Wehrenberg et. al. [Nature 550 496 (2017)] used ultrafast in situ x-ray diffraction at the LCLS x-ray free-electron laser facility to measure large lattice rotations resulting from slip and deformation twinning in shock-compressed laser-driven [110] fibre textured tantalum polycrystal. We employ a crystal plasticity finite element method model, with slip kinetics based closely on the isotropic dislocation-based Livermore Multiscale Model [Barton et. al., J. Appl. Phys. 109 (2011)], to analyse this experiment. We elucidate the link between the degree of lattice rotation and the kinetics of plasticity, demonstrating that a transition occurs at shock pressures of $\sim$27 GPa, between a regime of relatively slow kinetics, resulting in a balanced pattern of slip system activation and therefore relatively small net lattice rotation, and a regime of fast kinetics, due to the onset of nucleation, resulting in a lop-sided pattern of deformation-system activation and therefore large net lattice rotations. We demonstrate a good fit between this model and experimental x-ray diffraction data of lattice rotation, and show that this data is constraining of deformation kinetics.
Along with high strength, plasticity is what makes metals so widely usable in our material world. Both strength and plasticity properties of a metal are defined by the motion of dislocations - line defects in the crystal lattice that divide areas of atomic planes displaced relative to each other by an interatomic distance. Here we present first fully dynamic atomistic simulations of single crystal plasticity in metal tantalum predicting that above certain maximum rate of straining - the ultimate limit - the dislocations can no longer relieve mechanical loads and another mechanism, twinning, co…
The high pressure and high temperature phase diagram of Ta has been studied in a laser-heated diamond-anvil cell (DAC) using x-ray diffraction measurements up to 52 GPa and 3800 K. The melting was observed at nine different pressures, being the melting temperature in good agreement with previous laser-heated DAC experiments, but in contradiction with several theoretical calculations and previous piston-cylinder apparatus experiments. A small slope for the melting curve of Ta is estimated (dTm/dP = 24 K/GPa at 1 bar) and a possible explanation for this behaviour is given. Finally, a P-V-T equat…
When compressed, a metallic specimen will generally experience changes to its crystallographic texture due to plasticity-induced rotation. Ultrafast x-ray diffraction techniques make it possible to measure rotation of this kind in targets dynamically compressed over nanosecond timescales to the kind of pressures ordinarily encountered in planetary interiors. The axis and the extent of the local rotation can provide hints as to the combination of plasticity mechanisms activated by the rapid uniaxial compression, thus providing valuable information about the underlying dislocation kinetics opera…
There is a long standing technological problem in which a stress dwell during cyclic loading at room temperature in Ti causes a significant fatigue life reduction. It is thought that localised time dependent plasticity in soft grains oriented for easy plastic slip leads to load shedding and an increase in stress within a neighbouring hard grain poorly oriented for easy slip. Quantifying this time dependent plasticity process is key to successfully predicting the complex cold dwell fatigue problem. This work uses a novel approach of in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction during stress relaxation…
A physically-informed continuum crystal plasticity model is presented to elucidate the deformation mechanisms and dislocation evolution in body-centered-cubic (bcc) tantalum widely used as a key structural material for mechanical and thermal extremes. We show our unified structural modeling framework informed by mesoscopic dislocation dynamics simulations is capable of capturing salient features of the large inelastic behavior of tantalum at quasi-static (10$^{-3}$ s$^{-1}$) to extreme strain rates (5000 s$^{-1}$) and at room temperature and higher (873K) at both single- and polycrystal levels…
This work integrates in-situ neutron diffraction and crystal plasticity finite element modeling to study the kinematic stability of retained austenite in high carbon bearing steels. The presence of a kinematically metastable retained austenite in bearing steels can significantly affect the macro-mechanical and micro-mechanical material response. Mechanical characterization of metastable austenite is a critical component in accurately capturing the micro-mechanical behavior under typical application loads. Traditional mechanical characterization techniques are unable to discretely quantify the …
