We study the construction of the so-called intrinsic action for PDEs equipped with compatible presymplectic structures. In particular, we explicitly demonstrate that the intrinsic action for the standard Einstein-Hilbert gravity is the familiar first-order Palatini action. Our main focus in this work is the massive spin-2 field, where the natural presymplectic structure is not complete in the sense that the associated intrinsic action does not reproduce all the equations of motion. We explicitly relate this feature to the differential consequences of the zeroth order in the genuine Lagrangian formulation of Fierz and Pauli. Moreover, a minimal multisymplectic extension of the intrinsic action that produces all the equations of motion is constructed and it is argued that systems of this type can be naturally regarded as multidimensional analogs of mechanical systems with constraints. Finally, we extend the considerations to the massive spin-3 field and argue that the extension to all the massive higher spins should be straightforward as well.
It is well-known that a Lagrangian induces a compatible presymplectic form on the equation manifold (stationary surface, understood as a submanifold of the respective jet-space). Given an equation manifold and a compatible presymplectic form therein, we define the first-order Lagrangian system which is formulated in terms of the intrinsic geometry of the equation manifold. It has a structure of a presymplectic AKSZ sigma model for which the equation manifold, equipped with the presymplectic form and the horizontal differential, serves as the target space. For a wide class of systems (but not a…
In general, the system of $2$nd-order partial differential equations made of the Euler-Lagrange equations of classical field theories are not compatible for singular Lagrangians. This is the so-called second-order problem. The first aim of this work is to develop a fully geometric constraint algorithm which allows us to find a submanifold where the Euler-Lagrange equations have solution, and split the constraints into two kinds depending on their origin. We do so using $k$-symplectic geometry, which is the simplest intrinsic description of classical field theories. As a second aim, the Einstei…
Any local gauge theory can be represented as an AKSZ sigma model (upon parameterization if necessary). However, for non-topological models in dimension higher than 1 the target space is necessarily infinite-dimensional. The interesting alternative known for some time is to allow for degenerate presymplectic structure in the target space. This leads to a very concise AKSZ-like representation for frame-like Lagrangians of gauge systems. In this work we concentrate on Einstein gravity and show that not only the Lagrangian but also the full-scale Batalin--Vilkovisky formulation is naturally encode…
A natural presymplectic structure for non-Lagrangian equations of motion governing the dynamics of free higher-spin fields in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter space is proposed. This presymplectic structure is then used to the derivation of the conserved currents associated with the relativistic invariance and to the construction of local functionals of fields that are gauge invariant on shell.
In this paper we analyze the interactions of a massive spin-2 particles charged under both Abelian and non-Abelian group using the Porrati-Rahman Lagrangian. This theory is valid up to an intrinsic cutoff scale. Phenomenologically a theory valid up to a cutoff scale is sensible as all known higher spin particles are non-fundamental and it is shown that indeed this action can be used to estimate some relevant cross section. Such action necessarily includes Stuckelberg field and therefore it is necessary to fix the corresponding gauge symmetry. We show that this theory, when the Stuckelberg symm…
We propose a new type of quantum liquids, dubbed Stiefel liquids, based on $2+1$ dimensional nonlinear sigma models on target space $SO(N)/SO(4)$, supplemented with Wess-Zumino-Witten terms. We argue that the Stiefel liquids form a class of critical quantum liquids with extraordinary properties, such as large emergent symmetries, a cascade structure, and nontrivial quantum anomalies. We show that the well known deconfined quantum critical point and $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid are unified as two special examples of Stiefel liquids, with $N=5$ and $N=6$, respectively. Furthermore, we conjecture tha…
