Rare charm decays offer the unique possibility to explore flavour-changing neutral-currents in the up-sector within the Standard Model and beyond. Due to the lack of effective methods to reliably describe its low energy dynamics, rare charm decays have been considered as less promising for long. However, this lack does not exclude the possibility to perform promising searches for New Physics per se, but a different philosophy of work is required. Exact or approximate symmetries of the Standard Model allow to construct clean null-test observables, yielding an excellent road to the discovery of New Physics, complementing the existing studies in the down-sector. In this review, we summarize the theoretical and experimental status of rare charm $|Δc|=|Δu|=1$ transitions, as well as opportunities for current and future experiments such as LHCb, Belle II, BES III, the FCC-ee and proposed tau-charm factories. We also use the most recent experimental results to report updated limits on lepton-flavour conserving and lepton-flavour violating Wilson coefficients.
Although the Standard Model has been firmly established, the search for physics beyond the SM is ongoing by investigating new experimental probes. Rare charm decays are a unique tool to access New Physics studies. The high luminosity achieved by the modern experiments and their high precision allow for rare charm decay studies in different scenarios. In this work, some of the most recent experimental results will be discussed in detail.
Rare FCNC decay modes of charmed mesons are reviewed. The standard model predictions, including both short and long distance contributions, are summarized. Several new physics options that can give detectable signals are described.
Recent experimental bounds on rare charm decays offer a chance to improve our theoretical understanding of physics present in $c \to u γ$ and $c \to u l^+ l^-$ transitions. Standard Model and New Physics contributions are reviewed for inclusive and exclusive $D \to Vγ$, $D^+ \to π^+ l^+ l^-$, $D \to l^+ l^-$ decays. Observables important for search of New Physics are discussed. Possibility to observe CP violation in rare charm decays is questioned.
We study the effects of models with a warped extra dimension on rare charm decays. While the new degrees of freedom in these models are bounded above a few TeV, they can leave signatures in rare charm decays with their tiny Standard Model background. We look at several channels with leptons in the final state along with several asymmetries of both kinematical and dynamical nature. CPT invariance is `usable' for analyzing the impacts of new dynamics in $D$ meson decays and in particular, rare decays of charm mesons.
Indirect searches, and in particular rare decays, have proven to be a fruitful field to search for New Physics beyond the Standard Model. While the down-quark sector (B and K) have been studied in detail, less attention was devoted to charm decays due to the smaller expected values and higher theoretical uncertainties of their observables. Recently a renewed interest is growing in rare charm searches. In this article we review the current experimental status of searches for rare decays in charmed hadrons. While the Standard Model rates are yet to be reached, current experimental limits are alr…
High-precision flavor physics measurements play a complementary role to the direct searches for new physics by CMS and ATLAS experiments at LHC. Such measurements will be performed with the Belle II detector at the upgraded KEKB accelerator (SuperKEKB) in Japan. The physics potential with emphasis on the charm sector, current status and future prospects of the Belle II experiment are presented in these proceedings.
Semileptonic Flavor Changing Neutral Current decays of charmed hadrons uniquely probe the up-sector of the Standard Model. Clean null test observables, such as CP-asymmetries, lepton-universality ratios, missing energy modes, lepton flavor violating modes and angular observables can be studied in a variety of charmed meson and baryon modes. An overview of null test opportunities with rare charm decays is presented and similarities and complementarities of different modes are worked out.
Recently, LHCb experiment announced a 3.5$σ$ evidence for direct CP violation in $D^0$ decay by looking at the difference between $A_{CP}(D^0\rightarrow K^+K^-)$ and $A_{CP}(D^0\rightarrow π^+π^-)$. This is the first evidence of CP violation in charm system, which may indicate new physics beyond the Standard Model. Motivated by this measurement, we review rare processes in charmonium decay, especially, the weak decay, $C$ or $P$ violated decay and lepton flavor violated decays. In case the new physics appears in charm sector, these rare decays of charmonium states will provide opportunity to s…
Abundance of charm data in the current and future low energy flavor experiments makes it possible to study rare decays of D-mesons with ever increased precision. I discuss theoretical implications of derived constraints on New Physics models from these transitions. I argue that those constraints could be competitive with results of direct searches for New Physics particles (including Dark Matter) at the Large Hadron Collider.
