The optoelectronic properties of nanoscale systems such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene nanoribbons and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are determined by their dielectric function. This complex, frequency dependent function is affected by excitonic resonances, charge transfer effects, doping, sample stress and strain, and surface roughness. Knowledge of the dielectric function grants access to a material's transmissive and absorptive characteristics. Here we introduce the dual scanning near field optical microscope (dual s-SNOM) for imaging local dielectric variations and extracting dielectric function values using a mathematical inversion method. To demonstrate our approach, we studied a monolayer of WS$_2$ on bulk Au and identified two areas with differing levels of charge transfer. Our measurements are corroborated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), Kelvin force probe microscopy (KPFM), photoluminescence (PL) intensity mapping, and tip enhanced photoluminescence (TEPL). We extracted local dielectric variations from s-SNOM images and confirmed the reliability of the obtained values with spectroscopic imaging ellipsometry (SIE) measurements.
Electronic conduction pathways in dielectric thin films are explored using automated experiments in scanning probe microscopy (SPM). Here, we use large field of view scanning to identify the position of localized conductive spots and develop a SPM workflow to probe their dynamic behavior at higher spatial resolution as a function of time, voltage, and scanning process in an automated fashion. Using this approach, we observe the variable behaviors of the conductive spots in a 20 nm thick ferroelectric Hf0.54Zr0.48O2 film, where conductive spots disappear and reappear during continuous scanning.…
Electrical double layers play a key role in a variety of electrochemical systems. The mean free path of secondary electrons in aqueous solutions is on the order of a nanometer, making them suitable for probing of ultrathin electrical double layers at solid-liquid electrolyte interfaces. Employing graphene as an electron-transparent electrode in a two-electrode electrochemical system, we show that the secondary electron yield of the graphene-liquid interface depends on the ionic strength and concentration of electrolyte and applied bias at the remote counter electrode. These observations have b…
We present an imaging modality that enables detection of magnetic moments and their resulting stray magnetic fields. We use wide-field magnetic imaging that employs a diamond-based magnetometer and has combined magneto-optic detection (e.g. magneto-optic Kerr effect) capabilities. We employ such an instrument to image magnetic (stripe) domains in multilayered ferromagnetic structures.
We use a near-field scanning microwave microscope to simultaneously image the dielectric constant, loss tangent, and topography in a PbTiO_3 crystal. By this method, we study the effects of the local dielectric constant and loss tangent in the geometry of periodic domains on the measured resonant frequency, and quality factor. We also carry out theoretical calculations and the results agree well with the experimental data and reveal the anisotropic nature of dielectric constant.
Characterizing and controlling the out-of-equilibrium state of nanostructured Mott insulators hold great promises for emerging quantum technologies while providing an exciting playground for investigating fundamental physics of strongly-correlated systems. Here, we use two-colour near-field ultrafast electron microscopy to photo-induce the insulator-to-metal transition in a single VO2 nanowire and probe the ensuing electronic dynamics with combined nanometer-femtosecond resolution. We take advantage of a femtosecond temporal gating of the electron pulse mediated by an infrared laser pulse, and…
In analogy with optical near-field scanning methods, we use tapered dielectric waveguides as probes for a millimeter wave vector network analyzer. By scanning thin samples between two such probes we are able to map the spatially varying dielectric properties of materials with sub-wavelength resolution; using a 150 GHz probe in transmision mode we see spatial resolution of around 500 microns. We have applied this method to a variety of highly heterogeneous materials. Here we show dielectric maps of granite and oil shale.
