The rapid accumulation of observed Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) originating from cosmological distances makes it likely that some will be strongly lensed by intervening matter along the line of sight. Detection of lensed FRB repeaters, which account for a noteworthy fraction of the total population, will allow not only an accurate measurement of the lensing time delay, but also follow-up high-resolution observations to pinpoint the location of the lensed images. Recent works proposed to use such strongly-lensed FRBs to derive constraints on the current expansion rate $ H_{0} $ as well as on cosmic curvature. Here we study the prospects for placing constraints on departures from general relativity via such systems. Using an ensemble of simulated events, we focus on the gravitational slip parameter $γ_{\rm PN}$ in screened modified gravity models and show that FRB time-delay measurements can yield constraints as tight as $ \left| γ_{\rm PN}-1\right| \lesssim 0.04\times(Λ/100\rm kpc)\times[N/10]^{-1/2} $ at $1σ$ with $10$ detections.
It has been recently shown that quadruply lensed gravitational-wave (GW) events due to coalescing binaries can be localized to one or just a few galaxies, even in the absence of an electromagnetic counterpart. We discuss how this can be used to extract information on modified GW propagation, which is a crucial signature of modifications of gravity at cosmological scales. We show that, using quadruply lensed systems, it is possible to constrain the parameter $Ξ_0$ that characterizes modified GW propagation, without the need of imposing a prior on $H_0$. Dark matter (DM) occupies the majority of matter content in the universe and is probably cold (CDM). However, modifications to the standard CDM model may be required by the small-scale observations, and DM may be self-interacting (SIDM) or warm (WDM). Here we show that the diffractive lensing of gravitational waves (GWs) from binary black hole mergers by small halos ($\sim10^3-10^6M_\odot$; mini-halos) may serve as a clean probe to the nature of DM, free from the contamination of baryonic processes in the DM studies based on dwarf/satellite galaxies. The expected lensed GW signals and event ra…
We devise a test of nonlinear departures from general relativity (GR) using time delays in strong gravitational lenses. We use a phenomenological model of gravitational screening as a step discontinuity in the measure of curvature per unit mass, at a radius $Λ$. The resulting slip between two scalar gravitational potentials leads to a shift in the apparent positions and time delays of lensed sources, relative to the GR predictions, of size $γ_{\rm PN}-1$. As a proof of principle, we use measurements of two lenses, RXJ1121-1231 and B1608+656, to constrain deviations from GR to be below $|γ_{\rm…
Modified gravitational wave propagation is a smoking gun of modifications of gravity at cosmological scales, and can be the most promising observable for testing such theories. The observation of gravitational waves (GW) in recent years has allowed us to start probing this effect, and here we briefly review two promising ways of testing it. We will show that, already with the current network of detectors, it is possible to reach an interesting accuracy in the estimation of the $Ξ_0$ parameter (that characterizes modified gravitational wave propagation, with $Ξ_{0, {\rm GR}} = 1$) and with next…

We consider gravitational wave (GW) sources with an associated electromagnetic (EM) counterpart, and analyze the time delay between both signals in the presence of lensing. If GWs have wavelengths comparable to the Schwarzschild radius of astrophysical lenses, they must be treated with wave optics, whereas EM waves are typically well within the approximation of geometric optics. With concrete examples, we confirm that the GW signal never arrives before its EM counterpart, if both are emitted at the same time. However, during the inspiral of a binary, peaks of the GW waveform can arrive before …
In this Letter, we present a new idea of probing the distribution of dark matter exhibiting elastic and velocity-independent self-interactions. These interactions might be revealed in multiple measurements of strongly lensed gravitational waves, which can be observationally explored to determine the strength of self-scatterings. Specifically, each individual galactic-scale strong-lensing system whose source is a coalescing compact binary emitting gravitational waves will provide a model-independent measurement of the shear viscosity of dark matter along the line of sight. These individual meas…
Cosmic strings are important remnants of early-Universe phase transitions. We show that they can be probed by Gravitational Waves (GWs) from compact binary mergers. If such chirping GW passes by a cosmic string, it is gravitationally lensed and left with a characteristic signal of the lensing -- the GW fringe. It is observable naturally through the frequency chirping of GWs. This allows to probe cosmic strings with small tension $Δ= 8πG μ= 10^{-6} \text{ -- } 10^{-10}$, just below the current constraint, at high-frequency LIGO-band and mid-band detectors. Although its detection rates are estim…
Gravitational lensing has emerged as a powerful probe of the matter distribution on subgalactic scales, which itself may contain important clues about the fundamental origins and properties of dark matter. Broadly speaking, two different approaches have been taken in the literature to map the small-scale structure of the Universe using strong lensing, with one focused on measuring the position and mass of a small number of discrete massive subhalos appearing close in projection to lensed images, and the other focused on detecting the collective effect of all the small-scale structure between t…

This study explores the gravitational lensing effects of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in galaxy clusters. While the presence of central SMBHs in galaxies is firmly established, recent work from high-resolution simulations predict the existence of an additional population of wandering SMBHs. Though the masses of these SMBHs are a minor perturbation on the larger scale and individual galaxy scale dark matter components in the cluster, they can impact statistical lensing properties and individual lensed image configurations. Probing for these potentially observable signatures, we find that SM…
