Under external perturbations, inter-particle forces in disordered granular media are well known to form a heterogeneous distribution with filamentary patterns. Better understanding these forces and the distribution is important for predicting the collective behavior of granular media, the media second only to water as the most manipulated material in global industry. However, studies in this regard so far have been largely confined to granular media exhibiting only geometric heterogeneity, leaving the dimension of mechanical heterogeneity a rather uncharted area. Here, through a FEM contact mechanics model, we show that a heterogeneous inter-particle force distribution can also emerge from the dimension of mechanical heterogeneity alone. Specifically, we numerically study inter-particle forces in packing of mechanically heterogeneous disks arranged over either a square or a hexagonal lattice and under quasi-static isotropic compression. Our results show that, a hexagonal packing exhibit a more heterogeneous inter-particle force distribution than a square packing does. For both packing lattices, preliminary analysis shows the consistent coexistence of outliers (i.e., softer disks sustaining larger forces while stiffer disks sustaining smaller forces) in comparison to their homogeneous counterparts, which implies the existence of nonlocal effect. Further analysis on the portion of outliers and on spatial contact force correlations suggest that the hexagonal packing shows more pronounced nonlocal effect over the square packing under small mechanical heterogeneity. However, such trend is reversed when assemblies becomes more mechanically heterogeneous. Lastly, we confirm that, in the absence of particle reorganization events, contact friction merely plays the role of packing stabilization while its variation has little effect on inter-particle forces and their distribution.
Heterogeneity is classified in five categories---topologic, geometric, kinematic, static, and constitutive---and the first four categories are investigated in a numerical DEM simulation of biaxial compression. The simulation experiments show that the topology and geometric fabric become more variable during loading. The measured fluctuations in inter-particle movements are large, they increase with loading, and they extend to distances of at least eight particle diameters. Deformation and rotation heterogeneity are large and are expressed in spatial patterning. Stress heterogeneity is moderate…
We measure the local contact forces at both the top and bottom boundaries of three-dimensional face-centered-cubic and hexagonal-close-packed granular crystals in response to an external force applied to a small area at the top surface. Depending on the crystal structure, we find markedly different results which can be understood in terms of force balance considerations in the specific geometry of the crystal. Small amounts of disorder are found to create additional structure at both the top and bottom surfaces.
We investigate experimentally the impact of heterogeneity on the capillary pressure hysteresis in fluid invasion of model porous media. We focus on `symmetric' heterogeneity, where the contact angles the fluid interface makes with the oil-wet ($θ_1$) and the water-wet ($θ_2$) beads add up to $π$. While enhanced heterogeneity is usually known to increase hysteresis phenomena, we find that hysteresis is greatly reduced when heterogeneities in wettability are introduced. On the contrary, geometric heterogeneity (like bi-disperse particle size) does not lead to such effect. We provide a qualitativ…
We report a transition from a disordered state to an ordered state in the flow of nearly mono-disperse granular matter flowing in an inclined channel with a bumpy base, in discrete element method simulations. For low particle-sidewall friction coefficients, the particles are disordered and the Bagnold velocity profile is obtained. However, for high sidewall friction, an ordered state is obtained, characterized by a layering of the particles and hexagonal packing of the particles in each layer. The extent of ordering, quantified by the local bond-orientational order parameter, varies in the cro…
We describe an experimental and computational investigation of the ordered and disordered phases of a vibrating thin, dense granular layer composed of identical metal spheres. We compare the results from spheres with different amounts of inelasticity and show that inelasticity has a strong effect on the phase diagram. We also report the melting of an ordered phase to a homogeneous disordered liquid phase at high vibration amplitude or at large inelasticities. Our results show that dissipation has a strong effect on ordering and that in this system ordered phases are absent entirely in highly i…
The vibrational properties of a face-centered cubic granular crystal of monodisperse particles are predicted using a discrete model as well as two micropolar models, first the classical Cosserat and second an enhanced Cosserat-type model, that properly takes into account all degrees of freedom at the contacts between the particles. The continuum models are derived from the discrete model via a micro-macro transition of the discrete relative displacements and particle rotations to the respective continuum field variables. Next, only the long wavelength approximations of the models are compared …
We study the propagation of stress waves through ordered 2D networks of granular chains. The quasi-particle continuum theory employed captures the acoustic pulse splitting, bending, and recombination through the network and is used to derive its effective acoustic properties. The strong wave mitigation properties of the network predicted theoretically are confirmed through both numerical simulations and experimental tests. In particular, the leading pulse amplitude propagating through the system is shown to decay exponentially with the propagation distance and the spatial structure of the tran…
Recent experimental and computational studies of vibrated thin layers of identical spheres have shown transitions to ordered phases similar to those seen in equilibrium systems. Motivated by these results, we carry out simulations of hard inelastic spheres forced by homogenous white noise. We find a transition to an ordered state of the same symmetry as that seen in the experiments, but the clear phase separation observed in the vibrated system is absent. Simulations of purely elastic spheres also show no evidence for phase separation. We show that the energy injection in the vibrated system i…
We use simulations to investigate collision time distributions as one approaches the static limit of steady-state flow of dry granular matter. The collision times fall in a power-law distribution with an exponent dictated by whether the grains are ordered or disordered. Remarkably, the exponents have almost no dependence on dimension. We are also able to resolve a disagreement between simulation and experiments on the exponent of the collision time power-law distribution.
