A stripline-type near-field microwave probe is microfabricated for microwave impedance microscopy. Unlike the poorly shielded coplanar probe that senses the sample tens of microns away, the stripline structure removes the stray fields from the cantilever body and localizes the interaction only around the focused-ion beam deposited Pt tip. The approaching curve of an oscillating tip toward bulk dielectrics can be quantitatively simulated and fitted to the finite-element analysis result. The peak signal of the approaching curve is a measure of the sample dielectric constant and can be used to study unknown bulk materials.
This letter reports microwave dielectric measurements performed in the antiferroelectric phase of NaNbO3 ceramics from 100 to 450 K. Remarkable dielectric relaxations were found within the antiferroelectric phase and in the vicinity of ferroelectric-antiferroelectric phase transition. Such dielectric relaxation process was associated with relaxations of polar nanoregions with strong relaxor-like characteristic. In addition, the microwave dielectric measurements also revealed an unexpected and unusual anomaly in the relaxation strength, which was related to a disruption of the antiferroelectric…
We use a near-field scanning microwave microscope to simultaneously image the dielectric constant, loss tangent, and topography in a PbTiO_3 crystal. By this method, we study the effects of the local dielectric constant and loss tangent in the geometry of periodic domains on the measured resonant frequency, and quality factor. We also carry out theoretical calculations and the results agree well with the experimental data and reveal the anisotropic nature of dielectric constant.
Accurate data of complex permittivity of dielectric substrates are needed for efficient design of HTS microwave planar circuits. We have tested MgO substrates from three different manufacturing batches using a dielectric resonator with superconducting parts recently developed for precise microwave characterization of laminar dielectrics at cryogenic temperatures. The measurement fixture has been fabricated using a SrLaAlO3 post dielectric resonator with DyBa2Cu3O7 end plates and silver-plated copper sidewalls to achieve the resolution of loss tangent measurements of 2 {\times} 10-6. The tested…
The microwave, near-millimetre and infrared (IR) dielectric response of Srn+1TinO3n+1 (n=1-4) Ruddlesden-Popper homologous series was studied in the temperature range 10 to 300 K. Remarkable softening of the polar optical mode was observed in Sr4Ti3O10 and Sr5Ti4O13 which explains the increase in microwave permittivity and dielectric loss upon cooling. However, both samples have a distinct content of SrTiO3 dispersed between SrO layers. It is proposed therefore that the observed soft mode originates from the SrTiO3 microscopic inclusions.
Microwave energy has been demonstrated to be beneficial for reducing the energetic cost of several steps of the mining process. Significant literature has been developed about this topic but few studies are focused on understanding the interaction between microwaves and minerals at a fundamental level in order to elucidate the underlying physical processes that control the observed phenomena. This is ascribed to the complexity of such phenomena, related to chemical and physical transformations, where electrical, thermal and mechanical forces play concurrent roles. In this work a new characteri…
We present a method for extracting high-spatial resolution dielectric constant data at microwave frequencies. A scanning near field microwave microscope probes a sample and acquires data in the form of the frequency and quality factor shifts of a resonant cavity coupled to the sample. The approach reported here is to calculate the electromagnetic fields by the finite element method in both static and time-dependent modes. Cavity perturbation theory connects the measured frequency shifts to changes in the computed energy stored in the electromagnetic field. In this way, the complex permittivity…
We report on linear and non-linear dielectric property measurements of BaTiO3 - CoFe2O4 (BTO-CFO) ferroelectro-magnetic nano-composites and pure BaTiO3 and CoFe2O4 samples with Scanning Near Field Microwave Microscopy. The permittivity scanning image with spatial resolution on the micro-meter scale shows that the nano-composites have very uniform quality with an effective dielectric constant ε_r = 140 +/- 6.4 at 3.8 GHz and room temperature. The temperature dependence of dielectric permittivity shows that the Curie temperature of pure BTO was shifted by the clamping effect of the MgO substrate…

