If massive neutrinos are Majorana particles, then the lepton number should be violated in nature and neutrino-antineutrino oscillations $ν^{}_α\leftrightarrow \overlineν^{}_β$ (for $α, β= e, μ, τ$) will definitely take place. In the present paper, we study the properties of CP violation in neutrino-antineutrino oscillations with the non-unitary leptonic flavor mixing matrix, which is actually a natural prediction in the canonical seesaw model due to the mixing between light and heavy Majorana neutrinos. The oscillation probabilities $P(ν^{}_α\to \overlineν^{}_β)$ and $P(\overlineν^{}_α\to ν^{}_β)$ are derived, and the CP asymmetries ${\cal A}^{}_{αβ} \equiv [P(ν^{}_α\to \overlineν^{}_β) - P(\overlineν^{}_α\to ν^{}_β)]/[P(ν^{}_α\to \overlineν^{}_β) + P(\overlineν^{}_α\to ν^{}_β)]$ are also calculated. Taking into account current experimental bounds on the leptonic unitarity violation, we show that the CP asymmetries induced by the non-unitary mixing parameters can significantly deviate from those in the limit of a unitary leptonic flavor mixing.
If massive neutrinos are Majorana particles, then the lepton number should be violated and neutrino-antineutrino oscillations will take place. In this talk, we present the properties of CP violation in neutrino-antineutrino oscillations with a non-unitary leptonic flavor mixing matrix, which naturally arises in the type-I seesaw model due to the mixing between light and heavy Majorana neutrinos. Taking into account current experimental bounds on the leptonic unitarity violation, we show that the CP asymmetries induced by the non-unitary mixing parameters can significantly deviate from those in…
The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V_ub| can be extracted from the rate for the semi-leptonic decay B -> pi + l + antineutrino_l, with little theoretical uncertainty, provided the hadronic form factor for the B -> pi transition can be measured from some other B decay. In here, we suggest using the decay B -> pi Jψ. This is a color suppressed decay, and it cannot be properly described within the usual factorization approximation; we use instead a simple and very general phenomenological model for the b d Jψvertex. In order to relate the hadronic form factors in the B -> pi Jψand B ->…
We review the idea of leptonic unitary triangles and extend the concept of the recently proposed unitary boomerangs to the lepton sector. Using a convenient parameterization of the lepton mixing, we provide approximate expressions for the side lengths and the angles of the six different triangles and give examples of leptonic unitary boomerangs. Possible applications of the leptonic unitary boomerangs are also briefly discussed.
We investigate the possibility to find the leptonic CP-violation by combining the reactor experiment with the superbeam experiment without antineutrino superbeam. We show also how much the sensitivity on CP-violating phase delta is affected by the fact that we have not known the sign of Delta m^2_31.
The first hint of the leptonic CP phase $δ_{CP}=-90^\circ$ has already came from the long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment T2K. This hint is derived from the neutrino data of T2K and currently it is running in the antineutrino mode. In this work we ask the question what should be the proportion of neutrino and antineutrino running of the T2K experiment to discover CP violation in the leptonic sector.
A low-energy non-unitary leptonic mixing matrix is a generic effect of a large class of theories accounting for neutrino masses. It is shown how the extra CP-odd phases of a general non-unitary matrix allow for sizeable CP-asymmetries in channels other than those dominant in the standard unitary case. The $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ channel turns out to be an excellent tool to further constrain moduli and phases. Furthermore, we clarify the relationship between our approach and the so-called "non-standard neutrino interactions" schemes: the sensitivities explored here apply as well to such constructions.
Some theories of new physics accounting for neutrino masses can give rise to a low-energy non-unitary leptonic mixing matrix. It is shown that the CP-asymmetries in the $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ channel are an excellent probe of such new physics. In adition, we clarify the relationship betweeen our framework and the so called "non-standard neutrino interactions" scenarios: the sensitivities explored here apply as well to such constructions, except for extremely fine-tuned cancellations.