We present experimental measurements of dynamical heterogeneities in a dense system of microgel spheres, sheared at different rates and at different packing fractions in a microfluidic channel, and visualized with high speed digital video microscopy. A four-point dynamic susceptibility is deduced from video correlations, and is found to exhibit a peak that grows in height and shifts to longer times as the jamming transition is approached from two different directions. In particular, the time for particle-size root-mean square relative displacements is found to scale as $τ^* \sim (\dot γΔϕ^4)^{…
We investigate the spatial structure of cohesive granular matter with spheres floating at an air-liquid interface that form disordered close packings with pores in between. The interface is slowly lowered in a conical container to uniformly compress and study the system as a function of area fraction $ϕ$. We find that the free area distributions associated with Voronoi cells show significant exponential tails indicating greater heterogeneity compared with random distributions at low $ϕ$ with a crossover towards a $Γ$-distribution as $ϕ$ is increased. Further, we find significant short range or…
We present an experiment on crystallization of packings of macroscopic granular spheres. This system is often considered to be a model for thermally driven atomic or colloidal systems. Cyclically shearing a packing of frictional spheres, we observe a first order phase transition from a disordered to an ordered state. The ordered state consists of crystallites of mixed FCC and HCP symmetry that coexist with the amorphous bulk. The transition, initiated by homogeneous nucleation, overcomes a barrier at 64.5% volume fraction. Nucleation consists predominantly of the dissolving of small nuclei and…
We track the motion of a horizontally vibrated amorphous assembly of bidisperse hard disks, for densities ranging across the jamming transition. We derive on very general grounds a bound on the dynamical susceptibility in terms of the response of the dynamics to a change in density. This generalizes a similar bound recently derived for equilibrium liquids. We find that in our experimental system the bound is tight and reproduces the non-monotonic behavior of the dynamical susceptibility both in time and density across the jamming transition. The underlying scaling behavior reveals an intimate …
A two-dimensional system of photoelastic disks subject to vertical tapping against gravity was experimentally monitored from ordered to disordered configurations by varying bidispersity. The packing fraction $ϕ$, coordination number $Z$, and an appropriately defined force chain orientational order parameter $S$, all exhibit similar sharp transition with small increase in disorder. A measurable change in $S$, but not $ϕ~\&~Z$, was detected under tapping. We find disorder-induced metastability does not show configurational relaxation, but can be detected via force chain reorientations.

