Based on evolutionary crystal structure searches in combination with ab initio calculations, we predict an unusual structural phase of the superconducting LaH$_{10}$ that is stable from about 250 GPa to 425 GPa pressure. This new phase belongs to a trigonal $R\bar{3}m$ crystal lattice with an atypical cell angle, $α_{rhom}$ $\sim$ 24.56$^{\circ}$. We find that the new structure contains three units of LaH$_{10}$ in its primitive cell, unlike the previously known trigonal phase, where primitive cell contains only one LaH$_{10}$ unit. In this phase, a 32-H atoms cage encapsulates La atoms, analogous to the lower pressure face centred cubic phase. However, the hydrogen cages of the trigonal phase consist of quadrilaterals and hexagons, in contrast to the cubic phase, that exhibits squares and regular hexagons. Surprisingly, the shortest H-H distance in the new phase is shorter than that of the lower pressure cubic phase and of atomic hydrogen metal. We find a structural phase transition from trigonal to hexagonal at 425 GPa, where the hexagonal crystal lattice coincides with earlier predictions. Solving the anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg equations we obtain that the predicted trigonal phase (for standard values of the Coulomb pseudopotential) is expected to become superconducting at a critical temperature of about 175 K, which is less than $T_c \sim$250 K measured for cubic LaH$_{10}$.
We explore high-pressure phase stability and superconductivity of lanthanum hydrides $LaH_m$ (m=4-11,16). We predict stability of a hitherto unreported polyhydride $P6/mmm$-$LaH_{16}$ at pressures above 150 GPa; at 200 GPa its predicted superconducting $T_C$ is 156 K, critical field $μ_0$$H_C$(0) ~ 35 T and superconducting gap is up to 35 meV. We revisit superconductivity of the recently discovered $LaH_{10}$ and find its $T_C$ to be up to 259 K (170 GPa) from solving the Eliashberg equation and 271 K from solving the gap equation in SCDFT which also allowed us to compute the Coulomb pseudopot…
The synthesis of the high temperature superconductor LaH$_{10}$ requires pressures in excess of 100 GPa, wherein it adopts a face-centered cubic structure. Upon decompression, this structure undergoes a distortion which still supports superconductivity, but with a much lower critical temperature. Previous calculations have shown that quantum and anharmonic effects are necessary to stabilize the cubic structure, but have not resolved the low pressure distortion. Using large scale path-integral molecular dynamics enabled by a machine learned potential, we show that a rhombohedral distortion appe…
Rare-earth hydrides can exhibit high-temperature superconductivity under high pressure. Here, we apply a crystal structure prediction method to the current record-holding $T_c$ material, LaH$_{10}$, and a candidate for even higher $T_c$, YH$_{10}$. We find a pressure-induced phase transition from the experimentally observed cubic LaH$_{10}$ phase to a new hexagonal phase at around 420 GPa. This hexagonal phase could explain experimental observations of hcp impurities in fcc samples. We find that YH$_{10}$ forms similar structures to LaH$_{10}$ and discuss the sensitivity of superconductivity c…
Recently superconductivity has been discovered at around 200~K in a hydrogen sulfide system and around 260~K in a lanthanum hydride system, both under pressures of about 200 GPa. These record-breaking transition temperatures bring within reach the long-term goal of obtaining room temperature superconductivity. We have used first-principle calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) along with Migdal-Eliashberg theory to investigate the electron-phonon mechanism for superconductivity in the $Fm\bar{3}m$ phase proposed for the LaH$_{10}$ superconductor. We show that the very high trans…