Combining neutrino oscillations at T2K or T2HK with antineutrinos oscillations from muon decay at rest (DAR) allows a determination of the leptonic CP-violating phase delta. The degeneracies of this phase with theta13 and theta23 are broken and delta can be reliably distinguished from 180-delta. We present the sensitivity to delta of T2(H)K together with a muon DAR experiment using Super-K as a near detector and Hyper-K at the Tochibora site as a far detector.
Non-unitary neutrino mixing implies an extra CP violating phase that can fake the leptonic Dirac CP phase $δ_{CP}$ of the simplest three-neutrino mixing benchmark scheme. This would hinder the possibility of probing for CP violation in accelerator-type experiments. We take T2K and T2HK as examples to demonstrate the degeneracy between the "standard" (or "unitary") and "non-unitary" CP phases. We find, under the assumption of non-unitary mixing, that their CP sensitivities severely deteriorate. Fortunately, the TNT2K proposal of supplementing T2(H)K with a $μ$DAR source for better measurement o…
A low energy non-unitary leptonic mixing matrix is a generic feature of many extensions of the Standard Model. In such a case, the task of future precision neutrino oscillation experiments is more ambitious than measuring the three mixing angles and the leptonic (Dirac) CP-phase, i.e., the accessible parameters of a unitary leptonic mixing matrix. A non-unitary mixing matrix has 13 parameters that affect neutrino oscillations, out of which four are CP-violating. In the scheme of Minimal Unitarity Violation (MUV) we analyse the potential of a Neutrino Factory for determining or constraining the…
We study the prospects of pinning down the effects of non-standard antineutrino interactions in the source and in the detector at the Daya Bay neutrino facility. It is well known that if the non-standard interactions in the detection process are of the same type as those in the production, their net effect can be subsumed into a mere shift in the measured value of the leptonic mixing angle theta_13. Relaxing this assumption, the ratio of the antineutrino spectra measured by the Daya Bay far and near detectors is distorted in a characteristic way, and good fits based on the standard oscillation…
The octant of the atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$ is still undetermined by neutrino oscillation experiments. Long-baseline experiments like NO$ν$A, T2K and DUNE offer good prospects for determining the octant of $θ_{23}$. However, their capability to do so may be compromised by the possible presence of non-unitarity in the leptonic mixing matrix. In this paper, we study in detail the octant degeneracy with and without non-unitarity at the level of oscillation probabilities and events for these experiments. We also analyze their octant sensitivity and discovery reach and show that they are ha…
A low-energy non-unitary leptonic mixing matrix is a generic effect of some theories of new physics accounting for neutrino masses. We show how the extra CP-phases of a general non-unitary matrix allow for sizeable CP-asymmetries in the $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ channel. This CP-asymmetries turns out to be an excellent probe of such new physics.