The behavior of an ultrasonic shot peening process is observed and analyzed by using a model of inelastic hard spheres in a gravitational field that are fluidized by a vibrating bottom wall (sonotrode) in a cylindrical chamber. A marked heterogeneous distribution of impacts appears when the collision between the shot and the side wall becomes inelastic with constant dissipation. This effect is one order of magnitude larger than the simple heterogeneity arising from boundary collision on the cylinder. Variable restitution coefficients bring the simulation closer to the general observation and a…
Granular solid hydrodynamics (GSH) is a continuum-mechanical theory for granular media, the range of which is shown in this paper. Simple, frequently analytic solutions are related to classic observations at different shear rates, including: (i)~static stress distribution, clogging; (ii)~elasto-plastic motion: loading and unloading, approach to the critical state, angle of stability and repose; (iii)~rapid dense flow: the $μ$-rheology, Bagnold scaling and the stress minimum; (iv)~elastic waves, compaction, wide and narrow shear band. Less conventional experiments have also been considered: she…
We introduce structural heterogeneity, a new topological characteristic for semi-ordered materials that captures their degree of organisation at a mesoscopic level and tracks their time-evolution, ultimately detecting the order-disorder transition at the microscopic scale. Such quantitative characterisation of a complex, soft matter system has not yet been achieved with any other method. We show that structural heterogeneity can track structural changes in a liquid crystal nanocomposite, reveal the effect of confined geometry on the nematic-isotropic and isotropic-nematic phase transitions, an…
We investigate ordering properties of two-dimensional granular materials using several shapes created by welding ball bearings together. Ordered domains form much more easily in two than in three dimensions, even when configurations lack long-range order. The onset of ordered domains occurs near a packing density of 0.8, a phenomenon observed previously for disks. One of our shapes, the trapezoid, has packings that remain disordered and near the transition density even after annealing by shaking. Since random packings are unstable for disks and many other shapes in two dimensions, trapezoid pa…
Granular crystallisation is an important phenomenon whereby ordered packing structures form in granular matter under vibration. However, compared with the well-developed principles of crystallisation at the atomic scale, crystallisation in granular matter remains relatively poorly understood. To investigate this behaviour further and bridge the fields of granular matter and materials science, we simulated mono-disperse spheres confined in cylindrical containers to study their structural dynamics during vibration. By applying adequate vibration, disorder-to-order transitions were induced. Such …
Structural characteristics are considered to be the dominant factors in determining the effective properties of granular media, particularly in the scope of transport phenomena. Towards improved heat management, thermal transport in granular media requires an improved fundamental understanding. In this study, the effects of packing structure on heat transfer in granular media are evaluated at macro- and grain-scales. At the grain-scale, a gas-solid coupling heat transfer model is adapted into a discrete-element-method to simulate this transport phenomenon. The numerical framework is validated …
Discrete Element Methods (DEM) are a useful tool to model the fracture of cohesive granular materials. For this kind of application, simple particle shapes (discs in 2D, spheres in 3D) are usually employed. However, dealing with more general particle shapes allows to account for the natural heterogeneity of grains inside real materials. We present a discrete model allowing to mimic cohesion between contacting or non-contacting particles whatever their shape in 2D and 3D. The cohesive interactions are made of cohesion points placed on interacting particles, with the aim of representing a cohesi…
Discrete element method is conducted to investigate the bidisperse dense granular flow having big and small grains in a two dimensional hopper. A half-circular dynamical force arch is observed above the outlet and Beverloo's law is verified to describe the relationship between flow rate and outlet size. The bidisperse flow can reach the maximum flow rate when a small fraction of big grains is added into the monodisperse flow with only small grains. The distributions of contact force, packing fraction and grain velocity indicate that the flow properties in the hopper are closely related to the …
We study the order-disorder transition of horizontally swirled dry and wet granular disks by means of computer simulations. Our systematic investigation of the local order formation as a function of amplitude and period of the external driving force shows that a large cluster of hexagonally ordered particles forms for both dry and wet granular particles at intermediate driving energies. Disordered states are found at small and large driving energies. Wet granular particles reach a higher degree of local hexagonal order, with respect to the dry case. For both cases we report a qualitative phase…
It is widely recognized in particle technology that adhesive powders show a wide range of different bulk behavior due to the peculiarity of the particle interaction. We use Discrete Element simulations to investigate the effect of contact cohesion on the steady state of dense powders in a slowly sheared split-bottom Couette cell, which imposes a wide stable shear band. The intensity of cohesive forces can be quantified by the {\em granular Bond number} ($Bo$), namely the ratio between maximum attractive force and average force due to external compression. We find that the shear banding phenome…
We investigate the jamming transition in packings of emulsions and granular materials via molecular dynamics simulations. The emulsion model is composed of frictionless droplets interacting via nonlinear normal forces obtained using experimental data acquired by confocal microscopy of compressed emulsions systems. Granular materials are modeled by Hertz-Mindlin deformable spherical grains with Coulomb friction. In both cases, we find power-law scaling for the vanishing of pressure and excess number of contacts as the system approaches the jamming transition from high volume fractions. We find …
