivariate ODT for classification problems. We provide cutting plane techniques that tighten the linear relaxation of the MIP formulation, in order to improve run times to reach optimality. Using 36 data-sets from …