We report on linear and non-linear dielectric property measurements of BaTiO3 - CoFe2O4 (BTO-CFO) ferroelectro-magnetic nano-composites and pure BaTiO3 and CoFe2O4 samples with Scanning Near Field Microwave Microscopy. The permittivity scanning image with spatial resolution on the micro-meter scale shows that the nano-composites have very uniform quality with an effective dielectric constant ε_r = 140 +/- 6.4 at 3.8 GHz and room temperature. The temperature dependence of dielectric permittivity shows that the Curie temperature of pure BTO was shifted by the clamping effect of the MgO substrate…
Interfaces remain one of the major issues in limiting the understanding and designing polymer nanocomposites due to their complexity and pivotal role in determining the ultimate composites properties. In this study, we take multi-walled carbon nanotubes/silicone rubber nanocomposites as a representative example, and have for the first time studied the correlation between high-frequency dielectric dispersion and static/dynamic interfacial characteristics. We have found that the interface together with other meso-structural parameters (volume fraction, dispersion, agglomeration) play decisive ro…
In this paper we demonstrate a quantitative way to measure the membrane potential of live cells by dielectric spectroscopy. We also show that the values of the membrane potential obtained using our technique are in good agreement with those obtained using traditional methods-voltage sensitive dyes. The membrane potential is determined by fitting the experimental dielectric dispersion curves with the dispersion curves obtain from a theoretical model. Variations in the membrane potential were induced by modifying the concentration of potassium chloride in the solution of the cell suspension in t…
Dielectric measurements on insulating materials at cryogenic temperatures can be challenging, depending on the frequency and temperature ranges of interest. We present a technique to study the dielectric properties of bulk dielectrics at GHz frequencies. A superconducting coplanar Nb resonator is deposited directly on the material of interest, and this resonator is then probed in distant-flip-chip geometry with a microwave feedline on a separate chip. Evaluating several harmonics of the resonator gives access to various probing frequencies, in the present studies up to 20 GHz. We demonstrate t…
We demonstrate that the magnetic nanoskyrmion lattice on the Fe monolayer on Ir(111) and the positions of the Fe atoms can be resolved simultaneously using magnetic exchange force microscopy. Thus, the relation between magnetic and atomic structure can be determined straightforwardly by evaluating the Fourier transformation of the real space image data. We further show that the magnetic contrast can be mapped on a Heisenberg-like magnetic interaction between tip and sample spins. Since our imaging technique is based on measuring forces, our observation paves the way to study skyrmions or other…
There has been considerable interest in chalcogenide alloys with high concentrations of native vacancies that lead to properties desirable for thermoelectric and phase-change materials. Recently, vacancy ordering has been identified as the mechanism for metal-insulator transitions observed in GeSb2Te4 and an unexpectedly low thermal conductivity in Ga2Te3. Here, we report the direct observation of vacancy ordering in Ga2SeTe2 utilizing aberration-corrected electron microscopy. Images reveal a cation-anion dumbbell inversion associated with the accommodation of vacancy ordering across the entir…
An accurate estimate of the ferroelectric polarization in ferroelectric-dielectric stacks is important from a materials science perspective, and it is also crucial for the development of ferroelectric based electron devices. This paper revisits the theory and application of the PUND technique in Metal-Ferroelectric-Dielectric-Metal (MFDM) structures by using analytical derivations and numerical simulations. In an MFDM structure the results of the PUND technique may largely differ from the polarization actually switched in the stack, which in turn is different from the remnant polarization of t…
A universal challenge facing the development of electrochemical materials is our lack of understanding of physical and chemical processes at local length scales in 10-100 nm regime, and acquiring this understanding requires a new generation of imaging techniques. In this article, we introduce the scanning thermo-ionic microscopy (STIM) for probing local electrochemistry at the nanoscale, using for imaging the Vegard strain induced via thermal stress excitations. Since ionic oscillation is driven by the stress instead of voltage, the responses are insensitive to the electromechanical, electrost…
Electrochemical insertion-deintercalation reactions are typically associated with significant change of molar volume of the host compound. This strong coupling between ionic currents and strains underpins image formation mechanisms in electrochemical strain microscopy (ESM), and allows exploring the tip-induced electrochemical processes locally. Here we analyze the signal formation mechanism in ESM, and develop the analytical description of operation in frequency and time domains. The ESM spectroscopic modes are compared to classical electrochemical methods including potentiostatic and galvano…
