Abundance of charm data in the current and future low energy flavor experiments makes it possible to study rare decays of D-mesons with ever increased precision. I discuss theoretical implications of derived constraints on New Physics models from these transitions. I argue that those constraints could be competitive with results of direct searches for New Physics particles (including Dark Matter) at the Large Hadron Collider.
Although the Standard Model has been firmly established, the search for physics beyond the SM is ongoing by investigating new experimental probes. Rare charm decays are a unique tool to access New Physics studies. The high luminosity achieved by the modern experiments and their high precision allow for rare charm decay studies in different scenarios. In this work, some of the most recent experimental results will be discussed in detail.
Rare FCNC decay modes of charmed mesons are reviewed. The standard model predictions, including both short and long distance contributions, are summarized. Several new physics options that can give detectable signals are described.
Recent experimental bounds on rare charm decays offer a chance to improve our theoretical understanding of physics present in $c \to u γ$ and $c \to u l^+ l^-$ transitions. Standard Model and New Physics contributions are reviewed for inclusive and exclusive $D \to Vγ$, $D^+ \to π^+ l^+ l^-$, $D \to l^+ l^-$ decays. Observables important for search of New Physics are discussed. Possibility to observe CP violation in rare charm decays is questioned.
We study the effects of models with a warped extra dimension on rare charm decays. While the new degrees of freedom in these models are bounded above a few TeV, they can leave signatures in rare charm decays with their tiny Standard Model background. We look at several channels with leptons in the final state along with several asymmetries of both kinematical and dynamical nature. CPT invariance is `usable' for analyzing the impacts of new dynamics in $D$ meson decays and in particular, rare decays of charm mesons.
Indirect searches, and in particular rare decays, have proven to be a fruitful field to search for New Physics beyond the Standard Model. While the down-quark sector (B and K) have been studied in detail, less attention was devoted to charm decays due to the smaller expected values and higher theoretical uncertainties of their observables. Recently a renewed interest is growing in rare charm searches. In this article we review the current experimental status of searches for rare decays in charmed hadrons. While the Standard Model rates are yet to be reached, current experimental limits are alr…
Semileptonic Flavor Changing Neutral Current decays of charmed hadrons uniquely probe the up-sector of the Standard Model. Clean null test observables, such as CP-asymmetries, lepton-universality ratios, missing energy modes, lepton flavor violating modes and angular observables can be studied in a variety of charmed meson and baryon modes. An overview of null test opportunities with rare charm decays is presented and similarities and complementarities of different modes are worked out.
Recently, LHCb experiment announced a 3.5$σ$ evidence for direct CP violation in $D^0$ decay by looking at the difference between $A_{CP}(D^0\rightarrow K^+K^-)$ and $A_{CP}(D^0\rightarrow π^+π^-)$. This is the first evidence of CP violation in charm system, which may indicate new physics beyond the Standard Model. Motivated by this measurement, we review rare processes in charmonium decay, especially, the weak decay, $C$ or $P$ violated decay and lepton flavor violated decays. In case the new physics appears in charm sector, these rare decays of charmonium states will provide opportunity to s…
We review the current status of flavor-changing neutral currents in the charm sector. We focus on the standard-model predictions and identify the main sources of theoretical uncertainties in both charm mixing and rare charm decays. The potential of these observables for constraining short-distance physics in the standard model and its extensions is compromised by the presence of large nonperturbative effects. We examine the possible discovery windows in which short-distance physics can be tested and study the effects of various extensions of the standard model. The current experimental situati…
Studies of rare decays of charmed mesons into the final states containing leptons is an important vehicle in low-energy searches for new physics. I review theoretical implications of those studies involving transitions with and without lepton flavor conservation. I argue that lepton-flavor violation (LFV) could be successfully studied in heavy quarkonium transitions yielding more sensitive results than similar searches involving $D$ mesons.