We review the current status of flavor-changing neutral currents in the charm sector. We focus on the standard-model predictions and identify the main sources of theoretical uncertainties in both charm mixing and rare charm decays. The potential of these observables for constraining short-distance physics in the standard model and its extensions is compromised by the presence of large nonperturbative effects. We examine the possible discovery windows in which short-distance physics can be tested and study the effects of various extensions of the standard model. The current experimental situati…
Studies of rare decays of charmed mesons into the final states containing leptons is an important vehicle in low-energy searches for new physics. I review theoretical implications of those studies involving transitions with and without lepton flavor conservation. I argue that lepton-flavor violation (LFV) could be successfully studied in heavy quarkonium transitions yielding more sensitive results than similar searches involving $D$ mesons.
Following the experimental results from LHCb on the rare decay $B^+_c \to K^-K^+π^+$, we investigate the possibility where this process is dominated by a double charm rescattering. The $B_c$ decay to double charm channels have a weak topology that is favoured in comparison with the direct production of $K^-K^+π^+$ in the final state, suppressed by quark annihilation. The decay amplitude for $B^+_c \to K^-K^+π^+$ with $B_c$ decaying first to double charm channels is described by a charm penguin diagram, represented by charm hadronic triangle loops, which reach the final state of interest after …
Rare flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) decays of top, beauty and charm quarks can provide a powerful probe for as yet unobserved particles. Recent results on FCNC $b \to s$, $c \to u$ and $t$ transitions from the LHC experiments are reviewed. Particular attention is paid to the angular distribution of the $B^{0} \to K^{*0} μ^{+} μ^{-}$ decay, where a measurement performed by LHCb shows a local discrepancy of 3.7 standard deviations with respect to the SM prediction. Using the decay $B^{+} \to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}γ$, LHCb have also been able to demonstrate the polarisation of photons produced …
This review discusses the present experimental and theoretical status of rare flavour-changing neutral current $b$-quark decays at the begin of 2018. It includes a discussion of the experimental situation and details of the currently observed anomalies in measurements of flavour observables, including lepton flavour universality. Progress on the theory side, within and beyond the Standard Model theory is also discussed, together with potential New Physics interpretations of the present measurements.
The non-$D \bar D$ decays of the $\ppp = ψ(3770)$ resonance are reviewed and possibilities for further measurements are noted. These decays can shed light on S--D mixing, the ``missing'' $ψ' = ψ(3686)$ decays, a possible discrepancy between the total and $D \bar D$ cross sections at the $\ppp$, and rescattering effects contributing to enhanced $b \to s$ penguin amplitudes in $B$ meson decays.
We examine the status of charmonia like states by looking into the behaviour of the energy level differences and regularity in the behaviour of the leptonic decay widths of the excited charmonia states. The spectroscopic states are studied using a phenomenological Martin-like confinement potential and their radial wave functions are employed to compute the di-leptonic decay widths. Their deviations from the expected behaviour provide a clue to consider them as admixtures of the nearby S and D states. The present analysis strongly favour \$$\backslash$psi \$ (3686) as admixture of $c \bar{c}$ (…
We review recent experimental results on B meson decays. These include measurements of the inclusive production of charmed and non-charmed mesons and baryons, the reconstruction of a large number of exclusive hadronic final states with charmed mesons, the search for exclusive hadronic final states without charmed mesons, and the first observation of the decay B-> K* gamma which is described by an electromagnetic penguin diagram. The theoretical implications of these results will be considered. The figures can be obtained in postscript format EMAIL from kh@ohstpy.mps.ohio-state.edu.
We review results on rare and forbidden decays of D^0, D^+, and D^+_s mesons from experiments at FNAL. The decay modes studied have two leptons in the final state and, if observed, would constitute evidence for flavor-changing neutral-current, lepton-flavor-violating, or lepton-number-violating processes. To date, no evidence for these decays has been observed and upper limits are obtained for their branching fractions. These limits can constrain various extensions to the Standard Model. We present new upper limits from FNAL E791 on the branching fractions for more than two dozen three- and fo…
I give an overview of the current status of the theory of charmonium production in hard-scattering processes and summarize the present state of comparisons between theory and experiment.