We describe the use of a near-field scanning microwave microscope to image the permittivity and tunability of bulk and thin film dielectric samples on a length scale of about 1 micron. The microscope is sensitive to the linear permittivity, as well as to nonlinear dielectric terms, which can be measured as a function of an applied electric field. We introduce a versatile finite element model for the system, which allows quantitative results to be obtained. We demonstrate use of the microscope at 7.2 GHz with a 370 nm thick barium strontium titanate thin film on a lanthanum aluminate substrate.…
Dynamics of the main dielectric anomaly in Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3 (NBT) was studied by time-domain THz and microwave spectroscopy, using also previously published data and their new overall fits. Above the dielectric maximum temperature Tm ~ 600 K, the response consists of coupled sub-THz oscillator and a relaxation mode, assigned to strongly anharmonic Bi-ion vibrations and hopping, whose slowing down explains the paraelectric-like permittivity increase to Tm. Below Tm, the main relaxation continues slowing down and additional relaxation, assigned to quasi-Debye losses, appears in the 10^11 Hz range.…
Al2O3-Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (Al2O3-BST) thin films, with different Al2O3 contents, were deposited on (100) LaAlO3 substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. The Al2O3-BST films was demosnstrated to be a suitable systems to fabricate ferroelectric thin films with low dielectric loss and higher figure of merit for tunable microwave devices. Pure BST thin films were also fabricated for comparison purpose. The films' structure and morphology were analyzed by X-ray diffractiopn and scanning electron microscopy, respectively; nad showed that the surface roughness for the Al2O3-BST films increase…
The theoretical model is fully developed and the test rig is designed for the measurements of microwave parameters of unclad and laminated dielectric substrates. The geometry of the electromagnetic field in the resonator allows dielectric measurements with electric field component orthogonal to the sample surface. The test rig was completely automatized for measurements of the following parameters: (i) dielectric constant of the dielectric substrate in the range from 2 to 10, (ii) loss tangent of the dielectric substrate in the range from 10^-4 to 10^-2, and (iii) microwave ohmic loss at the i…
Structure and dielectric characterization were performed on the (1-x)La(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O3 - xLa2/3TiO3 perovskite ceramics with the actual composition 0<=x<=0.52. The sequence of structure transformations was detected as x is increased: P21/n (0<=x<0.3) - Pnma (0.3<=x<0.37) - Imma (0.37<=x<0.4) - I2/a (0.4<=x<=0.49) - R-3c (0.49<x<=0.52). The structure evolution from the tilt configuration a+b-b- to a-a-a- are considered in terms of competing the repulsive energy and the Madelung energy. Relative permittivity of the ceramics was measured as a function of temperature and LT content. Temperature coe…
We describe the use of a near-field scanning microwave microscope to quantitatively image the dielectric permittivity and tunability of thin-film dielectric samples on a length scale of 1 micron. We demonstrate this technique with permittivity images and local hysteresis loops of a 370 nm thick barium strontium titanate thin film at 7.2 GHz. We also observe the role of annealing in the recovery of dielectric tunability in a damaged region of the thin film. We can measure changes in relative permittivity as small as 2 at 500, and changes in dielectric tunability as small as 0.03 V$^{-1}$.
We present a method for noncontact, noninvasive measurements of dielectric constant, k, of 100-nm- to 1.5-μm-thick blanket low-k interconnect films on up to 300 mm in diameter wafers. The method has about 10 micron sampling spot size, and provides <0.3% precision and <2% accuracy for k-value. It is based on a microfabricated near-field scanned microwave probe formed by a 4 GHz parallel strip transmission line resonator tapered down to a few-micron tip size.