Rare charm decays offer the unique possibility to explore flavour-changing neutral-currents in the up-sector within the Standard Model and beyond. Due to the lack of effective methods to reliably describe its low energy dynamics, rare charm decays have been considered as less promising for long. However, this lack does not exclude the possibility to perform promising searches for New Physics per se, but a different philosophy of work is required. Exact or approximate symmetries of the Standard Model allow to construct clean null-test observables, yielding an excellent road to the discovery of …
Following the experimental results from LHCb on the rare decay $B^+_c \to K^-K^+π^+$, we investigate the possibility where this process is dominated by a double charm rescattering. The $B_c$ decay to double charm channels have a weak topology that is favoured in comparison with the direct production of $K^-K^+π^+$ in the final state, suppressed by quark annihilation. The decay amplitude for $B^+_c \to K^-K^+π^+$ with $B_c$ decaying first to double charm channels is described by a charm penguin diagram, represented by charm hadronic triangle loops, which reach the final state of interest after …
Rare flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) decays of top, beauty and charm quarks can provide a powerful probe for as yet unobserved particles. Recent results on FCNC $b \to s$, $c \to u$ and $t$ transitions from the LHC experiments are reviewed. Particular attention is paid to the angular distribution of the $B^{0} \to K^{*0} μ^{+} μ^{-}$ decay, where a measurement performed by LHCb shows a local discrepancy of 3.7 standard deviations with respect to the SM prediction. Using the decay $B^{+} \to K^{+}π^{-}π^{+}γ$, LHCb have also been able to demonstrate the polarisation of photons produced …
We review recent experimental results on B meson decays. These include measurements of the inclusive production of charmed and non-charmed mesons and baryons, the reconstruction of a large number of exclusive hadronic final states with charmed mesons, the search for exclusive hadronic final states without charmed mesons, and the first observation of the decay B-> K* gamma which is described by an electromagnetic penguin diagram. The theoretical implications of these results will be considered. The figures can be obtained in postscript format EMAIL from kh@ohstpy.mps.ohio-state.edu.
We review results on rare and forbidden decays of D^0, D^+, and D^+_s mesons from experiments at FNAL. The decay modes studied have two leptons in the final state and, if observed, would constitute evidence for flavor-changing neutral-current, lepton-flavor-violating, or lepton-number-violating processes. To date, no evidence for these decays has been observed and upper limits are obtained for their branching fractions. These limits can constrain various extensions to the Standard Model. We present new upper limits from FNAL E791 on the branching fractions for more than two dozen three- and fo…
Rare $\vert Δc \vert=\vert Δu \vert=1$ processes uniquely probe flavor in the Standard Model and beyond from the up-type quark sector. Opportunities to search for BSM physics in charm arise from the severe GIM suppression which kills SM contributions to leptonic axial-vector contributions and suppresses CP violation. Semileptonic decays of charmed hadrons offer a variety of clean null test observables, featuring new physics effects which are even enhanced by resonance contributions. In particular, angular observables in three- and self-analyzing four-body baryon decays, such as $Λ_c\to p \ell^…
We perform a comprehensive study of a number of rare charm decays, incorporating the first evaluation of the QCD corrections to the short distance contributions, as well as examining the long range effects. For processes mediated by the $c\to u\ell^+\ell^-$ transitions, we show that sensitivity to short distance physics exists in kinematic regions away from the vector meson resonances that dominate the total rate. In particular, we find that $D\toπ\ell^+\ell^-$ and $D\toρ\ell^+\ell^-$ are sensitive to non-universal soft-breaking effects in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with R-parit…
The possibility of using the charm system to search for new physics is addressed. Phenomena such as $D^0-\bar D^0$ mixing and rare decays of charmed mesons are first examined in the Standard Model to test our present understanding and to serve as benchmarks for signals from new sources. The effects of new physics from various classes of non-standard dynamical models on $D^0-\bar D^0$ mixing are investigated.
An analysis of charm mesons decaying semileptonically via Flavor Changing Neutral Currents is presented. We calculate the Wilson coefficients within the Standard Model. A window in the decay distribution, where physics beyond the Standard Model could be measured is identified. Exemplary, we study effects of leptoquark models.
