We consider a second order PDEs system of Parabolic-Elliptic type with chemotactic terms. The system describes the evolution of a biological species "$u$" moving towards a higher concentration of a chemical stimuli "$v$" in a bounded and open domain of $ \mathcal{R}^N$. In the system considered, the chemotaxis sensitivity depends on the gradient of $v$, i.e., the chemotaxis term has the following expression $$- div \left(χu |\nabla v|^{p-2}\nabla v \right),$$ where $χ$ is a positive constant and $p$ satisfies $$p \in (1, \infty), \quad \mbox{ if } N=1 \quad \mbox{ and } \quad p\in \left(1, \frac{N}{N-1}\right), \quad \mbox{ if } N\geq 2.$$ We obtain uniform bounds in time in $L^{\infty}(Ω)$ of the solutions. For the one-dimensional case we prove the existence of infinitely many non-constant steady-states for $p\in (1,2)$ for any $χ$ positive and a given positive mass.
We consider a Parabolic-Elliptic system of PDE's with a chemotactic term in a $N$-dimensional unit ball describing the behavior of the density of a biological species "$u$" and a chemical stimulus "$v$". The system includes a nonlinear chemotactic coefficient depending of ``$\nabla v$", i.e. the chemotactic term is given in the form $$- div (χu |\nabla v|^{p-2} \nabla v), \qquad \mbox{ for } \ p \in ( \frac{N}{N-1},2), \qquad N >2 $$ for a positive constant $χ$ when $v$ satisfies the poisson equation $$- Δv = u - \frac{1}{|Ω|} \int_Ω u_0dx.$$ We study the radially symmetric solutions under the…
We study a modified version of an initial-boundary value problem describing the formation of colony patterns of bacteria \textit{Escherichia Coli}. The original system of three parabolic equations was studied numerically and analytically and gave insights into the underlying mechanisms of chemotaxis. We focus here on the parabolic-elliptic-parabolic approximation and the hyperbolic-elliptic-parabolic limiting system which describes the case of pure chemotactic movement without random diffusion. We first construct local-in-time solutions for the parabolic-elliptic-parabolic system. Then we prov…
We consider the two dimensional parabolic-elliptic Patlak-Keller-Segel model of chemotactic aggregation for radially symmetric initial data. We show the existence of a stable mechanism of singularity formation and obtain a complete description of the associated aggregation process.
In this article we investigate a parabolic-parabolic-elliptic two-species chemotaxis system with weak competition and show global asymptotic stability of the coexistence steady state under a smallness condition on the chemotactic strengths, which seems more natural than the condition previously known. For the proof we rely on the method of eventual comparison, which thereby is shown to be a useful tool even in the presence of chemotactic terms.
It is known that, for the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system with critical porous-medium diffusion in dimension $\RR^d$, $d \ge 3$ (also referred to as the quasilinear Smoluchowski-Poisson equation), there is a critical value of the chemotactic sensitivity (measuring in some sense the strength of the drift term) above which there are solutions blowing up in finite time and below which all solutions are global in time. This global existence result is shown to remain true for the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel system with critical porous-medium type diffusion in dimension $\RR^d$, $d \ge 3…
For the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system in R^2 it has been proved that if the initial mass is less than 8π/χ global solution exist and in the case that the initial mass is larger than 8π/χ blow-up happens. The case of several chemotactic species introduces an additional question: What is the analog for the critical mass obtained for the single species system? We find a threshold curve in the case of two especies case that allows us to determine if the system has blow-up or has a global in time solution.