Two recent experiments [M. Somayazulu $et$ $al$., Phys. Rev. Lett. ${\bf 122}$, 027001 (2019) and A. P. Drozdov $et$ $al$., Nature ${\bf 569}$, 528 (2019)] reported the discovery of superconductivity in the fcc phase of LaH$_{10}$ at a critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$ between 250${\sim}$260 K under a pressure of about 170 GPa. However, the dependence of $T_{\rm c}$ on pressure showed different patterns: i.e., the former experiment observed a continuous increase of $T_{\rm c}$ up to ${\sim}$275 K on further increase of pressure to 202 GPa, while the latter one observed an abrupt decrease of $T_…
Hydrogen-rich superhydrides are promising high-Tc superconductors, with superconductivity experimentally observed near room temperature, as shown in recently discovered lanthanide superhydrides at very high pressures, e.g. LaH10 at 170 GPa and CeH9 at 150 GPa. Superconductivity is believed to be closely related with the high vibrational modes of the bound hydrogen ions. Here we study the limit of extreme pressures (above 200 GPa) where lanthanide hydrides with large hydrogen content have been reported. We focus on LaH16 and CeH16, two prototype candidates for achieving a large electronic contr…
The experimental realization of high-temperature superconductivity in compressed hydrides H$_3$S and LaH$_{10}$ at high pressures over 150 GPa has aroused great interest in reducing the stabilization pressure of superconducting hydrides. For cerium hydride CeH$_9$ recently synthesized at 80$-$100 GPa, our first-principles calculations reveal that the strongly hybridized electronic states of Ce 4$f$ and H 1$s$ orbitals produce the topologically nontrivial Dirac nodal lines around the Fermi energy $E_F$, which are protected by crystalline symmetries. By hole doping, $E_F$ shifts down toward the …
Recent theoretical and experimental studies of hydrogen-rich materials at megabar pressures (i.e., >100 GPa) have led to the discovery of very high-temperature superconductivity in these materials. Lanthanum superhydride LaH$_{10}$ has been of particular focus as the first material to exhibit a superconducting critical temperature (T$_c$) near room temperature. Experiments indicate that the use of ammonia borane as the hydrogen source can increase the conductivity onset temperatures of lanthanum superhydride to as high as 290 K. Here we examine the doping effects of B and N atoms on the superc…
Recently, the discovery of room-temperature superconductivity (SC) was experimentally realized in the fcc phase of LaH$_{10}$ under megabar pressure. Specifically, the isotope effect of $T_{\rm c}$ was measured by the replacement of hydrogen (H) with deuterium (D), demonstrating a driving role of phonons in the observed room-temperature SC. Herein, based on the first-principles calculations within the harmonic approximation, we reveal that (i) the identical electron-phonon coupling constants of fcc LaH$_{10}$ and LaD$_{10}$ decrease monotonously with increasing pressure and (ii) the isotope ef…
Clathrate hydride \emph{Fm}\={3}\emph{m}-LaH$_{10}$ has been proven as the most extraordinary superconductor with the critical temperature $T_c$ above 250 K upon compression of hundreds of GPa in recent years. A general hope is to reduce the stabilization pressure and maintain the high $T_c$ value of the specific phase in LaH$_{10}$. However, strong structural instability distorts \emph{Fm}\={3}\emph{m} structure and leads to a rapid decrease of $T_c$ at low pressures. Here, we investigate the phase stability and superconducting behaviors of \emph{Fm}\={3}\emph{m}-LaH$_{10}$ with enhanced chem…
Lanthanum (La) is the first member of the rare-earth series of elements that has recently raised considerable interest because of its unique high-Tc superhydride LaH10. Although several studies have found superconductivity and phase transitions in metallic La, there was a lack of experimental evidence for the equation of state (EoS) and superconductivity above one megabar pressure. Here, we extend the pressure range up to 140 GPa to study EoS and superconductivity of lanthanum via electrical transport and X-ray diffraction measurements. The experimental XRD patterns point to a phase transition…
