Separating the components of redshift due to expansion and peculiar motion in the nearby universe ($z<0.1$) is critical for using Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) to measure the Hubble constant ($H_0$) and the equation-of-state parameter of dark energy ($w$). Here, we study the two dominant 'motions' contributing to nearby peculiar velocities: large-scale, coherent-flow (CF) motions and small-scale motions due to gravitationally associated galaxies deemed to be in a galaxy group. We use a set of 584 low-$z$ SNe from the Pantheon+ sample, and evaluate the efficacy of corrections to these motions by measuring the improvement of SN distance residuals. We study multiple methods for modeling the large and small-scale motions and show that, while group assignments and CF corrections individually contribute to small improvements in Hubble residual scatter, the greatest improvement comes from the combination of the two (relative standard deviation of the Hubble residuals, Rel. SD, improves from 0.167 to 0.157 mag). We find the optimal flow corrections derived from various local density maps significantly reduce Hubble residuals while raising $H_0$ by $\sim0.4$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ as compared to using CMB redshifts, disfavoring the hypothesis that unrecognized local structure could resolve the Hubble tension. We estimate that the systematic uncertainties in cosmological parameters after optimally correcting redshifts are 0.06-0.11 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ in $H_0$ and 0.02-0.03 in $w$ which are smaller than the statistical uncertainties for these measurements: 1.5 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ for $H_0$ and 0.04 for $w$.
We test the possible dipole anisotropy of a Finslerian cosmological model and other three dipole-modulated cosmological models, i.e., the dipole-modulated $\rmΛ$CDM, $w$CDM and Chevallier--Polarski--Linder (CPL) model by using the recently released Pantheon sample of SNe Ia. The Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is used to explore the whole parameter space. We find that the dipole anisotropy is very weak in all cosmological models used. Although the dipole amplitudes of four cosmological models are consistent with zero within $1σ$ uncertainty, the dipole directions are close to the axial …
We observe damped temporal oscillations in the scale factor at a dominant frequency of ~ 7 cycles/Hubble-time in the Pantheon Compilation of 1048 type Ia supernovae (SNe). The residual oscillations observed in the Pantheon data closely matches and reaffirms our initial observation of oscillations from earlier SNe data (primarily SNLS3, 2011) at 2-sigma confidence. The nearly identical shapes in amplitude, frequency, phase and damping constant makes it highly likely the signal is real. Furthermore, 2/3 of the Pantheon SNe cover different portions of the sky compared with SNLS3 strengthening thi…
We employ the hemisphere comparison (HC) method and the dipole fitting (DF) method to investigate the cosmic anisotropy in the recently released Pantheon sample of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and five combinations among Pantheon. For the HC method, we find the maximum anisotropy level in the full Pantheon sample is $\mathrm{AL}_{max}=0.361\pm0.070$ and corresponding direction $(l,b)=({123.05^{\circ}}^{+11.25^{\circ}}_{-4.22^{\circ}}, {4.78^{\circ}}^{+1.80^{\circ}}_{-8.36^{\circ}})$. A robust check shows the statistical significance of maximum anisotropy level is about $2.1σ$. We also find that…
The assumption of homogeneity and isotropy on large scales is one of the main hypotheses of the standard cosmological model. In this paper, we revisit a test of cosmological isotropy using type Ia supernova (SN Ia) distances provided by the latest SN Ia compilation available, namely, the Pantheon compilation. We perform a model-independent analysis by selecting low-redshift subsamples lying in two redshift intervals, i.e., z $\leq$ 0.10 and z $\leq$ 0.20. By mapping the directional asymmetry of cosmological parameters across the sky, we show that the current SN Ia data favor the hypothesis of …
Using data from the Pantheon SN Ia compilation and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we propose an estimator for weak lensing convergence incorporating positional and photometric data of foreground galaxies. The correlation between this and the Hubble diagram residuals of the supernovae has $3.6σ$ significance, and is consistent with weak lensing magnification due to dark matter halos centered on galaxies. We additionally constrain the properties of the galactic haloes, such as the mass-to-light ratio $Γ$ and radial profile of the halo matter density $ρ(r)$. We derive a new relationship for…
Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are powerful tools for measuring the expansion history of the universe, but the impact of dust around SNe Ia remains unknown and is a critical systematic uncertainty. One way to improve our empirical description of dust is to analyse highly reddened SNe Ia ($E(B-V)>0.4$, roughly equivalent to the fitted SALT2 light-curve parameter $c>0.3$). With the recently released Pantheon+ sample, there are 57 SNe Ia that were removed because of their high colour alone (with colours up to $c=1.61$), which can provide enormous leverage on understanding line-of-sight $R_V$. Previo…
In this paper, we study the anisotropy of cosmic acceleration the using Pantheon sample, which includes 1048 spectroscopically confirmed Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) covering the redshift range $0.01 < z < 2.3$. In hemisphere comparison method, we find the dipole direction is $(l = 37 \pm 40^{\circ}, b = 33 \pm 16^{\circ})$ with the maximum anisotropy level of $δ=0.136 {}^{+0.009}_{-0.005}$. From the dipole fitting method, we find that the magnitude of anisotropy is $A = (3.7 {}^{+2.5}_{-3.7}) \times 10^{-4}$, and the direction of the dipole $(l = 329^{\circ}{}^{+ 101^{\circ}}_{-28^{\circ}}, b …
The cosmological principle assumes that the universe is homogeneous and isotropic on cosmic scales. There exist many works testing the cosmic homogeneity and/or the cosmic isotropy of the universe in the literature. In fact, some observational hints of the cosmic anisotropy have been claimed. However, we note that the paucity of the data considered in the literature might be responsible for the `found' cosmic anisotropy. So, it might disappear in a large enough sample. Very recently, the Pantheon sample consisting of 1048 type Ia supernovae (SNIa) has been released, which is the largest spectr…
I highlight several concerns regarding the consistency of Type Ia supernova data in the publicly available Pantheon and JLA compilations. The measured heliocentric redshifts (zhel) of $\sim$150 SNe Ia as reported in the Pantheon catalogue are significantly discrepant from those in JLA - with 58 having differences amounting to between 5 and 137 times the quoted measurement uncertainty. The discrepancy seems to have been introduced in the process of rectifying a previously reported issue. The Pantheon catalogue until very recently had the redshifts of all SNe Ia up to z $\sim$ 0.3 modified under…
We examine the redshifts of a comprehensive set of published Type Ia supernovae, and provide a combined, improved catalogue with updated redshifts. We improve on the original catalogues by using the most up-to-date heliocentric redshift data available; ensuring all redshifts have uncertainty estimates; using the exact formulae to convert heliocentric redshifts into the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) frame; and utilising an improved peculiar velocity model that calculates local motions in redshift-space and more realistically accounts for the external bulk flow at high-redshifts. In total we…
Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) measurements of the Hubble constant, H$_0$, the cosmological mass density, $Ω_M$, and the dark energy equation-of-state parameter, $w$, rely on numerous SNe surveys using distinct photometric systems across three decades of observation. Here, we determine the sensitivities of the upcoming SH0ES+Pantheon+ constraints on H$_0$, $Ω_M$, and $w$ to unknown systematics in the relative photometric zeropoint calibration between the 17 surveys that comprise the Pantheon+ supernovae data set. Varying the zeropoints of these surveys simultaneously with the cosmological paramet…
We present optical light curves, redshifts, and classifications for 365 spectroscopically confirmed Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) discovered by the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) Medium Deep Survey. We detail improvements to the PS1 SN photometry, astrometry and calibration that reduce the systematic uncertainties in the PS1 SN Ia distances. We combine the subset of 279 PS1 SN Ia ($0.03 < z < 0.68$) with useful distance estimates of SN Ia from SDSS, SNLS, various low-z and HST samples to form the largest combined sample of SN Ia consisting of a total of 1048 SN Ia ranging from $0.01 < z < 2.3$, which we call…
Recent studies have shown that the observed colour distributions of Type Ia SNe (SNIa) are well-described by a combination of distributions from dust and intrinsic colour. Here we present a new forward-modeling fitting method (Dust2Dust) to measure the parent dust and colour distributions, including their dependence on host-galaxy mass. At each fit step, the SNIa selection efficiency is determined from a large simulated sample that is re-weighted to reflect the proposed distributions. We use five separate metrics to constrain the Dust2Dust parameters: distribution of fitted light-curve colour …