We analyze patterns from CP-violating new physics (NP) in hadronic and semileptonic rare charm $\vert Δc \vert=\vert Δu\vert=1$ transitions. Observation of direct CP-violation in hadronic decays, as in $ΔA_{\text{CP}}$, provides opportunities for $c \to u \,\ell^+ \ell^-$, $\ell=e,μ$ transitions, and vice versa. For the concrete case of flavorful, anomaly-free $Z^\prime$-models a NP-interpretation of $ΔA_{\text{CP}}$ suggests measurable CP-asymmetries in semileptonic decays such as $D \to π\, \ell^+ \ell^-$ or $D \to ππ\, \ell^+ \ell^-$. Conversely, an observation of CP-violation in $c \to u\,…
This paper is a written version of a talk on rare (FCNC) D meson decays as presented at the Electroweak Moriond 2002. The presentation proceeds in two parts. We first consider Standard Model predictions, taking into account both short-distance and long distance effects. Then several New Physics options (e.g. supersymmatry, strong dynamics, extra large dimenions, etc) are considered.
We study (semi)leptonic rare charm decays and its opportunities in searches for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In particular, we analyse the impact of potential BSM physics in $c\to ull'$ transitions, notably branching ratios, angular observables, asymmetries and Lepton Flavour Violating (LFV) decays. Testable effects are worked out model-independently and within Leptoquark models supplemented with flavour patterns to link $K$/$B$ decays.
Rare $B$-decays induced by flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNC) is one of the promising candidates for probing physics beyond the Standard model. However, for identifying potential new physics from the data, reliable control over QCD contributions is necessary. We focus on one of such QCD contributions - the charming loops - that potentially can lead to difficulties in disentangling new physics effects from the observables and discuss the possibility to gain control over theoretical predictions for charming loops.
Motivated by the recent measurement of $D^0\toρ^0γ$ improved standard model (SM) predictions for branching ratios and CP asymmetries of radiative charm decay are given. Weak annihilation induced decays are probes of non-perturbative QCD approaches. Rare decays probe the SM and physics beyond the SM, e.g. leptoquark and supersymmetric models. Opportunities with $Λ_c\to pγ$ for future polarization measurements are presented.
Recent disagreement between experimental measurments of CP violating asymmetry in D -> K+ K- and D ->pi+ pi- and theoretical Standard model expectation motivated many studies within the Standard model and beyond. Rare charm decays offer new probe of possible signals beyond Standard model. CP conserving and CP violating contributions within the Standard model and beyond are reviewed for inclusive c -> u gamma and c ->u l+ l- and exclusive D ->V gamma, D ->P+ P-, D+ -> pi+ l+ l-, D -> l+ l- decays.
We study the full angular distribution of semileptonic rare charm baryon decays in which the secondary baryon undergoes weak decay with sizable polarization parameter, $Ξ_c^+\toΣ^+\,(\to pπ^0)\ell^+\ell^-$, $Ξ_c^0\toΛ^0\,(\to p π^-)\ell^+\ell^-$ and $Ω_c^0\toΞ^0\,(\to Λ^{0} π^0)\ell^+\ell^-$. Such self-analyzing decay chains allow for seven additional observables compared to three-body decays such as $Λ_c \to p \ell^+ \ell^-$, with different sensitivities to the $|Δc|=|Δu|=1$ weak couplings. Opportunities to test the standard model in $c \to u$ transitions with standard model null tests and ot…
The LHCb bounds on the branching ratio of rare decay $D^0 \to μ^+ μ^-$ and the constraints on the branching ratio of $D^+ \to π^+ μ^+ μ^-$ in the nonresonant regions enable us to improve constraints on new physics contributions. Using the effective Lagrangian approach we determine sizes of the Wilson coefficients allowed by the existing LHCb bounds on rare charm decays. Then we discuss contributions to rare charm meson decay observables in several models of new physics: a model with an additional spin-1 weak triplet, leptoquark models, Two Higgs doublets model of type III, and a $Z'$ model. He…
