In 1943, Hadwiger conjectured that every graph with no $K_t$ minor is $(t-1)$-colorable for every $t\ge 1$. In the 1980s, Kostochka and Thomason independently proved that every graph with no $K_t$ minor has average degree $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$ and hence is $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$-colorable. Recently, Norin, Song and the second author showed that every graph with no $K_t$ minor is $O(t(\log t)^β)$-colorable for every $β> 1/4$, making the first improvement on the order of magnitude of the $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$ bound. The first main result of this paper is that every graph with no $K_t$ minor is $O(t\log\log t)$-colorable.
This is a corollary of our main technical result that the chromatic number of a $K_t$-minor-free graph is bounded by $O(t(1+f(G,t)))$ where $f(G,t)$ is the maximum of $\frac{χ(H)}{a}$ over all $a\ge \frac{t}{\sqrt{\log t}}$ and $K_a$-minor-free subgraphs $H$ of $G$ that are small (i.e. $O(a\log^4 a)$ vertices). This has a number of interesting corollaries. First as mentioned, using the current best-known bounds on coloring small $K_t$-minor-free graphs, we show that $K_t$-minor-free graphs are $O(t\log\log t)$-colorable. Second, it shows that proving Linear Hadwiger's Conjecture (that $K_t$-minor-free graphs are $O(t)$-colorable) reduces to proving it for small graphs. Third, we prove that $K_t$-minor-free graphs with clique number at most $\sqrt{\log t}/ (\log \log t)^2$ are $O(t)$-colorable. This implies our final corollary that Linear Hadwiger's Conjecture holds for $K_r$-free graphs for every fixed $r$.
One key to proving the main theorem is a new standalone result that every $K_t$-minor-free graph of average degree $d=Ω(t)$ has a subgraph on $O(t \log^3 t)$ vertices with average degree $Ω(d)$.
Hadwiger Conjecture has been an open problem for over a half century1,6, which says that there is at most a complete graph Kt but no Kt+1 for every t-colorable graph. A few cases of Hadwiger Conjecture, such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6-colorable graphs have been completely proved to convince all1-5, but the proofs are tremendously difficult for over the 5-colorable graph6,7. Although the development of graph theory inspires scientists to understand graph coloring deeply, it is still an open problem for over 7-colorable graphs6,7. Therefore, we put forward a brand new chromatic graph configuration and …
We advance a probabilistic approach to the Hadwiger-Nelson problem initially developed by the Polymath16 project, in particular relating the approach to finite unit-distance graphs. We define the numerical \textit{badness} of a given $k$-coloring of the plane to be the probability that a randomly chosen unit-distance edge is monochromatic under the coloring, and we provide lower bounds on the badness of arbitrary $k$-colorings using a probabilistic technique relating to finite graphs. The contrapositive of the resulting bounds lets us compute lower bounds on the order of non $k$-colorable unit…
Hadwiger's famous coloring conjecture states that every $t$-chromatic graph contains a $K_t$-minor. Holroyd [Bull. London Math. Soc. 29, (1997), pp. 139--144] conjectured the following strengthening of Hadwiger's conjecture: If $G$ is a $t$-chromatic graph and $S \subseteq V(G)$ takes all colors in every $t$-coloring of $G$, then $G$ contains a $K_t$-minor rooted at $S$. We prove this conjecture in the first open case of $t=4$. Notably, our result also directly implies a stronger version of Hadwiger's conjecture for $5$-chromatic graphs as follows: Every $5$-chromatic graph contains a $K_5$-mi…
Hadwiger's conjecture is one of the most important and long-standing conjectures in graph theory. Reed and Seymour showed in 2004 that Hadwiger's conjecture is true for line graphs. We investigate this conjecture on the closely related class of total graphs. The total graph of $G$, denoted by $T(G)$, is defined on the vertex set $V(G)\sqcup E(G)$ with $c_1,c_2\in V(G)\sqcup E(G)$ adjacent whenever $c_1$ and $c_2$ are adjacent to or incident on each other in $G$. We first show that there exists a constant $C$ such that, if the connectivity of $G$ is at least $C$, then Hadwiger's conjecture is t…
Hadwiger and Hajós conjectured that for every positive integer $t$, $K_{t+1}$-minor free graphs and $K_{t+1}$-topological minor free graphs are properly $t$-colorable, respectively. Clustered coloring version of these two conjectures which only require monochromatic components to have bounded size has been extensively studied. In this paper we consider the clustered coloring version of the immersion-variant of Hadwiger's and Hajós' conjecture proposed by Lescure and Meyniel and independently by Abu-Khzam and Langston. We determine the minimum number of required colors for $H$-immersion free gr…