The determination of minority-carrier lifetimes and surface recombination velocities is essential for the development of semiconductor technologies such as solar cells. The recent development of two-photon time-resolved microscopy allows for better measurements of bulk and subsurface interfaces properties. Here we analyze the diffusion problem related to this optical technique. Our three-dimensional treatment enables us to separate lifetime (recombination) from transport effects (diffusion) in the photoluminescence intensity. It also allows us to consider surface recombination occurring at a v…
We demonstrate that a near-field microwave microscope based on a transmission line resonator allows imaging in a substantially wide range of frequencies, so that the microscope properties approach those of a spatially-resolved impedance analyzer. In the case of an electric probe, the broadband imaging can be used in a direct fashion to separate contributions from capacitive and resistive properties of a sample at length scales on the order of one micron. Using a microwave near-field microscope based on a transmission line resonator we imaged the local dielectric properties of a Focused Ion Bea…
Excitons in atomically-thin semiconductors necessarily lie close to a surface, and therefore their properties are expected to be strongly influenced by the surrounding dielectric environment. However, systematic studies exploring this role are challenging, in part because the most readily accessible exciton parameter -- the exciton's optical transition energy -- is largely \textit{un}affected by the surrounding medium. Here we show that the role of the dielectric environment is revealed through its systematic influence on the \textit{size} of the exciton, which can be directly measured via the…
The robust approach for real-time analysis of the scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) data streams, based on the ensemble learning and iterative training (ELIT) of deep convolutional neural networks, is implemented on an operational microscope, enabling the exploration of the dynamics of specific atomic configurations under electron beam irradiation via an automated experiment in STEM. Combined with beam control, this approach allows studying beam effects on selected atomic groups and chemical bonds in a fully automated mode. Here, we demonstrate atomically precise engineering of …
In this work, we report electronic structure calculations aimed at computing the linear optical absorption spectrum, and static dipole polarizablity of a newly proposed boron-based planar aromatic compound borozene (B_12H_6$. For the purpose, we use the semiempirical INDO model Hamiltonian, accompanied by large-scale correlation calculations using the multi-reference singles-doubles configuration-interaction (MRSDCI) approach. We present detailed predictions about the energetics, polarization properties, and the nature of many-particle states contributing to various peaks in the linear absorpt…
Combination of local heating and biasing at the tip-surface junction in temperature-assisted piezoresponse force microscopy (tPFM) opens the pathway for probing local temperature induced phase transitions in ferroics, exploring the temperature dependence of polarization dynamics in ferroelectrics, and potentially discovering coupled phenomena driven by strong temperature- and electric field gradients. Here, we analyze the signal formation mechanism in tPFM and explore the interplay between thermal- and bias-induced switching in model ferroelectric materials. We further explore the contribution…
We use a string of confined $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions to measure perturbations to a trapping potential which are caused by light-induced charging of an anti-reflection coated window and of insulating patches on the ion-trap electrodes. The electric fields induced at the ions' position are characterised as a function of distance to the dielectric, and as a function of the incident optical power and wavelength. The measurement of the ion-string position is sensitive to as few as $40$ elementary charges per $\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ on the dielectric at distances of order millimetres, and perturbations are o…
Piezoresponse Force Microscopy contrast in transversally isotropic material corresponding to the case of c+ - c- domains in tetragonal ferroelectrics is analyzed using Green's function theory by Felten et al. [J. Appl. Phys. 96, 563 (2004)]. A simplified expression for PFM signal as a linear combination of relevant piezoelectric constant are obtained. This analysis is extended to piezoelectric material of arbitrary symmetry with weak elastic and dielectric anisotropies. This result provides a framework for interpretation of PFM signals for systems with unknown or poorly known local elastic and…
The search for topological phases of matter is evolving towards strongly interacting systems, including magnets and superconductors, where exotic effects emerge from the quantum-level interplay between geometry, correlation and topology. Over the past decade or so, scanning tunnelling microscopy has become a powerful tool to probe and discover emergent topological matter, because of its unprecedented spatial resolution, high-precision electronic detection and magnetic tunability. Scanning tunnelling microscopy can be used to probe various topological phenomena, as well as complement results fr…
Recently, the rhombohedral trilayer graphene (r-TLG) has attracted much attention because of its low-energy flat bands, which are predicted to result in many strongly correlated phenomena. Here, we demonstrate that it is possible to probe the stacking order and electronic spectrum of the r-TLG directly with a scanning tunneling microscopy around a monoatomic step edge of the top graphene layer. The tunneling spectra of the r-TLG exhibit four adjacent peaks, which are generated by the low-energy flat bands, flanking the charge neutrality point. Based on these spectra, the true energy gap and th…