The Hubble law (HL) governs the low-redshift (low-z) evolution of the distance of an object. However, there is a lack of an investigation of its validity and effective radius for a long time, since the low-z background data with a high precision is scarce. The latest Type Ia supernovae sample Pantheon+ having a significant increase of low-z data provides an excellent opportunity to test the HL. We propose a generalized HL and implement the first modern test of the HL with Pantheon+. We obtain the constraint on the deviation parameter $α=1.00118\pm0.00044$, confirm the validity of linear HL wit…
In the context of cosmography approach and using the data of Hubble diagram for supernovae, quasars and gamma-ray bursts, we study some DE parametrizations and also the concordance $Λ$CDM universe. Using the different combinations of data sample including ({\it i}) supernovae (Pantheon), ({\it ii}) Pantheon + quasars and ({\it iii}) Pantheon + quasars + gamma-ray bursts and applying the minimization of $χ^2$ function of distance modulus of data samples in the context of Markov Chain Monte Carlo method, we first obtain the constrained values of the cosmographic parameters in model independent c…

Here we present 1701 light curves of 1550 spectroscopically confirmed Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) that will be used to infer cosmological parameters as part of the Pantheon+ SN analysis and the SH0ES (Supernovae and H0 for the Equation of State of dark energy) distance-ladder analysis. This effort is one part of a series of works that perform an extensive review of redshifts, peculiar velocities, photometric calibration, and intrinsic-scatter models of SNe Ia. The total number of light curves, which are compiled across 18 different surveys, is a significant increase from the first Pantheon ana…
We study the compression of information present in the correlated perturbations to the luminosity distance in the low-redshift ($z<0.1$) supernovae Ia due to peculiar velocities of these supernovae. We demonstrate that the naïve compression into angular velocity power spectrum does not work efficiently, due to thickness of the spherical shell over which the supernovae are measured. Instead, we show that measurements can be compressed into measurements of $f^2P(k)$, where $f$ is the logarithmic rate of growth of linear perturbations and $P(k)$ is their power spectrum. We develop an optimal quad…
The heliocentric redshifts ($z_\mathrm{hel}$) reported for 150 Type Ia supernovae in the Pantheon compilation are significantly discrepant from their corresponding values in the JLA compilation. Both catalogues include corrections to the redshifts and magnitudes of the supernovae to account for the motion of the heliocentric frame relative to the `CMB rest frame', as well as corrections for the directionally coherent bulk motion of local galaxies with respect to this frame. The latter is done employing modelling of peculiar velocities which assume the $Λ$CDM cosmological model but nevertheless…
Peculiar velocities of type Ia supernova (SNIa) host galaxies affect the dark-energy parameter constraints in a small but very specific way: the parameters are biased in a single direction in parameter space that is a-priori knowable for a given SNIa dataset. We demonstrate the latter fact with a combination of inference from a cosmological N-body simulation with overwhelming statistics applied to the Pantheon SNIa data set, then confirm it by simple quantitative arguments. We quantify small modifications to the current analyses that would ensure that the effect of cosmological parameters is e…
We show that peculiar velocities of Type Ia supernovae can be used to derive constraints on the sum of neutrino masses, $Σm_ν$, and dark energy equation of state, $w = w_0+w_a(1-a)$, from measurements of the magnitude-redshift relation, complementary to galaxy redshift and weak lensing surveys. Light from a supernova propagates through a perturbed Universe so the luminosity distance is modified from its homogeneous prediction. This modification is proportional to the matter density fluctuation and its time derivative due to gravitational lensing and peculiar velocity respectively. At low redsh…
When Type Ia supernovae are used to infer cosmological parameters, their luminosities are compared to those from a homogeneous cosmology. In this note we propose a test to examine to what degree SN Ia have been observed on lines of sight where the average matter density is \textit{not} representative of the homogeneous background. We apply our test to the Pantheon SN Ia compilation, and find two redshift bins which indicate a moderate bias to over-density at $\sim 2σ$. We modify the Tripp estimator to explicitly de-lens SN Ia magnitudes, and show that this reduces scatter of Hubble diagram res…
The dependence of Hubble parameter on redshift can be determined directly from the dipole of luminosity distance to Supernovae Ia. We investigate the possibility of using the data on dipole of the luminosity distance obtained from the Supernovae Ia compilations SDSS, Union2.1, JLA and Pantheon to distinguish the dark energy models.
