We study the dynamics of merging compact binaries near a rotating supermassive black hole (SMBH) in a hierarchical triple configuration. We include various general relativistic effects that couple the inner orbit, the outer orbit and the spin of the SMBH. During the orbital decay due to gravitational radiation, the inner binary can encounter an "apsidal precession resonance" and experience eccentricity excitation. This resonance occurs when the apsidal precession rate of the inner binary matches that of the outer binary, with the precessions driven by both Newtonian interactions and various post-Newtonian effects. The eccentricity excitation requires the outer orbit to have a finite eccentricity, and is most effective for triples with small mutual inclinations, in contrast to the well-studied Lidov-Kozai effect. The resonance and the associated eccentricity growth may occur while the binary emits gravitational waves in the low-frequency band, and may be detectable by future space-based gravitational wave detectors.
We demonstrate the importance of general relativistic apsidal precession in warped black hole accretion discs by comparing three - dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations in which this effect is first neglected, and then included. If apsidal precession is neglected, we confirm the results of an earlier magnetohydrodynamic simulation which made this assumption, showing that at least in this case the $α$ viscosity model produces very similar results to those of simulations where angular momentum transport is due to the magnetorotational instability. Including apsidal precession si…
In the absence of detectable pulsations in the eclipsing High Mass X-ray binary 4U 1700-37, the orbital period decay is necessarily determined from the eclipse timing measurements. We have used the earlier reported mid-eclipse time measurements of 4U 1700-37 together with the new measurements from long term light curves obtained with the all sky monitors RXTE-ASM, Swift-BAT and MAXI-GSC, as well as observations with RXTE-PCA, to measure the long term orbital evolution of the binary. The orbital period decay rate of the system is estimated to be ${\dot{P}}/P = -(4.7 \pm 1.9) \times 10^{-7}$ yr$…
We study the dynamics of a solar-type star orbiting around a black hole binary (BHB) in a nearly coplanar system. We present a novel effect that can prompt a growth and significant oscillations of the eccentricity of the stellar orbit when the system encounters an "apsidal precession resonance", where the apsidal precession rate of the outer stellar orbit matches that of the inner BHB. The eccentricity excitation requires the inner binary to have a non-zero eccentricity and unequal masses, and can be created even in non-coplanar triples. We show that the secular variability of the stellar orbi…

An eccentric nuclear disk consists of stars moving on apsidally-aligned orbits around a central black hole. The secular gravitational torques that dynamically stabilize these disks can also produce tidal disruption events (TDEs) at very high rates in Newtonian gravity. General relativity, however, is known to quench secular torques via rapid apsidal precession. Here we show that for a disk to black hole mass ratio $\gtrsim 10^{-3}$, the system is in the full loss cone regime. The magnitude of the torque per orbital period acting on a stellar orbit means that general relativistic precession doe…
We study the secular dynamics of compact binaries (consisting of white dwarfs, neutron stars or black holes) with tertiary companions in hierarchical triple systems. As the inner binary (with initially negligible eccentricity) undergoes orbital decay due to gravitational radiation, its eccentricity can be excited by gravitational forcing from the tertiary. This excitation occurs when the triple system passes through an "apsidal precession resonance", when the precession rate of the inner binary, driven by the gravitational perturbation of the external companion and general relativity, matches …
It has long been argued that better timing precision allowed by satelites like Rossi X-ray Timing Experiments (RXTE) will allow us to measure the orbital eccentricity and the angle of periastron of some of the bright persistent high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) and hence a possible measurement of apsidal motion in these system. Measuring the rate of apsidal motion allows one to estimate the apsidal motion constant of the mass losing companion star and hence allows for the direct testing of the stellar structure models for these giant stars present in the HMXBs. In the present paper we use the a…

We describe a new kind of resonance occuring in relativistic three-body hierarchical systems: the precession resonance, occuring when the relativistic precession timescale of a binary equals the period of a distant perturber. We find that, contrary to what most previous studies assume, it can lead to an exponential increase of eccentricity of the binary even when relativistic precession dominates the quadrupolar perturbation. The resonance may happen in the observation band of LISA or change the eccentricity distribution of triples. We discuss the physics of the resonance, showing that it main…
Mechanisms have been proposed to enhance the merger rate of stellar mass black hole binaries, such as the Von Zeipel-Lidov-Kozai mechanism (vZLK). However, high inclinations are required in order to greatly excite the eccentricity and to reduce the merger time through vZLK. Here, we propose a novel pathway through which compact binaries could merge due to eccentricity increase in general, including in a near coplanar configuration. Specifically, a compact binary migrating in an AGN disk could be captured in an evection resonance, when the precession rate of the binary equals their orbital peri…