We derive constraints on the mixing of heavy right-handed neutrinos with the SM fields in the most general Seesaw scenario where the heavy neutrinos are integrated out. Among the electroweak and flavour observables included in the global fit, $μ\rightarrow eγ$ sets the present strongest bound on the additional neutrino mixing, while in the future it will be dominated by $μ-e$ conversion in nuclei. Increasing its sensitivity in future experiments could probe Non-Unitarity in Lepton Flavour Violating processes. Nevertheless, in order to determine completely model-independent constraints, we prov…
We investigate the relation between non-unitarity of the leptonic mixing matrix and leptogenesis. We discuss how all parameters of the canonical type-I seesaw mechanism can, in principle, be reconstructed from the neutrino mass matrix and the deviation of the effective low-energy leptonic mixing matrix from unitary. When the mass M' of the lightest right-handed neutrino is much lighter than the masses of the others, we show that its decay asymmetries within flavour-dependent leptogenesis can be expressed in terms of two contributions, one depending on the unique dimension five (d=5) operator g…
The long-baseline experiment T2K in Japan has collected data in the neutrino mode corresponding to an exposure of $6.57 \times 10^{20}$ POT (Protons on Target) and currently it is running in the antineutrino mode. The main aim of the antineutrino run is to measure the leptonic phase $δ_{CP}$ which may help to understand the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe. In this work we show that in T2K, antineutrinos are required only for removing the wrong octant solutions which in turn improves the CP sensitivity. If however the octant is known then pure neutrino run is capable of giving the m…
In this paper we consider a Beta Beam setup that tries to leverage at most existing European facilities: i.e. a setup that takes advantage of facilities at CERN to boost high-Q ions (8Li and 8B) aiming at a far detector located at L = 732 Km in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. The average neutrino energy for 8Li and 8B ions boosted at γ~ 100 is in the range E_ν= [1,2] GeV, high enough to use a large iron detector of the MINOS type at the far site. We perform, then, a study of the neutrino and antineutrino fluxes needed to measure a CP-violating phase delta in a significant part of the pa…
The leptonic widths of high $ψ$-resonances are calculated in a coupled-channel model with unitary inelasticity, where analytical expressions for mixing angles between $(n+1)\,^3S_1$ and $n\,^3D_1$ states and probabilities $Z_i$ of the $c\bar c$ component are derived. Since these factors depend on energy (mass), different values of mixing angles $θ(ψ(4040))=27.7^\circ$ and $θ(ψ(4160))=29.5^\circ$, $Z_1\,(ψ(4040))=0.76$, and $Z_2\,(ψ(4160))=0.62$ are obtained. It gives the leptonic widths $Γ_{ee}(ψ(4040))=Z_1\, 1.17=0.89$~keV, $Γ_{ee}(ψ(4160))=Z_2\, 0.76=0.47$~keV in good agreement with experime…
The main aim of the T2K experiment in Japan is to discover CP violation in the leptonic sector by measuring the Dirac phase $δ_{CP}$. For that purpose T2K has already started collecting data in both neutrino and antineutrino mode. But in this work we will show that, in T2K the main role of the antineutrinos is to resolve the octant degeneracy. If the octant is known then the pure neutrino run of T2K is capable to give the maximum CP sensitivity. On the other hand in the experiment like NO$ν$A, antineutrinos are still useful even when octant is known. Thus we propose that let T2K run in the dom…
Testing, in a non-trivial, model-independent way, the hypothesis that the three-massive-neutrinos paradigm properly describes nature is among the main goals of the current and the next generation of neutrino oscillation experiments. In the coming decade, the DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande experiments will be able to study the oscillation of both neutrinos and antineutrinos with unprecedented precision. We explore the ability of these experiments, and combinations of them, to determine whether the parameters that govern these oscillations are the same for neutrinos and antineutrinos, as prescribed b…
In this paper, we perform a comparative analysis between the future proposed long-baseline experiments ESSnuSB and T2HK in measuring the leptonic CP phase $δ_{\rm CP}$. In particular, we study the effect of the neutrino mass ordering degeneracy and the leptonic mixing angle $θ_{23}$ octant degeneracy in the measurement of leptonic CP violation and precision for both experiments. Since the ESSnuSB (T2HK) experiment probes the second (first) oscillation maximum to study neutrino oscillations, the effect of these degeneracies are significantly different in both experiments. Our main conclusion is…