Rare $\vert Δc \vert=\vert Δu \vert=1$ processes uniquely probe flavor in the Standard Model and beyond from the up-type quark sector. Opportunities to search for BSM physics in charm arise from the severe GIM suppression which kills SM contributions to leptonic axial-vector contributions and suppresses CP violation. Semileptonic decays of charmed hadrons offer a variety of clean null test observables, featuring new physics effects which are even enhanced by resonance contributions. In particular, angular observables in three- and self-analyzing four-body baryon decays, such as $Λ_c\to p \ell^…
The $J/ψp$ signals at 4380 MeV and 4450 MeV which were seen by the LHCb collaboration in the decay $Λ^0_b\to K^-J/ψp$ are discussed following the hypothesis of the existence of diquark-diquark-antiquark composite states. The discussed problems concern: (i) estimation of masses and mass splittings for low-lying states, (ii) determination of decay modes in the quark recombination scheme, (iii) unitarity and analyticity constrains for pentaquark propagators, (iv) hadronic deuteron-like components in the diquark-diquark-antiquark multiplet.
We perform a comprehensive study of a number of rare charm decays, incorporating the first evaluation of the QCD corrections to the short distance contributions, as well as examining the long range effects. For processes mediated by the $c\to u\ell^+\ell^-$ transitions, we show that sensitivity to short distance physics exists in kinematic regions away from the vector meson resonances that dominate the total rate. In particular, we find that $D\toπ\ell^+\ell^-$ and $D\toρ\ell^+\ell^-$ are sensitive to non-universal soft-breaking effects in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with R-parit…
The following is an overview of the current status of charmless semileptonic B decays and the extraction of the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ by the Belle and BaBaR collaborations.
The possibility of using the charm system to search for new physics is addressed. Phenomena such as $D^0-\bar D^0$ mixing and rare decays of charmed mesons are first examined in the Standard Model to test our present understanding and to serve as benchmarks for signals from new sources. The effects of new physics from various classes of non-standard dynamical models on $D^0-\bar D^0$ mixing are investigated.
We analyze patterns from CP-violating new physics (NP) in hadronic and semileptonic rare charm $\vert Δc \vert=\vert Δu\vert=1$ transitions. Observation of direct CP-violation in hadronic decays, as in $ΔA_{\text{CP}}$, provides opportunities for $c \to u \,\ell^+ \ell^-$, $\ell=e,μ$ transitions, and vice versa. For the concrete case of flavorful, anomaly-free $Z^\prime$-models a NP-interpretation of $ΔA_{\text{CP}}$ suggests measurable CP-asymmetries in semileptonic decays such as $D \to π\, \ell^+ \ell^-$ or $D \to ππ\, \ell^+ \ell^-$. Conversely, an observation of CP-violation in $c \to u\,…
Rare B decays allow to investigate fundamental interactions regarding their flavor, chiral, Dirac and CP properties. In anticipation of the large data samples of exclusive B decays into muons from the forthcoming LHC experiments, in particular LHCb, as well as possible super flavor factories, we review the theoretical status and outline future opportunities to explore the borders of the Standard Model and beyond.
An analysis of charm mesons decaying semileptonically via Flavor Changing Neutral Currents is presented. We calculate the Wilson coefficients within the Standard Model. A window in the decay distribution, where physics beyond the Standard Model could be measured is identified. Exemplary, we study effects of leptoquark models.
This paper is a written version of a talk on rare (FCNC) D meson decays as presented at the Electroweak Moriond 2002. The presentation proceeds in two parts. We first consider Standard Model predictions, taking into account both short-distance and long distance effects. Then several New Physics options (e.g. supersymmatry, strong dynamics, extra large dimenions, etc) are considered.
