A note on the gravitational wave energy spectrum of parabolic and hyperbolic encounters

The first calculation of the frequency spectrum of gravitational wave mass quadrupole radiation for binaries on hyperbolic orbits was performed in arXiv:1207.5359. Some shortcomings of their derivation were pointed out, but there are still inaccuracies and supplements that we believe are worthwhile to communicate. In this note we provide a consistent and straightforward exposition of the frequency spectrum in the case of hyperbolic encounters and explicitly determine the parabolic limit, which was not possible with the previous treatments.

Mixed Hyperbolic - Second-Order Parabolic Formulations of General Relativity

Two new formulations of general relativity are introduced. Asymptotically flat vacuum initial data sets from a modified parabolic-hyperbolic formulation of the Einstein vacuum constraint equations

In this paper we continue earlier investigations of evolutionary formulations of the Einstein vacuum constraint equations originally introduced by Rácz. Motivated by the strong evidence from these works that the resulting vacuum initial data sets are generically not asymptotically flat we analyse the asymptotics of the solutions of a modified formulation by a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. We conclude that the vacuum initial data sets generated with this new formulation are generically asymptotically flat.

Gravitational waves from hyperbolic encounters

The emission of gravitational waves from a system of massive objects interacting on hyperbolic orbits is studied in the quadrupole approximation. Analytic expressions are derived for the gravitational radiation luminosity, the total energy output and the gravitational radiation amplitude. An estimation of the expected number of events towards different targets (i.e. globular clusters and the center of the Galaxy) is also given. In particular, for a dense stellar cluster at the galactic center, a rate up to one event per year is obtained.

Search for black hole hyperbolic encounters with gravitational wave detectors

In recent years, the proposal that there is a large population of primordial black holes living in dense clusters has been gaining popularity. Gravitational wave energy spectrum of hyperbolic encounters

The emission of gravitational waves is studied for a system of massive objects interacting on hyperbolic orbits within the quadrupole approximation following the work of Capozziello et al. Here we focus on the derivation of an analytic formula for the energy spectrum of the emitted waves. We checked numerically that our formula is in agreement with the two limiting cases for which results were already available: for the eccentricity ε = 1, the parabolic case whose spectrum was computed by Berry and Gair, and the large ε limit with the formula given by Turner.

Study on the detectability of gravitational radiation from single-binary encounters between black holes in nuclear star cluster: the case of hyperbolic flybys

With the release of the third Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogue (GWTC-3), 90 observations of compact-binary mergers by Virgo and LIGO detectors are confirmed. Some of these mergers are suspected to have occurred in star clusters. Gravitational wave energy spectrum of a parabolic encounter

We derive an analytic expression for the energy spectrum of gravitational waves from a parabolic Keplerian binary by taking the limit of the Peters and Matthews spectrum for eccentric orbits.