The investigation of the oscillation pattern induced by the sterile neutrinos might determine the oscillation parameters, and at the same time, allow to probe CPT symmetry in the leptonic sector through neutrino-antineutrino mass inequality. We propose to use a large scintillation detector like JUNO or LENA to detect electron neutrinos and electron antineutrinos from MCi electron capture or beta decay sources. Our calculations indicate that such an experiment is realistic and could be performed in parallel to the current research plans for JUNO and RENO. Requiring at least 5$σ$ confidence leve…
We propose an interpretation of the two neutrino initiated cascade events with PeV energies observed by IceCube: Ultra-high energy cosmic ray protons (or Fe nuclei) scatter on CMB photons through the Delta-resonance (the Berezinsky-Zatsepin process) yielding charged pions and neutrons. The neutron decays give electron-antineutrinos which undergo neutrino oscillations to populate all antineutrino flavors, but the electron-antineutrino flux remains dominant. At 6.3 PeV electron-antineutrino energy their annihilation on electrons in the IceCube detector is enhanced by the Glashow resonance (the W…
We investigate the extent to which leptonic CP-violation in (3+2) sterile neutrino models leads to different oscillation probabilities for $\barν_μ\to\barν_e$ and $ν_μ\toν_e$ oscillations at MiniBooNE. We are using a combined analysis of short-baseline (SBL) oscillation results, including the LSND and null SBL results, to which we impose additional constraints from atmospheric oscillation data. We obtain the favored regions in MiniBooNE oscillation probability space for both (3+2) CP-conserving and (3+2) CP-violating models. We further investigate the allowed CP-violation phase values and the …
We determine the elements of the leptonic mixing matrix, without assuming unitarity, combining data from neutrino oscillation experiments and weak decays. To that end, we first develop a formalism for studying neutrino oscillations in vacuum and matter when the leptonic mixing matrix is not unitary. To be conservative, only three light neutrino species are considered, whose propagation is generically affected by non-unitary effects. Precision improvements within future facilities are discussed as well.
We investigate non-standard interaction effects in antineutrino-electron scattering experiments with baselines short enough to ignore standard oscillation phenomena. The setup is free of ambiguities from the interference between new physics and oscillation effects and is sensitive to both semileptonic new physics at the source and purely leptonic new physics in the weak interaction scattering at the detector. We draw on the TEXONO experiment as the model system, extending its analysis of non-standard interaction effects at the detector to include the generally allowed non-standard interaction …
The existence of CP-violation in the leptonic sector is one of the most important issues for modern science. Neutrino physics is a key to the solution of this problem. JUNO (under construction) is the near future of neutrino physics. However CP-violation is not a priority for the current scientific program. We estimate the capability of $δ_{\rm CP}$ measurement, assuming a combination of the JUNO detector and a superconductive cyclotron as the antineutrino source. This method of measuring CP-violation is an alternative to conventional beam experiments. A significance level of 3$σ$ can be reach…
If finite but tiny masses of the three active neutrinos are generated via the canonical seesaw mechanism with three heavy sterile neutrinos, the 3\times 3 Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata neutrino mixing matrix V will not be exactly unitary. This kind of indirect unitarity violation can be probed in a precision reactor antineutrino oscillation experiment, but it may be entangled with terrestrial matter effects as both of them are very small. We calculate the probability of \overlineν_e \to \overlineν_e oscillations in a good analytical approximation, and find that, besides the zero-distance eff…
We consider massive Dirac electron antineutrino to be observed in the muon decay, $μ^{-} \rightarrow e^- +\barν_{e} + ν_μ$, at rest in the LAB reference frame. A computation of $\barν_{e}$ differential direct spectral shape and angular distribution was performed. This has resulted in transverse component of the neutrino polarization emerging from the nonstandard S, T sector of the Lorentz structure in the Fermi leptonic charged weak interaction. The calculation is based on empirical values of the coupling parameters.
