We study a system of 2D trapped bosons in a quasiperiodic potential via ab initio Path Integral Monte Carlo simulations, focusing on its finite temperature properties, which have not yet been explored. Alongside the superfluid, normal fluid and insulating phases, we demonstrate the existence of a Bose glass phase, which is found to be robust to thermal fluctuations, up to about half of the critical temperature of the non-interacting system. Local quantities in the trap are characterized by employing zonal estimators, allowing us to trace a phase diagram; we do so for a set of parameters within reach of current experiments with quasi-2D optical confinement.
In this work, we explore the relevant methodology for the investigation of interacting systems with contact interactions, and we introduce a class of zonal estimators for path-integral Monte Carlo methods, designed to provide physical information about limited regions of inhomogeneous systems. We demonstrate the usefulness of zonal estimators by their application to a system of trapped bosons in a quasiperiodic potential in two dimensions, focusing on finite temperature properties across a wide range of values of the potential. Finally, we comment on the generalization of such estimators to loc…
The emergence of a compressible insulator phase, known as the Bose glass, is characteristic of the interplay of interactions and disorder in correlated Bose fluids. While widely studied in tight-binding models, its observation remains elusive owing to stringent temperature effects. Here we show that this issue may be overcome by using Lieb-Liniger bosons in shallow quasiperiodic potentials. A Bose glass, surrounded by superfluid and Mott phases, is found above a critical potential and for finite interactions. At finite temperature, we show that the melting of the Mott lobes is characteristic o…
Motivated by two different types of disorder that occur in quantum systems with ubiquity, namely, the random and the quasiperiodic (QP) disorder, we have performed a systematic comparison of the emerging phase properties corresponding to these two cases for a system of interacting bosons in a two dimensional square lattice. Such a comparison is imperative as a random disorder at each lattice is completely uncorrelated, while a quasiperiodic disorder is deterministic in nature. Using a site decoupled mean-field approximation followed by a percolation analysis on a BoseHubbard model, several dif…
We study a variety of Hofstadter ladders in order to probe the interplay between interactions, an applied magnetic field and crystalline or quasiperiodic geometries. Rotational motion will be induced on charged particles when a magnetic field is present, which can result in exotic distributions of current on a lattice. Typically, the geometry of a ladder lattice is assumed to be homogeneous. In this work, however, we will also study ladders that possess non-uniform bond lengths, in order to study the formation of localised currents. By using Density Matrix Renormalisation Group (DMRG) to chara…
We present a general discussion of the dipole modes of a heteronuclear bosonic mixture in a harmonic trap by comparing the prediction of the sum-rule approach with full Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) calculations. Yet in the range of interaction in which the mixture is miscible and stable at the mean field level, $g_{12}^2<g_{11}g_{22}$, we find that there are regimes where the sum rules displays significant deviations from the GP solution. We provide an interpretation for this behavior in terms of the Ehrenfest approach, which we show to be equivalent to the sum-rule approach for dipole excitations.
Engineering quantum phases with spontaneously broken symmetries is a major goal of research in different fields. Trapped ultracold Rydberg-excited atoms in optical lattices are a promising platform for realizing quantum phases with broken lattice translational symmetry since they are interacting over distances larger than the lattice constant. Although numerous theoretical works on trapped Rydberg-excited gases have predicted such phases, in particular density wave or supersolid phases, their experimental observation proves to be difficult due to challenges such as scattering processes and the…
We address the interplay of few lattice trapped bosons interacting with an impurity atom in a box potential. For the ground state, a classification is performed based on the fidelity allowing to quantify the susceptibility of the composite system to structural changes due to the intercomponent coupling. We analyze the overall response at the many-body level and contrast it to the single-particle level. By inspecting different entropy measures we capture the degree of entanglement and intraspecies correlations for a wide range of intra- and intercomponent interactions and lattice depths. We als…
We explore the dynamical transport of an impurity between different embedding majority species which are spatially separated in a double well. The transfer and storage of the impurity is triggered by dynamically changing the interaction strengths between the impurity and the two majority species. We find a simple but efficient protocol consisting of linear ramps of majority-impurity interactions at designated times to pin or unpin the impurity. Our study of this highly imbalanced few-body triple mixture is conducted with the multi-layer multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree method for ato…
We investigate the ground state properties and the nonequilibrium dynamics of a lattice trapped bosonic mixture consisting of an impurity species and a finite-sized medium. For the case of one as well as two impurities we observe that, depending on the lattice depth and the interspecies interaction strength, a transition from a strongly delocalized to a localized impurity distribution occurs. In the latter regime the two species phase separate, thereby forming a particle-hole pair. For two impurities we find that below a critical lattice depth they are delocalized among two neighboring outer l…
Nascent platforms for programmable quantum simulation offer unprecedented access to new regimes of far-from-equilibrium quantum many-body dynamics in (approximately) isolated systems. Here, achieving precise control over quantum many-body entanglement is an essential task for quantum sensing and computation. Extensive theoretical work suggests that these capabilities can enable dynamical phases and critical phenomena that exhibit topologically-robust methods to create, protect, and manipulate quantum entanglement that self-correct against large classes of errors. However, to date, experimental…
In a mixture of two kinds of identical bosons there are two types of pairs, identical bosons' pairs, of either species, and pairs of distinguishable bosons. In the present work fragmentation of pairs in a trapped mixture of Bose-Einstein condensate is investigated using a solvable model, the symmetric harmonic-interaction model for mixtures. The natural geminals for pairs made of identical or distinguishable bosons are explicitly contracted by diagonalizing the intra-species and inter-species reduced two-particle density matrices, respectively. Properties of pairs' fragmentation in the mixture…
We consider trapped bosons with contact interactions as well as Coulomb repulsion or gravitational attraction in one spatial dimension. The exact ground state energy and wave function are identified in closed form together with a rich phase diagram, unveiled by Monte Carlo methods, with crossovers between different regimes. A trapped McGuire quantum soliton describes the attractive case. Weak repulsion results in an incompressible Laughlin-like fluid with flat density, well reproduced by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with long-range interactions. Higher repulsion induces Friedel oscillation and …