We analyze rare charm baryon decays within the standard model and beyond. We identify all null test observables in unpolarized $Λ_c \to p \ell^+ \ell^-$, $\ell=e, μ$ decays, and study the new physics sensitivities. We find that the longitudinal dilepton polarization fraction $F_L$ is sensitive to electromagnetic dipole couplings $C_{7}^{(\prime)}$, and to the right-handed 4-fermion vector coupling $C_{9}^\prime$. The forward-backward asymmetry, $A_{\rm FB}$, due to the GIM-suppression a standard model null test already, probes the left-handed axialvector 4-fermion coupling $C_{10}$; its CP-asy…
We present standard model (SM) estimates for exclusive $c \to u γ$ processes in heavy quark and hybrid frameworks. Measured branching ratios ${\cal{B}}(D^0 \to (ϕ, \bar K^{*0}) γ)$ are at or somewhat exceeding the upper range of the SM and suggest slow convergence of the $1/m_D, α_s$-expansion. Model-independent constraints on $|ΔC|=|ΔU|=1$ dipole operators from ${\cal{B}}(D^0 \to ρ^0 γ)$ data are obtained. Predictions and implications for leptoquark models are worked out. While branching ratios are SM-like CP asymmetries $\lesssim 10 \%$ can be induced. In SUSY deviations from the SM can be e…
The physics of tau and charm started in early 70's after J/$ψ$ and $τ$ were discovered. Since then several dedicated accelerators and experiments were built with increasing luminosities and studies on light hadron spectroscopy, charmonium, electroweak and QCD were never interupted. New interests and surprises are not rare in this area. With the newly built BEPCII/BESIII, an even brighter future is foreseen.
Experimental sensitivity to CP violation in charm decay is beginning to approach the interesting regime ($\sim10^{-3}$) in which new physics may be manifest. In the early years of the 21st century, if the technical challenges can be met, the proposed BTeV experiment should have the best sensitivity for rare effects both in charm and in beauty.
We study constraints on the CP violating phase $γ$ in the Kobayashi-Maskawa model using available experimental data. We first follow the conventional method to up date the constraint on $γ$ by performing a $χ^2$ analysis using data from $|ε_K|$, $Δm_{B_{d,s}}$ and $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$. We also include the recent information on $\sin2β$ in the analysis. We obtain the best fit for $γ$ to be $66^\circ$ and the 95% C.L. allowed range to be $42^\circ \sim 87^\circ$. We then develop a method to carry out a $χ^2$ analysis based on SU(3) symmetry using data from $B\to ππ$ and $B\to K π$. We also discuss …
We study the nine possible rare charm meson decays D->Pl^+l^- (P=pi,K,eta, eta') using the Heavy Meson Chiral Lagrangians and find them to be dominated by the long distance contributions. The decay D^+ -> pi^+l^+l^- with the branching ratio 1*10^(-6) is expected to have the best chances for an early experimental discovery. The short distance contribution in the five Cabibbo suppressed channels arises via the c->ul^+l^- transition; we find that this contribution is detectable only in the D->pi l^+l^- decay, where it dominates the differential spectrum at high-q^2. The general Minimal Supersymmet…
The importance of charm decays in the context of flavor is motivated. A theory overview on recent developments in leptonic and semileptonic decays, hadronic two-body decays, and rare decays is presented. Standard Model (SM) predictions as well as tests of the SM are pointed out, {\it e.g.}~how to discover direct CP violation in charm decays and how to search for physics beyond the SM. Differences between rare charm and beauty decays are discussed.
Leptonic and semileptonic decays in the charm sector have been well studied in recent years. With the largest data sample near $D\bar D$ threshold, precision measurements of leptonic and semileptonic decays of charm meson and baryon are perfromed at BESIII. Test for letpon flavor universality is also performed. Sensitivity for rare leptonic and semileptonic charm decays is significantly improved taking advantage of the huge statistics in LHCb and the $B$ factories.