We revisit the question of global regularity for the Patlak-Keller-Segel (PKS) chemotaxis model. The classical 2D hyperbolic-elliptic model blows up for initial mass M>8π. We consider more realistic scenario which takes into account the flow of the ambient environment induced by harmonic potentials, and thus retain the identical elliptic structure as in the original PKS. Surprisingly, we find that already the simplest case of linear stationary vector field, $Ax^\top$, with large enough amplitude $A$, prevents chemotactic blow-up. Specifically, the presence of such an ambient fluid transport cr…
We consider a system coupling the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel equations to the in- compressible Navier-Stokes equations in spatial dimensions two and three. We establish the local existence of regular solutions and present some blow-up criteria. For two dimensional Navier-Stokes-Keller-Segel equations, regular solutions constructed locally in time are, in reality, extended globally under some assumptions pertinent to experimental observation in [20] on the consumption rate and chemotactic sensitivity. We also show the existence of global weak solutions in spatially three dimensions with r…
We study the finite-time blow-up in two variants of the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system with nonlinear diffusion and logistic source. In $n$-dimensional balls, we consider \begin{align*} \begin{cases} u_t = \nabla \cdot ((u+1)^{m-1}\nabla u - u\nabla v) + λu - μu^{1+κ}, \\ 0 = Δv - \frac1{|Ω|} \int_Ωu + u \end{cases} \tag{JL} \end{align*} and \begin{align*} \begin{cases} u_t = \nabla \cdot ((u+1)^{m-1}\nabla u - u\nabla v) + λu - μu^{1+κ}, \\ 0 = Δv - v + u, \end{cases}\tag{PE} \end{align*} where $λ$ and $μ$ are given spatially radial nonnegative functions and $m, κ> 0$ are given parame…
This paper is concerned with a parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system where both diffusive and chemotactic coefficients (motility functions) depend on the chemical signal density. This system was originally proposed by Keller and Segel in \cite{KS-1971-JTB2} to describe the aggregation phase of {\it Dictyostelium discoideum} cells in response to the secreted chemical signal cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), but the available analytical results are very limited by far. Considering system in a bounded smooth domain with Neumann boundary conditions, we establish the global boundedness of sol…
This paper deals with nonnegative solutions of the Neumann initial-boundary value problem for the fully parabolic chemotaxis-growth system $ (u_{\varepsilon})_t$ $=Δu_{\varepsilon} - \varepsilon \nabla \cdot ( u_\varepsilon \nabla v_\varepsilon) + μu_\varepsilon(1 - u_\varepsilon)$, $ (v_{\varepsilon})_t=Δv_\varepsilon -v_\varepsilon+u_\varepsilon,$ with positive small parameter $\varepsilon>0$ in a bounded convex domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n\geq 1$) with smooth boundary. The solutions converge to the solution $u$ to the Fisher-KPP equation as $\varepsilon\to 0$. It is shown that for all …
In this paper, we study a free boundary problem for a class of parabolic-elliptic type chemotaxis model in high dimensional symmetry domain Ω. By using the contraction mapping principle and operator semigroup approach, we establish the existence of the solution for such kind of chemotaxis system in the domain Ωwith free boundary condition. Besides, we get the explicit formula for the free boundary and show the chemotactic collapse for the solution of the system.
In this paper, we review some results over the last 10-15 years on elliptic and parabolic equations with discontinuous coefficients. We begin with an approach given by N. V. Krylov to parabolic equations in the whole space with VMO$_x$ coefficients. We then discuss some subsequent development including elliptic and parabolic equations with coefficients which are allowed to be merely measurable in one or two space directions, weighted $L_p$ estimates with Muckenhoupt ($A_p$) weights, non-local elliptic and parabolic equations, as well as fully nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations.
We introduce elliptic and parabolic $\mathcal{B}_{1}$ classes that generalize the well-known $\mathfrak{B}_{p}$ classes of DeGiorgi, Ladyzhenskaya and Ural'tseva with $p>1$. New classes are applied to prove pointwise continuity of solutions of elliptic and parabolic equations with nonstandard growth conditions. Our considerations cover new cases of variable exponent and $(p, q)$-phase growth including the ,,singular-degenerate'' parabolic case $p<2<q$.
An $L_{p}$-theory of divergence and non-divergence form elliptic and parabolic equations is presented. The main coefficients are supposed to belong to the class $VMO_{x}$, which, in particular, contains all functions independent of $x$. Weak uniqueness of the martingale problem associated with such equations is obtained.
We give sufficient conditions under which the convergence of finite difference approximations in the space variable of possibly degenerate second order parabolic and elliptic equations can be accelerated to any given order of convergence by Richardson's method.
We construct radial self-similar solutions of the, so called, minimal parabolic-elliptic Keller--Segel model in several space dimensions with radial, nonnegative initial conditions with are below the Chandrasekhar solution -- the singular stationary solution of this system.
We prove weighted and mixed-norm Sobolev estimates for fully nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations in the whole space under a relaxed convexity condition with almost VMO dependence on space-time variables. The corresponding interior and boundary estimates are also obtained.
In this paper we develop a Fefferman-Stein theorem, a Hardy-Littlewood theorem and sharp function estimations in weighted Sobolev spaces. We also provide uniqueness and existence results for second-order elliptic and parabolic partial differential systems in weighed Sobolev spaces.
We investigate existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of fractional parabolic equations satisfying prescribed pointwise conditions at infinity (in space), which can be time- dependent. Moreover, we study the asymptotic behaviour of such solutions. We also consider solutions of elliptic equations satisfying appropriate conditions at infinity.