We study precession dynamics of generic binary black holes in eccentric orbits using an effective potential based formalism derived in [M. Kesden et al., PRL {\bf 114}, 081103 (2015)]. This effective potential is used to classify binary black holes into three mutually exclusive spin morphologies. During the inspiral phase, binaries make transitions from one morphology to others. We evolve a population of binary black holes from an initial separation of $1000\mathbf{M}$ to a final separation of $10\mathbf{M}$ using post-Newtonian accurate evolution equations. We find that, given suitable initia…

The binary black holes (BBHs) formed near the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the galactic nuclei would undergo eccentricity excitation due to the gravitational perturbations from the SMBH and therefore merger more efficiently. In this paper, we study the coupling of the three body 1st post-Newtonian (PN) effects with the spin effects from the SMBH in the hierarchical triple system. We extend previous work by including the coupling between the de Sitter precession and the Lense-Thirring precession from the SMBH spin. This coupling includes both the precessions of the inner orbit angular mo…
Pleione is a Be star that is in a 218 day orbit with a low-mass binary companion. Recent numerical simulations have shown that a Be star disc can be subject to breaking when material is actively being fed into the inner parts of the disc. After breaking, the disc is composed of two rings: an inner ring that is anchored to the stellar equator and an outer ring that is free to nodally precess. A double ring disc may explain some of the observed variability in Pleione. We model the nodal precession of the outer disc ring that is driven by the companion on an observed timescale of $80.5\,\rm yr$. …
We study Lense-Thirring precession of inviscid and viscous misaligned $α-$discs around a black hole using a gravitomagnetic term in the momentum equation. For weak misalignments, $i \lesssim 10^{\circ}$, the discs behave like rigid bodies, undergoing the full suite of classical harmonic oscillator dynamics including, weak and critically damped motion (due to viscosity), precession (due to Lense-Thirring torque) and nutation (due to apsidal precession). For strong misalignments, $i \gtrsim 30^{\circ}$, we find sufficiently thin, $h/r \lesssim 0.05$ discs break, form a gap and the inner and oute…
We present a suite of high resolution hydrodynamic simulations of binaries immersed in circumbinary accretion disks (CBDs). For the first time, we investigate the preferential accretion rate as a function of both eccentricity $e_{\rm b}$ and mass ratio $q_{\rm b}$ in a densely sampled parameter space, finding that when compared with circular binaries, mass ratios grow more efficiently in binaries on moderately eccentric orbits ($0.0 \lesssim e_{\rm b} \lesssim 0.4$), and high eccentricities ($e_{\rm b} \gtrsim 0.6 $) suppress mass ratio growth. We suggest that this non-monotonic preferential a…
Hydrodynamical simulations show that circumbinary disks become eccentric, even when the binary is circular. Here we demonstrate that, in steady state, the disk's eccentricity behaves as a long-lived free mode trapped by turning points that naturally arise from a continuously truncated density profile. Consequently, both the disk's precession rate and eccentricity profile may be calculated via the simple linear theory for perturbed pressure-supported disks. By formulating and solving the linear theory we find that (i) surprisingly, the precession rate is roughly determined by the binary's quadr…
Recently, a 16-day periodicity in one fast radio burst is reported. We propose that this 16-day periodicity may be due to forced precession of the neutron star by a fallback disk. When the rotation axis is misaligned with the normal direction of the disk plane, the neutron star will precess. The eccentricity of the neutron star may be due to rotation or strong magnetic field etc. We found that the 16-day period may be understood using typical masses of the fallback disk. Polarization observations and information about the neutron star rotation period may help to discriminate different models. …
Stars that approach a supermassive black hole (SMBH) too closely can be disrupted by the tidal gravitational field of the SMBH. The resulting debris forms a tidal stream orbiting the SMBH which can collide with itself due to relativistic apsidal precession. These self-collisions dissipate energy, causing the stream to circularize. We perform kinematic simulations of these stream self-collisions to estimate the efficiency of this circularization as a function of SMBH mass $M_\bullet$ and penetration factor $β$, the ratio of the tidal radius to the pericenter distance. We uncover two distinct re…
We investigate the timelike geodesics and the periapsis precession of orbits in the Fisher-Janis-Newman-Winicour-Wyman spacetime. This spacetime represents the naked singularity spacetime in the Einstein-massless scalar system. We revisit the results in the previous studies and relax the assumptions about the eccentricity of a bound orbit and the size of a semilatus. We find that the negative periapsis precession occurs when the spacetime sufficiently deviates from the Schwarzschild spacetime. In particular, for the small eccentric orbits, we show the negative periapsis precession occurs for $…

One of the puzzles associated with tidal disruption event candidates (TDEs) is that there is a dichotomy between the color temperatures of ${\rm few}\times 10^4$~K for TDEs discovered with optical and UV telescopes, and the color temperatures of ${\rm few}\times 10^5 - 10^6$~K for TDEs discovered with X-ray satellites. Here we propose that high-temperature TDEs are produced when the tidal debris of a disrupted star self-intersects relatively close to the supermassive black hole, in contrast to the more distant self-intersection that leads to lower color temperatures. In particular, we note fro…
