The energy radiated (without the 1.5PN tail contribution which requires a different treatment) by a binary system of compact objects moving in a hyperboliclike orbit is computed in the frequency domain through the second post-Newtonian level as an expansion in the large-eccentricity parameter up to next-to-next-to-leading order, completing the time domain corresponding information (fully known in closed form at the second post-Newtonian of accuracy). The spectrum contains quadratic products of the modified Bessel functions of the first kind (Bessel K functions) with frequency-dependent order (and argument) already at Newtonian level, so preventing the direct evaluation of Fourier integrals. However, as the order of the Bessel functions tends to zero for large eccentricities, a large-eccentricity expansion of the spectrum allows for analytical computation beyond the lowest order.
The first calculation of the frequency spectrum of gravitational wave mass quadrupole radiation for binaries on hyperbolic orbits was performed in arXiv:1207.5359. Some shortcomings of their derivation were pointed out, but there are still inaccuracies and supplements that we believe are worthwhile to communicate. In this note we provide a consistent and straightforward exposition of the frequency spectrum in the case of hyperbolic encounters and explicitly determine the parabolic limit, which was not possible with the previous treatments.
The emission of gravitational waves from a system of massive objects interacting on hyperbolic orbits is studied in the quadrupole approximation. Analytic expressions are derived for the gravitational radiation luminosity, the total energy output and the gravitational radiation amplitude. An estimation of the expected number of events towards different targets (i.e. globular clusters and the center of the Galaxy) is also given. In particular, for a dense stellar cluster at the galactic center, a rate up to one event per year is obtained.
We describe in detail gravitational wave bursts from Primordial Black Hole (PBH) hyperbolic encounters. The bursts are one-time events, with the bulk of the released energy happening during the closest approach, which can be emitted in frequencies that could be within the range of both LIGO (10-1000Hz) and LISA ($10^{-6}-1$ Hz). Furthermore, we correct the results for the power spectrum of hyperbolic encounters found in the literature and present new exact and approximate expressions for the peak frequency of the emission. Note that these GW bursts from hyperbolic encounters between PBH are co…
Generic inspirals and mergers of binary black holes produce beamed emission of gravitational radiation that can lead to a gravitational recoil or kick of the final black hole. The kick velocity depends on the mass ratio and spins of the binary as well as on the dynamics of the binary configuration. Studies have focused so far on the most astrophysically relevant configuration of quasi-circular inspirals, for which kicks as large as 3,300 km/s have been found. We present the first study of gravitational recoil in hyperbolic encounters. Contrary to quasi-circular configurations, in which the bea…
In recent years, the proposal that there is a large population of primordial black holes living in dense clusters has been gaining popularity. One natural consequence of these dense clusters will be that the black holes inside will gravitationally scatter off each other in hyperbolic encounters, emitting gravitational waves that can be observed by current detectors. In this paper we will derive how to compute the gravitational waves emitted by black holes in hyperbolic orbits, taking into account up to leading order spin effects. We will then study the signal these waves leave in the network o…
The emission of gravitational waves is studied for a system of massive objects interacting on hyperbolic orbits within the quadrupole approximation following the work of Capozziello et al. Here we focus on the derivation of an analytic formula for the energy spectrum of the emitted waves. We checked numerically that our formula is in agreement with the two limiting cases for which results were already available: for the eccentricity ε = 1, the parabolic case whose spectrum was computed by Berry and Gair, and the large ε limit with the formula given by Turner.
In this paper, we show that the number of hyperbolic gravitational instantons grows superexponentially with respect to volume. As an application, we show that the Hartle-Hawking wave function for the universe is infinitely peaked at a certain closed hyperbolic 3-manifold.