We establish Schauder estimates for both divergence and non-divergence form second-order elliptic and parabolic equations involving Hölder semi-norms not with respect to all, but only with respect to some of the independent variables.
We study second order equations and systems on non-Lipschitz domains including mixed boundary conditions. The key result is interpolation for suitable function spaces. From this, elliptic and parabolic regularity results are deduced by means of Sneiberg's isomorphism theorem.
We consider the situation when an elliptic problem in a subdomain $Ω_1$ of an $n$-dimensional bounded domain $Ω$ is coupled via inhomogeneous canonical transmission conditions to a parabolic problem in $Ω\setminusΩ_1$. In particular, we can treat elliptic-parabolic equations in bounded domains with discontinuous coefficients. Using Fourier multiplier techniques, we prove an a priori estimate for strong solutions to the equations in $L^p$-Sobolev spaces.
We prove the solvability in Sobolev spaces $W^{1,2}_p$, $p>d+1$, of the terminal-boundary value problem for a class of fully nonlinear parabolic equations, including parabolic Bellman's equations, in bounded cylindrical domains with VMO ``coefficients''. The solvability in $W^{2}_p$, $p>d$, of the corresponding elliptic boundary-value problem is also obtained.
We prove the natural weighted Calderón and Zygmund estimates for solutions to elliptic and parabolic obstacle problems in nondivergence form with discontinuous coefficients and irregular obstacles. We also obtain Morrey regularity results for the Hessian of the solutions and Hölder continuity of the gradient of the solutions.
An Euler-type hyperbolic-parabolic system of chemotactic aggregation describing the vascular network formation is investigated in the critical regularity setting. For small initial data around a constant equilibrium state, the well-posedness of the global classical solution to the Cauchy problem with general pressure laws is established in homogeneous hybrid Besov spaces. Then, the optimal time-decay rates of the global solution are analyzed under an additional regularity assumption on the initial data. Furthermore, the relaxation limit (large friction limit) of the hyperbolic-parabolic system…
In this work, we shall study the nonlinear inverse problems of recovering the Robin coefficients in elliptic and parabolic systems of second order, and establish their local Lipschitz stabilities. Some local Lipschitz stability was derived for an elliptic inverse Robin problem. We shall first restructure the arguments in \cite{chou04} for the local Lipschitz stability so that the stability follows from three basic conditions for the elliptic inverse Robin problem. The new arguments are then generalized to help establish a novel local Lipschitz stability for parabolic inverse Robin problems.
In this paper we study the existence and partial regularity of weak solutions to an elliptic-parabolic system that models the single-phase miscible displacement of one incompressible fluid by another in a porous media. The system is singular and involves quadratic nonlinearity. A partial regularity result is obtained via the Fefferman-Stein inequality.
The aim of this article is to show how certain parabolic theorems follow from their elliptic counterparts. This technique is demonstrated through new proofs of five important theorems in parabolic unique continuation and the regularity theory of parabolic equations and geometric flows. Specifically, we give new proofs of an $L^2$ Carleman estimate for the heat operator, and the monotonicity formulas for the frequency function associated to the heat operator, the two-phase free boundary problem, the flow of harmonic maps, and the mean curvature flow. The proofs rely only on the underlying ellip…
In this paper, we study fully nonlinear second-order elliptic and parabolic equations with Neumann boundary conditions on compact Riemannian manifolds with smooth boundary. We derive oscillation bounds for admissible solutions with Neumann boundary condition $u_ν= ϕ(x)$ assuming the existence of suitable $\mathcal{C}$-subsolutions. We use a parabolic approach to derive a solution of a $k$-Hessian equation with Neumann boundary condition $u_ν= ϕ(x)$ under suitable assumptions.
We prove generalized Fefferman-Stein type theorems on sharp functions with $A_p$ weights in spaces of homogeneous type with either finite or infinite underlying measure. We then apply these results to establish mixed-norm weighted $L_p$-estimates for elliptic and parabolic equations/systems with (partially) BMO coefficients in regular or irregular domains.
We consider linear elliptic and parabolic equations with measurable coefficients and prove two types of $L_{p}$-estimates for their solutions, which were recently used in the theory of fully nonlinear elliptic and parabolic second order equations in \cite{DKL}. The first type is an estimate of the $γ$th norm of the second-order derivatives, where $γ\in(0,1)$, and the second type deals with estimates of the resolvent operators in $L_{p}$ when the first-order coefficients are summable to an appropriate power.