Precision measurements of leptonic mixing parameters and the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy are the primary goals of the forthcoming medium-baseline reactor antineutrino experiments, such as JUNO and RENO-50. In this work, we investigate the impact of nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSIs) on the measurements of {sin^2 theta_{12}, Delta m^2_{21}} and {sin^2 theta_{13}, Delta m^2_{31}}, and on the sensitivity to the neutrino mass hierarchy, at the medium-baseline reactor experiments by assuming a typical experimental setup. It turns out that the true mixing parameter sin^2 theta…
We present a comprehensive study of the three-active plus $N$ sterile neutrino model as a framework for constraining leptonic unitarity violation induced at energy scales much lower than the electroweak scale. We formulate a perturbation theory with expansion in small unitarity violating matrix element $W$ while keeping (non-$W$ suppressed) matter effect to all orders. We show that under the same condition of sterile state masses $0.1\, \text{eV}^2 \lesssim m^2_{J} \lesssim (1-10)\, \text{GeV}^2$ as in vacuum, assuming typical accelerator based long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, on…
In terms of flavor invariants, we establish the intimate connection between leptonic CP violation in the canonical seesaw model for neutrino masses and that in the seesaw effective field theory (SEFT). For the first time, we calculate the Hilbert series and explicitly construct the primary flavor invariants in the SEFT by considering both the dimension-five Weinberg operator ${\cal O}^{αβ}_5 = \overline{\ell^{}_{α\rm L}} \widetilde{H} \widetilde{H}^{\rm T} \ell^{\rm C}_{β\rm L}$ and the dimension-six operator ${\cal O}^{αβ}_6 = \overline{\ell^{}_{α\rm L}} \widetilde{H} {\rm i} \not\!\partial \…
The 3X3 Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata-Pontecorvo (MNSP) lepton flavor mixing matrix may be slightly non-unitary if the three active neutrinos are coupled with sterile neutrinos. We show that it is in principle possible to test whether the relation |V_{e1}|^2 + |V_{e2}|^2 + |V_{e3}|^2 = 1 holds or not in a precision reactor antineutrino oscillation experiment, such as the recently proposed Daya Bay II experiment. We explore three categories of non-unitary effects on the 3X3 MNSP matrix: 1) the indirect effect in the (3+ 3) flavor mixing scenario where the three heavy sterile neutrinos do not take part i…
We present a global analysis of the semileptonic and purely Leptonic nonuniversal and flavor-changing nonstandard neutrino interactions in all the known short-baseline neutrino- and antineutrino-electron scattering experiments. The nonstandard effects at the source and at the detector can be more transparent in these experiments because of the negligibly small ratio between the baselines and the neutrino energies, which is not enough for the neutrinos to oscillate, and thus can be sensitive to the new physics at the both ends. We use data from two electron-neutrino electron scattering experime…
Given the best-fit results of six neutrino oscillation parameters, we plot the Dirac and Majorana unitarity triangles (UTs) of the 3\times 3 lepton flavor mixing matrix to show their real shapes for the first time. The connections of the Majorana UTs with neutrino-antineutrino oscillations and neutrino decays are explored, and the possibilities of right or isosceles UTs are discussed. In the neutrino mass limit of m_1 \to 0 or m_3 \to 0, which is allowed by current experimental data, we show how the six triangles formed by the effective Majorana neutrino masses \langle m\rangle_{αβ} (for α, β=…
We propose a universal mixing hypothesis between quark and lepton sectors at high energy scale (probably GUT scale) where quark-lepton universality holds. Namely in the charged lepton diagonal base, all the other mass matrices for up and down quarks and neutrinos are diagonalized by the same unitary matrix except for the phase elements. Thanks to this hypothesis, the observed values of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark mixing matrix and the mixing angles $θ_{12}$ and $θ_{23}$ in the Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (MNS) lepton mixing matrix can predict the unknown magnitudes of the mixing angle $…
We derive predictions for the Dirac phase $δ$ present in the $3\times 3$ unitary neutrino mixing matrix $U = U_e^{\dagger} \, U_ν$, where $U_e$ and $U_ν$ are $3\times 3$ unitary matrices which arise from the diagonalisation, respectively, of the charged lepton and the neutrino mass matrices. We consider forms of $U_e$ and $U_ν$ allowing us to express $δ$ as a function of three neutrino mixing angles, present in $U$, and the angles contained in $U_ν$. We consider several forms of $U_ν$ determined by, or associated with, symmetries, tri-bimaximal, bimaximal, etc., for which the angles in $U_ν$ a…
