Our study shows that deposited Ge and Si dielectric thin-films can exhibit low microwave losses at near single-photon powers and sub-Kelvin temperatures ($\approx$40 mK). This low loss enables their use in a wide range of devices, including low-loss coplanar, microstrip, and stripline resonators, as well as layers for device isolation, inter-wiring dielectrics, and passivation in microwave and Josephson junction circuit fabrication. We use coplanar microwave resonator structures with narrow trace widths of 2-16 $μ\textrm{m}$ to maximize the sensitivity of loss tangent measurements to the interface and properties of the deposited dielectrics, rather than to optimize the quality factor. In this configuration, thermally-evaporated $\approx 1 μ\textrm{m}$ thick amorphous germanium (a-Ge) films deposited on Si (100) have a single photon loss tangent of $1-2\times10^{-6}$ and, $9 μ\textrm{m}$-thick chemical vapor deposited (CVD) homoepitaxial Si has a single photon loss tangent of $0.6-2\times 10^{-5}$. Interface contamination limits the loss in these devices.
In recent years, the immiscible polymer blend system has attracted much attention as the matrix of nanocomposites. Herein, from the perspective of dynamics, the control of the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) migration aided with the interface of polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends was achieved through a facile melt mixing method. Thus, we revealed a comprehensive relationship between several typical CNTs migrating scenarios and the microwave dielectric properties of their nanocomposites. Based on the unique morphologies and phase domain structures of the immiscible matrix, we …
Dielectric materials, with high tunability at microwave frequencies, are key components in the design of microwave communication systems. Dense Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 (BST) ceramics, with different grain sizes, were prepared in order to optimise the dielectric tunability via polar nano cluster effects. Dielectric permittivity and loss measurements were carried at both high and low frequencies and were supported by results from X-ray powder diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopies, Raman spectroscopy and piezoresponse force microscopy. The concentration of polar nano clusters, whose…
We present an experimental approach for cryogenic dielectric measurements on ultra-thin insulating films. Based on a coplanar microwave waveguide design we implement superconducting quarter-wave resonators with inductive coupling, which allows us to determine the real part $\varepsilon_1$ of the dielectric function at GHz frequencies and for sample thicknesses down to a few nm. We perform simulations to optimize resonator coupling and sensitivity, and we demonstrate the possibility to quantify $\varepsilon_1$ with a conformal mapping technique in a wide sample-thickness and $\varepsilon_1$-reg…
Microwave cavities oscillating in the TM$_{110}$ mode can be used as dynamic electron-optical elements inside an electron microscope. By filling the cavity with a dielectric material it becomes more compact and power efficient, facilitating the implementation in an electron microscope. However, the incorporation of the dielectric material makes the manufacturing process more difficult. Presented here are the steps taken to characterize the dielectric material, and to reproducibly fabricate dielectric filled cavities. Also presented are two versions with improved capabilities. The first, called…
We present an integrated semiconductor-dielectric hybrid dual-frequency laser operating in the 1.5 $μ$m wavelength range for microwave and terahertz (THz) generation. Generating a microwave beat frequency near 11 GHz, we observe a record-narrow intrinsic linewidth as low as about 2 kHz. This is realized by hybrid integration of a single diode amplifier based on indium phosphide (InP) with a long, low-loss silicon nitride (Si$_3$N$_4$) feedback circuit to extend the cavity photon lifetime, resulting in a cavity optical roundtrip length of about 30 cm on a chip. Simultaneous lasing at two freque…
The investigation of two-level-state (TLS) loss in dielectric materials and interfaces remains at the forefront of materials research in superconducting quantum circuits. We demonstrate a method of TLS loss extraction of a thin film dielectric by measuring a lumped element resonator fabricated from a superconductor-dielectric-superconductor trilayer. We extract the dielectric loss by formulating a circuit model for a lumped element resonator with TLS loss and then fitting to this model using measurements from a set of three resonator designs: a coplanar waveguide resonator, a lumped element re…
A detailed knowledge of the dielectric properties of food materials is vital to any electromagnetic-based treatments, ranging from reheating meals in a domestic microwave oven through to sterilization processes. The uniformity and rate of heating of the food is highly dependent upon the dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the food material, with both parameters being intrinsically temperature-dependent. In this work, we explore various methods for the dielectric characterisation of materials over a wide frequency range (1 MHz to 20 GHz), to cover RF and microwave frequencies, as well as…
We demonstrate a low-dissipation dielectric metamaterial with tunable properties based on the Josephson effect. Superconducting wires loaded with regularly spaced Josephson junctions ($I_c \approx 0.25$ $μ$A) spanning a K-band waveguide and aligned with the microwave electric fields create a superconducting dielectric metamaterial. Applied dc current tunes the cutoff frequency and effective permittivity of this unique electric metamaterial. The results are in agreement with an analytical model for microwave transmission through the artificial dielectric medium.
Nanolaminated Al2O3/HfO2 thin films as well as single Al2O3 and HfO2 layers have been grown as gate dielectrics by Plasma Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition (PEALD) technique on silicon carbide (4H-SiC) substrates. All the three dielectric films have been deposited at temperature as low as 250°C, with a total thickness of about 30 nm and in particular, the nanolaminated Al2O3/HfO2 films have been fabricated by alternating nanometric Al2O3 and HfO2 layers. The structural characteristics and dielectrical properties of the nanolaminated Al2O3/HfO2 films have been evaluated and compared to those of …
We apply the Lifshitz theory of dispersion forces to find a contribution to the free energy of peptide films which is caused by the zero-point and thermal fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. For this purpose, using available information about the imaginary parts of dielectric permittivity of peptides, the analytic representation for permittivity of typical peptide along the imaginary frequency axis is devised. Numerical computations of the fluctuation-induced free energy are performed at room temperature for the freestanding peptide films, containing different fractions of water, and fo…
An inverse method for parameters estimation of infinite cylinders (the dielectric properties, location, and radius) in two dimensions from amplitude-only microwave information is presented. To this end two different Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) topologies are compared; Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Several simulations employing the Finite Differences in Time Domain (FDTD) method are performed to solve the direct electromagnetic problem and generate training, validation, and test sets for the ANN models. The magnitude of the mean errors in estimating …