Plastic deformations in body-centered-cubic (BCC) crystals have been of critical importance in diverse engineering and manufacturing contexts across length scales. Numerous experiments and atomistic simulations on BCC crystals reveal that classical crystal plasticity models with the Schmid law are not adequate to account for abnormal plastic deformations often found in these crystals. In this paper, we address a continuum mechanical treatment of anomalous plasticity in BCC crystals exhibiting non-Schmid effects, inspired from atomistic simulations recently reported. Specifically, anomalous fea…
Quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) materials hold promise for future electronics because of their unique band structures that result in electronic and mechanical properties sensitive to crystal strains in all three dimensions. Quantifying crystal strain is a prerequisite to correlating it with the performance of the device, and calls for high resolution but spatially resolved rapid characterization methods. Here we show that using fly-scan nano X-ray diffraction we can accomplish a tensile strain sensitivity below 0.001% with a spatial resolution of better than 80 nm over a spatial extent of 100…
The mechanical properties of polycrystalline metals are governed by the interaction of defects that are generated by deformation within the 3D microstructure. In materials that deform by slip, the plasticity is usually highly heterogeneous within the microstructure. Many experimental tools can be used to observe the results of slip events at the free surface of a sample; however, there are only a few methods for imaging these events in the bulk. In this article, the imaging of bulk slip events within the 3D microstructure are enabled by the combined use of X-ray diffraction contrast tomography…
There is a long-standing technological problem in which a stress dwell during cyclic loading at room temperature in Ti causes a significant fatigue life reduction. It is thought that localised time dependent plasticity in soft grains favourably oriented for easy plastic slip leads to load shedding and an increase in stress within a neighbouring hard grain poorly oriented for easy slip. Quantifying this time dependent plasticity process is key to understand the complex cold dwell fatigue problem. Knowing the effect of operating temperature and oxygen content on cold dwell fatigue will be benefi…

We report the successful fabrication of superconducting tantalum nitride (TaN) thin films using a pulsed laser deposition technique with 1064 nm radiation. Films with thickness $ \sim $ 100 nm deposited on MgO (100) single crystals and on oxidized silicon (SiO$_{2} $) substrates exhibited a superconducting transition temperature of $\sim $ 8 K and 6 K, respectively. The topography of these films were investigated using atomic force and scanning electron microscopy, revealing fairly large area particulate free and smooth surfaces, while the structure of the films were investigated using standar…
The plastic response of beryllium was investigated during loading by laser-induced shock waves, using surface velocimetry and in-situ x-ray diffraction. Results from loading by thermal x-rays (hohlraum) were consistent with more extensive studies using laser ablation. Strong elastic waves were observed, up to ~1 km/s in free surface speed, with significant structure before the arrival of the plastic shock. The magnitude and shape of the precursor could be reproduced with a plasticity model based on dislocation dynamics. Changes in lattice spacing measured from the x-ray diffraction pattern gav…

Voids can limit the life of engineering components. This motivates us to understand local plasticity around voids in a nickel base superalloy combining experiments and simulations. Single crystal samples were deformed in tension with in-situ high angular resolution electron back scatter diffraction to probe the heterogeneous local stress field under load; the reference stress is informed by crystal plasticity finite element simulations. This information is used to understand the activation of plastic deformation around the void. Our investigation indicates that while the resolved shear stress …
A metastable austenitic Fe-Cr-Ni steel was processed by selective laser melting with low power, resulting in nearly random crystallographic texture. In-situ tensile loading and neutron diffraction experiments were undertaken and the results indicate high ductility, despite the presence of porosity, and pronounced strain-induced martensitic transformation. A secondary hardening is observed in the mechanical data due to the martensite carrying significant load, upon its formation. The pronounced martensitic transformation is discussed with respect to the initial and the evolving deformation text…
The systems Nb$_2$O$_5$-Ta$_2$O$_5$ and Nb$_2$O$_5$-V$_2$O$_5$ were investigated using thermal analysis, X-ray powder diffraction and thermodynamic simulations. Solid solution formation is possible for both systems; furthermore, both contain one intermediate compound, VNb$_9$O$_{25}$ or Ta$_2$Nb$_4$O$_{15}$, respectively. Phase relationships for pure niobium(V)-oxide and tantalum(V)-oxide were studied under ambient pressure. It was found that both compounds can occur in two stable solid modifications. For niobium(V)-oxide this are the monoclinic high-temperature modification (H-Nb$_2$O$_5$) an…