Tribimaximal leptonic mixing is a mass-independent mixing scheme consistent with the present solar and atmospheric neutrino data. By conveniently decomposing the effective neutrino mass matrix associated to it, we derive generic predictions in terms of the parameters governing the neutrino masses. We extend this phenomenological analysis to other mass-independent mixing schemes which are related to the tribimaximal form by a unitary transformation. We classify models that produce tribimaximal leptonic mixing through the group structure of their family symmetries in order to point out that ther…
A unified description of fermionic mixing is proposed which assumes that in certain basis ($i$) a single complex unitary matrix $V$ diagonalizes mass matrices of all fermions to the leading order, ($ii$) the SU(5) relation $M_d=M_l^T$ exists between the mass matrices of the down quarks and the charged leptons, and ($iii$) $M_d^\dagger=M_d$. These assumptions automatically lead to different mixing patterns for quarks and leptons: quarks remain unmixed to leading order ($i. e. V_{CKM}=1$) while leptons have non-trivial mixing given by a symmetric unitary matrix $V^0_{PMNS} = V^T V$. $V$ depends …
We phenomenologically build a neutrino mass matrix obeying $μ-τ$ symmetry with only two parameters, Cabibbo angle $(λ)$ and a flavour twister parameter $(η)$. For vanishing $η$, the model assumes TBM mixing. When $η=λ$, the model generates a solar mixing angle and solar mass squared difference that coincide with the experimental best-fits. It motivates us to propose a mixing matrix in the neutrino sector with $ sinθ_{12}<\frac{1}{\sqrt{3}}$, $θ_{13}=0$ and $θ_{23}=π/4$. The corrections in $θ_{13}$ and $θ_{23}$ are conducted following the breaking of $μ-τ$ symmetry, by choosing a proper unitary…
In the preprint arXiv:2110.08210, some comments on our paper recently published in JHEP \textbf{09} (2021) 053 have been made. Since some of the comments are completely wrong and others are quite misleading, we decide to clarify the relevant issues in a formal reply. First of all, nothing is wrong about our calculations and physical results in the original paper. Second, there is no logical gap to fill at all. The fact that the $N$-dimensional unitary group over the field of complex numbers ${\rm U}(N,\mathbb{C})$ is not a linear algebraic group is actually irrelevant for the validity of the M…
Recently in [JHEP 09 (2021) 053], Wang et al. discussed the polynomial ring formed by flavor invariants in the leptonic sector with massive Majorana neutrinos. They have explicitly constructed the finite generating sets of the polynomial rings for both two-generation scenario and three-generation scenario. However, Wang et al.'s claim of the finiteness of the generating sets of the polynomial rings and their calculation by the approach of Hilbert series with generalized Molien-Weyl formula are both based on their assertion that the unitary group ${\rm U}(n,\mathbb{C})$ is reductive, which is u…
A simple extension of the standard model is to introduce $n$ heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos and preserve its $\rm SU(2)^{}_L \times U(1)^{}_Y$ gauge symmetry. Diagonalizing the $(3+n) \times (3+n)$ neutrino mass matrix, we obtain an exact analytical expression for the effective mass matrix of $ν^{}_e$, $ν^{}_μ$ and $ν^{}_τ$. It turns out that the $3\times 3$ neutrino mixing matrix $V$, which appears in the leptonic charged-current weak interactions, must not be exactly unitary. The unitarity violation of $V$ is negligibly tiny, however, if the canonical seesaw mechanism works to reprodu…
The T2K experiment has provided the first hint for the best-fit value for the leptonic CP phase $δ_{CP} \sim -90^\circ$ from neutrino data. This is now corroborated by the NO$ν$A neutrino runs. We study the implications for neutrino mass hierarchy and octant of $θ_{23}$ in the context of this data assuming that the true value of $δ_{CP}$ in nature is $-90^\circ$. Based on simple arguments on degeneracies in the probabilities we show that a clear signal of $δ_{CP}=-90^\circ$ coming from T2K neutrino (antineutrino) data is only possible if the true hierarchy is normal and the true octant is high…
The presence of non-unitary neutrino mixing can affect the measurement of the three-neutrino leptonic Dirac CP phase and hamper efforts to probe CP violation due to degeneracies of the extra non-unitary CP phase with the standard CP phase. We study the effect of including non-unitarity on probing CP violation with the long-baseline experiments NO$ν$A, T2K and DUNE. We analyze the effect of non-unitary mixing at the level of oscillation probabilities associated with the relevant baselines, and present the CP violation sensitivity for the individual experiments and their combination. Our results…
Non-unitarity of the neutrino mixing matrix is expected in many scenarios with physics beyond the Standard Model. Motivated by the search for deviations from unitary, we study two neutrino counting observables: the neutrino-antineutrino gamma process and the invisible $Z$ boson decay into neutrinos. We report on new constraints for non-unitarity coming from the first of this observables. We study the potential constraints that future collider experiments will give from the invisible decay of the Z boson, that will be measured with improved precision.