With the release of the third Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogue (GWTC-3), 90 observations of compact-binary mergers by Virgo and LIGO detectors are confirmed. Some of these mergers are suspected to have occurred in star clusters. The density of black holes at the cores of these clusters is so high that mergers can occur through a few generations forming increasingly massive black holes. These conditions also make it possible for three black holes to interact, most likely via single-binary encounters. In this paper, we present a first study of how often such encounters can happen in nuclea…
The emission of gravitational waves from a system of massive objects interacting on elliptical, hyperbolic and parabolic orbits is studied in the quadrupole approximation. Analytical expressions are then derived for the gravitational wave luminosity, the total energy output and gravitational radiation amplitude. A crude estimate of the expected number of events towards peculiar targets (i.e. globular clusters) is also given. In particular, the rate of events per year is obtained for the dense stellar cluster at the Galactic Center.
Hyperbolic encounters of compact objects are common interactions in dense environments. During this process a significant amount of gravitational radiation is emitted depending on the parameters of the system. Here we give a parametric description of the radial motion valid for general binary orbits and the radiative energy and angular momentum losses for binaries with spinning components.

We derive from first principles third post-Newtonian (3PN) accurate Keplerian-type parametric solution to describe PN-accurate dynamics of non-spinning compact binaries in hyperbolic orbits. Orbital elements and functions of the parametric solution are obtained in terms of the conserved orbital energy and angular momentum in both Arnowitt-Deser-Misner type and modified harmonic coordinates. Elegant checks are provided that include a modified analytic continuation prescription to obtain our independent hyperbolic parametric solution from its eccentric version. A prescription to model gravitatio…
We review a recently proposed approach to construct gravitational wave (GW) polarization states of unbound spinning compact binaries. Through this rather simple method, we are able to include corrections due to the dominant order spin-orbit interactions, in the quadrupolar approximation and in a semi-analytic way. We invoke the 1.5 post-Newtonian (PN) accurate quasi-Keplerian parametrization for the radial part of the dynamics and impose its temporal evolution in the PN accurate polarization states equations. Further, we compute 1PN accurate amplitude corrections for the polarization states of…
The inner part of dense clusters of primordial black holes is an active environment where multiple scattering processes take place. Some of them give rise from time to time to bounded pairs, and the rest ends up with a single scattering event. The former eventually evolves to a binary black hole (BBH) emitting periodic gravitational waves (GWs), while the latter with a short distance, called close hyperbolic encounters (CHE), emits a strong GW burst. We make the first calculation of the stochastic GW background originating from unresolved CHE sources. Unlike the case for BBH, the low-frequency…
The gravitational radiation degrees of freedom of freedom are described in the framework of the 3+1 decomposition of spacetime. The relationship with eigenfields of the Kidder-Scheel-Teukolsky (KST) equations is established. This relationship is used to fix a parameter in the KST equations which is related to the ordering ambiguity of space derivatives in the Ricci tensor, which is inherent to first order evolution systems, like the ones currently used in Numerical Relativity applications.
We perform a parameter study of non-spinning, equal and unequal mass black hole binaries on generic, eccentric orbits in numerical relativity. The linear momentum considered ranges from that of a circular orbit to ten times that value. We discuss the different manifestations of zoom-whirl behavior in the hyperbolic and the elliptic regime. The hyperbolic data set applies to dynamical capture scenarios (e.g. in globular clusters). Evolutions in the elliptic regime correspond to possible end states of supermassive black hole binaries. We spot zoom-whirl behavior for eccentricities as low as $e\s…
A method for studying the causal structure of space-time evolution systems is presented. This method, based on a generalization of the well known Riemann problem, provides intrinsic results which can be interpreted from the geometrical point of view. A one-parameter family of hyperbolic evolution systems is presented and the physical relevance of their characteristic speeds and eigenfields is discussed. The two degrees of freedom corresponding to gravitational radiation are identified in an intrinsic way, independent of the space coordinate system. A covariant interpretation of these degrees o…
