Semileptonic Flavor Changing Neutral Current decays of charmed hadrons uniquely probe the up-sector of the Standard Model. Clean null test observables, such as CP-asymmetries, lepton-universality ratios, missing energy modes, lepton flavor violating modes and angular observables can be studied in a variety of charmed meson and baryon modes. An overview of null test opportunities with rare charm decays is presented and similarities and complementarities of different modes are worked out.
Rare $\vert Δc \vert=\vert Δu \vert=1$ processes uniquely probe flavor in the Standard Model and beyond from the up-type quark sector. Opportunities to search for BSM physics in charm arise from the severe GIM suppression which kills SM contributions to leptonic axial-vector contributions and suppresses CP violation. Semileptonic decays of charmed hadrons offer a variety of clean null test observables, featuring new physics effects which are even enhanced by resonance contributions. In particular, angular observables in three- and self-analyzing four-body baryon decays, such as $Λ_c\to p \ell^…
In contrast with $B^0-\bar B^0$, $B_s-\bar B_s$ mixing where the standard model (SM) contributions overwhelm that of new physics beyond standard model (BSM), a measured relatively large $D^0-\bar D^0$ mixing where the SM contribution is negligible, definitely implies the existence of new physics BSM. It is natural to consider that the rare decays of D meson might be more sensitive to new physics, and the rare decay $D^0\to μ^+μ^-$ could be an ideal area to search for new physics because it is a flavor changing process. In this work we look for a trace of new physics BSM in the leptonic decays …
We study (semi)leptonic rare charm decays and its opportunities in searches for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In particular, we analyse the impact of potential BSM physics in $c\to ull'$ transitions, notably branching ratios, angular observables, asymmetries and Lepton Flavour Violating (LFV) decays. Testable effects are worked out model-independently and within Leptoquark models supplemented with flavour patterns to link $K$/$B$ decays.
We discuss possibilities to test physics beyond the Standard Model in $\vertΔc\vert=\vertΔu\vert= 1$ semileptonic, hadronic and missing energy decay modes. Clean null test observables such as angular observables, CP-asymmetries and lepton universality tests are presented and model-independent correlations as well as details within flavorful, anomaly-free $Z^\prime$ models are worked out.
We present a new scheme for tagging high-$p_{T}$ bottom and charm jets using energetic muons. Contemporary track-based $b$ tags lose their ability to reject light jet background as jet $p_{T}\rightarrow\mathcal{O}(\mathrm{TeV})$, where the massive boost exposes fundamental limits in tracking resolution. For our "$μ_{x}$" tag, the signal efficiency and light jet rejection is robust versus $p_{T}$. In the tested regime (jet $p_{T}\in[\mathrm{0.5,2.1}]$ TeV), $μ_{x}$ tags $\sim14\%$ of $b$ jets, $\sim6.5\%$ of $c$ jets and $\sim0.65\%$ of light jets. Since $μ_{x}$ tagging should be immediately us…
Rare $|Δc|=|Δu|=1$ transitions into dineutrinos are strongly GIM-suppressed and constitute excellent null tests of the standard model. While branching ratios of $D \to P \,ν\bar ν$, $D \to P^+ P^- \, ν\bar ν$, $P=π, K$, baryonic $Λ_c^+ \to p \,ν\bar ν$, and $Ξ_c^+ \to Σ^+ \, ν\bar ν$ and inclusive $D \to X ν\bar ν$ decays are experimentally unconstrained, signals of new physics can be just around the corner. We provide model-independent upper limits on branching ratios reaching few $\times 10^{-5}$ in the most general case of arbitrary lepton flavor structure, $\sim 10^{-5}$ for scenarios with…
According to the Coleman-Glashow null theorem if all the symmetry breaking effects belong to the same regular representation (octet in the case of SU(3) and {\bf 15} in the case of SU(4)) and are generated in a tadpole type mechanism, the strangeness changing (charm changing) weak transitions generated through the S$_{6}$ (S$_{9}$) tadpole must vanish. Exploiting this null result, we find relations between the BBP coupling constants which allow us to write the coupling constants in terms of two parameters and baryon masses. Fixing these two parameters ( $g_{NNπ}$ and $g_{ΛΣπ}$) from experiment…
We analyze rare charm baryon decays within the standard model and beyond. We identify all null test observables in unpolarized $Λ_c \to p \ell^+ \ell^-$, $\ell=e, μ$ decays, and study the new physics sensitivities. We find that the longitudinal dilepton polarization fraction $F_L$ is sensitive to electromagnetic dipole couplings $C_{7}^{(\prime)}$, and to the right-handed 4-fermion vector coupling $C_{9}^\prime$. The forward-backward asymmetry, $A_{\rm FB}$, due to the GIM-suppression a standard model null test already, probes the left-handed axialvector 4-fermion coupling $C_{10}$; its CP-asy…
