Recently, the Nash-style convex integration has been becoming the main scheme for the mathematical study of turbulence, and the main building block of it has been either Beltrami flow (finite mode) or Mikado flow (compactly supported in the physical side). On the other hand, in physics, it is observed that turbulence is composed of a hierarchy of scale-by-scale vortex stretching. Thus our mathematical motivation in this study is to find another type of building blocks accompanied by vortex stretching and scale locality (possibly finitely many Fourier modes). In this paper, we give a complete list of solutions to the 3D Euler equations with finitely many Fourier modes, which is an extension of the corresponding 2D result by Elgindi-Hu-Šverák (2017). In particular, we show that there is no 3D Euler flows with finitely many Fourier modes, except for stationary 2D-like flows and Beltrami flows. We also discuss the case when viscosity and Coriolis effect are present.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the wave equation in the whole space, R^n, with initial data which are distributions supported on finite sets. The main result is a precise description of the geometry of the sets of stationary points of the solutions to the wave equation.
We describe a method to construct smooth and compactly supported solutions of 3D incompressible Euler equations and related models. The method is based on localizable Grad-Shafranov equations and is inspired by the recent result \cite{gav}.
In this paper, we prove the existence of locally non-radial solutions to the stationary 2D Euler equations with compact support but non-concentrated around one or several points. Our solutions are of patch type, have analytic boundary, finite energy and sign-changing vorticity and are new to the best of our knowledge. The proof relies on a new observation that finite energy, stationary solutions with simply-connected vorticity have compactly supported velocity, and an application of the Nash-Moser iteration procedure.
We consider the stability of transonic contact discontinuity for the two-dimensional steady compressible Euler flows in a finitely long nozzle. This is the first work on the mixed-type problem of transonic flows across a contact discontinuity as a free boundary in nozzles. We start with the Euler-Lagrangian transformation to straighten the contact discontinuity in the new coordinates. However, the upper nozzle wall in the subsonic region depending on the mass flux becomes a free boundary after the transformation. Then we develop new ideas and techniques to solve the free-boundary problem in th…
We prove the existence of steady \emph{space quasi-periodic} stream functions, solutions for the Euler equation in vorticity-stream function formulation in the two dimensional channel ${\mathbb R}\times [-1,1]$. These solutions bifurcate from a prescribed shear equilibrium near the Couette flow, whose profile induces finitely many modes of oscillations in the horizontal direction for the linearized problem. Using a Nash-Moser implicit function iterative scheme, near such equilibrium we construct small amplitude, space reversible stream functions slightly deforming the linear solutions and reta…
In this paper, we consider the time evolution of an ideal fluid in a planar bounded domain. We prove that if the initial vorticity is supported in a sufficiently small region with diameter $\varepsilon$, then the time evolved vorticity is also supported in a small region with diameter $d$, $d\leq C\varepsilon^α$ for any $α<\frac{1}{3}$, and the center of the vorticity tends to the point vortex, the motion of which is described by the Kirchhoff-Routh equation.
We develop an integral geometry of stationary Euler equations defining some function $w$ on the Grassmannian of affine lines in the space. This function depends on a putative compactly supported solution $v$ of the system, and we deduce a linear differential equation for $w$. We prove also that the purported annulation of $w$ implies that locally supported solutions of the steady Euler equation in $\mathbb R^3$ are zero.
In this paper, we show the existence of a family of compactly supported smooth vorticities, which are solutions of the 2D incompressible Euler equation and rotate uniformly in time and space.
In this article we consider weak solutions of the Euler-$α$ equations in the full plane. We take, as initial unfiltered vorticity, an arbitrary nonnegative, compactly supported, bounded Radon measure. Global well-posedness for the corresponding initial value problem is due M. Oliver and S. Shkoller. We show that, for all time, the support of the unfiltered vorticity is contained in a disk whose radius grows no faster than $\mathcal{O}((t\log t)^{1/4})$. This result is an adaptation of the corresponding result for the incompressible 2D Euler equations with initial vorticity compactly supported,…
We proposed rigorous definitions of Radon measure solutions for boundary value problems of steady compressible Euler equations which modeling hypersonic-limit inviscid flows passing two-dimensional ramps, and their interactions with still gas and pressureless jets. We proved the Newton-Busemann pressure law of drags of body in hypersonic flow, and constructed various physically interesting measure solutions with density containing Dirac measures supported on curves, also exhibited examples of blow up of certain measure solutions. This established a mathematical foundation for applications in e…
We consider the smooth, compactly supported solutions of the steady 3D Euler equations of incompressible fluids constructed by Gavrilov in 2019, and we study the corresponding fluid particle dynamics. This is an ode analysis, which contributes to the description of Gavrilov's vector field.
We construct a family of steady solutions to the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equation in a general bounded domain, such that the vorticity is supported in two well-separated regions of small diameter and converges to a pair of point vortices with opposite signs. Compared with previous results, we do not need to assume the existence of an isolated local minimum point of the Kirchhoff-Routh function. Moreover, due to their variational nature, the solutions obtained are Lyapunov stable in $L^p$ norm of the vorticity. The proofs are achieved by maximizing the kinetic energy over an approp…
In this paper, we investigate steady Euler flows in a two-dimensional bounded domain. By an adaption of the vorticity method, we prove that for any nonconstant harmonic function $q$, which corresponds to a nontrivial irrotational flow, there exists a family of steady Euler flows with small circulation in which the vorticity is continuous and supported in a small neighborhood of the set of maximum points of $q$ near the boundary, and the corresponding stream function satisfies a semilinear elliptic equation with a given profile function. Moreover, if $q$ has $k$ isolated maximum points $\{\bar{…
In this paper, we study the stability of supersonic contact discontinuity for the two-dimensional steady compressible Euler flows in a finitely long nozzle of varying cross-sections. We formulate the problem as an initial-boundary value problem with the contact discontinuity as a free boundary. To deal with the free boundary value problem, we employ the Lagrangian transformation to straighten the contact discontinuity and then the free boundary value problem becomes a fixed boundary value problem. We develop an iteration scheme and establish some novel estimates of solutions for the first orde…