Global existence and boundedness of classical solutions are shown for a parabolic-elliptic chemotaxis system with local sensing when the motility function is assumed to be unbounded at infinity. The cornerstone of the proof is the derivation of $L^\infty$-estimates on the second component of the system and is achieved by various comparison arguments.
We discuss the problem how "bad" may be lower-order coefficients in elliptic and parabolic second order equations to ensure some qualitative properties of solution such as strong maximum principle, Harnack's inequality, Liouville's theorem. The answers are given in terms of the Lebesgue spaces and the Morrey spaces.
We establish global regularity for weak solutions to quasilinear divergence form elliptic and parabolic equations over Lipschitz domains with controlled growth conditions on low order terms. The leading coefficients belong to the class of BMO functions with small mean oscillations with respect to $x$.
By employing the Fourier transform to derive key a priori estimates for the temporal gradient of the chemical signal, we establish the existence of global solutions and hydrodynamic limit of a chemotactic kinetic model with internal states and temporal gradient in one dimension, which is a system of two transport equations coupled to a parabolic equation proposed in [4].
We study boundary gradient estimates for second-order divergence type parabolic and elliptic systems in $C^{1,α}$ domains. The coefficients and data are assumed to be Hölder in the time variable and all but one spatial variables. This type of systems arises from the problems of linearly elastic laminates and composite materials.
Under various conditions, we establish Schauder estimates for both divergence and non-divergence form second-order elliptic and parabolic equations involving Hölder semi-norms not with respect to all, but only with respect to some of the independent variables. A novelty of our results is that the coefficients are allowed to be merely measurable with respect to the other independent variables.
In this paper second-order elliptic and parabolic partial differential systems are considered on $C^1$ domains. Existence and uniqueness results are obtained in terms of Sobolev spaces with weights so that we allow the derivatives of the solutions to blow up near the boundary. The coefficients of the systems are allowed to substantially oscillate or blow up near the boundary.
In this thesis, a unified approach to prove the boundedness of gradients of solutions to degenerate and singular elliptic and parabolic phi-Laplacian systems is presented. At first, a Cacciopoli-type energy inequality with an additional function f which can be chosen freely is proven. Then, Di Giorgi's method is applied using level sets which will lead to L-infinity-estimates on the gradient of the weak solution.
We present some comparison results for solutions to certain non local elliptic and parabolic problems that involve the fractional Laplacian operator and mixed boundary conditions, given by a zero Dirichlet datum on part of the complementary of the domain and zero Neumann data on the rest. These results represent a non local generalization of a Hopf's lemma for elliptic and parabolic problems with mixed conditions. In particular we prove the non local version of the results obtained by J. Dávila and J. Dávila-L. Dupaigne for the classical case respectively.
For a linear, strictly elliptic second order differential operator in divergence form with bounded, measurable coefficients on a Lipschitz domain $Ω$ we show that solutions of the corresponding elliptic problem with Robin and thus in particular with Neumann boundary conditions are Hoelder continuous for sufficiently $L^p$-regular right-hand sides. From this we deduce that the parabolic problem with Robin or Wentzell-Robin boundary conditions are well-posed on $\mathrm{C}(\barΩ)$.
Chemotaxis plays a crucial role in a variety of processes in biology and ecology. In many instances, processes involving chemical attraction take place in fluids. One of the most studied PDE models of chemotaxis is given by Keller-Segel equation, which describes a population density of bacteria or mold which attract chemically to substance they secrete. Solution of Keller-Segel equation can exhibit dramatic collapsing behavior, where the density concentrates positive mass in a measure zero region. A natural question is whether presence of fluid flow can affect singularity formation by mixing t…
In this paper we study the regularity of weak solutions to an elliptic-parabolic system modeling natural network formation. The system is singular and involves cubic nonlinearity. Our investigation reveals that weak solutions are Hölder continuous when the space dimension $N$ is $2$. This is achieved via an inequality associated with the Stummel-Kato class of functions and refinement of a lemma originally due to S. Campanato and C. B. Morrey (\cite{G}, p. 86).
We demonstrate a measure theoretical approach to the local regularity of weak supersolutions to elliptic and parabolic equations in divergence form. In the first part, we show that weak supersolutions become lower semicontinuous after redefinition on a set of measure zero. The proof relies on a general principle, i.e. the De Giorgi type lemma, which offers a unified approach for a wide class of elliptic and parabolic equations, including an anisotropic elliptic equation, the parabolic $p$-Laplace equation, and the porous medium equation. In the second part, we shall show that for parabolic pro…