Rare charm decays offer the unique possibility to explore flavour-changing neutral-currents in the up-sector within the Standard Model and beyond. Due to the lack of effective methods to reliably describe its low energy dynamics, rare charm decays have been considered as less promising for long. However, this lack does not exclude the possibility to perform promising searches for New Physics per se, but a different philosophy of work is required. Exact or approximate symmetries of the Standard Model allow to construct clean null-test observables, yielding an excellent road to the discovery of …
We study the full angular distribution of semileptonic rare charm baryon decays in which the secondary baryon undergoes weak decay with sizable polarization parameter, $Ξ_c^+\toΣ^+\,(\to pπ^0)\ell^+\ell^-$, $Ξ_c^0\toΛ^0\,(\to p π^-)\ell^+\ell^-$ and $Ω_c^0\toΞ^0\,(\to Λ^{0} π^0)\ell^+\ell^-$. Such self-analyzing decay chains allow for seven additional observables compared to three-body decays such as $Λ_c \to p \ell^+ \ell^-$, with different sensitivities to the $|Δc|=|Δu|=1$ weak couplings. Opportunities to test the standard model in $c \to u$ transitions with standard model null tests and ot…
$|Δc|=|Δu|=1$ processes are unique probes of flavor physics in the up-sector within and beyond the Standard Model (SM). SM tests with rare semileptonic charm meson decays are based on an approximate CP--symmetry, a superior GIM--mechanism, angular distributions, lepton-universality and lepton flavor conservation. We analyze the complete set of null test observables in $D \to π\ell \ell^{(\prime)}$ and $D_s \to K \ell \ell^{(\prime)}$ decays, $\ell^{(\prime)}=e, μ$, and find large room for new physics safely above the SM contribution. We identify signatures of supersymmetry, leptoquarks and ano…
In this work, we study the impact of $b \to s \ell \ell$, $B_s - \bar{B_s}$ mixing and neutrino trident measurements on observables in decays induced by $c \to u $ transition in the context of a non-universal $Z'$ model which generates $C^{\rm NP}_{9} <0$ and $C^{\rm NP}_9 = - \,C^{\rm NP}_{10} $ new physics scenarios at the tree level. We inspect the effects on $D^0 \to π^0 ν\barν$, $D^+ \to π^+ ν\barν$ and $B_c \to B^+ ν\barν $ decays which are induced by the quark level transition $c \to u ν\barν$. The fact that the branching ratios of these decays are negligible in the standard model (SM) …
The unfortunate case where the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) fails to discover physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) is sometimes referred to as the "Nightmare scenario" of particle physics. We study the consequences of this hypothetical scenario for Dark Matter (DM), in the framework of the constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (cMSSM). We evaluate the surviving regions of the cMSSM parameter space after null searches at the LHC, using several different LHC configurations, and study the consequences for DM searches with ton-scale direct detectors and the IceCube neutrino telescope…
The Glashow-Iliopoulos-Maiani mechanism is extremely efficient to suppress the flavour-changing neutral current decays of charmed hadrons induced by the $c \to u$ transitions, making such processes particularly sensitive to phenomena beyond the Standard Model. In particular, $c \to u$ decays with a neutrino pair in the final state are theoretically appealing due to the small long-distance contributions. Moreover, in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), the $SU(2)_L$ invariance allows to relate the Wilson coefficients in the effective Hamiltonian governing the $c …
The potential of a Super Flavor Factory (SFF) for searches of New Physics is reviewed. While very high luminosity B physics is assumed to be at the core of the program, its scope for extensive charm and tau studies are also emphasized. The possibility to run at the Upsilon(5S) is also very briefly discussed; in principle, this could provide very clean measurements of B_s decays. The strength and reach of a SFF is most notably due to the possibility of examining an impressive array of very clean observables. The angles and the sides of the unitarity triangle can be determined with unprecedented…
The photon polarization in $D_{(s)} \to K_1 (\to Kππ) γ$ decays can be extracted from an up-down asymmetry in the $K ππ$ system, along the lines of the method known to $B \to K_1 (\to Kππ) γ$ decays. Charm physics is advantageous as partner decays exist: $D^+ \to K_1^+ (\to Kππ) γ$, which is standard model-like, and $D_s \to K_1^+ (\to Kππ) γ$, which is sensitive to physics beyond the standard model in $|Δc| =|Δu|=1$ transitions. The standard model predicts their photon polarizations to be equal up to U-spin breaking corrections, while new physics in the dipole operators can split them apart a…
Major new experimental efforts on detecting CP violation in $B$ decays will very soon go on the air. Recent developments suggest that final state interaction phases in exclusive decays of $B$ are unlikely to be small indicating the possibility of observable direct CP asymmetries in these channels. CLEO results on charmless hadronic modes suggest penguin amplitudes are rather big implying that the extraction of $α$ from $B^0$-$\bar B^0$ alone will be difficult, thus necessitating also information from direct CP\null. Importance of $B(B_s)$ decays to two vectors for model independent tests of el…