If leptonic unitarity is violated by new physics at an energy scale much lower than the electroweak scale, which we call low-scale unitarity violation, it has different characteristic features from those expected in unitarity violation at high-energy scales. They include maintaining flavor universality and absence of zero-distance flavor transition. We present a framework for testing such unitarity violation at low energies by neutrino oscillation experiments. Starting from the unitary 3 active plus $N$ (arbitrary integer) sterile neutrino model we show that by restricting the active-sterile a…
A classification of leptonic currents with respect to C-operation requires the separation of elementary particles into the two classes of vector C-even and axial-vector C-odd character. Their nature has been created so that to each type of lepton corresponds a kind of neutrino. Such pairs are united in families of a different C-parity. Unlike the neutrino of a vector type, any C-noninvariant Dirac neutrino must have his Majorana neutrino. They constitute the purely neutrino families. We discuss the nature of a corresponding mechanism responsible for the availability in all types of axial-vecto…

Flavour oscillations of sub-GeV atmospheric neutrinos and antineutrinos, traversing different distances inside the Earth, are a promising source of information on the leptonic CP phase $δ$. In that energy range, the oscillations are very fast, far beyond the resolution of modern neutrino detectors. However, the necessary averaging over the experimentally typical energy and azimuthal angle bins does not wash out the CP violation effects. In this paper we derive very accurate analytic compact expressions for the averaged oscillations probabilities. Assuming spherically symmetric Earth, the avera…
The article reviews the conditions for lepton-flavor conservation in leptonic interactions. The conditions are similar to those developed in the quark sector. For neutrinos the mass eigenstates are unitary superpositions of flavor states which together with small mass differences produce neutrino oscillations. A new property for neutrinos is the fact that their masses are very small suppressing their couplings to neutral scalar fields. The results are demonstrated in several models.
Defining, in the framework of quantum field theory, their mass eigenstates through their matricial propagator, we show why the mixing matrices of non-degenerate coupled systems should not be parametrized as unitary. This is how, for leptonic binary systems, two-angles solutions with discrete values pi/4 [pi/2] and pi/2 [pi] (in addition to the trivial case 0 [pi]) arise when weak leptonic currents of mass eigenstates approximately satisfy the two properties of universality and vanishing of their non-diagonal neutral components. Charged weak currents are also discussed, which leads to a few rem…
One of the main goals of the Long Baseline Neutrino Observatory (LBNO) is to study the $L/E$ behaviour (spectral information) of the electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance probabilities, in order to determine the unknown CP-violation phase $δ_{CP}$ and discover CP-violation in the leptonic sector. The result is based on the measurement of the appearance probabilities in a broad range of energies, covering t he 1st and 2nd oscillation maxima, at a very long baseline of 2300 km. The sensitivity of the experiment can be maximised by optimising the energy spectra of the neutrino and anti-ne…