Hadwiger's conjecture from 1943 states that for every integer $t\ge1$, every graph either can be $t$-colored or has a subgraph that can be contracted to the complete graph on $t+1$ vertices. As pointed out by Paul Seymour in his recent survey on Hadwiger's conjecture, proving that graphs with no $K_7$ minor are $6$-colorable is the first case of Hadwiger's conjecture that is still open. It is not known yet whether graphs with no $K_7$ minor are $7$-colorable. Using a Kempe-chain argument along with the fact that an induced path on three vertices is dominating in a graph with independence numbe…
The odd Hadwiger's conjecture, made by Gerads and Seymour in early 1990s, is an analogue of the famous Hadwiger's conjecture. It says that every graph with no odd $K_t$-minor is $(t-1)$-colorable. This conjecture is known to be true for $t \leq 5$, but the cases $t \geq 5$ are wide open. So far, the most general result says that every graph with no odd $K_t$-minor is $O(t \sqrt{\log t})$-colorable. In this paper, we tackle this conjecture from an algorithmic view, and show the following: For a given graph $G$ and any fixed $t$, there is a polynomial time algorithm to output one of the followin…
Strengthening Hadwiger's conjecture, Gerards and Seymour conjectured in 1995 that every graph with no odd $K_t$-minor is properly $(t-1)$-colorable, this is known as the Odd Hadwiger's conjecture. We prove a relaxation of the above conjecture, namely we show that every graph with no odd $K_t$-minor admits a vertex $(2t-2)$-coloring such that all monochromatic components have size at most $\lceil \frac{1}{2}(t-2) \rceil$. The bound on the number of colors is optimal up to a factor of $2$, improves previous bounds for the same problem by Kawarabayashi (2008), Kang and Oum (2019), Liu and Wood (2…

The dichromatic number $\vecχ(D)$ of a digraph $D$ is the smallest $k$ for which it admits a $k$-coloring where every color class induces an acyclic subgraph. Inspired by Hadwiger's conjecture for undirected graphs, several groups of authors have recently studied the containment of directed graph minors in digraphs with given dichromatic number. In this short note we improve several of the existing bounds and prove almost linear bounds by reducing the problem to a recent result of Postle on Hadwiger's conjecture.

We consider the coloring of certain distance graphs on the Euclidean plane. Namely, we ask for the minimal number of colors needed to color all points of the plane in such a way that pairs of points at distance in the interval $[1,b]$ get different colors. The classic Hadwiger-Nelson problem is a special case of this question -- obtained by taking $b=1$. The main results of the paper are improved lower and upper bounds on the number of colors for some values of $b$. In particular, we determine the minimal number of colors for two ranges of values of $b$ - one of which is enlarging an interval …
As a strengthening of Hadwiger's conjecture, Gerards and Seymour conjectured that every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor is $(t-1)$-colorable. We prove two weaker variants of this conjecture. Firstly, we show that for each $t \geq 2$, every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor has a partition of its vertex set into $6t-9$ sets $V_1, \dots, V_{6t-9}$ such that each $V_i$ induces a subgraph of bounded maximum degree. Secondly, we prove that for each $t \geq 2$, every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor has a partition of its vertex set into $10t-13$ sets $V_1, \dots, V_{10t-13}$ such that each $V_i$ induces a s…

Hadwiger's conjecture asserts that every graph without a $K_t$-minor is $(t-1)$-colorable. It is known that the exact version of Hadwiger's conjecture does not extend to list coloring, but it has been conjectured by Kawarabayashi and Mohar (2007) that there exists a constant $c$ such that every graph with no $K_t$-minor has list chromatic number at most $ct$. More specifically, they also conjectured that this holds for $c=\frac{3}{2}$. Refuting the latter conjecture, we show that the maximum list chromatic number of graphs with no $K_t$-minor is at least $(2-o(1))t$, and hence $c \ge 2$ in the…
A ring is a graph $R$ whose vertex set can be partitioned into $k \geq 4$ nonempty sets, $X_1, \dots, X_k$, such that for all $i \in \{1,\dots,k\}$, the set $X_i$ can be ordered as $X_i = \{u_i^1, \dots, u_i^{|X_i|}\}$ so that $X_i \subseteq N_R[u_i^{|X_i|}] \subseteq \dots \subseteq N_R[u_i^1] = X_{i-1} \cup X_i \cup X_{i+1}$. A hyperhole is a ring $R$ such that for all $i \in \{1,\dots,k\}$, $X_i$ is complete to $X_{i-1}\cup X_{i+1}$. In this paper, we prove that the chromatic number of a ring $R$ is equal to the maximum chromatic number of a hyperhole in $R$. Using this result, we give a po…