Motivated by recent experimental results on charm physics we investigate implications of the updated constraints of new physics in rare charm meson decays. We first reconsider effects of the MSSM in $c\to u γ$ constrained by the recent experimental evidence on $Δm_D$ and find, that due to the dominance of long distance physics, $D \to V γ$ decay rates cannot be modified by MSSM contributions. Then we consider effects of the extra heavy up vector-like quark models on the decay spectrum of $D^+ \to π^+ l^+ l^-$ and $D_s^+ \to K^+ l^+ l^-$ decays. We find a possibility for the tiny increase of th…
We conduct a systematic study of the impact of new physics in quark-level $b \to c \bar{c} s$ transitions on $B$-physics, in particular rare $B$-decays and $B$-meson lifetime observables. We find viable scenarios where a sizable effect in rare semileptonic $B$-decays can be generated, compatible with experimental indications and with a possible dependence on the dilepton invariant mass, while being consistent with constraints from radiative $B$-decay and the measured $B_s$ width difference. We show how, if the effect is generated at the weak scale or beyond, strong renormalisation-group effect…
The current wealth of charmless B decay data may suggest the presence of final state rescattering. In a factorized amplitude approach, better fits are found by incorporating two SU(3) rescattering phase differences, giving delta ~ 65 degree and sigma ~ 90 - 100 degree. Fitting with unitarity phase phi_3 as a fit parameter gives phi_3 ~ 96 degree, the CP asymmetries A_{pi pi}, S_{pi pi} agree better with BaBar, and the sigma phase is slightly lower. Keeping phi_3 = 60 degree fixed in fit gives S_{pi pi} ~-0.9, which agrees better with Belle. With the sizable delta, sigma rescattering phases as …
Updated standard model predictions for $D_{(s)} \to P l^+ l^-$, $l=e,μ$, $P=π,K$ and inclusive decays are presented. Model-independent constraints on $|ΔC|=|ΔU|=1$ Wilson coefficients are worked out. New physics (NP) opportunities arise in semileptonic branching ratios for very large couplings only, however, are not excluded outside the resonance regions yet. The NP potential of resonance-assisted CP asymmetries and angular observables is worked out. Predictions are given for leptoquark models, and include lepton flavor violating and dineutrino decays. Whether NP can be seen depends on flavor …
Rare $|Δc|=|Δu|=1$ transitions into dineutrinos are strongly GIM-suppressed and constitute excellent null tests of the standard model. While branching ratios of $D \to P \,ν\bar ν$, $D \to P^+ P^- \, ν\bar ν$, $P=π, K$, baryonic $Λ_c^+ \to p \,ν\bar ν$, and $Ξ_c^+ \to Σ^+ \, ν\bar ν$ and inclusive $D \to X ν\bar ν$ decays are experimentally unconstrained, signals of new physics can be just around the corner. We provide model-independent upper limits on branching ratios reaching few $\times 10^{-5}$ in the most general case of arbitrary lepton flavor structure, $\sim 10^{-5}$ for scenarios with…
We consider effects of coloured scalar mediators in decays $c\to u \, {\it invisibles}$. In particular, in these processes, as invisibles, we consider massive right-handed fermions. The coloured scalar $\bar S_1\equiv (\bar 3, 1, -2/3)$, due to its coupling to weak singlets up-quarks and invisible right-handed fermions ($χ$), is particularly interesting. Then, we consider $\tilde R_2 \equiv (\bar 3, 2, 1/6)$, which as a weak doublet is a subject of severe low-energy constraints. The $χ$ mass is considered in the range $(m_K - m_π)/2\leq m_χ\leq (m_D - m_π)/2$. We determine branching ratios for…
LHCb is a dedicated heavy flavour physics precision experiment at the LHC searching for New Physics (NP) beyond the Standard Model (SM) through the study of very rare decays of beauty and charm-flavoured hadrons and precision measurements of CP-violating observables. In this review I will present a selection of recent precision measurements of CP-violating observables in the decays of beauty and charm-flavoured hadrons. These measurements are based on an integrated luminosity of up to $1.0 \rm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by LHCb in 2011.