A growing number of shock compression experiments, especially those involving laser compression, are taking advantage of in situ x-ray diffraction as a tool to interrogate structure and microstructure evolution. Although these experiments are becoming increasingly sophisticated, there has been little work on exploiting the textured nature of polycrystalline targets to gain information on sample response. Here, we describe how to generate simulated x-ray diffraction patterns from materials with an arbitrary texture function subject to a general deformation gradient. We will present simulations …
Understanding deformation in polycrystalline metals is critical to use them in high-value high-risk applications. We present in-situ characterisation of plastic deformation of zirconium, a hexagonal closed packed (HCP), metal. Analysis of plastic deformation is performed using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) to reveal changes in lattice orientation. Through implementation of TrueEBSD, we can relate the lattice rotations back to the undeformed reference frame. This enables us to explore which slip systems are active and the degree of homogeneous (i.e. deformation with respect to the ext…

Ultra-low density polymers, metals, and ceramic nanofoams are valued for their high strength-to-weight ratio, high surface area and insulating properties ascribed to their structural geometry. We obtain the labrynthine internal structure of a tantalum oxide nanofoam by X-ray diffractive imaging. Finite element analysis from the structure reveals mechanical properties consistent with bulk samples and with a diffusion limited cluster aggregation model, while excess mass on the nodes discounts the dangling fragments hypothesis of percolation theory.
We investigate the effect of post-deposition annealing (for temperatures from 848 K to 1273 K) on the chemical properties of crystalline Ta$_2$O$_5$ films grown on Si(100) substrates by radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The atomic arrangement, as determined by X-ray diffraction, is predominately hexagonal ($δ$-Ta$_2$O$_5$) for the films exposed to heat treatments at 948 K and 1048 K; orthorhombic ($β$-Ta$_2$O$_5$) for samples annealed at 1148 K and 1273 K; and amorphous for samples annealed at temperatures below 948 K. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for Ta $4f$ and O $1s$ core-levels wer…
We present a novel machine learning based surrogate modeling method for predicting spatially resolved 3D microstructure evolution of polycrystalline materials under uniaxial tensile loading. Our approach is orders of magnitude faster than the existing crystal plasticity methods enabling the simulation of large volumes that would be otherwise computationally prohibitive. This work is a major step beyond existing ML-based modeling results, which have been limited to either 2D structures or only providing average, rather than local, predictions. We demonstrate the speed and accuracy of our surrog…
Here we analyze a three-dimensional distribution of crystallographic slip measured in-situ during the uniaxial deformation of hexagonal Ti-7Al. The slip field is reconstructed using a novel methodology that combines spatially resolved lattice orientation fields and grain-averaged stresses measured using high-energy X-ray diffraction microscopy (HEDM) with crystal plasticity. Analysis is performed to explore lattice orientation dependence, stress dependence, and connectivity (network relationships) of grains experiencing elevated amounts of slip. Elevated slip is found to be primarily associate…

Tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) is a wide-gap semiconductor which has important technological applications. Despite the enormous efforts from both experimental and theoretical studies, the ground state crystal structure of Ta2O5 is not yet uniquely determined. Based on first-principles calculations in combination with evolutionary algorithm, we identify a triclinic phase of Ta2O5, which is energetically much more stable than any phases or structural models reported previously. Characterization of the static and dynamical properties of the new phase reveals the common features shared with previous m…

Knowledge of the state of plastic deformation in metallic structures is vital to prevent failure. This is why non-destructive acoustic tests based on the measurement of first order elastic constants have been developed and intensively used. However, plastic deformations, which are usually heterogeneous in space, may be invisible to these methods if the variation of the elastic constants is too small. In recent years, digital image correlation techniques, based on measurements carried out at the surface of a sample, have been successfully used in conjunction with finite element modeling to gain…