We synthesized lanthanum hydride (LaHx) by laser heating of lanthanum in hydrogen atmosphere at pressure P = 170 GPa. The sample shows a superconducting step at 209 K and 170 GPa and temperature dependence of resistance. By releasing the pressure to 150 GPa, the superconducting transition temperature Tc increases to 215 K - the record Tc. This finding supports a way of achieving Tc higher than the one in H3S (203 K) in hydrides with sodalite-like structures, first proposed for CaH6 (Tc=245 K) and later for yttrium and lanthanum hydrides where higher, room temperature superconductivity is expec…
Based on recent studies regarding high-temperature (high-$T_c$) La-Y ternary hydrides (e.g., $P{\bar{1}}$-La$_2$YH$_{12}$, $Pm{\bar{3}}m$-LaYH$_{12}$, and $Pm{\bar{3}}m$-(La,Y)H$_{10}$ with a maximum $T_c \sim 253$ K), we examined the phase and structural stabilities of the (LaH$_6$)(YH$_6$)$_y$ series as high-$T_c$ ternary hydride compositions using a genetic algorithm and $\it ab$ $\it initio$ calculations. Our evaluation showed that the $Pm\bar{3}m$-LaYH$_{12}$ reported in the previous study was unstable during decomposition into $R\bar{3}c$-LaH$_{6}$ + $Im\bar{3}m$-YH$_{6}$. We also discov…
The discovery of high-temperature conventional superconductivity in H3S with a critical temperature of Tc=203 K was followed by the recent record of Tc ~250 K in the face-centered cubic (fcc) lanthanum hydride LaH10 compound. It was realized in a new class of hydrogen-dominated compounds having a clathrate-like crystal structure in which hydrogen atoms form a 3D framework and surround a host atom of rare earth elements. Yttrium hydrides are predicted to have even higher Tc exceeding room temperature. In this paper, we synthesized and refined the crystal structure of new hydrides: YH4, YH6, and…
Hydrogen-based superconductors provide a route to the long-sought goal of room-temperature superconductivity, but the high pressures required to metallize these materials limit their immediate application. For example, carbonaceous sulfur hydride, the first room-temperature superconductor, can reach a critical temperature (Tc) of 288 K only at the extreme pressure of 267 GPa. The next recognized challenge is the realization of room-temperature superconductivity at significantly lower pressures. Here, we propose a strategy for the rational design of high-temperature superconductors at low press…
By classical and path-integral molecular dynamics simulations, we study the pressure-temperature ($P$-$T$) phase diagram of LaH$_{10}$ to clarify the impact of temperature and atomic zero-point motions. We calculate the XRD pattern and analyze the space group of the crystal structures. For 125 GPa $\leq P\leq$ 150 GPa and $T=300$ K, we show that a highly symmetric $Fm\bar{3}m$ structure, for which superconductivity is particularly favored, is stabilized only by the temperature effect. On the other hand, for $T=200$ K, the interplay between the temperature and quantum effects is crucial to real…
We report a high-pressure transport study of the upper-critical field, $B_{c2}(T)$, of the topological superconductor Sr$_{0.15}$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ ($T_c = 3.0$ K). $B_{c2}(T)$ was measured for magnetic fields directed along two orthogonal directions, $a$ and $a^*$, in the trigonal basal plane. While superconductivity is rapidly suppressed at the critical pressure $p_c \sim 3.5$ GPa, the pronounced two-fold basal-plane anisotropy $B_{c2}^a/B_{c2}^{a^*} = 3.2$ at $T=0.3$ K, recently reported at ambient pressure (Pan et al., 2016), is reinforced and attains a value of $\sim 5$ at the highest pressure …
The discoveries of high-temperature superconductivity in H3S and LaH10 have excited the search for superconductivity in compressed hydrides. In contrast to rapidly expanding theoretical studies, high-pressure experiments on hydride superconductors are expensive and technically challenging. Here we experimentally discover superconductivity in two new phases,Fm-3m-CeH10 (SC-I phase) and P63/mmc-CeH9 (SC-II phase) at pressures that are much lower (<100 GPa) than those needed to stabilize other polyhydride superconductors. Superconductivity was evidenced by a sharp drop of the electrical resistanc…