I review possible resolution of the $J/ψ(ψ^{\prime}) \to ρ-π$ puzzle based on two inputs: the relative phase between the one- photon and the gluonic decay amplitudes, and a possible hadronic excess in the inclusive nonelectromagnetic decay rate of $ψ^{\prime}$. The status of a universal large phase here is examined for its meaning and implications (including those for B-physics). Since the future of tau/charm facility(s) are again under consideration together with a future anti-proton facility at GSI, I propose to extend my review to include a broader discussion of charmonium physics. Outstand…
We study (semi)leptonic rare charm decays and its opportunities in searches for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In particular, we analyse the impact of potential BSM physics in $c\to ull'$ transitions, notably branching ratios, angular observables, asymmetries and Lepton Flavour Violating (LFV) decays. Testable effects are worked out model-independently and within Leptoquark models supplemented with flavour patterns to link $K$/$B$ decays.
Rare $B$-decays induced by flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNC) is one of the promising candidates for probing physics beyond the Standard model. However, for identifying potential new physics from the data, reliable control over QCD contributions is necessary. We focus on one of such QCD contributions - the charming loops - that potentially can lead to difficulties in disentangling new physics effects from the observables and discuss the possibility to gain control over theoretical predictions for charming loops.
Motivated by the recent measurement of $D^0\toρ^0γ$ improved standard model (SM) predictions for branching ratios and CP asymmetries of radiative charm decay are given. Weak annihilation induced decays are probes of non-perturbative QCD approaches. Rare decays probe the SM and physics beyond the SM, e.g. leptoquark and supersymmetric models. Opportunities with $Λ_c\to pγ$ for future polarization measurements are presented.
I review the theoretical and phenomenological status of two- and three-body charmless non-leptonic B decays, with an emphasis on factorization approaches. Most of the material presented here is based on talks given by the participants of the workshop "Future Challenges in Non-Leptonic B Decays: Theory and Experiment", held at Bad Honnef in February 2016.
Recent disagreement between experimental measurments of CP violating asymmetry in D -> K+ K- and D ->pi+ pi- and theoretical Standard model expectation motivated many studies within the Standard model and beyond. Rare charm decays offer new probe of possible signals beyond Standard model. CP conserving and CP violating contributions within the Standard model and beyond are reviewed for inclusive c -> u gamma and c ->u l+ l- and exclusive D ->V gamma, D ->P+ P-, D+ -> pi+ l+ l-, D -> l+ l- decays.
We study the full angular distribution of semileptonic rare charm baryon decays in which the secondary baryon undergoes weak decay with sizable polarization parameter, $Ξ_c^+\toΣ^+\,(\to pπ^0)\ell^+\ell^-$, $Ξ_c^0\toΛ^0\,(\to p π^-)\ell^+\ell^-$ and $Ω_c^0\toΞ^0\,(\to Λ^{0} π^0)\ell^+\ell^-$. Such self-analyzing decay chains allow for seven additional observables compared to three-body decays such as $Λ_c \to p \ell^+ \ell^-$, with different sensitivities to the $|Δc|=|Δu|=1$ weak couplings. Opportunities to test the standard model in $c \to u$ transitions with standard model null tests and ot…
We give a status report on inclusive rare B decays, highlighting recent developments and open problems. We focus on the decay modes $B \to X_{s,d} γ$, $ B \to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ and $B \to X_s ν\bar ν$ and on their role in the search for new physics. Most of the inclusive rare B decays are important modes of flavour physics due to the small hadronic uncertainties. They can be regarded as laboratories to search for new physics. We collect the experimental data already available from CLEO and the $B$ factories BABAR and BELLE. We review the NLL and NNLL QCD calculations of the inclusive decay rat…
Status of nonfactorizable effects in hadronic charmless B decays is reviewed. Implications of new CLEO measurements on $B^0\toπ^+π^-$ and $B\toη' K$ are discussed. Nonfactorizable effects due to color ocet 4-quark operators are calculated using renormalization group improved QCD sum rules. The resultant B-meson lifetime ratio $τ(B^-)/τ(B_d)$ agrees with experiment.
I review recent developments in rare and radiative kaon decays from the theory side, with emphasis on those modes that are actively analyzed by the experimental collaborations.