MgO based magnetic tunnel junctions are prepared to investigate the dielectric breakdown of the tunnel barrier. The breakdown is directly visualized by transmission electron microscopy measurements. The broken tunnel junctions are prepared for the microscopy measurements by focussed ion beam out of the junctions characterized by transport investigations. Consequently, a direct comparison of transport behavior and structure of the intact and broken junctions is obtained. Compared to earlier findings in Alumina based junctions, the MgO barrier shows much more microscopic pinholes after breakdown…
The origins of an ultrahigh dielectric constant in polycrystalline CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) was studied using the combination of impedance spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and scanning probe microscopy (SPM). Impedance spectra indicate that the transport properties in the 0.1 Hz .. 1 MHz frequency range are dominated by a single parallel resistive-capacitive (RC) element with a characteristic relaxation frequency of 16 Hz. Dc potential distributions measurements by SPM illustrate that significant potential drops occur at the grain boundaries, which thus can be unambiguously identified as the domin…

We present theory and experiments for the force-distance curve $F(z_0)$ of an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip (radius $R$) indenting a supported fluid bilayer (thickness $2d$). For realistic conditions the force is dominated by the area compressibility modulus $κ_A$ of the bilayer, and, to an excellent approximation, given by $F= πκ_A R z_0^2/(2d-z_0)^2$. The experimental AFM force curves from coexisting liquid ordered and liquid disordered domains in 3-component lipid bilayers are well-described by our model, and provides $κ_A$ in agreement with literature values. The liquid ordered phase h…
Reducing the dimensions of ferroelectric materials down to the nanoscale has strong implications on the ferroelectric polarization pattern and on the ability to switch the polarization. As the size of ferroelectric domains shrinks to nanometer scale, the heterogeneity of the polarization pattern becomes increasingly pronounced, enabling a large variety of possible polar textures in nanocrystalline and nanocomposite materials. Critical to the understanding of fundamental physics of such materials and hence their applications in electronic nanodevices, is the ability to investigate their ferroel…
We demonstrate orientation-sensitive multimodal nonlinear optical polarizing microscopy capable of probing orientational, polar, and biaxial features of mesomorphic ordering in soft matter. This technique achieves simultaneous imaging in broadband coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering, multi-photon excitation fluorescence, and multi-harmonic generation polarizing microscopy modes and is based on the use of a single femtosecond laser and a photonic crystal fiber as sources of the probing light. We show the viability of this technique for mapping of three dimensional patterns of molecular orient…
Intrinsic carrier transport properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes are probed by two parallel methods on the same individual tubes: the contactless dielectric force microscopy (DFM) technique and the conventional field-effect transistor (FET) method. The dielectric responses of SWNTs are strongly correlated with electronic transport of the corresponding FETs. The DC bias voltage in DFM plays a role analogous to the gate voltage in FET. A microscopic model based on the general continuity equation and numerical simulation is built to reveal the link between intrinsic properties such as car…

Near-field microwave microscopy has created the opportunity for a new class of electrodynamics experiments of materials. Freed from the constraints of traditional microwave optics, experiments can be carried out at high spatial resolution over a broad frequency range. In addition, the measurements can be done quantitatively so that images of microwave materials properties can be created. We review the five major types of near-field microwave microscopes and discuss our own form of microscopy in detail. Quantitative images of microwave sheet resistance, dielectric constant, and dielectric tunab…
Microwave measurements have recently been successfully applied to measure ferroelectric materials on the nanoscale, including detection of polarization switching and ferroelectric domain walls. Here we discuss the question whether scanning probe microscopy (SPM) operating at microwave frequency can identify the changes associated with the soft phonon dynamics in a ferroic. The analytical expressions for the electric potential, complex impedance and dielectric losses are derived and analyzed, since these physical quantities are linked to experimentally-measurable properties of the ferroic. As a…
We perform correlated studies of individual GaN nanowires in scanning electron microscopy combined to low temperature cathodoluminescence, microphotoluminescence, and scanning transmission electron microscopy. We show that some nanowires exhibit well localized regions emitting light at the energy of a stacking fault bound exciton (3.42 eV) and are able to observe the presence of a single stacking fault in these regions. Precise measurements of the cathodoluminescence signal in the vicinity of the stacking fault give access to the exciton diffusion length near this location.