Stoichiometric near room-temperature superconductors (i.e., $H_3S$ and $LaH_{10}$) exhibit so high ground state upper critical field, $B_{c2}(0)>100 T$, that the magnetic phase diagram in these materials cannot be measured in non-destructive experiments. However, recently, Semenok et al (arXiv2203.06500) proposed the idea to explore full magnetic phase diagram in NRTS samples in which the superconducting order parameter is suppressed by the magnetic element doping. If the element is uniformly distributed in the material, then the theory of the electron-phonon mediated superconductivity predict…
The current search for room-temperature superconductivity is inspired by the unique properties of the electron-phonon interaction in metal superhydrides. Encouraged by the recently found highest-$T_C$ superconductor fcc-$LaH_{10}$, here we discover several superhydrides of another lanthanide - neodymium. We identify three novel metallic Nd-H phases at pressure range from 85 to 135 GPa: $I4/mmm$-$NdH_4$, $C2/c$-$NdH_7$, $P6_3/mmc$-$NdH_9$, synthesized by laser-heating metal samples in NH3BH3 media for in situ generation of hydrogen. A lower trihydride $Fm\bar{3}m$-$NdH_3$ is found at pressures …

Here we report targeted high-pressure synthesis of two novel high-$T_C$ hydride superconductors, $P6_3/mmc$-$ThH_9$ and $Fm\bar{3}m$-$ThH_{10}$, with the experimental critical temperatures ($T_C$) of 146 K and 159-161 K and upper critical magnetic fields ($μ$$H_C$) 38 and 45 Tesla at pressures 170-175 Gigapascals, respectively. Superconductivity was evidenced by the observation of zero resistance and a decrease of $T_C$ under external magnetic field up to 16 Tesla. This is one of the highest critical temperatures that has been achieved experimentally in any compounds, along with such materials…
Following the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in the La-H system, where for the recently discovered fcc-LaH10 a record critical temperature Tc = 250 K was achieved [Drozdov et al., Nature, 569, 528 (2019) and Somayazulu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 027001 (2019)], we studied the formation of new chemical compounds in the barium-hydrogen system at pressures up to 173 GPa. Using in situ generation of hydrogen from NH3BH3, we synthesized previously unknown superhydride BaH12 with a pseudocubic (fcc) Ba sublattice, which was observed in a wide range of pressures from 75 to 173 GPa…

Quasi-two-dimensional layered BiSe, a natural super-lattice with Bi2Se3-Bi2-Bi2Se3 units, has recently been predicted to be a dual topological insulator, simultaneously weak topological insulator as well as topological crystalline insulator. Here using structural, transport, spectroscopic measurements and density functional theory calculations, we show that BiSe exhibits rich phase diagram with the emergence of superconductivity with Tc ~8K under pressure. Sequential structural transitions into SnSe-type energetically tangled orthorhombic and CsCl-type cubic structures having distinct supercon…
The discovery of superconductivity at 200 K in the hydrogen sulfide system at large pressures [1] was a clear demonstration that hydrogen-rich materials can be high-temperature superconductors. The recent synthesis of LaH$_{10}$ with a superconducting critical temperature (T$_{\text{c}}$) of 250 K [2,3] places these materials at the verge of reaching the long-dreamed room-temperature superconductivity. Electrical and x-ray diffraction measurements determined a weakly pressure-dependent T$_{\text{c}}$ for LaH$_{10}$ between 137 and 218 gigapascals in a structure with a face-centered cubic (fcc)…
The search for room temperature superconductivity has accelerated dramatically in the last few years driven largely by theoretical predictions that first indicated alloying dense hydrogen with other elements could produce conventional phonon-mediated superconductivity at very high temperatures and at accessible pressures, and more recently, with the success of structure search methods that have identified specific candidates and pressure-temperature (P-T) conditions for synthesis. These theoretical advances have prompted improvements in experimental techniques to test these predictions. As a r…