Weak lensing of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is a systematic uncertainty in the use of SNe Ia as standard candles, as well as an independent cosmological probe, if the corresponding magnification distribution can be extracted from data. We study the peak brightness distribution of SNe Ia in the Pantheon sample, and find that the high $z$ sub-sample shows distinct weak lensing signatures compared to the low $z$ subsample: a long tail at the bright end due to high magnifications and a shift of the peak brightness toward the faint end, consistent with findings from earlier work. We have developed …
Peculiar motion of the solar system, determined from the dipole anisotropy in the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR), has given a velocity $370$ km s$^{-1}$ along RA$=168^{\circ}$, Dec$=-7^{\circ}$. Subsequent peculiar motion determinations from the number counts, sky brightness or redshift dipoles observed in large samples of distant radio galaxies and quasars yielded peculiar velocities two to ten times larger than CMBR, though in all cases the directions matched with the CMBR dipole. Here we introduce a novel technique for determining the peculiar motion from the magnitude-redshif…

Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) are widely used to measure distances in the Universe. Despite the recent progress achieved in SN Ia standardisation, the Hubble diagram still shows some remaining intrinsic dispersion. The remaining scatter in supernova luminosity could be due to the environmental effects that are not yet accounted for by the current standardisation methods. In this work, we compare the local and global colour $(U-V)$, the local star formation rate, and the host stellar mass to the host galaxy morphology. The observed trends suggest that the host galaxy morphology is a good paramete…
In this work, we explore the cosmological consequences of the latest Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) data-set, Pantheon, by adopting the $wCDM$ model. The Pantheon data-set is the largest SN Ia samples till now, which contains 1048 supernovae on the redshift range $0 < z < 2.3$. Here we take into account three kinds of SN Ia statistics techniques, including: 1. magnitude statistics (MS), which is the traditional SN Ia statistics technique; 2. flux statistics (FS), which bases on the flux-averaging (FA) method; 3. improved flux statistics (IFS), which combines the advantages of MS and FS. It should b…
We investigate two new observational perspectives in the context of torsional gravitational modification of general relativity, i.e., the $f(T)$ gravity: i) We use Pantheon data of type Ia supernovae motivated by a time variation of the Newton's constant on the supernovae distance modulus relation, and find that a joint analysis with Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), i.e., Pantheon+BAO+BBN, provides constraints on the effective free parameter of the theory to be well compatible with the $Λ$CDM prediction; ii) We present the framework of $f(T)$ gravity at th…
The assumption of isotropy -- that the Universe looks the same in all directions on large scales -- is fundamental to the standard cosmological model. This model forms the building blocks of essentially all of our cosmological knowledge to date. It is therefore critical to empirically test in which regimes its core assumptions hold. Anisotropies in the cosmic expansion are expected on small scales due to nonlinear structures in the late Universe, however, the extent to which these anisotropies might impact our low-redshift observations remains to be fully tested. In this paper, we use fully ge…
The most intriguing question of modern astronomy is the question of our Universe formation. The Hubble diagram analysis with Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) is widely used to estimate the cosmological parameters with high accuracy. The cosmological measurements allow us to better understand the early stages of the Universe evolution. Nevertheless, the redshift on the SN Ia Hubble diagram includes the contribution from the unknown peculiar velocities that decreases the accuracy of such measurements. We consider the contamination of peculiar velocities of the host galaxies for those SNe that explode…
Using the Pantheon data set of Type Ia supernovae, a recent publication (R20 in this work) reports a $~2σ$ detection of oscillations in the expansion history of the universe. Applying the R20 methodology to simulated Pantheon data, we determine that these oscillations likely arise from analysis artifacts. The uneven spacing of Type Ia supernovae in redshift space and the complicated analysis method of R20 impose a structured throughput function. When analyzed with the R20 prescription, about $11\%$ of artificial $Λ$CDM data sets produce a stronger oscillatory signal than the actual Pantheon da…
Peculiar velocities are one of the only probes of very large-scale mass density fluctuations in the nearby Universe. We present new "minimal variance" bulk flow measurements based upon the "First Amendment" compilation of 245 Type Ia supernovae (SNe) peculiar velocities and find a bulk flow of 249 +/- 76 km/s in the direction l= 319 +/- 18 deg, b = 7 +/- 14 deg. The SNe bulk flow is consistent with the expectations of ΛCDM. However, it is also marginally consistent with the bulk flow of a larger compilation of non-SNe peculiar velocities (Watkins, Feldman, & Hudson 2009). By comparing the SNe …
In this work we utilise the most recent publicly available type Ia supernova (SN Ia) compilations and implement a well formulated cosmological model based on Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi metric in presence of cosmological constant $Λ$ ($Λ$LTB) to test for signatures of large local inhomogeneities at $z\leq0.15$. Local underdensities in this redshift range have been previously found based on luminosity density (LD) data and galaxy number counts. Our main constraints on the possible local void using the Pantheon SN Ia dataset are: redshift size of $z_{\rm size}=0.068^{+0.021}_{-0.030}$; density contras…
