LIGO and Virgo have initiated the era of gravitational-wave (GW) astronomy; but in order to fully explore GW frequency spectrum, we must turn our attention to innovative techniques for GW detection. One such approach is to use binary systems as dynamical GW detectors by studying the subtle perturbations to their orbits caused by impinging GWs. We present a powerful new formalism for calculating the orbital evolution of a generic binary coupled to a stochastic background of GWs, deriving from first principles a secularly-averaged Fokker-Planck equation which fully characterises the statistical evolution of all six of the binary's orbital elements. We also develop practical tools for numerically integrating this equation, and derive the necessary statistical formalism to search for GWs in observational data from binary pulsars and laser-ranging experiments.
The improved sensitivity of third generation gravitational wave detectors opens the possibility of detecting the primordial cosmological stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB). Detection of the cosmological SGWB is facing a novel challenge: it will likely be masked by the foreground generated by a large number of coalescences of compact binary systems consisting of black holes and/or neutron stars. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of reducing this foreground by removing (notching) the individually resolved compact binary signals in time-frequency space. We establish that …
We present an improved search for binary compact-object mergers using a network of ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. We model a volumetric, isotropic source population and incorporate the resulting distribution over signal amplitude, time delay, and coalescence phase into the ranking of candidate events. We describe an improved modeling of the background distribution, and demonstrate incorporating a prior model of the binary mass distribution in the ranking of candidate events. We find a $\sim 10\%$ and $\sim 20\%$ increase in detection volume for simulated binary neutron star and neu…
Gravitational-wave (GW) astronomy is transforming our understanding of the Universe by probing phenomena invisible to electromagnetic observatories. A comprehensive exploration of the GW frequency spectrum is essential to fully harness this potential. Remarkably, current methods have left the $μ$Hz frequency band almost untouched. Here, we show that this $μ$Hz gap can be filled by searching for deviations in the orbits of binary systems caused by their resonant interaction with GWs. In particular, we show that laser ranging of the Moon and artificial satellites around the Earth, as well as tim…
We investigate the extent to which resonances between an oscillating background of ultra-light axion and a binary Keplerian system can affect the motion of the latter. These resonances lead to perturbations in the instantaneous time-of-arrivals, and to secular variations in the period of the binary. While the secular changes at exact resonance have recently been explored, the instantaneous effects have been overlooked. In this paper, we examine the latter using N-body simulations including the external oscillatory forcing induced by the axion background. While the secular effects are restricte…
Standard detection and analysis techniques for transient gravitational waves make the assumption that detector data contains, at most, one signal at any time. As detectors improve in sensitivity, this assumption will no longer be valid. In this paper we examine how current search techniques for transient gravitational waves will behave under the presence of more than one signal. We perform searches on data sets containing time-overlapping compact binary coalescences. This includes a modelled, matched filter search (PyCBC), and an unmodelled coherent search, coherent WaveBurst (cWB). Both of th…
The noise produced by the inspiral of millions of white dwarf binaries in the Milky Way may pose a threat to one of the main goals of the space-based LISA mission: the detection of massive black hole binary mergers. We present a novel study for reconstruction of merger waveforms in the presence of Galactic confusion noise using dictionary learning. We discuss the limitations of untangling signals from binaries with total mass from $10^2 M_{\odot}$ to $10^4 M_{\odot}$. Our method proves extremely successful for binaries with total mass greater than $\sim 3\times 10^3$ $ M_{\odot}$ up to redshif…
We study the orbital evolution of eccentric binary neutron stars. The orbit is described as a Quasi-Keplarian orbit with perturbations due to tidal couplings. We find that the tidal interaction between stars contributes to orbital precession, in addition to the Post-Newtonian procession. The coupling between the angular and radial motion of the binary also excites a series of harmonics in the stars' oscillation. In the small eccentricity limit, this coupling mainly gives rise to an additional orbital resonance, with the orbital frequency being one third of the f-mode frequency. For a binary wi…
Stellar-mass black hole binaries (BHBs) near supermassive black holes (SMBH) in galactic nuclei undergo eccentricity oscillations due to gravitational perturbations from the SMBH. Previous works have shown that this channel can contribute to the overall BHB merger rate detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and Virgo Interferometer. Significantly, the SMBH gravitational perturbations on the binary's orbit may produce eccentric BHBs which are expected to be visible using the upcoming Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) for a large fraction of their life…
We present a convolutional neural network, designed in the auto-encoder configuration that can detect and denoise astrophysical gravitational waves from merging black hole binaries, orders of magnitude faster than the conventional matched-filtering based detection that is currently employed at advanced LIGO (aLIGO). The Neural-Net architecture is such that it learns from the sparse representation of data in the time-frequency domain and constructs a non-linear mapping function that maps this representation into two separate masks for signal and noise, facilitating the separation of the two, fr…