The LHCb bounds on the branching ratio of rare decay $D^0 \to μ^+ μ^-$ and the constraints on the branching ratio of $D^+ \to π^+ μ^+ μ^-$ in the nonresonant regions enable us to improve constraints on new physics contributions. Using the effective Lagrangian approach we determine sizes of the Wilson coefficients allowed by the existing LHCb bounds on rare charm decays. Then we discuss contributions to rare charm meson decay observables in several models of new physics: a model with an additional spin-1 weak triplet, leptoquark models, Two Higgs doublets model of type III, and a $Z'$ model. He…
We analyze rare charm baryon decays within the standard model and beyond. We identify all null test observables in unpolarized $Λ_c \to p \ell^+ \ell^-$, $\ell=e, μ$ decays, and study the new physics sensitivities. We find that the longitudinal dilepton polarization fraction $F_L$ is sensitive to electromagnetic dipole couplings $C_{7}^{(\prime)}$, and to the right-handed 4-fermion vector coupling $C_{9}^\prime$. The forward-backward asymmetry, $A_{\rm FB}$, due to the GIM-suppression a standard model null test already, probes the left-handed axialvector 4-fermion coupling $C_{10}$; its CP-asy…
We present the theoretical status of the lifetimes of weakly decaying heavy hadrons containing a bottom or a charm quark, and discuss the current predictions, based on the framework of the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE), for both mesons and baryons. Potential improvements to reduce the theoretical uncertainties are also highlighted.
We present standard model (SM) estimates for exclusive $c \to u γ$ processes in heavy quark and hybrid frameworks. Measured branching ratios ${\cal{B}}(D^0 \to (ϕ, \bar K^{*0}) γ)$ are at or somewhat exceeding the upper range of the SM and suggest slow convergence of the $1/m_D, α_s$-expansion. Model-independent constraints on $|ΔC|=|ΔU|=1$ dipole operators from ${\cal{B}}(D^0 \to ρ^0 γ)$ data are obtained. Predictions and implications for leptoquark models are worked out. While branching ratios are SM-like CP asymmetries $\lesssim 10 \%$ can be induced. In SUSY deviations from the SM can be e…
Properties of quarkonia - like states in the charm and bottom sector have been studied in the frame work of relativistic Dirac formalism with a linear confinement potential. We have computed the mass spectroscopy and decay properties (vector decay constant and leptonic decay width) of several quarkonia - like states. Present study is also intended to identify some of the unexplained states as mixed P-wave and mixed S-D wave states of Charmonia and Bottomonia. The results indicate that the X(4140) state can be an admixture of two P states of charmonium. And the charmonium like states X(4630) an…
Experimental sensitivity to CP violation in charm decay is beginning to approach the interesting regime ($\sim10^{-3}$) in which new physics may be manifest. In the early years of the 21st century, if the technical challenges can be met, the proposed BTeV experiment should have the best sensitivity for rare effects both in charm and in beauty.
This work summarizes the current status of the measured semileptonic branching fractions $B^{0,+} \to X_c μν$. The sum of exclusive measurements is compared with the inclusive determination, accounting for isospin extrapolation. Further derived quantities are computed, taking into account different explanations for the unmeasured components of the total branching fraction. These quantities focus on the charge breakdown of the final states, and are designed for use as inputs or comparisons in future experimental measurements.
This talk summarizes the status of the charmonium system, with particular emphasis on outstanding problems in QCD spectroscopy which a tau-charm factory can address.
We study constraints on the CP violating phase $γ$ in the Kobayashi-Maskawa model using available experimental data. We first follow the conventional method to up date the constraint on $γ$ by performing a $χ^2$ analysis using data from $|ε_K|$, $Δm_{B_{d,s}}$ and $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$. We also include the recent information on $\sin2β$ in the analysis. We obtain the best fit for $γ$ to be $66^\circ$ and the 95% C.L. allowed range to be $42^\circ \sim 87^\circ$. We then develop a method to carry out a $χ^2$ analysis based on SU(3) symmetry using data from $B\to ππ$ and $B\to K π$. We also discuss …
Leptonic and semileptonic decays in the charm sector have been well studied in recent years. With the largest data sample near $D\bar D$ threshold, precision measurements of leptonic and semileptonic decays of charm meson and baryon are perfromed at BESIII. Test for letpon flavor universality is also performed. Sensitivity for rare leptonic and semileptonic charm decays is significantly improved taking advantage of the huge statistics in LHCb and the $B$ factories.
