Using ab initio tight-binding approaches, we investigate Floquet band engineering of the 1T' phase of transition metal dichalcogenides (MX2, M = W, Mo and X = Te, Se, S) monolayers under the irradiation with circularly polarized light. Our first principles calculations demonstrate that light can induce important transitions in the topological phases of this emerging materials family. For example, upon irradiation, Te-based MX2 undergoes a phase transition from quantum spin Hall (QSH) semimetal to time-reversal symmetry broken QSH insulator with a nontrivial band gap of up to 92.5 meV. On the other hand, Se- and S-based MX2 undergoes the topological phase transition from the QSH effect to the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect and into trivial phases with increasing light intensity. From a general perspective, our work brings further insight into non-equilibrium topological systems.
Time-periodic light field has emerged as a control knob for manipulating quantum states in solid-state materials, cold atoms and photonic systems via hybridization with photon-dressed Floquet states in the strong coupling limit, dubbed as Floquet engineering. Such interaction leads to tailored properties of quantum materials, for example, modifications of the topological properties of Dirac materials and modulation of the optical response. Despite extensive research interests over the past decade, there is no experimental evidence of momentum-resolved Floquet band engineering of semiconductors…

Observing signatures of light-induced Floquet topological states in materials has been shown to be very challenging. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is well suited for the investigation of Floquet physics, as it allows to directly probe the dressed electronic states of driven solids. Depending on the system, scattering and decoherence can play an important role, hampering the emergence of Floquet states. Another challenge is to disentangle Floquet side bands from laser-assisted photoemission (LAPE), since both lead to similar signatures in ARPES spectra. Here, we investigate …
We review recent work on low-frequency Floquet engineering and its application to quantum materials driven by light, emphasizing van der Waals systems hosting Moiré superlattices. These non-equilibrium systems combine the twist-angle sensitivity of the band structures with the flexibility of light drives. The frequency, amplitude, and polarization of light can be easily tuned in experimental setups, leading to platforms with on-demand properties. First, we review recent theoretical developments to derive effective Floquet Hamiltonians in different frequency regimes. We apply some of these theo…
Dynamic manipulation of magnetism in topological materials is demonstrated here via a Floquet engineering approach using circularly polarized light. Increasing the strength of the laser field, besides the expected topological phase transition, the magnetically doped topological insulator thin film also undergoes a magnetic phase transition from ferromagnetism to paramagnetism, whose critical behavior strongly depends on the quantum quenching. In sharp contrast to the equilibrium case, the non-equilibrium Curie temperatures vary for different time scale and experimental setup, not all relying o…
Using Floquet theory, we investigate the effect of light on triple fold fermions. We study a low energy model as well as a simplified tight binding model under illumination. We find that the three fold degeneracy remains symmetry protected even after applying light if the original band structure is rotationally symmetric around the degeneracy. Otherwise, light can lift the degeneracy and open up a gap. We further investigate the effect of light on the topological Fermi arcs by means of numerical computations. The changes caused by illumination are reflected in experimentally detectable signatu…
We report on a possible optical tuning of the spin Hall conductivity in mono-layer transition metal dichalcogenides. Light beams of frequencies much higher than the energy scale of the system (the \textit{off-resonant} condition) does not excite electrons but rearranges the band structure. The rearrangement is quantitatively established using the Floquet formalism. For such a system of mono-layer transition metal dichalcogenides, the spin Hall conductivity (calculated with the Kubo expression in presence of disorder) exhibits a drop at higher frequencies and lower intensities. Finally, we comp…
We consider driving multi-orbital Mott insulators using laser radiation. We derive general expressions for periodically driven spin-orbital models using time-dependent perturbation theory in the strong interaction limit. We show that the effective exchange interactions of the Floquet spin-orbital Hamiltonian are highly tunable via variations of the frequency, amplitude, and polarization of the laser. We also take the effect of finite bandwidth of excitations into account and study possible heating effects. We further apply our formalism to orthorhombic titanates YTiO$_3$ and LaTiO$_3$ based on…