The rare-earth-metal-oxide based electronic materials were produced via a conventional mixed-oxide route. Thermal analysis, XRD and SEM were used to follow phase evolution and demonstrate the phase purity. Analytical TEM were used to analyze crystal structural defects and to track the presence of secondary phases, especially at grain boundaries. A crystal structure determination was also performed. Phonon modes were analyzed with FTIR and Raman spectroscopies and correlated with the origin of dielectric permittivity (εr) and radiation losses (tan δ) characteristics. In some compound and mixed …
La$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$NiO$_4$ is well known to have a colossal dielectric constant ($\varepsilon_R>10^7$). The La$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$NiO$_4$ nanoparticle powder was prepared by a combinational method of solid state reaction and high-energy ball milling. Magnetic measurements show that the material has a very small magnetic moment and paramagnetic characteristic at room temperature. The mixture of the nanoparticle powder (40% vol.) and paraffin (60% vol.) coated in the form of flat layers of different thicknesses ($t$) exhibits strong microwave absorption resonances in the 4-18 GHz range. The refle…
Microwave measurements have recently been successfully applied to measure ferroelectric materials on the nanoscale, including detection of polarization switching and ferroelectric domain walls. Here we discuss the question whether scanning probe microscopy (SPM) operating at microwave frequency can identify the changes associated with the soft phonon dynamics in a ferroic. The analytical expressions for the electric potential, complex impedance and dielectric losses are derived and analyzed, since these physical quantities are linked to experimentally-measurable properties of the ferroic. As a…
Low-loss deposited dielectrics will benefit superconducting devices such as integrated superconducting spectrometers, superconducting qubits and kinetic inductance parametric amplifiers. Compared with planar structures, multi-layer structures such as microstrips are more compact and eliminate radiation loss at high frequencies. Multi-layer structures are most easily fabricated with deposited dielectrics, which typically exhibit higher dielectric loss than crystalline dielectrics. We measured the sub-kelvin and low-power microwave and mm-submm wave dielectric loss of hydrogenated amorphous sili…
In recent years, the immiscible polymer blend system has attracted much attention as the matrix of nanocomposites. Herein, from the perspective of dynamics, the control of the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) migration aided with the interface of polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends was achieved through a facile melt mixing method. Thus, we revealed a comprehensive relationship between several typical CNTs migrating scenarios and the microwave dielectric properties of their nanocomposites. Based on the unique morphologies and phase domain structures of the immiscible matrix, we …
Dielectric measurements on insulating materials at cryogenic temperatures can be challenging, depending on the frequency and temperature ranges of interest. We present a technique to study the dielectric properties of bulk dielectrics at GHz frequencies. A superconducting coplanar Nb resonator is deposited directly on the material of interest, and this resonator is then probed in distant-flip-chip geometry with a microwave feedline on a separate chip. Evaluating several harmonics of the resonator gives access to various probing frequencies, in the present studies up to 20 GHz. We demonstrate t…
Dielectric response as a function of frequency for high-permittivity dielectric and ferroelectric materials is discussed emphasizing the dynamic behaviour in the microwave and infrared range. After introducing the usual modelling of the polar phonon response and anharmonic hopping in locally dynamically disordered solids, including discussion of displacive and order-disorder ferroelectric phase transitions, we summarised the experimental data for selected ferroelectric, incipient ferroelectric and antiferroelectric perovskite ceramics (STO, BTO, BST, PZO), discussing the dielectric grain size …
We have investigated the nonlinear surface impedance and two-tone intermodulation distortion of nine epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-d films on MgO substrates, using stripline resonators, at frequencies f=2.3-11.2GHz and temperatures T=1.7K-Tc. The power dissipation decreased by up to one order of magnitude as the microwave electric field was increased to about 100V/m for T<20 K, while the reactance Xs showed only a weak increase. The minimum of the losses correlated with a plateau in the intermodulation signal. The same features were observed for a Nb film on MgO. The anomalous response is due to nonline…