For a graph G, let h(G) denote the largest k such that G has k pairwise disjoint pairwise adjacent connected nonempty subgraphs, and let s(G) denote the largest k such that G has k pairwise disjoint pairwise adjacent connected subgraphs of size 1 or 2. Hadwiger's conjecture states that h(G) is at least c(G), where c(G) is the chromatic number of G. Seymour conjectured that s(G) is at least |V(G)|/2 for all graphs without antitriangles, i. e. three pairwise nonadjacent vertices. Here we concentrate on graphs G with exactly one c(G)-coloring. We prove generalizations of (i) if c(G) is at most 6 …
In 1943, Hadwiger conjectured that every graph with no $K_t$ minor is $(t-1)$-colorable for every $t\ge 1$. While Hadwiger's conjecture does not hold for list-coloring, the linear weakening is conjectured to be true. In the 1980s, Kostochka and Thomason independently proved that every graph with no $K_t$ minor has average degree $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$ and thus is $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$-list-colorable. Recently, the authors and Song proved that every graph with no $K_t$ minor is $O(t(\log t)^β)$-colorable for every $β> \frac 1 4$. Here, we build on that result to show that every graph with no $K_t$ m…
A conflict-free k-coloring of a graph assigns one of k different colors to some of the vertices such that, for every vertex v, there is a color that is assigned to exactly one vertex among v and v's neighbors. Such colorings have applications in wireless networking, robotics, and geometry, and are well-studied in graph theory. Here we study the natural problem of the conflict-free chromatic number chi_CF(G) (the smallest k for which conflict-free k-colorings exist). We provide results both for closed neighborhoods N[v], for which a vertex v is a member of its neighborhood, and for open neighbo…
Gerards and Seymour conjectured that every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor is $(t-1)$-colorable. This is a strengthening of the famous Hadwiger's Conjecture. Geelen et al. proved that every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor is $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$-colorable. Using the methods the present authors and Postle recently developed for coloring graphs with no $K_t$ minor, we make the first improvement on this bound by showing that every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor is $O(t(\log t)^β)$-colorable for every $β> 1/4$.
A (minimal) transversal of a partition is a set which contains exactly one element from each member of the partition and nothing else. A coloring of a graph is a partition of its vertex set into anticliques, that is, sets of pairwise nonadjacent vertices. We study the following problem: Given a transversal $T$ of a proper coloring $\mathfrak{C}$ of some graph $G$, is there a partition $\mathfrak{H}$ of a subset of $V(G)$ into connected sets such that $T$ is a transversal of $\mathfrak{H}$ and such that two sets of $\mathfrak{H}$ are adjacent if their corresponding vertices from $T$ are connect…
In this article we consider the relationship between vertex coloring and the immersion order. Specifically, a conjecture proposed by Abu-Khzam and Langston in 2003, which says that the complete graph with $t$ vertices can be immersed in any $t$-chromatic graph, is studied. First, we present a general result about immersions and prove that the conjecture holds for graphs whose complement does not contain any induced cycle of length four and also for graphs having the property that every set of five vertices induces a subgraph with at least six edges. Then, we study the class of all graphs with …
We present results referring to the Hadwiger-Nelson problem which asks for the minimum number of colours needed to colour the plane with no two points at distance $1$ having the same colour. Exoo considered a more general problem concerning graphs $G_{[a,b]}$ with $\mathbb{R}^2$ as the vertex set and two vertices adjacent if their distance is in the interval $[a,b]$. Exoo conjectured $χ(G_{[a,b]}) = 7$ for sufficiently small but positive difference between $a$ and $b$. We partially answer this conjecture by proving that $χ(G_{[a,b]}) \geq 5$ for $b > a$. A $j$-fold colouring of graph $G = (V,E…
We present a new method for reducing the size of graphs with a given property. Our method, which is based on clausal proof minimization, allowed us to compute several 553-vertex unit-distance graphs with chromatic number 5, while the smallest published unit-distance graph with chromatic number 5 has 1581 vertices. The latter graph was constructed by Aubrey de Grey to show that the chromatic number of the plane is at least 5. The lack of a 4-coloring of our graphs is due to a clear pattern enforced on some vertices. Also, our graphs can be mechanically validated in a second, which suggests that…