Nanoscale materials usually can trap light and strongly interact with it leading to many photonic device applications. The light-matter interactions are commonly probed by optical spectroscopy, which, however, have some limitations such as diffraction-limited spatial resolution, tiny momentum transfer and non-continuous excitation/detection. In this work, using scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) with ultra-wide energy and momentum match and sub-nanometer spatial resolution, we study the optical microcavity resonant spectroscopy in a single S…
We investigate - both experimentally and theoretically - the inelastic interaction between fast electrons and the electromagnetic field scattered by metallic apertures and nanostructures on dielectric membranes using photon induced near-field electron microscopy. The experiments - performed in a high brightness ultrafast transmission electron microscope - on gold apertures on silicon nitride membranes reveal strong modulations of the electron-light coupling strength. We demonstrates that this effect results from the combined action of the electric field scattered by the aperture edges and the …
The quantum Hall conductance in monolayer graphene on an epitaxial SrTiO3 (STO) thin film is studied to understand the role of oxygen vacancies in determining the dielectric properties of STO. As the gate voltage sweep range is gradually increased in our device, we observe systematic generation and annihilation of oxygen vacancies evidenced from the hysteretic conductance behavior in graphene. Furthermore, based on the experimentally observed linear scaling relation between the effective capacitance and the voltage sweep range, a simple model is constructed to manifest the relationship among t…
The control of optically driven high-frequency strain waves in nanostructured systems is an essential ingredient for the further development of nanophononics. However, broadly applicable experimental means to quantitatively map such structural distortion on their intrinsic ultrafast time and nanometer length scales are still lacking. Here, we introduce ultrafast convergent beam electron diffraction (U-CBED) with a nanoscale probe beam for the quantitative retrieval of the time-dependent local distortion tensor. We demonstrate its capabilities by investigating the ultrafast acoustic deformation…
A stripline-type near-field microwave probe is microfabricated for microwave impedance microscopy. Unlike the poorly shielded coplanar probe that senses the sample tens of microns away, the stripline structure removes the stray fields from the cantilever body and localizes the interaction only around the focused-ion beam deposited Pt tip. The approaching curve of an oscillating tip toward bulk dielectrics can be quantitatively simulated and fitted to the finite-element analysis result. The peak signal of the approaching curve is a measure of the sample dielectric constant and can be used to st…
Graphene with high carrier mobility μ is required both for graphene-based electronic devices and for the investigation of the fundamental properties of graphene's Dirac fermions. It is largely accepted that the mobility-limiting factor in graphene is the Coulomb scattering off of charged impurities that reside either on graphene or in the underlying substrate. This is true both for traditional graphene devices on SiO2 substrates and possibly for the recently reported high-mobility suspended and supported devices. An attractive approach to reduce such scattering is to place graphene in an envir…
A differential interference contrast microscopy technique, which employs a photonic crystal fiber as a white-light source, is used to measure both the real and imaginary parts of the complex dielectric constant of single 10 and 15 nm gold nanoparticles over a wavelength range of 480 to 610 nm. Noticeable deviations from bulk gold measurements are observed at short wavelengths and for individual particles even after taking into account finite-size surface damping effects.
Strong coupling between electrical and mechanical phenomena and the presence of switchable polarization have enabled applications of ferroelectric materials for nonvolatile memories (FeRAM), data storage, and ferroelectric lithography. Understanding the local functionality of inorganic ferroelectrics including crystallographic orientation, piezoresponse, elasticity, and mechanisms for polarization switching, requires probing material structure and properties on the level of a single ferroelectric grain or domain. Here, I present recent studies on electromechanical, mechanical, and spectroscopi…
We report quantitative measurements of nanoscale permittivity and conductivity using tuning-fork (TF) based microwave impedance microscopy (MIM). The system is operated under the driving amplitude modulation mode, which ensures satisfactory feedback stability on samples with rough surfaces. The demodulated MIM signals on a series of bulk dielectrics are in good agreement with results simulated by finite-element analysis. Using the TF-MIM, we have visualized the evolution of nanoscale conductance on back-gated $MoS_2$ field effect transistors and the results are consistent with the transport da…
We present numerical simulations of scattering-type Scanning Near-Field Optical Microscopy (s-SNOM) of 1D plasmonic graphene junctions. A comprehensive analysis of simulated s-SNOM spectra is performed for three types of junctions. We find conditions when the conventional interpretation of the plasmon reflection coefficients from s-SNOM measurements does not apply. Our results are applicable to other conducting 2D materials and provide a comprehensive understanding of the s-SNOM techniques for probing local transport properties of 2D materials.
We performed analytical calculations of the current-voltage and strain-voltage response of the heterostructure like "charged SPM tip electrode / gap / ionic-semiconductor film" caused by the local changes of (a) ions concentration (stoichiometry contribution); (b) acceptors (donors) charge state (recharging contribution via ionic radius variation); (c) free electrons (holes) concentration (electron-phonon coupling via the deformation potential). The contribution (b) into the strain-voltage SPM was not calculated previously, while the contribution (c) was not even predicted before, while our es…
The extrinsic size effect in Piezoresponse Force Microscopy of ferroelectric and piezoelectric thin films on non-polar dielectric substrate is analyzed. Analytical expressions for effective piezoresponse, object transfer function components, and Rayleigh two-point resolution are obtained. These results can be broadly applied for effective piezoelectric response calculations in thin piezoelectric and ferroelectric films as well as surface polar layers e.g. in organic materials and bio-polymers. In particular, the effective piezoresponse strongly decreases with film thickness whereas the sharpne…