We explore the sensitivity of the flavour changing neutral currents among c and u quarks in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. The standard model rate for c->u gamma can be enhanced by up to two orders of magnitudes in general MSSM, while the c->ul^+l^- rate can be enhanced by at most a factor of three. The most suitable hadronic observable to probe the c->u gamma transition is the decay B_c->B_u^* gamma or the difference in decay rates of D^0->rho^0 gamma and D^0->omega gamma, since they are relatively free of the long distance contributions. The c ->ul^+l^- transition …
We study weak radiative $|Δc|=|Δu|=1$ decays of the charmed anti-triplett ($Λ_c$, $Ξ_c^{+}$, $Ξ_c^{0}$) and sextet ($Σ_c^{++}$, $Σ_c^+$, $Σ_c^0$, $Ξ_c^{\prime +}$, $Ξ_c^{\prime 0}$, $Ω_c$) baryons in the standard model (SM) and beyond. We work out $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)_F$-symmetry relations. We propose to study self-analyzing decay chains such as $Ξ_c^+ \to Σ^+ (\to p π^0) γ$ and $Ξ_c^0 \to Λ(\to p π^-) γ$, which enable new physics sensitive polarization studies. SM contributions can be controlled by corresponding analysis of the Cabibbo-favored decays $Λ_c^+ \to Σ^+ (\to p π^0) γ$ and $Ξ_c^0 \to…
Recent developments in charm physics within the standard model and beyond are reviewed. The precision study of leptonic charm meson decays accompanied with the constraints coming from K, B and tau physics enables to determine constraints on models of new physics. The standard model contributions in the D0 - D0bar system are still under investigation including operators of higher dimensions. New physics models such as the Littlest Higgs model or warped extra-dimensional models might modify the amount of CP violation, although CP violating asymmetries are still predicted to be at most of the ord…
We discuss the theory prediction of epsilon_K and the rare K -> pi nu nu-bar decays and review the structure and current status of higher-order contributions to these flavour changing processes in the standard model in some detail. This includes the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD calculation to the charm quark contribution to K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar and to the charm-top quark contribution to epsilon_K. Electroweak corrections to the rare kaon decays are also discussed.
In this work, we study the impact of $b \to s \ell \ell$, $B_s - \bar{B_s}$ mixing and neutrino trident measurements on observables in decays induced by $c \to u $ transition in the context of a non-universal $Z'$ model which generates $C^{\rm NP}_{9} <0$ and $C^{\rm NP}_9 = - \,C^{\rm NP}_{10} $ new physics scenarios at the tree level. We inspect the effects on $D^0 \to π^0 ν\barν$, $D^+ \to π^+ ν\barν$ and $B_c \to B^+ ν\barν $ decays which are induced by the quark level transition $c \to u ν\barν$. The fact that the branching ratios of these decays are negligible in the standard model (SM) …
We calculate the charm quark contribution to the rare decay K+ -> pi+ nu anti-nu in the next-to-next-to-leading order of QCD. This new contribution reduces the theoretical uncertainty in the relevant parameter Pc from +/- 10.1% down to +/- 2.4%, corresponding to scale uncertainties of +/- 1.3%, +/- 1.0%, +/- 0.006 and +/- 1.2 degrees in BR(K+ -> pi+ nu anti-nu) and in |V_td|, sin(2 beta) and gamma extracted from the K -> pi nu anti-nu system. The error in Pc = 0.37 +/- 0.04 is now fully dominated by the current uncertainty of +/- 3.8% in the charm quark mass mc. We find BR(K+ -> pi+ nu anti-nu…
We study rare decays of Charm in NSIs. We calculate the NSIs Branching ratios of these decays. There is a strong dependence of these on new physics parameter. They provide, stringent constraints on free parameter in tau.
Rare two-body decays of the top quark into a neutral bottom-quark meson plus an up- or charm-quark: $t\to {\overline B}^0+ u, c$; $t\to {\overline B}^0_{s}+ c,u$; and $t \to Υ(nS)+ c,u$, are studied for the first time. The corresponding partials widths are computed at leading order in the non-relativistic QCD framework. The sums of all two-body branching ratios amount to $\mathcal{B}(t \to {\overline B}^0+ {\rm jet}) \approx \mathcal{B}(t \to {\overline B}^0_{s}+ {\rm jet}) \approx 4.2\cdot 10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}(t \to Υ(nS)+ {\rm jet}) \approx 2\cdot 10^{-9}$, respectively. The feasibility…