In this paper, the authors propose a two-dimensional, wide dynamic range, linear displacement sensor using microwave methods. The microwave sensor circuit employs a cylindrical dielectric resonator proximity coupled to a pair of orthogonal microstrip lines formed on a microwave substrate. The DR rests on the substrate and is free to be displaced between the strips on the 2D plane of the substrate. The strips excite the particular resonant mode of the DR, the intensity of which varies with the DRs proximity to the strips. The DRs position can thus be read out in terms of the 2 port S parameters…
We report on the demonstration and investigation of Ta2O5 as high-\k{appa} dielectric for InAlN/GaN-MOS HEMT-on-Si. Ta2O5 of thickness 24 nm and dielectric constant ~ 30 was sputter deposited on InAlN/GaN HEMT and was investigated for different post deposition anneal conditions (PDA). The gate leakage was 16nA/mm at -15 V which was ~ 5 orders of magnitude lower compared to reference HEMT. The 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) density was found to vary with annealing temperature suggesting the presence of net charge at the Ta2O5/InAlN interface. Dispersion in the capacitance-voltage (C-V) chara…

Complex integrated circuits require multiple wiring layers. In complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) processing, these layers are robustly separated by amorphous dielectrics. These dielectrics would dominate energy loss in superconducting integrated circuits. Here we demonstrate a procedure that capitalizes on the structural benefits of inter-layer dielectrics during fabrication and mitigates the added loss. We separate and support multiple wiring layers throughout fabrication using SiO$_2$ scaffolding, then remove it post-fabrication. This technique is compatible with foundry level p…
We experimentally demonstrate a Purcell effect-based design technique for improved impedance matching, and thus enhanced radiation efficiency from a small microwave emitter. Using an iterative process centred on comparing the phase of the radiated field of the emitter in air with that of the emitter in a dielectric environment, we optimise the structure of a dielectric hemisphere above a ground plane surrounding a small monopolar microwave emitter in order to maximise its radiation efficiency. The optimised system shows very strong coupling between the emitter and two omnidirectional radiation…

Elastic constants and sound velocities of nm-order thin films are essential for designing acoustic filters. However, it is difficult to measure them for dielectric thin films. In this study, we use a three-layer structure where a dielectric nano-thin film is sandwiched between thicker metallic films to measure the longitudinal elastic constant of the dielectric film. We propose an efficiency function to estimate the optimal thicknesses of the components. We use Pt/NiO/Pt three-layer films for confirming our proposed method. The determined elastic constant of NiO deposited at room temperature i…