We describe the Multi-Band Template Analysis (MBTA) search for gravitational waves signals from coalescences of compact objects in the LIGO-Virgo data, at the time of the third observing run (2019-2020), both for low-latency detections and for offline analysis. Details are given on the architecture and functioning of the pipeline, including transient noise mitigation strategies, parameter space for the searched signals, detection of candidates and evaluation of a false alarm rate associated to them. The performance of the low-latency search is demonstrated based on the LIGO-Virgo third observi…
Mechanisms have been proposed to enhance the merger rate of stellar mass black hole binaries, such as the Von Zeipel-Lidov-Kozai mechanism (vZLK). However, high inclinations are required in order to greatly excite the eccentricity and to reduce the merger time through vZLK. Here, we propose a novel pathway through which compact binaries could merge due to eccentricity increase in general, including in a near coplanar configuration. Specifically, a compact binary migrating in an AGN disk could be captured in an evection resonance, when the precession rate of the binary equals their orbital peri…
We introduce a new technique to search for gravitational wave events from compact binary mergers that produce a clear signal only in a single gravitational wave detector, and marginal signals in other detectors. Such a situation can arise when the detectors in a network have different sensitivities, or when sources have unfavorable sky locations or orientations. We start with a short list of loud single-detector triggers from regions of parameter space that are empirically unaffected by glitches (after applying signal-quality vetoes). For each of these triggers, we compute evidence for astroph…
We introduce a novel methodology for the operation of an early %warning alert system for gravitational waves. It is based on short convolutional neural networks. We focus on compact binary coalescences, for light, intermediate and heavy binary-neutron-star systems. The signals are 1-dimensional time series $-$ the whitened time-strain $-$ injected in Gaussian noise built from the power-spectral density of the LIGO detectors at design sensitivity. We build short 1-dimensional convolutional neural networks to detect these types of events by training them on part of the early inspiral. We show th…
We study the dynamics of merging compact binaries near a rotating supermassive black hole (SMBH) in a hierarchical triple configuration. We include various general relativistic effects that couple the inner orbit, the outer orbit and the spin of the SMBH. During the orbital decay due to gravitational radiation, the inner binary can encounter an "apsidal precession resonance" and experience eccentricity excitation. This resonance occurs when the apsidal precession rate of the inner binary matches that of the outer binary, with the precessions driven by both Newtonian interactions and various po…
We describe a new kind of resonance occuring in relativistic three-body hierarchical systems: the precession resonance, occuring when the relativistic precession timescale of a binary equals the period of a distant perturber. We find that, contrary to what most previous studies assume, it can lead to an exponential increase of eccentricity of the binary even when relativistic precession dominates the quadrupolar perturbation. The resonance may happen in the observation band of LISA or change the eccentricity distribution of triples. We discuss the physics of the resonance, showing that it main…
A compact binary system implicating at least one rotating neutron star undergoes gravitomagnetic tidal resonances as it inspirals toward its final merger. These have a dynamical impact on the phasing of the emitted gravitational waves. The resonances are produced by the inertial modes of vibration of the rotating star. Four distinct modes are involved, and the resonances occur within the frequency band of interferometric gravitational-wave detectors when the star spins at a frequency that lies within this band. The resonances are driven by the gravitomagnetic tidal field created by the compani…
Binary black hole spin measurements from gravitational wave observations can reveal the binary's evolutionary history. In particular, the spin orientations of the component black holes within the orbital plane, $ϕ_1$ and $ϕ_2$, can be used to identify binaries caught in the so-called spin-orbit resonances. In a companion paper, we demonstrate that $ϕ_1$ and $ϕ_2$ are best measured near the merger of the two black holes. In this work, we use these spin measurements to provide the first constraints on the full six-dimensional spin distribution of merging binary black holes. In particular, we fin…
We apply the theory of nonlinear resonance capture to the problem of a black hole binary (BHB) orbiting a supermassive black hole (SMBH) while embedded in the accretion disk of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). If successful, resonance capture can trigger dramatic growth in the BHB eccentricity, with important consequences for the BHB merger timescale, as well as for the gravitational wave (GW) signature of such an eccentric merger. This resonance capture may occur when the orbital period around the SMBH (the "outer binary") and the apsidal precession of the BHB (the "inner binary") are in a 1…

Based on the GW dispersion relation raised in [1], we investigate the possible reflection of gravitational wave (GW) by superfluidity (SF) in the neutron star, provided its high density and dissipationless properties. Following this scenario, an experimental proposal is raised to probe the expected SF in neutron star by means of GW detection. Two types of binary systems are considered, neutron star-black hole and binary neutron star systems, with weak gravitational field condition imposed. Non-negligible modulation on the total signal caused by the GW reflection is found, which contributes amp…