We demonstrate that a near-field microwave microscope based on a transmission line resonator allows imaging in a substantially wide range of frequencies, so that the microscope properties approach those of a spatially-resolved impedance analyzer. In the case of an electric probe, the broadband imaging can be used in a direct fashion to separate contributions from capacitive and resistive properties of a sample at length scales on the order of one micron. Using a microwave near-field microscope based on a transmission line resonator we imaged the local dielectric properties of a Focused Ion Bea…
Dielectric materials, with high tunability at microwave frequencies, are key components in the design of microwave communication systems. Dense Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 (BST) ceramics, with different grain sizes, were prepared in order to optimise the dielectric tunability via polar nano cluster effects. Dielectric permittivity and loss measurements were carried at both high and low frequencies and were supported by results from X-ray powder diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopies, Raman spectroscopy and piezoresponse force microscopy. The concentration of polar nano clusters, whose…
Our study shows that deposited Ge and Si dielectric thin-films can exhibit low microwave losses at near single-photon powers and sub-Kelvin temperatures ($\approx$40 mK). This low loss enables their use in a wide range of devices, including low-loss coplanar, microstrip, and stripline resonators, as well as layers for device isolation, inter-wiring dielectrics, and passivation in microwave and Josephson junction circuit fabrication. We use coplanar microwave resonator structures with narrow trace widths of 2-16 $μ\textrm{m}$ to maximize the sensitivity of loss tangent measurements to the inter…
Microwave sensors can probe intrinsic material properties of analytes in a microfluidic channel at physiologically relevant ion concentrations. While microwave sensors have been used to detect single cells and microparticles in earlier studies, the synergistic use and comparative analysis of microwave sensors with optical microscopy for material classification and size tracking applications have been scarcely investigated so far. Here we combined microwave and optical sensing to differentiate microscale objects based on their dielectric properties. We designed and fabricated two types of plana…
This paper presents the design and fabrication of batch-processed cantilever probes with electrical shielding for scanning microwave impedance microscopy. The diameter of the tip apex, which defines the electrical resolution, is less than 50 nm. The width of the stripline and the thicknesses of the insulation dielectrics are optimized for a small series resistance (< 5 W) and a small background capacitance (~ 1 pF), both critical for high sensitivity imaging on various samples. The coaxial shielding ensures that only the probe tip interacts with the sample. The structure of the cantilever is d…
We present an experimental approach for cryogenic dielectric measurements on ultra-thin insulating films. Based on a coplanar microwave waveguide design we implement superconducting quarter-wave resonators with inductive coupling, which allows us to determine the real part $\varepsilon_1$ of the dielectric function at GHz frequencies and for sample thicknesses down to a few nm. We perform simulations to optimize resonator coupling and sensitivity, and we demonstrate the possibility to quantify $\varepsilon_1$ with a conformal mapping technique in a wide sample-thickness and $\varepsilon_1$-reg…

Dielectric resonators are key components for many microwave and millimetre wave applications, including high-Q filters and frequency-determining elements for precision frequency synthesis. These often depend on the quality of the dielectric material. The commonly used material for building the best cryogenic microwave oscillators is sapphire. However sapphire is becoming a limiting factor for higher frequencies design. It is then important to find new candidates that can fulfil the requirements for millimetre wave low noise oscillators at room and cryogenic temperatures. These clocks are used …
Dielectric materials with tunable permittivity are highly desirable for wireless communication, radar technology. However, the tunability of dielectric properties in the microwave frequency range and higher is an immense challenge for conventional materials. Here, we demonstrate a giant magnetodielectric effect in the GHz region in a metamaterial based on ferrite unit cells. The effect is derived from the coupling of the ferromagnetic resonance and the Mie resonance in the ferrite unit cells. Both the simulated and experimental results indicate that the effective permittivity of the metamateri…