Calibrating and verifying crystal plasticity material models is a significant challenge, particularly for materials with a number of potential slip and twin systems. Here we use digital image correlation on coarse-grained $α$-uranium during tensile testing in conjunction with crystal plasticity finite element simulations. This approach allows us to determine the critical resolved shear stress, and hardening rate of the different slip and twin systems. The constitutive model is based on dislocation densities as state variables and the simulated geometry is constructed from electron backscatter …
The strength of the lithosphere is typically modelled based on constitutive equations for steady-state flow. However, models of lithospheric flexure reveal differences in lithospheric strength that are difficult to reconcile based on such flow laws. Recent rheological data from low-temperature deformation experiments on olivine suggest that this discrepancy may be largely explained by strain hardening. Details of the mechanical data, specifically the effects of temperature-independent back stresses stored in the samples, indicate that strain hardening in olivine occurs primarily due to long-ra…
A mesoscale study of a single crystal nickel-base superalloy subjected to an industrially relevant process simulation has revealed the complex interplay between microstructural development and the micromechanical behaviour. As sample gauge volumes were smaller than the length scale of the highly cored structure of the parent material from which they were produced, their subtle composition differences gave rise to differing work hardening rates, influenced by varying secondary dendrite arm spacings, gamma-prime phase solvus temperatures and a topologically inverted gamma/gamma-prime microstruct…
The influence of the physical mechanisms activated during deformation and annealing on the microstructure and texture evolution as well as on the mechanical properties in the equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) were investigated. A combination of cold rolling and annealing was used to investigate the HEA in the deformed, recovered, partially recrystallized, and fully recrystallized states. Detailed microstructure and texture analysis was performed by electron backscatter diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The mechanical properties were evaluated us…
In this paper, we investigate the residual deformation field in the vicinity of nano-scratch tests using two orientations of a Berkovich tip on an (001) Cu single crystal. We compare the deformation with that from indentation, in an attempt to understand the mechanisms of deformation in tangential sliding. The lattice rotation fields are mapped experimentally using high-resolution electron backscatter diffraction (HR-EBSD) on cross-sections prepared using focused ion beam (FIB). A physically-based crystal plasticity finite element model (CPFEM) is used to simulate the lattice rotation fields, …
Changes in lattice structure across sub-regions of protein crystals are challenging to assess when relying on whole crystal measurements. Because of this difficulty, macromolecular structure determination from protein micro and nano crystals requires assumptions of bulk crystallinity and domain block substructure. To evaluate the fidelity of these assumptions in protein nanocrystals we map lattice structure across micron size areas of cryogenically preserved three-dimensional peptide crystals using a nano-focused electron beam. This approach produces diffraction from as few as 1,500 molecules …
When a metallic specimen is plastically deformed, its underlying crystal structure must often rotate in order to comply with its macroscopic boundary conditions. There is growing interest within the dynamic compression community in exploiting x-ray diffraction measurements of lattice rotation to infer which combinations of plasticity mechanisms are operative in uniaxially shock- or ramp-compressed crystals, thus informing materials science at the greatest extremes of pressure and strain rate. However, it is not widely appreciated that several of the existing models linking rotation to slip act…
Silicon (Si) is one of the most abundant elements on Earth, and it is the most important and widely used semiconductor, constituting the basis of modern electronic devices. Despite extensive study, some properties of Si remain elusive. For example, the behaviour of Si under high pressure, in particular at the ultra-high strain rates characteristic of dynamic compression, has been a matter of debate for decades. A detailed understanding of how Si deforms is crucial for a variety of fields, ranging from planetary science to materials design. Simulations suggest that in Si the shear stress genera…