The black holes that have been detected via gravitational waves (GW) can have either astrophysical or primordial origin. Some GW events show significant spin for one of the components and have been assumed to be astrophysical, since primordial black holes are generated with very low spins. However, it is worth studying if they can increase their spin throughout the evolution of the universe. Possible mechanisms that have already been explored are multiple black hole mergers and gas accretion. We propose here a new mechanism that can occur in dense clusters of black holes: the spin-up of primor…
An algebraic-hyperbolic method for solving the Hamiltonian and momentum constraints has recently been shown to be well posed for general nonlinear perturbations of the initial data for a Schwarzschild black hole. This is a new approach to solving the constraints of Einstein's equations which does not involve elliptic equations and has potential importance for the construction of binary black hole data. In order to shed light on the underpinnings of this approach, we consider its application to obtain solutions of the constraints for linearized perturbations of Minkowski space. In that case, we…
The capture of compact bodies by black holes in galactic nuclei is an important prospective source for low frequency gravitational wave detectors, such as the planned Laser Interferometer Space Antenna. This paper calculates, using a semirelativistic approximation, the total energy and angular momentum lost to gravitational radiation by compact bodies on very high eccentricity orbits passing close to a supermassive, nonspinning black hole; these quantities determine the characteristics of the orbital evolution necessary to estimate the capture rate. The semirelativistic approximation improves …
Gravitational Wave (GW) astronomy promises to observe different kinds of astrophysical sources. Here we explore the possibility of detection of GWs from hyperbolic interactions of compact stars with ground-based interferometric detectors. It is believed that a bound compact cluster, such as a globular cluster, can be a primary environment for these interactions. We estimate the detection rates for such events by considering local geometry within the cluster, accounting for scattering probability of compact stars at finite distances, and assuming realistic cluster properties guided by available…
General relativistic effects in the weak field approximation are calculated for electromagnetic Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams. The current work is an extension of previous work on the precession of a spinning neutral particle in the weak gravitational field of an optical vortex. In the current work, the metric perturbation is extended to all coordinate configurations and includes gravitational effects from circular polarization and intrinsic hyperbolic momentum. The final metric reveals frame-dragging effects due to intrinsic spin angular momentum (SAM), orbital angular momentum (OAM), and spin…

We propose that Gravitational Wave (GW) bursts with millisecond durations can be explained by the GW emission from the hyperbolic encounters of Primordial Black Holes in dense clusters. These bursts are single events, with the bulk of the released energy happening during the closest approach, and emitted in frequencies within the AdvLIGO sensitivity range. We provide expressions for the shape of the GW emission in terms of the peak frequency and amplitude, and estimate the rates of these events for a variety of mass and velocity configurations. We study the regions of parameter space that will…
We derive the gravitational radiation-reaction force modifying the Effective One Body (EOB) description of the conservative dynamics of binary systems. Our result is applicable to general orbits (elliptic or hyperbolic) and keeps terms of fractional second post-Newtonian order (but does not include tail effects). Our derivation of radiation-reaction is based on a new way of requiring energy and angular momentum balance. We give several applications of our results, notably the value of the (minimal) "Schott" contribution to the energy, the radial component of the radiation-reaction force, and t…
We compute the third post-Newtonian (3PN) accurate instantaneous contributions to the radiated gravitational wave (GW) energy and angular momentum arising from the hyperbolic passages of non-spinning compact objects. The present computations employ 3PN-accurate instantaneous contributions to the far-zone energy and angular momentum fluxes and the 3PN-accurate Keplerian type parametric solution for compact binaries in hyperbolic orbits.