Properties of calcium fluoride (CaF2) have been well researched at UV, visible and IR range of frequencies, but not at ultra high frequencies. In this work we report the loss tangent and the real part of relative permittivity of CaF2, measured in the temperatures range of 15 - 81 K and the frequency of 29.25 GHz. The loss tangent and the real part of relative permittivity were determined by measurements of the resonant frequency and the Qo - factor of a TE011 mode cylindrical copper cavity with superconducting plates containing the sample under test. The measured real part of relative permitti…
Near-field microwave microscopy has created the opportunity for a new class of electrodynamics experiments of materials. Freed from the constraints of traditional microwave optics, experiments can be carried out at high spatial resolution over a broad frequency range. In addition, the measurements can be done quantitatively so that images of microwave materials properties can be created. We review the five major types of near-field microwave microscopes and discuss our own form of microscopy in detail. Quantitative images of microwave sheet resistance, dielectric constant, and dielectric tunab…
The spatial sensor characteristics of a 6cm TDR flat band cable sensor section was simulated with finite element modelling (High Frequency Structure Simulator-HFSS) under certain conditions: (i) in direct contact to the surrounding material (air, water of different salinities, different synthetic and natural soils (sand-silt-clay mixtures)), (ii) with consideration of a defined gap of different size filled with air or water and (iii) the cable sensor pressed at a borehole-wall. The complex dielectric permittivity or complex electrical conductivity of the investigated saturated and unsaturated …
Germanium thin films are an excellent candidate for use as a low-loss dielectric in superconducting microwave resonators, a low-loss inter-layer metal wiring dielectric, and passivation layers in microwave and Josephson junction devices. In Ge/Nb structures deposited at 400 °C, we observe intermixing over as much as 20 nm. The addition of a 10 nm Ta diffusion barrier layer reduces the superconductor/dielectric intermixing to less than 5 nm and enhances the structural properties of deposited a-Ge layers based on Raman spectroscopy. Additionally, superconducting microwave resonators fabricated a…
We found anomalies in the temperature dependence of the dielectric and the magnetic susceptibiliy of NaV_2O_5 in the microwave and far infrared frequency ranges. The anomalies occur at the phase transition temperature T_c, at which the spin gap opens. The real parts of the dielectric constants epsilon_a and epsilon_c decrease below T_c. The decrease of epsilon_a (except for the narrow region close to T_c) is proportional to the intensity of the x-ray reflection appearing at T_c. The dielectric constant anomaly can be explained by the zigzag charge ordering in the ab-plane appearing below T_c. …
We describe and analyze selected surface impedance data recently obtained by different groups on cuprate, ruthenate and diboride superconducting films on metallic and dielectric substrates for fundamental studies and microwave applications. The discussion includes a first review of microwave data on MgB2, the weak-link behaviour of RABiTS-type YBa2Cu3O7-d tapes, and the observation of a strong anomalous power-dependence of the microwave losses in MgO at low temperatures. We demonstrate how microwave measurements can be used to investigate electronic, magnetic, and dielectric dissipation and re…

Dielectrics with low loss at microwave frequencies are imperative for high-coherence solid-state quantum computing platforms. We study the dielectric loss of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) thin films in the microwave regime by measuring the quality factor of parallel-plate capacitors (PPCs) made of NbSe$_{2}$-hBN-NbSe$_{2}$ heterostructures integrated into superconducting circuits. The extracted microwave loss tangent of hBN is bounded to be at most in the mid-10$^{-6}$ range in the low temperature, single-photon regime. We integrate hBN PPCs with aluminum Josephson junctions to realize transmo…
The dielectric properties of selected conductively-loaded polyimide samples are characterized in microwave through far infrared wavebands. These materials, belonging to the Vespel\textsuperscript{\textregistered} family, are more readily formed by direct machining than their ceramic loaded epoxy counterparts and present an interesting solution for realizing absorptive optical control structures. Measurements spanning a spectral range from 1 to 600\,${\rm cm^{-1}}$ (0.03 to 18\,THz) were preformed and used in parametrization of the media's dielectric function at frequencies below $\approx3\,$TH…