The microstructure of coagulated colloidal particles, for which the inter-particle potential is described by the DLVO theory, is strongly influenced by the particles' surface potential. Depending on its value, the resulting microstructures are either more "homogeneous" or more "heterogeneous", at equal volume fractions. An adequate quantification of a structure's degree of heterogeneity (DOH) however does not yet exist. In this work, methods to quantify and thus classify the DOH of microstructures are investigated and compared. Three methods are evaluated using particle packings generated by B…
We report on experiments to measure the temporal and spatial evolution of packing arrangements of anisotropic, cylindrical granular material, using high-resolution capacitive monitoring. In these experiments, the particle configurations start from an initially disordered, low-packing-fraction state and under vertical vibrations evolve to a dense, highly ordered, nematic state in which the long particle axes align with the vertical tube walls. We find that the orientational ordering process is reflected in a characteristic, steep rise in the local packing fraction. At any given height inside th…
Stress transmission inside three dimensional granular packings is investigated using computer simulations. Localized force perturbation techniques are implemented for frictionless and frictional shallow, ordered, granular arrays confined by solid boundaries for a range of system sizes. Stress response profiles for frictional packings agree well with the predictions for the semi-infinite half plane of classical isotropic elasticity theory down to boxes of linear dimensions of approximately forty particle diameters and over several orders of magnitude in the applied force. The response profiles …
Behavior analogous to a second order phase transition is observed for the homogeneous cooling state of a heavy impurity particle in a granular fluid. The order parameter $ϕ$ is the ratio of impurity mean square velocity to that of the fluid, with a conjugate field $h$ proportional to the mass ratio. A parameter $β$, measuring the fluid cooling rate relative to the impurity--fluid collision rate, is the analogue of the inverse temperature. For $β<1$ the fluid is ``normal'' with $ϕ=0$ at $h=0$, as in the case of a system with elastic collisions. For $β>1$ an ``ordered'' state with $ϕ\neq 0$ occu…
We show that "dry" active nematics, e.g. collections of shaken elongated granular particles, exhibit large-scale spatiotemporal chaos made of interacting dense, ordered, band-like structures in a parameter region including the linear onset of nematic order. These results are obtained from the study of the relatively simple and well-known (deterministic) hydrodynamic equations describing these systems in a dilute limit, and of a self-propelled particle Vicsek-like model for this class of active matter. In this last case, revisiting the status of the strong fluctuations and long-range correlatio…
We numerically study the distribution P(f) of contact forces in frictionless bead packs, by averaging over the ensemble of all possible force network configurations. We resort to umbrella sampling to resolve the asymptotic decay of P(f) for large f, and determine P(f) down to values of order 10^{-45} for ordered and disordered systems in two and three dimensions. Our findings unambiguously show that, in the ensemble approach, the force distributions decay much faster than exponentially: P(f) ~ exp(-f^α), with alpha \approx 2.0 for 2D systems, and alpha \approx 1.7 for 3D systems.
Surfaces of planets and small bodies of our Solar System are often covered by a layer of granular material that can range from a fine regolith to a gravel-like structure of varying depths. Therefore, the dynamics of granular materials are involved in many events occurring during planetary and small-body evolution thus contributing to their geological properties. We demonstrate that the new adaptation of the parallel N-body hard-sphere code pkdgrav has the capability to model accurately the key features of the collective motion of bidisperse granular materials in a dense regime as a result of s…
We describe a series of experiments and computer simulations on vibrated granular media in a geometry chosen to eliminate gravitationally induced settling. The system consists of a collection of identical spherical particles on a horizontal plate vibrating vertically, with or without a confining lid. Previously reported results are reviewed, including the observation of homogeneous, disordered liquid-like states, an instability to a `collapse' of motionless spheres on a perfect hexagonal lattice, and a fluctuating, hexagonally ordered state. In the presence of a confining lid we see a variety …
In glasses and other disordered materials, measurements of the vibrational density of states reveal that an excess number of long-wavelength (low-frequency) modes, as compared to the Debye scaling seen in crystalline materials, is associated with a loss of mechanical rigidity. In this paper, we present a novel technique for measuring the density of modes (DOM) in a real granular material, in which we mimic thermal excitations using white noise acoustic waves. The resulting vibrations are detected with piezoelectric sensors embedded inside a subset of the particles, from which we are able to co…
We report numerical results of effective attractive forces on the packing properties of two-dimensional elongated grains. In deposits of non-cohesive rods in 2D, the topology of the packing is mainly dominated by the formation of ordered structures of aligned rods. Elongated particles tend to align horizontally and the stress is mainly transmitted from top to bottom, revealing an asymmetric distribution of local stress. However, for deposits of cohesive particles, the preferred horizontal orientation disappears. Very elongated particles with strong attractive forces form extremely loose struct…
We study the spontaneous crystallization of an assembly of highly monodisperse steel spheres under shaking, as it evolves from localized icosahedral ordering towards a packing reaching crystalline ordering. Towards this end, real space neutron tomography measurements on the granular assembly are carried out, as it is systematically subjected to a variation of frequency and amplitude. As expected, we see a presence of localized icosahedral ordering in the disordered initial state (packing fraction around 0.62). As the frequency is increased for both the shaking amplitudes (0.2 and 0.6 mm) studi…