Self-force methods can be applied in calculations of the scatter angle in two-body hyperbolic encounters, working order by order in the mass ratio (assumed small) but with no recourse to a weak-field approximation. This, in turn, can inform ongoing efforts to construct an accurate description of the general-relativistic binary dynamics via an effective-one-body description or other approaches. Existing self-force methods are to a large extent specialised to bound, inspiral orbits. Here we derive the first-order conservative self-force correction to the scattering angle, show its agreement with…
Chaotic three-body interactions may lead to the formation of gravitational-wave sources. Here, by modelling the encounter as a series of close, non-hierarchical, triple approaches, interspersed with hierarchical phases, in which the system consists of an inner binary and a star that orbits it, we compute the pericentre probability distribution, and thereby the in-spiral probability in any given binary-single encounter. We then consider the indirect influence of binary-single encounters on the population of gravitational-wave sources, by changing the eccentricity distribution of hard binaries i…
Compact binaries in hyperbolic orbits are plausible gravitational wave (GW) sources for the upcoming and planned GW observatories. We develop an efficient prescription to compute post-Newtonian (PN) accurate ready-to-use GW polarization states for spinning compact binaries, influenced by the dominant order spin-orbit interactions, in hyperbolic orbits. This is achieved by invoking the 1.5PN accurate quasi-Keplerian parameterization for the radial sector of the orbital dynamics. We probe the influences of spins and gravitational radiation reaction on $h_+$ and $h_{\times}$ during the hyperbolic…
An algorithm is described for evolving the phase-space density of stars or compact objects around a massive black hole at the center of a galaxy. The technique is based on numerical integration of the Fokker-Planck equation in energy-angular momentum space, f(E,L,t), and includes, for the first time, diffusion coefficients that describe the effects of both random and correlated encounters (resonant relaxation), as well as energy loss due to emission of gravitational waves. Destruction or loss of stars into the black hole are treated by means of a detailed boundary-layer analysis. Performance o…
Two new methods have been proposed for solving the gravitational constraints without using elliptic solvers by formulating them as either an algebraic-hyperbolic or parabolic-hyperbolic system. Here, we compare these two methods and present a unified computational infrastructure for their implementation as numerical evolution codes. An important potential application of these methods is the prescription of initial data for the simulation of black holes. This paper is meant to support progress and activity in that direction.
The orbits of two black holes which are initially unbound can be transformed into bound orbits by emitting gravitational waves during close encounters in a star cluster, which is called a gravitational wave (GW) capture. The effects of spin of black holes on GW capture are investigated in the context of numerical relativity. The radiated energy during the encounter is dependent on the effective spin when the black holes have the equal masses as expected from post-Newtonian approximation. The strongest emission is produced when the spins of both black holes are anti-aligned to the orbital angul…
The spin of the final black hole in the coalescence of nonspinning black holes is determined by the ``residual'' orbital angular momentum of the binary. This residual momentum consists of the orbital angular momentum that the binary is not able to shed in the process of merging. We study the angular momentum radiated, the spin of the final black hole and the gravitational bursts in a series of orbits ranging from almost direct infall to numerous orbits before infall that exhibit multiple bursts of radiation in the merger process. We show that the final black hole gets a maximum spin parameter …
We numerically study spherical gravitational collapse in shift symmetric Einstein dilaton Gauss Bonnet (EdGB) gravity. We find evidence that there are open sets of initial data for which the character of the system of equations changes from hyperbolic to elliptic type in a compact region of the spacetime. In these cases evolution of the system, treated as a hyperbolic initial boundary value problem, leads to the equations of motion becoming ill-posed when the elliptic region forms. No singularities or discontinuities are encountered on the corresponding effective "Cauchy horizon". Therefore it…
Black holes are an ubiquitous end state of stellar evolution and successfully explain some of the most extreme physics encountered in astronomical observations. The Kerr geometry is the known exact solution to Einstein's equations for a static, eternal black hole within the framework of general relativity, and hence is of great importance in relativistic astrophysics. An understanding of the orbital dynamics of test bodies and light rays in the Kerr spacetime is therefore fundamental to the physics of a black hole. In this work, the scattering and capturing properties of unbound, "hyperbolic" …
Efficient prescription to search for linear gravitational wave memory from hyperbolic black hole encounters and its application to the NANOGrav 12.5-year dataset
We consider particle trajectories in the gravitational field of an impulsive pp-wave. Due to the distributional character of the wave profile one inevitably encounters an ambiguous point value $θ(0)$. We show that this ambiguity may be resolved by imposing covariant constancy of the square of the tangent. Our result is consistent with Colombeau's multiplication of distributions.