Recent progresses on Floquet topological phases have shed new light on time-dependant quantum systems, among which one-dimensional (1D) Floquet systems have been under extensive theoretical research. However, an unambiguous experimental observation of these 1D Floquet topological phases has still been lacking. Here, by periodically bending ultrathin metallic arrays of coupled corrugated waveguides, a photonic Floquet simulator was well designed and successfully fabricated to simulate the periodically driven Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Intriguingly, under moderate driven frequencies, we first e…
Motivated by the recent experimental realization of twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) samples we study, both analytically and numerically, the effects of circularly polarized light propagating in free space and confined into a waveguide on the band structure and topological properties of these systems. These two complementary Floquet protocols allow us to selectively tune different parameters of the system by varying the intensity and the frequency of the light. For the drive protocol in free space, in the high-frequency regime, we find that in TDBG with AB/BA stacking, we can selectively…

We study the electromechanical response of Janus transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanotubes from first principles. In particular, considering both armchair and zigzag variants of twenty-seven select Janus TMD nanotubes, we determine the change in bandgap and charge carriers' effective mass upon axial and torsional deformations using density functional theory (DFT). We observe that metallic nanotubes remain unaffected, whereas the bandgap in semiconducting nanotubes decreases linearly and quadratically with axial and shear strains, respectively, leading to semiconductor--metal transitions.…
We investigate the topological properties of Floquet-engineered twisted bilayer graphene above the magic angle driven by circularly polarized laser pulses. Employing a full Moiré-unit-cell tight-binding Hamiltonian based on first-principles electronic structure we show that the band topology in the bilayer, at twisting angles above 1.05$^\circ$, essentially corresponds to the one of single-layer graphene. However, the ability to open topologically trivial gaps in this system by a bias voltage between the layers enables the full topological phase diagram to be explored, which is not possible in…
We propose a method for controlling the exchange interactions of Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling. We consider a multiorbital system with strong spin-orbit coupling and a circularly polarized light field and derive its effective Hamiltonian in the strong-interaction limit. Applying this theory to a minimal model of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, we show that the magnitudes and signs of three exchange interactions, $J$, $K$, and $Γ$, can be changed simultaneously. Then, considering another case in which one of the hopping integrals has a different value and the other parameters are the same as …
We study the effect of torsional deformations on the electronic properties of single-walled transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanotubes. In particular, considering forty-five select armchair and zigzag TMD nanotubes, we perform symmetry-adapted Kohn-Sham density functional theory calculations to determine the variation in bandgap and effective mass of charge carriers with twist. We find that metallic nanotubes remain so even after deformation, whereas semiconducting nanotubes experience a decrease in bandgap with twist -- originally direct bandgaps become indirect -- resulting in semicondu…
Two-dimensional (2D) van-der-Waals semiconductors have emerged as a class of materials with promising device characteristics owing to the intrinsic bandgap. For realistic applications, the ideal is to modify the bandgap in a controlled manner by a mechanism that can be generally applied to this class of materials. Here, we report the observation of a universally tunable bandgap in the family of bulk 2H transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) by in situ surface doping of Rb atoms. A series of angle-resolved photoemission spectra unexceptionally shows that the bandgap of TMDs at the zone corners…
We demonstrate that the electronic structure of a material can be deformed into Floquet pseudo-bands with arbitrarily tailored shapes. We achieve this goal with a novel combination of quantum optimal control theory and Floquet engineering. The power and versatility of this framework is demonstrated here by utilizing the independent-electron tight-binding description of the $π$ electronic system of graphene. We show several prototype examples focusing on the region around the K (Dirac) point of the Brillouin zone: creation of a gap with opposing flat valence and conduction bands, creation of a …
The objective of this work is to study the effects of charge redistribution, applied layer-normal electric fields, applied strain, and layer engineering on the band alignment of Black Phosphorus (BP)/Molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) heterostructure through Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations. Black phosphorus works as a p-type material with high mobility, mechanical flexibility, and sensitivity to number of layers. Combining it with the more electronegative material, MoS2 results in strong carrier confinement and a Type II heterostructure. Charge redistribution among the layers shifts the …
In quantum mechanics, adiabatic elimination is a standard tool that produces a low-lying reduced Hamiltonian for a relevant subspace of states, incorporating effects of its coupling to states with much higher energy. Suppose this powerful elimination approach is applied to quasi-energy states in periodically-driven systems, a critical question then arises that the violation of the adiabatic condition caused by driven forces challenges such a presence of spectral reduction in the non-equilibrium driven system. Here, both theoretically and experimentally, we newly reported two kinds of driven-in…
